Favorite Mexican food in town. LOVE the bacon wrapped shrimp and then Monterrey. Delicious!!!!!

As always, the service, drinks and food was all great. My wife and I started off with drinks in the bar while waiting on our table. I had an Agave Margarita Shaker. The drink was strong and had a great taste. My wife had a frozen swirl and she enjoyed it. For dinner, my wife had enchiladas which she said was very very good. I tried the Chicken Stuffed Medallions. They were awesome!! I highly recommend this option if you are looking for something different from the usual Tex Mex that Abuelos serves so well. I'm not sure if the place is under new management, but their quality has definitely slipped. I had a party of 5 in for dinner recently and the first dinner plate came out 15 minutes after ordering. The remaining 4 plates took an additional 20 minutes, and there was no explanation offered as to why they took so long. All of the food was, not surprisingly, cold. I spoke with a manager, who offered a 50% discount. The offer was nice, but it was concerning he felt the need to say he had no idea what was going on in the kitchen, and that this wasn't the only problem they were having. Today was Administrative Professionals Day and we placed an order for 18. We emailed our order in the day before and stated a time for pick up and everything was made to order and ready at the expected time! The food was delicious! The staff at Abuelo's made the luncheon easy for us! We did the same thing last year and look forward to doing it again next year! read more

This restaurant has been around for a while. The good is okay, it is just your basjc commercial restaurant fare. It is MOSTLY consistent but like any business has its ups and downs. This is usually dependent upon management I am guessing. read more

I like the bar area to go watch a game. They have a lot of seating. I have eaten there 3 times and so far the food has always been very good. The quesadilla is one of my favs. I would give it 5 stars except for the servers and bartenders could be more personable. read more

I live out of town and this is my second trip to this restaurant in 2 months. Today i had the Tilapia Vera Cruz , DELICIOUS! my plate was empty and if i had bread i would have wiped it clean to sop up the little sauce that was left. We dined here recently with friends. Great margaritas and sangria.The waiter had the manager come to our table to make sure one person in our party got the carnita plate he wanted, which was not on the menu. They were very friendly and accommodating about it. All of us started with guacamole, chips, salsa and chile con queso. For entrees the remaining three of us split the HUGE Monterrey plate, a sour cream chicken enchilada, a spinach enchilada, an avocado enchilada, a chicken ranchera enchilada, a cheese chile relleno, a crispy chicken taco and guacamole. Delicious margaritas! Tastiest salsa verde! One of our favorite place for lunch, dinner, or happy hour!

So....if you get a free entree birthday email, be prepared to run through hoops to make it happen. And then be prepared to be underwhelmed with your "gift". Eleven of us went to lunch. The birthday deal is buy one entree and two drinks, get an entree free. I am thinking we bought 10 entrees and several drinks but they questioned the "second meal and drink"... I had to provide my phone no less than 4 times to the server...not her fault...she did a great job. "The Manager" in the back was calling the shots. Finally, "The Manager" wanted to see my email which was encased in my $800 iPhone. So off went the server with my unlocked phone. Hope "The Manager" is not a shady guy. Hmmm...handing it over was probably not smart on my part. Anyway, the food was just okay. None of the salsa choices were great. The hassle was extremely frustrating. I don't think I will be back. One of my favorite places to eat while in Abilene. We can always count on Abuelo's to be yummy and hit the spot!

My mom and I went to Abuelo's on a Thursday evening around 7:15 with no wait time. We were served by a delightful girl named Meagan. I am very pleased with her service. She was very attentive, yet not to the point that it irritating. I like lime in my water and she was watching me from a distance. After I squeezed the two slices into my water she came over and asked if I would like some more. She could not have known that I like to also lightly squirt my chips with lime and salt before I dip them into hot sauce. I always order the matamoros, I just can't pull myself away to order anything different. It has a chili relleno covered deep fried and covered with queso or whatever sauce you want, a chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce, a beef enchilada and I always choose potatoes and the spinach casserole for my sides instead of rice and beans. The spinach casserole is killer. I am a cheese fanatic though. It it incredibly creamy and rich. I might also suggest the dip sampler. It has a chili dip with just the right amount of spice, queso, and an awesome avocado dip blended with habanero juice and sour cream. It is fabulous even if you don't like sour cream. Now be careful with that chili relleno, as they tend to become hotter the higher up you go. I cannot say I have ever had a bad experience here. You can never complain about food temp, it is always hot and fresh, and believe it or not, they have never messed up my order. I am one of those who likes to substitute sauces and beef enchiladas for cheese. They also have lunch specials from 11-3pm. If it's too crowded, you can usually just go sit at a booth directly in the bar without needing to have someone seat you. So folks I was raised in South Central Pennsylvania where Mexican food can be hard to find. So I'm not a connoisseur of Mexican food. That being said, Abuelo's is our go to restaurant for Mexican in Abilene. Very nice and clean inside. Like other establishments, I always order the same thing when I go. I get the 3 enchilada plate, sometimes 4 if I'm really hungry and they're always great and affordable. The menu is fairly expansive as well. Also, I can actually get my daughter to eat her dinner here, so it gets an extra star for that =) read more

It's a chain restaurant. It needs more parking. It serves what I call upscale Tex-Mex. . The portions are huge but still over priced for what it is. The services is prompt and friendly but like so many of the big chain places they are almost annoying in their attempts to push appetizers, deserts, drinks, and extras on the customer. ehh..the foods not that great..it's very rare that you get good service..this place just just really doesn't do anything for me..the chicken for the fajitas taste like the chicken you get at subway..and you're lucky if you get five pieces of chicken for that fajita..the margaritas are alright..nothing to write home about..if I'm going to get Mexican I'd rather go to casa Herrera..waay better food, drinks and waitstaff! read more

Had lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. Ordered chicken fajitas from the lunch menu and they were mediocre at best and almost flavorless. It seemed like the chicken was the frozen type similar to the way fast food restaurants prepare chicken. The price was around $11 which is pretty steep for the quality of the chicken. Good experience- food and drinks are good, water had an awful taste to it. Been there several times. Last two times we went I threw up after the first time, we want back and my girlfriend threw up after the second time. Not sure if it's related to the food but it seems more than a coincidence. Abuelos, my go to restaurant in Abilene, this place can get a little crowded at night and on weekends but it's totally worth it. I've tried multiple dishes but my favorite is the bacon wrapped shrimp with charro beans and cilantro lime rice. Staff is always courteous and on point and the prices are very reasonable. I've called in take out orders quite a few times as well and they are always correct and fast, and come with all the extra stuff ya need like condiments and silverware. They have cool little computers on the tables with games for the kids and desert menus and the ability to pay with a card right at the table which is pretty cool if your in a hurry. I would recommend Abuelos to anyone looking for a new place or just a great meal! read more

I've tried a few things here and haven't been impressed with anything but the salsa buffet that is served with the chips. Having so many options is pretty neat. If I have to come here for a birthday or something, I stick with the nachos. Kind of hard to mess up nachos. The restaurant itself is nice and the service has always been good. I'm pretty sure their margaritas have zero alcohol in them though. I shared a pitcher with a friend once and it had no impact on me whatsoever. I'm a lightweight, so that was very strange. This place is amazing. The first time I ever visited Abilene I was only here for three days and I ate there four times! I was so impressed with their food, and I really loved their frozen margaritas. The only thing I didn't like was their salsas. Out of three salsas not one was good and that's why I left four stars instead of five. Other than that I love this place, it's worth the wait! read more
