Went here with friends who live in the area. I was very impressed with the quick service and friendly staff. We wen on a Friday and the placed was packed but the wait was just as they called it, about 20 mins. They do take call aheads for the wait list if you want to cut your time. The best thing about Abuelo's is the chips and salsa. Other than that, one of the less-great chain Mexican places. I prefer On The Border, honestly. Service was great and our server was knowledgable about the food. He could ask us what we like and make suggestions. Chips with 4 different salsas are served while you are reviewing the menu. It takes a or for me to give a place 5 stars. The main reason I am giving it this rating is the amazing bar that was recently remodeled. It's very spacious and looks amazing. They are running the best happy hour specials in town by far right now. Sunday to Friday from 3-7. I have to say the bar tender who took care of us last night did very well. He gave me samples of a few things and was on top of refills. I will definitely be going to the bar again soon. read more

The food here was super salty and no flavor. I read their tortillas are made from scratch but tasted like store bought to me. Service was excellent! We had a wonderful attentive server. My food was ridiculously spicy (not like they normally make according to my friend) and in less than 10 minutes I had a new dish. This place was really good. The service was excellent, never went without a basket of chips, which is huge for me!! The menu has a lot on it, not a ton for vegetarians but I managed well. I got veggie fajitas which were really awesome. The plate of veggies was HUGE and had zucchini, squash, mushrooms, onions, peppers, carrots, all sizzling hot and cooked well. It came with two sides as well and the option of corn or flour tortillas. It also came with UNLIMITED sour cream and guacamole, which is amazing because where do you get unlimited guac at? I travel for business and eat at different establishment and this was one of my favorite restaurants amongst others in Abilene TX till about 1 month ago. I will say this from the get go, I will never go there again other than friends inviting me for drinks as this was by far the worst service I have ever had here and it did not happen once but twice. The first time was roughly about 3 months ago. It was a minimal incident but at the same time, it wasn't in my opinion going by the food quality standard that Abuelo's would normally have and the fact that it happened more than once. I went there with a co-worker of mine and a friend was also joining us for drinks. We ordered our food and I wanted to try something new and ordered the "LOS MEJORES DE LA CASA". It looked great on the menu with the picture and therefore expected close to the same quality as in the picture but upon arrival of our food, the bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin medallions was burned (beyond well done) and the waitress proceeded to tell me that it is a bit burned but they are remaking it. Our friend had joined us already and he stated to me as well that it looked burned. As far as knowing about kitchen etiquette, you never put out a product in front of your customer if it does not look presentable to yourself as a waitress since you did notice after placing the food on the table as this is your reputation on the line as a restaurant and an employee of that establishment. Not only that but the bacon-wrapped beef tenderloin medallions were the main attraction on the plate. To say the least, the new medallions arrived a few minutes later and it was still cooked too much. I'm not sure if the cook was not on his game that day but I hope there can be a better standard as far as taking the food to the customer to know if it's acceptable or not for future customers. I left the situation as is since they did try to rectify the issue and plus ordering something else would have made us late for an appointment. A few month later which was some time in October, I went to Abuelo's again with a co-worker of mine. We'd gotten bored of eating about the same thing everyday and wanted to make a change for lunch. We sat in the bar area which we always do at one of the round tables close to the bar. We waited almost 5 to 8 minutes before someone even approached us. She did not even excuse herself and just said hi as if nothing was of matter and brought us the menus. We ordered sweet tea and she left. She came back a few minuted later with our drink which to say, I'm not sure what she was doing as she was not being a very good waitress at all. She was sort of trying and I have seen her there before so she was not new. She finally came by and we ordered our lunch. I ordered the "TILAPIA VERACRUZ" which I have ordered on several occasions and really enjoyed it. The waitress finally brought us some chips and salsa and the chips were oilier than normal but we made do till the next batch arrived. She brought us the napkin wrapped silverware and tossed it on the table which I have never seen done in my life and I have worked in a restaurant. No respect to say the least. Finally our lunch arrived and my plate was just awful. The tilapia which is again the main star of the dish was not even there. I proceeded to say something to the waiter that brought us our food and he was just speechless and walked off. It was the smallest piece of fish possible on the plate and was just covered with a lot of sauce and a pile of veggies which don't get me wrong, I love vegetables but this was just flabbergasting as if you are trying to cover something up. The waitress came by to check on us and left. I should have sent the plate back at that point. But I was just so frustrated with this experience and the previous one, that my co-worker saw the look on my face and told me not to say anything when I saw that one of the broccoli had mold or was oxidized on the stem and that was the end of my meal once I notice that. My co-worker told me not to worry about it as he's taking care of the bill which I then dismissed the whole thing. Now thinking about this, no one should have to put up with this type of customer service or food quality. There is no standard in my eyes at this establishment and therefore, I will no longer be eating there. In my opinion, there is definitely much needed training that needs to be done and refresh the staff that has been there because this is unacceptable customer service. In my line of work, I also deal with customers on a daily basis but never would I deliver a product or offer a service that was not 100% when that is your reputation on the line. The entire time we were eating, there were 3-5 people standing behind the hostess stand, leaning against the window and cabinet. I usually come here with my husband. This time i went with a friend and we were planning on doing a movie at the paramount after. The service started out great with a happy host but then our food service was was terrible. Our initial server was avoiding us so we asked another server to help and she tried her best. My ahi tuna came out 1hr and 1/2 after we sat which tells you how long we were seated and my friends food came out well before mine. I Got there at 5:20pm and didn't hey my Tuna "appetizer" until 7:00pm. The manager came over at 6:30 and said it's coming right out and it didn't. Don't know what was going on. Will try them again but if service is still bad, going to miguels instead from now on. My husband and I went here for Father's Day. The establishment is HUGE and was packed. Thankfully we didn't have to wait because we wanted to sit by the bar. Our waiter was very sweet. Poor thing was a week away from giving birth. The food was pricey, but worth every penny. My husband had their Grande and it was more than enough food for him. Their drinks were good and strong. Overlook the atmosphere (loud and kind of tacky), and focus on the menu and the food. The menu offers a wide variety of Mexican fare with enough flare to suit diners who like everything from spicy to mild, chicken to beef to fish, and decadent to low cal. I have my menu favorites, but there are enough choices to keep me coming back. The food is consistently outside the norm of Tex-Mex (in a positive way). I've even researched copycat recipes because it's that good. Oh, and order margaritas; they're the real deal. read more
