Probably the most honest and fair mechanic I've ever dealt with. I've mostly only interacted with Kevin. A couple times I brought my car in for an issue, he looked into it, and if there was no problem there was no charge. Seems fair, always friendly. I'm new to town and I wasn't sure what was going on with my car. My automotive knowledge is very limited, but there was definitely a leak and a burning smell. I was worried because it smelled expensive It turned out that something had come loose while towing the car and it just needed to be tightened. I know from going to lesser shops that they could have nickel-and-dimed me for diagnostics or service fees etc. but they were upfront about the work and the fee was minuscule. He did not condescend when he had every right to I'm relieved to know that there is a repair shop in town where they went out of their way to not take advantage of a novice like me. I cannot even begin to understand what the other reviewer was talking about concerning Kevin's honesty, because I am more than certain that he is a full on "unicorn" in that he is a scrupulously honest mechanic. For example: after quoting me $1,000 labor to replace the clutch on my 4X4, stick shift, truck; he referred me to another, ethical, shop - which has a lower shop rate, which would save me some money on that job. What mechanic - ANYWHERE - offers to do such a thing before I can even ask about it? He has acted as a valuable resource on car care, cautioning me how important it is to use the exact, factory specified, fluids in a modern car, so I don't risk voiding the warranty by using, (or lettting a shop use) - for example - other than the factory fluid in the transmission. And how crucial it is to use motor oil that meets factory specifications. He even let me use customer supplied motor oil and filter, charging me just for the labor for the oil change (which I had already bought, intending to do it myself). It is the rare - again, rare as a unicorn - shop that will allow this. If you doubt me, go ahead and ask about that at a few places. Again, Kevin is an amazing man and never falls short, in my long experience, of being the consummate professional. Unlike that other, honest, humble reviewer; I am HIGHLY experienced in doing all sorts of mechanical work on my own vehicles, for decades. I have been having some minor issues with my equinox, and so I took it into the dealership. Without even running a complete diagnostic, the first thing I was told is that I *might* need a new engine. Gross-and wrong on a lot of levels I won't go into. ENTER ACE AUTO REPAIR to the rescue. Thank goodness. I called the shop (recommended by a coworker of my husband) and John answered the phone and I could immediately tell he values and emphasizes customer service. He got me in that same day and had one of the mechanics (very friendly and knowledgeable, and great at explaining things in layman's terms to me) diagnose the issue. Long story short, I was thrilled with the interactions I had with all three employees on site. Their were polite, respectful, thorough, and helpful. Bonus--it's location on Montview is super conducive to bikers (great bike lane) for when you don't have your car. These guys know their stuff, they kept me apprised of the situation, notified me of pricing throughout, and saved me quite a bit of money. Plus, they said to come back if any other issues present themselves. That's how you do business, folks. My car had some serious problems and John ran a series of tests and tried different products but, in the end, when it turned out to be worse than we expected, he didn't charge me for anything more than an a simple oil change. NOT TRUSTWORTHY! The man lied to me multiple times- be weary of this place. I took my Subaru in for stalling. He told me the part was $700 and charged me $37.50 for labor. I go to pick it up and the part he replaced was one I had replaced myself a month earlier, for $100 bucks!? So I confronted him and he said this was a genuine Subaru part, and was more expensive. So I called Schomp Subaru and they told me the part was $400. That's a $300 mark up! (It's possible he even put in the same part I did, which would be a $600 mark-up!) Confronted again he is speechless then stumbles... He then tells me, "oh, I don't use Schomp, I use McDonald." So I look up McDonald- they are CLOSED, permanently. The guy lied again and again. Confronted on his lies, he just says "well, it's fixed isn't it, I gotta mark up parts to make money, blah, blah." So I may have a $100 dollar part that takes 15 minutes to install and I'm out $800 dollars. That's my story, thought I needed to put it out there with all these '5 star' reviews... kinda makes me question those. read more

They're very responsive, communicative, and never try to sell me something I don't need. So she went in for the oil change. while she was waiting she walked down to the 711 for something to drink and by the time she got back they were done with her car. John's shop did a great job replacing my 2001 jeep Cherokee water pump, hoses and thermostat. John called me several times to let me know what the stays of my car was and they were actually in the middle of installing a Swann Security camera system that will allow customers to view the shop and their car via smartphone, tablet or PC while it's there being worked on. They have always done excellent work and there have never been any surprises with the bill. Amazing service. After 2 visits to jiffy lube and a 1,000 dollar AC compressor quote, I took my car to Ace and I'm so glad I did. There was no leak with my air compressor, turns out the belt just needed adjusting which is why I took it to jiffy lube in the first place. We've taken our vehicles here for years. John is such a nice guy and honest. He'll tell you like it is. . Kevin is also quite an expert mechanic. Hes had many talks with us over the years about our cars. My Toyota overheated and ended up being towed there. They could have made a lot of money off me. I've had this car for ever and love it. But it has issues and it's not our main car anymore. John and Kevin told us it's not worth fixing. With over 200,000 miles, who knows what's next. Couldn't get our money back if we wanted to sell it so time to say goodbye to the toyota. Didn't charge us to do a diagnostic. That's not the first time they've done that for us either. I told John we probably couldn't get it moved till next week and he said no problem. They don't have a lot of space for cars but he was cool with that. They thoroughly addressed all the reasons I brought in the car, communicated clearly with me every step of the way, explained the work they thought was necessary and why it was necessary, answered all the questions I had, pointed out the work they thought *wasn't* necessary, successfully fixed the CEL error codes, let me test-drive the vehicle to ensure I was satisfied with the work, and were kind enough to give my wide-eyed 3-yo son a tour of their shop :) To top it off, they called me a month later to make sure the CEL wasn't coming on anymore. read more
