I like this bar bc they have a cheap $3 Ace Draft deal all day. It's def worth coming here for that. However, after tonight I got such rude service I don't want to return. I put $4 in the pool table and the bouncer came over to me to tell me that they are closing the bar. That's fine. So I asked for my $4 back since I didn't play and they said it wasn't their problem. So I went to the bartender to tell them that I put $4 into their pool tables and would like $4 back since I never got to play the game I put money into. She refused for the longest time, and then eventually she agreed to give me my money back after making snide comments like "you're not the only one at this bar diva, so here's your money back so you can spend it on another bar". ACE was ok. It was a dive bar that lacked some of the character of Sophies. Its major attraction was the skee ball which we played, and the juke box which we danced to. But mostly the skee ball I think that anytime you are celebrating a birthday you have a few drinks with dinner and think about your next move. Naturally arcade games come up and off to Ace you go! Came here the Saturday and the place was packed! Was excited by the lively atmosphere and awesome selections of activities...until I ordered a drink. After waiting upwards of 5 minutes to get the bartender to even notice me, I tried to place an order for 2 beers and shots. The female bartender proceed to scoff at me with with a look of sheer disgust, my guess was she did not approve my boyfriend kissing me out in the open but WTH!!!, its 2017 get over it. She NEVER came back to follow up, and after waiting five more minutes to try and place my order again, I gave up. Not only did I not bother ordering a drink, but we left the place outright. Great way to lose a sale, and a customer. Thanks to Chriswhatever your name is.. I'm sorry but a crowded night does NOT give the bar staff an excuse to be downright condescending and rude to patrons. Great dive bar and who doesn't love skeeball???

This bar reminded me of a college frat party, which could be good or bad, depending on your preference. At 5:30 PM on a Friday it was so crowded it was actually difficult to navigate! I couldn't believe it. The drink specials were definitely a hit here, with $3 bud lights being our party's preferred favorite. With a $20 minimum, you can imagine that we had to consume many bud lights, which made this place all the more fun! I loved the fact that there were so many games, especially because I beat my boyfriend badly in Skeeball :) Also, there were TVs we could watch college football, so he got over the loss quickly. If you have a big group of friends, this is an awesome place to come and get drunk and play games. I would come often if I lived here! read more

I've been to Ace Bar many times and I always have fun. Unless it's too packed of course. I've had the most fun on weeknights when I can actually move around. I highly recommend coming here after dinner on a date during a weeknight or after a UCB show. I love shooting pool, only real reason I visit this place. It's only $1 and the darts are only a $10 deposit. I always meet cool people here. On the weekends you see a lot of pretentious people, but it comes with the territory. Overall a great bar. I do, however need to mention one thing, the bathroom is designed horribly. One stall and toilet. NO LOCK ON THE DOOR...why? I guess the toilet is for vomiting because what dude will want to take a shit when anyone can just waltz right in? read more

Happy hour until 8pm, friendly and courteous bartender. Dark and divey bar with a couple pool tables and other fun bar activities. There's a few booths to accommodate large groups. There's two televisions with sports on but not really a sports bar imo. Went here on a Friday night. Good tunes and relatively cheap beers. Skeeball and darts were fully occupied so we spent the entire night playing pinball. They have two machines - one is 24 (Jack Bauer) and the other is Rolling Stones themed. 24 was freakin impossible - i swear there was a special funnel into the gutter lanes! Rolling Stones was way way more fun. if you send the ball into the right places, you collect extra balls that play at the same time ("groupies"). The thing that makes it challenging is a cutout of Mick Jagger that darts this way and that right in the middle. He likes to block your balls from going up the proper chutes ("argh! #$@#@ Mick Jagger!"). It costs 75 cents for three balls, but it is more cost effective to pay $2 for nine balls. Sweet! read more

This place is awesome! Two dart boards, two pool tables, two skee ball machines, two pin ball machines. The darts are free, the pin ball is reasonable, the skee ball is a little pricey at $1 a game, but who cares its skee ball in a bar! The beer prices are decent at $4-6 drafts but unfortunately they don't really have any drink specials or happy hour that I know of. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is that the crowd here is pretty young, loud, and somewhat obnoxious, the bartender wasn't that good, and the darts and skeeball gets packed quite early on even if there's plenty of elbow room elsewhere in the bar. If I rated the people alone it would be a 2-3 stars, the bar alone would probably be a 5. read more

I was visiting a friend in NYC, last week and he took me to this place. They had a good selection of beers on tap, but thats not even the half of it. It was just like a rec room. They had 2 pool tables in the back, 2 dart boards, a coupla pinball machines, but the coolest thing was the skee-ball lanes they had. We couldn't even get on them, because there was a league tournament or something. We ended up shooting darts. I don't know of too many bars where a waitress gets your drink of choice when you are shooting darts. But this seems to be the only bar I have encountered where this is the case. I had a blast here. Pretty standard East Village bar, which while larger than most doesn't really offer anything else. Lots of gaming going on here, darts, pool, arcade games, so if you're looking for a place to hang out with some friends I guess this would be it, just not exactly my kind of bar. read more

Peach Vodka... The best part of my time at Ace was the peach vodka that i asked them to mix up in some orange juice. We walked in and it was jambed packed. As we wiggled our way to the back we passed the famous skee-ball machines (by the way there are only two) and I'm not sure if everyone is aware of why skee-ball is awesome, but it's because it's cheap, you can play 20 times in a row and because normally there are dozens of machines so you and all of your friends can play.... here that is just not the case... Ace has defiled the beauty that is ski-ball. ANYWAY we walked right by to the pool tables and as we started feed quarters into the side we were ATTACKED! BY THE POOL TABLE NAZI!!!! He yelled at us and told us to remove our drinks from the edge of the table IMMEDIATELY!!!! C'mon man, it's a bar.. what did you expect??? and this guy was JACKED, he should have been putting those steroids to use outside... helping the old tattooed bouncer keep the pretty 19 year-olds out!!!! I mean he came back to check on us and our drinks about 4 times. BOOOOO! They know that it's just the college crew that comes so everyone is treated like a 15 year-old who's about to mess something up. Plus the patrons of this bar really don't know pay-to-play pool table etiquette. We had our quarters piled up on the side and this girl tried to budge us. My friends an i calmly explained that if she would like to play a round then lay down the quarters!!!! I think if you're in the mood to experience the more annoying parts of your college memories (IE, girls in skimpy clothes and guys that spend all day in the gym and say "YEAH!" a lot , all jambed tightly together in a dirty over-priced bar), then this is your place. ugh def not coming back here. whiskey and coke was 6 bucks which isnt too bad for a bar in this neighborhood but you'll definitely be waiting 20 minutes to even get the bartender's attention. i reached the point that I offered to buy a drink to anyone at the bar who could get her to come over and take my order. this is not acceptable for when i want to get drunk fast, aka. anytime i'm out. the crowd was mostly very early 20s, a peppering of 40 yr old men by the bar as well. 4.75 without a doubt! i love ace bar. With my six years of heavy heavy field research on the perfect bar, I can safely say that Ace Bar is NOT the perfect bar, but its pretty close up there. I don't know what peter d. is talking about with 'That Guy'. Perhaps its because I'm a girl who has mastered the 'go away' scowl, but people let me drink alone in peace! Drinks are fairly cheap and the bar maidens are sweet girls. They'll engage you if you're looking for a conversation and leave you be if thats what you please. Bathrooms are clean-- one bathroom with two stalls for the ladies. Sorry gents, Ive never ventured to your b-room so no comment on that Generally I enjoy being left alone at a bar, but IF i wanted a pickup, this scene wouldn't be too hard. Don't hit up the front of the bar for bites as those tables are probably filled with groups who wanna stick together. Head to the back where theres a pool table and other fun games. Be bold and ask a hottie to play with you and teach you how to hit it! yes yes yes, games are a little pricey. $1 for ski ball is too much... but beers and competition seem to do a good job at convincing me its not too steep one more thing: there seems to be a dog every time i go. I love ACE bar. I've been coming here for a while and while I try to avoid it on weekends when it's insanely packed, I come here mostly weekdays. The drinks are very reasonably priced and the bartenders are cool. It's nice to not have to deal with the bouncers which is another reason I like weekdays. Super chill cool place for drinks. I always seem to have a great time at this bar. Something in the air there makes it a really social place. Ski Ball is awesome (though I do miss the big booths they used to have where the machines are now). Great place for friends- it is a big place, so it doesn't feel as crowded as some of the tiny places in the area. ace bar is a lot of fun. i didnt get to stay too long (and ive only been once) but i felt compelled to write this review after a friend so eagerly brought us here. this bar has darts, pool, skee ball, big buck hunter, pin ball etc--. there is a scary hologram poster of a warewolf/bear thing, which i didnt love, but hey it probably gets people talking (im talking about it... sooo case and point) i didnt get to play the games yet, but you can win free beers at skee ball so i'm likely to return. we got there early, at 9:30ish (i think) and we got a table which was really nice, but even if you dont score a seat you wont care. they have awesome deals on all their beers (including yuengling on tap for $4) you wont care where you are as long as you can get to the bar. ambiance is cool--there is a whole wall dedicated to vintage lunch boxes. points for originality, right? good music for the most part--although i did hear the same amy winehouse song 3 times in a matter of an hour and a half. bottom line, VERY excited to go back read more

This is my all time favorite bar in the city! They have great drinks, pool table, skee ball, darts, and even a vintage lunch box collection - really, what else do you need? This is the place that my mind always goes back to when I think of my favorite nights in the city. "They" say you can never go home again...My recent experience at Ace bar proved that to be true. Ace bar was my local haunt when I lived in the East Village. I spent many drunken nights hanging out with the feisty bartenders and playing pool until the fed-up bouncers kicked us out. I moved up north about 5 years ago and, although I visit my old neighborhood once or twice a month, I couldn't bring myself to go back to Ace bar until recently. I met up with a few old friends and we decided to pay our old favorite bar a visit. Not surprisingly Ace bar had moved on without me...changed into something that I didn't recognize. Don't get me wrong, it's still a cool place! Maybe even COOLER? They even have skee ball now, and what's cooler than that!? The staff was nice, but missing that feisty & sarcastic edge that the original Ace crew used to have. Still a pretty awesome place! Definitely worth the bitter-sweet reunion. read more
