I am a huge fan of clever koi, so trying out Across the pond was a no brainer. First of all the place has a comfortable setting with cool seating and dim lighting. The bar has lots of space and is nice to be able to watch the sushi chefs work. The sushi is so fresh with lots of great flavors. I had the tuna nigiri which had such good flavors no need for anything else. The scallops which was soaked over night in miso was one of the best I have ever had. Now for the drinks which I have to say was the extreme highlight of the night. We love watching the mixologist Gavin do his thing. All the different concoctions they come up with is amazing. Hands down the best sushi we've ever had. We enjoy sushi from coast to coast and this sushi was fresh, tasty and unique. The sushi chef pays attention to detail. If you sit at the bar, you'll see how he meticulously hand picks each piece of fish. He also educated us on how to properly eat each piece. All the sauces are made in house, and the fish is seasoned to perfection. The drinks were unique and holy cow, they were amazing. Knocked it out of the ballpark fabulous experience! My friend and I needed to get out and looked for a place open a little later - many restaurants close at 10 o'clock, even on weekends. My friend introduced me to Across the Pond and told me that it was his second time visiting in a week. So I had to try it! The vibe is super chill, comfortable with modern-speakeasy feel. The menu is very small, but my friend describes it well, "Small menu but a perfected menu!" You don't need more options, the ones they have you'll want to re-order! We ordered the tuna sashimi and two specials: The Softshell Crab Roll (SCR) and The Escolar. The tuna is the freshest I've had since being in Hawaii three years ago and the SCR was so amazing, there are no words! You don't need to dip this in extra soy (also made in-house) or add wasabi. You will be blown away with all the different flavors. I can't help but say, it's like sushi dynamite in your mouth - a mix of flavors that surprise you and keep you wanting more. Right away I was greeted by the host/waiter and he told us that there weren't a lot of open seats (they were all reserved, and it was a Saturday night), but none the less he still seated us at the bar before one of their reservation. ETHAN, you the man for real. this is prolly the cutest date spot you'll find; it's so intimate, and the mood is perfect. Modern, but still with a boho chill vibe, I loved it. there was even a live DJ which was dope. The omakase caught my eye right away. I haven't had it since I was in Japan so I asked about it right away. Ethan let us know that since we were on a time restraint, we wouldn't have time for the 1.5 hour omakase which included a 4 course chefs pick of entrees for $50 for two people. We were bummed, but we understood ofc. So we went ahead and ordered the slammin salmon, which had baked salmon on top, and raw salmon on the inside. so good. The sake we ordered ( Bushido tap) went so well with all of the food, and had a sweet taste that went down smooth. The quality of the fish is A1 for real ya'll. I was so surprised to have such fresh fish. Now, what really made the night lit was Ethan let us know that a table opened up, and he would get that Omakase going for us! It was sooooo yummy. If you have the chance PLEASE get the coffee cured salmon. I have never had sashimi like that, and I will go back just for that lol. I loved the twist they put on the ceviche for the first course. ATP has very solid food and though they stray from Japanese sushi style, their creativity, experimentation, and passion for the craft never offends me as a purist. The people that work here are outstanding and folks like Ethan always make us feel welcome and important. The ambience of this place is very intimate! The food was amazing! And the staff was just as superb! I wish I would have taken a picture of the food for you guys, but we were wrapped up in the moment. The only downfall was that the sous chef was the only one and it was a tad busy on a Saturday night. Service is exceptional, efficient but not intrusive. Ambiance is urban chic. Menu is limited but thoughtful. Our party ordered a variety of rolls and nigiri. Here's the thing - the food is creatively prepared with interesting sauces. It's aesthetically pleasing, and tasty. But....it's all umami-heavy, with that rich, smoky mouth feel. If you're a sushi connoisseur, you appreciate the variety of tastes - a fresh, sharp yellowtail, the sweet, melty eel, the fatty ahi. Here, everything from salmon to soft-shell crab to tempura shrimp tastes very similar. Fresh ginger would have been nice as a palate cleanser between dishes but is not offered. We've had sushi everywhere from Hawaii to Vancouver, and all over the West Coast (including Nobu Malibu which was pretty amazing) so we've had some truly exceptional offerings. This was ok but not exceptional. Prices were reasonable, comparable to other mid-level sushi bars. Four stars for service, ambiance, and presentation. My boyfriend and I had a great date night at Across the Pond! We had multiple servers taking care of our table - all were very friendly and eager to talk through the menu with us. They have an awesome cocktail list that even included some of our favorites from Clever Koi. Their food menu is small but thoughtful with some unique items. The staff was amazing, they were all really nice and helpful! Food was amazing too! This is absolutely one of my new fav sushi spots! It's beautiful and intimate inside, not very large but great for couples and small parties. We sat at the bar near the sushi chefs and it was such a wonderful experience. Our server was very attentive and super knowledgeable, you feel like you have your own personal sushi and drink advisor which makes it so memorable. If you look on the wall you'll see a chalk board with their specialties, I highly recommend trying unique items on the board because they are delicious and can sell out fast. The sushi is high quality grade and the rice is the perfect temperature and consistency which is important for my sushi lovers out there! We had one of their recommended sweet citrus sakis with Asahi and make our own little saki bombs and it was a great combo! (They do not have hot saki). One of the things we loved most that we had never had was the pickled wasabi, it's so good we were eating it on the sushi and by itself! Sushi is my favorite so I was very excited to try out this restaurant as I've heard great things and we have previously enjoyed dining at clever koi. Restaurant is small so I would suggest making a reservation. Ambiance is cute too. We made a reservation for 5:45 and were excited that they offered a happy hour of 20% off certain menu items until it's over at 6. Well we arrived and were seated by our reservation time but were bummed out server didn't come and take our food order until 6:01. Could he truly have just been giving us time to look over the menu? Possibly? But I feel like he just waited for happy hour to be over. Oh well. Food itself was good and more importantly good quality. Sad to say they were out of several items that I really was looking forward to trying. The menu is minimal but the quality makes up for it. I will say we had 3 cocktails, 12 pieces of nigiri and 2 rolls plus a 20% tip came out to around $175 for two adults. We didn't leave starving but could have easily eaten more if they had more options. While it was a generally good experience I'll probably try a few other sushi spots before returning. read more

I was absolutely floored by the battery quality of the salmon sushi. It simply melted in my mouth. I asked where it came from and they respond Japan. They actually flew the fish over from Japan to make the sushi from. How awesome was that. The fish keep coming and it's simply got better and better at the evening progressed. Incredible service and beautifully fresh sushi. The yellowtail simply melts in your mouth. What I found interesting was how many items were spicy. I love spicy things as much as the next Phoenician. However, I think a lot of the flavors were overtaken by the spiciness. We ordered the soft-shell crab roll, spicy yellowtail roll, slammin' salmon roll, and the yellowtail nigiri. We made the mistake of not choosing a non-spicy roll to cleanse our palates, as even the nigiri had a tiny slice of jalapeno on it. Granted all of it was good, but dang. I would say from worst to best: sushi Brokers, Uchi, Roka, and at number one you have​ Across the Pond. Actually, I shouldn't even put Sushi Brokers on here because it's just straight disappointing and an insult to Sushi. The gap from second to ATP is substantial too. One of the stand out attributes ATP possesses is the attentiveness of their servers. They will tell you all about the dishes and ingredients no matter how busy. Across the Pond had been on my list for a while, so when I found myself with a free night and they had an available reservation, I jumped at the chance to try them out. I sat at the bar and appreciated that even though I was a solo guest, I didn't get ignored. I can't tell you how many times that has happened at other places. The menu is concise. After chatting with one of the bar team, I tried the Stampede, one of their drink specials. It was nicely spirit forward and a little sweeter than I would normally choose, but a good start. With that, I picked four nigiri: otoro, aburi, escolar, and kinmedai. Each one was delicious--my favorite was the escolar. With my next round, my bartender recommended the Ume highball, which I loved! It was really refreshing with a salty savoriness that paired well with my next nigiri selections, chutoro, seared scallop, and the coffee cured salmon, along with the karai hamachi. I loved the soy Fresno Chile garnish so much that the bartender gave me a little bonus serving to help finish up drink. Service was friendly and appropriately attentive and I felt really pampered. It's Friday, date night, and our minds were set on Clever Koi. When we arrived, we were told it would be an hour wait for two! Since we'd already come all that way, we decided to power through, at which point the hostess suggested we have a drink at Across the Pond. We accepted. Across the Pond is as cleverly named as its neighbor, and never before has waiting for a table been so unique and enjoyable. You can certainly dine here by itself; they have a delightful menu of Japanese-inspired dishes. There are classic sushi selections like salmon and yellowtail, a tempting shrimp ceviche, and a long list of creative cocktails. With what we believed to be an hour to burn, we got the spicy tuna roll, and I ordered a mango kolsch (pictured). I wasn't picking up the mango as much as I would've liked to, but this was nevertheless the ideal draft beer: ice cold and refreshing, light and only mild in its sweetness. I regret not photographing our spicy tuna roll. The presentation was better than any sushi I've ever been served, and that includes that airport sashimi in Tokyo one time! Behold a dish that's delicately crafted, vibrant in many flavors, and increasingly enjoyable with every bite. The ultimate token of good faith was that my girlfriend ate two pieces. She doesn't go in for raw fish (except Hawaiian poke, but that's a review for another time), so for her to not only try the roll, but declare its superiority over most seafood she's had -- my five-star accolades pale in comparison. Above all, the service was impeccable. Clever Koi actually had us waiting for only half an hour (instead of the full hour we'd geared up for), and we were lingering with our appetizer and my beer when we learned our table was ready. The staff at Across the Pond ensured our table would be secured, encouraging us to enjoy our time there and not rush. We were appreciative of their consideration. It was unexpected for us to stop by Across the Pond today, but how glad we are that we did. If you're waiting for your table at Clever Koi, do pay them a visit. I had to try this place being that Clever Koi is one of my favorite restaurants in Phoenix. Once I arrived, I couldn't help but notice the very fun and hip decor. The crowd here was young and hip. After arriving I was seated immediately. I came with a friend and we were only here for drinks. The drink menu was nicely stacked with various cocktails. I was a little surprised to see a large number of clever koi cocktails on the menu. One gripe with this place is that it almost appears to be just an extension of Clever Koi. That's not necessarily a problem but I was hoping it had a little bit more of it's own identity. Given that Clever Koi has many of the same cocktails, and can even make the ones from ATP, why wouldn't I just go to Clever Koi when the food menu is far more extensive? No reservations were needed although the place filled up pretty quickly as the night went by. The craft cocktails were so pretty to look at, tasted delicious and had funny names. I had The Enabler which was bourbon based and very tasty. For the food, we had the hamachi, spicy yellowtail roll, salmon, toro, and my personal favorite: the uni. I used to come to Across the pond allllll the time! Literally it was an every week thing for me. I always got the avocado rolls and they were to die for. I have brought my friends and family here, even had birthday celebrations here. I recently moved to Tempe so I haven't been in awhile. I had been trying to get a weekend reservation for a long time and it's just been so booked up. I finally got a reservation for Sunday night. I was so pumped and when we arrived for our reservation my heart was crushed. The service we had grown so used to, was lacking severely. The atmosphere was the same but I was able to notice many differences. They added what seemed like extra tables- which cut into the already small space there was. We were told they had NO avocados whatsoever and they could not even make me one roll. The staff seemed to be newer folks. That to me was odd, and I've literally never been told that before. I didn't really want to try anything else but I figured why not? Since I'm already here. I got a veggie roll. When my roll came out, there was Avocado in it and avocado purée was all over our plates for decoration. I honestly wish they would have tried, even with the minimal avocado they may have had, to accommodate me. Instead I settled with something I didn't really want that wasn't really good. I was baffled - like how can you tell someone you're out of something and we can't make what you want. Then proceed to put that ingredient in other rolls? WHACK. On top of that the server was just so "Blah" like he could care less about us or our wants he did not even offer to try anything to advocate for what I wanted to order. As someone who used to be considered a "regular" at Across the Pond I'm really heavy hearted to write a negative review but also as a highly revered location to run out of an ingredient like that is kind of unacceptable, and never in the year or more I've been going has that ever happened. Since they have been booked nonstop I worry the quality of the food and the experience factor is really suffering at the cost of trying to have more people dine there. My people and I have easily spent thousands of dollars at this establishment. I'm sad to say I will not return after that experience. read more

I'm a margarita type of gal, the Golden Child was the perfect choice for me. I ordered a slammin salmon, and nigiri (coffee cured salmon, yellowtail, bluefin chu toro). Literally everything has my tastebuds so excited. I love the unique flavors and the freshness you can taste.
