Their menu is limited with a daily specials board, but as someone who is indecisive, I appreciated this. What we ordered: Salty POG & Riding the Pine drinks: 8/10. These are cocktails but we asked for them to be made non-alcoholic (as lightweights lol). Very refreshing and fruity! The passionfruit flavor was good but every sip was either too salty or too sweet. Good to try and I can imagine this would be great as a cocktail. Aburi Salmon Belly Nigiri: 10/10. Biased because I love salmon belly and anything seared, so this was the ultimate perfect bite. So buttery and smoky. My favorite of the night! My friend ordered a scallop nigiri and she enjoyed hers too. Kinilaw: 6/10. This is a Filipino-inspired ceviche dish and it was good, however the fish was a little too tough and stringy for me. The rice paper crisps was a great component though and I liked the seasoning on it. Natsu Roll: 7/10. Delicate and bright flavors. On the lighter side and the yellowtail was fresh! Some of us ordered food, but most of us just ordered 1 cocktail. I got to try 1 salmon belly nigiri for $5/piece, which was so rich and buttery and soft. I got the Calpico Milk Punch $16, comprised of monopolowa gin, creme de flora, grapefruit, lemon, calpico. It was a clear, clean cocktail that tasted sweet but inert. I also tried my friend's Commintment Issues $16, comprised of kuro kabuto sake, kiyomi rum, cantaloupe puree, lime, agave. Sweeter than my drink, refreshing. Another friend ordered us tequila shots, on the pricier side at $13 each. Admittedly as a non sushi-lover, I enjoyed my experience here, especially the creative cocktail options and moody atmosphere. I think if they had 1-2 more servers that would help with the speed of service. We came to celebrate a birthday and even though they don't have desserts on the menu, they gave us a free dessert from the sister restaurant, Clever Koi. Food was all delicious and they choose an anime to show at the bar TV every day; loved that it was Spy X Family when we visited. I saw an instagram reel promoting a happy hour at Across the Pond (20% off your tab) and was intrigued to see it was a fusion of Japanese and Filipino cuisine which is my exact ethical background. So I was very excited to try some familiar flavors with creative twists. The space is across from Clever Koi, and it's a bit small so if you're going on the weekend during dinner time, I think I'd make a reservation if I had more than 2 people. We were one of 3 couples in the restaurant at 5:15 pm on a Friday, so it was a bit quiet. They do have anime playing on a TV behind the bar. We started off with a drink each from their very creative menu. I ordered the calpico milk punch which I learned doesn't have actual calpico in it, but the gin is infused/washed with the calpico which is why it doesn't look or taste like calpico. We ordered some negi toro, poke on a leaf, and the magic carpet which was a single nigiri with I believe it was chutoro topped with uni. They were all good, but it didn't match the pricing. I've been to many sushi places in the valley now, and $15 for the magic carpet was a bit puzzling for what it was. We left still hungry, so I'd say this would be a place to start your night. I didn't order the sinigang as I couldn't wrap my head around the description of the dish vs what it normally is, and I wish there was a bit more Filipino influence. The bartenders were very knowledgable on the menu and absolutely lit up when my boyfriend started chatting with them about fantasy football. It's definitely a good spot for a date or going to hangout with some friends. It's also located next to the clever Koi and George and Dragon, so if you're waiting to be seated, you can grab a drink there. Also the staff are very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. They offered great recommendations, especially when it came to their specials and drinks. I ordered their honest liar drink and their yellowtail and slammin salmon rolls. I went a few days ago with my wife and it took 35 min (after ordering) for our first roll, 15 more minutes for 4 pieces of nigiri, and 25 more minutes for our last roll which were all ordered within 5 minutes of sitting down. I first ordered the calpulco punch drink and asked our waiter what he thought and he didn't give much input. When the drink arrived it was in the tiniest glass I've ever gotten and was worth about 4 sips. I've never seen such a small amount of a drink for $16 and was heavily disappointed. We also tried the sashimi lime butter which was amazing and the yellowtail roll. Both were great but overall the service was not good. When asking the waiter at the end a question I got a little attitude. The fish is fresh and the flavors are out of this world. I loved the little bit of garlic crunch on top of the yellowtail roll and the Slammin salmon was so tasty. The soft shell crab was not my favorite roll just because it felt like it was a rice overload. Welcome to 2023! It's super tough to rate any non vegan spot for me, mostly because my opinion is solely based on the only *vegan option on the menu, the *one vegetable roll. It's mostly on me for not previewing the menu, but most sushi spots have a couple of options, some sort of veggie tempura, sides of veg, etc. This is about as no frills of a menu that you'll find at any sushi spots in town, perhaps that's closer to traditional as you'll find from a spot plucked straight from Japan, but it was interesting as a non-meat eater to see very few options. With all that said, this was one of the best vegetable rolls I've had from any sushi place in Phoenix. While I wouldn't call myself a sushi restaurant connoisseur, I have been to six or seven in the past couple of years and, you guessed it, had their veggie rolls, avocado rolls, etc. So not every spot in town, but enough to sing the praise of the vegetable roll from Across the Pond. At one point the server told me there was an off menu avocado roll I could order, so I ordered an additional vegetable roll and an avocado roll to go with it. Yes, it too was one of the best versions of an avocado roll I've had in the valley. Vegans, don't be terribly scared to dine here, but beware the ONLY option are the drinks, the vegetable roll and the off menu avocado roll. It was all super tasty, just don't expect any apps or sides to go along with your meal. read more

This review is for a dinner I had way back in September, so all of this is merely from faint memories. In short, everything was good. Surprisingly fresh. The coffee-cured salmon was quite an experience. If only it was a tad less salty, it would've been up there with some of the best nigiris ever devised. The uni hand roll was surprisingly cheap for what you get as well. It is real uni, not a bad amount, and the balance of flavors was great. Honestly though, the thing that deserved mentioning the most is the chill vibe. Real nice jazzy café vibes in the middle of the desert. Makes you feel like you're in a big city for once. The fact that it's pretty empty compared to the "main branch" of Clever Koi across the... alley also helped. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be a pond. Quite a missed opportunity, if you ask me. Seriously, the vibe couldn't be put into words. If you're an urbanite like me, you just gotta experience the magic. Not sure if most people 'round the area would. I grew up in a busy place, so. Taste-wise, it's like hovering around the 4-4.5 stars range. But just because of the vibe and the locale, I'm gonna give this the full A-tier. Really amazing quality fish. It's a small place so would recommend making a reservation on weekend nights and it has a fun darker vibe to it. Their prices are definitely on the higher end, but It's completely worth the money. The yellowtail nigiri was some of the best I have tried. I don't usually get yellowtail as nigiri and stick to it in rolls but man theirs was amazing. The coffee salmon nigiri was so interesting and it really works well. The slamming salmon roll was delicious but def spicy, so if you're a weak sauce, like myself, just a warning lol I definitely want to come back and try more. Their coaktails are great!!
