Very dissapointed this year 270$ to open my pool, i was holding payment till they came back and cleaned the pool. Trusting that the second time they came out the would clean it, my pool is dirty, bungie cord from over the winter still in the pool after I asked for them to take it out when the cleaned it. The bottom of the pool is filthy. What do you have to do to get accurate services you pay for. I was working my fault and didnt feel I needed to micro manage, they were gone in about 25 minutes. I gave gary my check before starting my day at work and trusted my pool would be ready. Its disgusting and deplorable. I feel I got robbed, paid for services and parts i didnt need and my pool wasnt cleaned. Now im going to have to try and find someone else that can come out and just clean a pool. He said he would take care of it, but he didnt. I would get fired for providing such a poor service. Feeling anxious out of 270$ and nothing was accomplished. Its pretty dissapointing to see people dont take pride in their work or lack work ethic. Its my loss, i should have waited to see the pool before oaying. The owner Gary treats his customers as if he is doing you a favor and charges considerably for his services which is done by his wonderful crew who is treated very poorly. Customers are not allowed to speak to the crew and must only communicate through Gary. Customers walk on eggshells for fear he will cut off his service if he is not treated with respect. Gary has a very fragile ego, if you get into any disagreement over price or service he will cut you off. The crew is great, Gary is a misogynistic jerk. read more

I had called this company and made a reservation for them to open my pool. I was told they would be in my area on Wednesday and set the appointment for then giving my name, address, pool description, etc. They had told me they would call to confirm the day before (Tues), which they never did. I took off a day of work to be at home while they serviced the pool on the Wednesday appointment (as I have never owned a pool before). At 11am, I called the company to see what time they would be coming by. I was then told that they would not come as I lived too far away. Mind you, this was the SAME person that took my address and scheduled the appointment. Was then told they could "most likely" get me in that Saturday and that they would call me back later in the day to confirm. Two weeks later still haven't heard back from that conversation. VERY unprofessional and disorganized! If this is how they handle appointments to new clients, I'd hate to see their pool work. Glad I did not give them a dime. read more

Owning a pool in Chicago is somewhat of a challenge, as it's difficult to find available, reputable pool services, supplies, or assistance with repairs in a small, season driven area. Since available resources are limited in this market, when you find an exceptional full service swimming pool provider, the response has been one of relief, and wanting to share my good fortune with others! Gary, the owner of Action Pool and Supplies, is outstanding. He is extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and has come to my home twice to assist me with pump related problems, both of which he resolved quickly by merit of his expertise. He has made solid recommendations regarding the use of products for the pool as well, providing chemicals at a very fair price that actually work (to abate problems with algae, for example), which saves me time, money, and aggravation! In regards to fair pricing, I was in his store on Harlem Ave recently, and overheard him talking to a customer about the recommended use of a specific product. When the customer stated he would take two bottles, Gary countered by saying "you really only need one bottle, so there's no need to spend the extra money," which astounded me, as how many profit driven store owners would actually discourage a customer making a purchase to save them from spending money they didn't need to? Gary would, which indicates he's ethical too. He has won my customer loyalty for an eternity of Chicago summers, with my pool maintenance needs now resolved as a result of having found Gary at Action Pool and Supplies. I needed someone to help me close my pool at the end of the season last year because of a physical condition, caused by a car accident. Action Pool, which have been highly recommended by a few very good friends of mine. The two guys that came out were GREAT. Very polite and professional. Did the closing fast and complete. Initially I called them to fix my pool heater, but the weather still wouldn't cooperate even with a heater. So, the guys said they will fix it when they open the pool this season. It is now August 1st, 2018. I had made my appointment for June ^. I didn't know they were close on Wednesday. Needless to say, I called when they were open and talked to the owner, Gary. He very very nice, polite and seemed professional. I told him everything I wrote above. He related to me, that they don't usually work on HAYWARD pool heaters, but would have apart on the truck for his guys to install. After calling and talking to Gary many times, in which he kept saying his guys will come out, they NEVER did. I did NOT and have NOT gotten any phone calls or messages to let me know the status of my Service call(s), or promises to come out. Is it just me or am " cursed" by the Pool Gods? How can everything be working perfectly when you close the pool for the winter and everything wants to leak come spring. To the rescue, Action Pool and the friendly folks that work there. When the wife spots you walking out the door and says "oh honey" while you're out can you pick up a few items for me. Wouldn't you know she yells out a few things, no written list, and hands you an O-ring for something leaking on the pool. I get to Action Pool and naturally I'm asked "what's it from". Give me a second to call the wife and find out. Of course she doesn't answer the phone. But like said, to the rescue is one of the staff. He comes out of the parts room with an exact match. And while I'm waiting for two minutes they service three customers that leave with big smiles on their faces just like mine. I've use them every season for 5 years and never a problem but whats more important is that this season I had a major problem 2 days before I was hosting a pool party. I can't say enough good things about this store. He always helps me troubleshoot problems with my pool. He doesn't push people to buy every chemical he has like other places do. He is always friendly and willing to answer questions. My filter motor did not start the other day and I called to order a new one. it was 10 years old and I assumed nothing could be done. He asked me what it was doing and said he would take a look at it if I brought it in.. He was able to get it going and saved me over 300.00. This may be a long review but it will be thorough to give everyone an idea of what I went through in the past two weeks with my 2008 Caldera hot tub and how it got fixed before Thanksgiving. The owner of Action Pool and Spa, Gary saved the day and winter for us. So, I was doing my typical emptying, cleaning, and refilling of my hot tub for the winter months and was in need of a replacement Bromine cartridge holder (the O ring broke) and it was a Sunday. The place I usually go to over on North Ave was closed and found a place out in Naperville that was open (I know how does Naperville figure into this review, it just does, just like how does posi trac work, it just does). Anyway, spoke to the dude out in Naperville and he was a wealth of information. Got my cartridge holder replacement as well as a new chemical system. I switched from Spa frog to Monarch (another story for another time but it has to do with the review). Started using the new chemicals as well as this chemical called Protect Plus. All of a sudden this STUFF, (thought it was the chlorine granules, it wasn't) it almost looked like bits of shedding skin (IT WAS GROSS AND FREAKED ME OUT!!!!) Then all this scum appeared around the tub and I damn near lost my mind. That's it, ran a completed jet flush, emptied the tub again, cleaned, shop vac'd, refilled, the whole nine yards. Had my husband come out to verify that when the tub was refilled , water was clear and pristine. The next morning, there it was, the bits of shedded skin. I am surpised my neighbors did not have me sectioned, the tantrum was EPIC!!!!! I did not want to go back out to Naperville, did not want to deal with my usual people over on North Ave (lovely people but some of their techs are idiots, just saying!) Let me go over to Action Pool and Spa. They are a few blocks from my home, next to my favorite Pizza place, maybe they could help but to be honest, I was defeated, demoralized and almost ready to set fire to the hot tub (neighbors would have had me arrested if I did that!) Walked up to the front door and before I got my hand on the door handle, this adorable, sweet, cheeky, handsome, little Yorkie greeted me at the door. I immediately felt a shift of the Earth, the equilibrium was normalizing, an overwhelming wave of relief coursed through me. I knew help, justice and redemption were on its way, after all, I have two Yorkies and here was a Yorkie before me, it only makes complete lunatic sense that all my spa problems would be fixed. I flung open the door and two steps in I am on my knees (no, not praying to the almighty, although maybe I should have, anyway) playing with this adorable little mite named BUDDY!!!! After 20 minutes of me playing with Buddy and the owner looking at me like "Do you need some help with something or are you some random chick who walks into pool stores to play with dogs?" No, Gary did not say that to me but he saw a desperate spa owner. I explained everything to Gary, what I was using, what I used before, how all of this happened when I switched over to this new chemical system, showed him the pictures, gave him my blood type (kidding), etc. Gary started working with the process of deduction. We talked for a good 45 minutes to an hour going over everything and his thought was that it was not shedding skin particles but it was probably calcium from the heating element from when I used the Protect Plus. The hot tub had sat for 5 years (out of country) and I never heard or used this stuff called protect plus. It protects your equipment. He wanted to call his vendor friend and get his thoughts. Gary asked for a water sample and brought him that immediately and while he felt strongly, he just wanted confirmation. Called me two hours later and said yep, it was calcium buildup from the heater, here is what I want you to do. Double up on the Protect Plus, replace your filter (of which I have many, I don't play when it comes to a dirty hot tub, NO THANK YOU!!!) (By the way the new filter that I put in after the refill and replaced was absolutely greasy and filthy after 24 hours, just tells you about my problem) and call him on Saturday. So, I double up on Protect Plus, put in a new filter and just walked away. I could not bare to look at the hot tub any more. This all happened on Wednesday a week before Thanksgiving. Thursday morning comes, I open up the tub lid and cue the music, WATER WAS CLEAR!!!!!!!! I danced my jig, put the gas cans away and went over to Action Pool and Spa and gave Gary the good news. To be on the safe side, Gary had me double up again and switch out the filters (I have been on a 4 filter rotation these past several days) and the water has been clear and the filters are getting less and less gross looking. Gary knows his business and knows customer service. He knows the neighborhood he serves and keeps cost respectable. It also helps that his "Partner In Crime" Buddy is adorable and can Salsa dance! Has all my future business!!! read more

Gary is very nice and tries to be helpful, however......as other reviews have said....they are extremely disorganized and quite honestly not very good at mechanical things going wrong such as heaters, pumps, gages, etc..... you have to call and remind them every single day that you have the problem only to be pacified that they will come out and never do........horrible follow thru... read more

Gary, as others have said is a nice guy, but is a chronic, no call, no show type of business person. I had an appt. to open my 20,000 gallon in ground made with Gary 2 weeks prior to the date, and he never showed up or called. I called the next day to his store and a woman answered. I heard him talking to a customer in the background and the lady said he'd call me back as soon as he was done with the client. He hasn't called back, and now it's 48 hours later. So, 3 days after Gary was supposed to come open my pool, he did not have the courtesy to show up or even call. Do not use or rely on Gary or his store, you will get let down, and he doesn't give a care. Find a higher rated pool guy on Yelp or Angie's List. read more

Highly recommend this place. Being first time pool owners we weren't really sure what we needed or how to get started. Walking in, the owner was so very friendly and we were immediately greeted by the cutest yorkie pup named buddy. The owner explained everything we needed to do and didn't try to over sell us on anything. He told us we would be good to start off with a few products and if we couldn't get our water balanced out then we could come in with a sample and he would help us figure it out. When we got home, we realized the chlorine tablets weren't in the bag. They must have been left out on the counter. I went back the next day with out a receipt but the owner remembered me. They had already run out of the smaller size of chlorine tablets that I purchased the day before, so he gave us the jumbo size at no charge and without even requesting a receipt. We bought our first pool last year and towards the end of summer we started having problems wirth green stuff forming on the botton of the poo, otherwise it was crystal clear. We brought in a water sample and the owner was very helpful and told us exactly what to do and it worked. So we went back to him when it was time to close the pool. Instead of trying to sell us all this fancy stuff we didn't need he told us what he did and saved us a lot of money. Well I was concerned that when we opened the pool it would be green ( it was alwys like that when I was a kid). However today when we opened it, it was crystal clear just had some stuff on the bottom that needed to be vacuumed. When we went over to action the owner again told us what he uses ( we have alow chlorine system that uses a mineral cartridge) and saveed us a lot of money.
