I met Jorge as a bartender at a local spot called Jack's and since I frequented Jack's a bit when I first got to this area, he gave me his info and told me that his full time gig was as a barber. I had a 2 day work conference I needed to go so I decided to him him a shot instead of going to a Supercuts or some type of corporate haircut place, which I've had bad experiences in the past. Since I wanted Jorge cut my hair, I needed to confirm a time when he would be able to cut my hair. They also do walk ins but since I wasn't familiar with the other barbers, I thought it would be best to just have him block out a time for me. Anyway we set a time for 12pm and since I wasn't familiar with the area where this shop was, I came a bit early to make sure I was there on time. The good thing about making an appointment was that because I came early and called ahead he said he was able to take me earlier. This place wasn't hard to find but since it was raining that day and I was new to the area, I had to find street parking (seems like all street parking or garage parking comes at a cost in the Bay Area). But I found metered parking close to the shop and with me being there a bit early I ended up eating at a pizza joint a few doors down from the barber shop. He was able to cut my hair and was good at the cut. He even rinsed out my hair after requesting to do so, since I was going straight into work right after. He was pretty concise with my cut, showing me as he went along and giving me a play by play with what he was doing. He was consistent with this process as he did the same for the client before me. I was satisfied with the cut and left content. Since I still haven't found a place to live, this will determine if I would return since I would preferably like to find a new barber relatively close to whenever I decide to live. But the service was good, it was just much pricier than what I'm used to in Houston and now living in the Bay Area. But Jorge was good. Super communicative and patient with how you tell him to cut your hair. I noticed that this location also won a few awards that they displayed on the wall. The ambience of the establishment was nice with the black and gold contrast as well as a wall of greenery (not sure if it was live plants or fake) and 2 waster fountain features on both ends of the store front window. I needed a little shock to the system so I decided to step outside of my marriage and try a new barber. Words I thought I'd never say... I somehow ended up in San Mateo at a barbershop called "Chairmen". I don't remember the thought process or even me selecting the place. To be honest, I don't even remember my siblings names sometimes, it's really just me living La Vida Loca at this point. The neighborhood was quiet. Very relaxed, you can hear the birds chirping. That's a tell tale sign that you are most likely in a place that you cannot afford the mortgage for. My area is usually a bunch of jackhammers hitting the floor at 8am paired with my neighbors playing 1:1 basketball in their kitchen with an ANVIL cosplaying as a basketball. Anyway, as I enter the shop, I'm backhanded by a remarkable smell. Could've been Louis Vuitton L'Immensité or Dollar Tree Car Scents, either way, absolutely stunning. The floor layout kinda reminds me of, and don't quote me on this, heaven. Everything is clean and white like that one popular 80's activity that the rich people were partaking in. IYKYK. I was warmly greeted by a gentleman named Yacoub. He's apparently the owner, which makes sense. He had a confidence about him that I cannot put into words. The shop was very busy but he was juggling multiple personalities with such grace and class. It really felt like a welcoming environment. So much so, that I did not mind waiting for the cut. It was truly a barbershop culture that we've been missing in our neighborhoods. No one really goes to the shops anymore to converse. It's a lost art and a piece of history that needs to return. This is a man's way of getting therapy without asking for it. This environment was extremely inclusive and welcoming. Fast forward to the cut. Yacoub's hands were softer than linen sheets. This is the closest thing I'll ever have to a touch of a woman that's not my mother. He worked on every single one of my hairs like he had a personal vendetta against them. Blading them up to a calculated angle similar to a samurai in battle. The crispiness of the edges felt like bacon that's been cooking for longer than they should've been. I felt like I was handsome for the first time in my miserable life. I finally felt some confidence in myself and this was all based off of one 30 minute haircut session. Remarkable what a haircut can do for one's psyche. Anyone looking for a barber/therapist/friends/confidant/etc should highly consider coming into Chairmen. From what I've seen, all barbers who are occupying a chair there treat every customer with the same respectable due diligence. Everyone comes in happy but leaves even happier.
