I read MANY, MANY reviews for all the major (and some minor) rental car companies at O'Hare. They were all universally bad with horror stories that made my blood curdle. I finally made my pick based solely on price. After all, what difference could it make if they were all horrible? I might as well get the best rate, and Advantage had it. I armed myself with other customer warnings about what to look for and hoped for the best. What I found was not what I was expecting. Firstly, there is only one shuttle bus for all the rental car companies and it takes you directly to the rental car center. It was waiting at the curb when we walked out of the terminal. No wait at all! Unlike a lot of the negative reviews posted, the bus driver was more than happy to help us load our luggage onto the bus. When we got there at 7:00pm on a Sat. we found NO LINE at the Advantage counter. Only one customer who was just finishing up, and we were next. There was no particular hard sell to try to get us to buy extra features like the toll package, extra insurance, and the full tank payment allowing you to return the car on Empty. My research had shown that they were all unnecessary for us, so when they were offered we declined them and that was that. We knew to avoid the Toll Roads and always found alternate routes to avoid the transponder charges. The car we had reserved was no longer available, and Sheree the counter clerk nicely offered us an upgraded car for a little more money. When we declined she gave it to us anyway for no extra charge as she could see we had a lot of luggage and she was worried the smaller cars that were available might not have enough space for it all. When we got to the pickup area at first we were confused as to where the car was located in the garage. When Crystal, who worked in the office there, pointed it out to us we were concerned that it was a long way to walk with all our luggage. She ran and got us a cart and after we loaded it up she even helped us push it over to the car. Since she was by our car she made one more visual inspection before we left, and holding the inspection sheet in her hand, she noted a rip on the passenger seat that hadn't been noted before. We thanked her. Before we said goodbye she also gave us specific directions as to which way to go to get to our hotel once we got out to the street. She was very kind and helpful. The car itself was great... clean & in good running order the entire 11 days we used it. When we returned to the car rental center we found the drop off area for Advantage easily. We were greeted by a very nice gentleman who told us we were free to go, but when he saw all our luggage he got us a cart and even helped us wheel it all the way out to the waiting shuttle buses on the second level. He then helped us find the right bus for our airline's terminal. I would use Advantage again without hesitation. I'm not sure what happened to all the others who had horror stories to tell, and I'm not saying their stories are untrue. I'm sorry for their misadventures, but we had a great experience! In my opinion if you arm yourself with knowledge about the places YOU can be taken advantage of, you can and should take advantage of Advantage. read more

It's the first time I used Advantage in the last two decades, and the experience was horrible, never ever has similar experience anywhere on the earth. This company should be out of business. I believe it sets up everyone when possible. I booked a car at Priceline with $141, My flight was deyed so I was delayed around one hour by the time I was at the counter. I was told the car I booked not available anymore and I need to pay $400 for a similar replacement. People in front of me, during my converstaion with the staff, and people came after me, NO ONE got what they booked, everyone was very upset. The staff attitude were very bad, badically "take it or leave it!" Worst car rental. They lied to us several times first was about tolls. We told them we did not need insurance they charged us anyway. When we got to the hotel we checked our charges. We called them there number wasn't working. We called corporate they did absolutely nothing and wouldn't transfer us to the office we rented from or let us talk to manager. We had an ok experience at this place. They rent their cars out at a really good rate, so I guess you get what you pay for. After getting out of O'Hare, we waited about 20 minutes for the shuttle to take us to the car rental hub. The drivers don't really help with the luggage, so you're on your own. If you're elderly or can't lift your luggage, I wouldn't recommend that you rent from this car company. When you rent from their website, you don't get to pick which car you want, you just pick the size. We like the sedan that we got. My hubby is tall and he usually doesn't like sedans, because he has no leg room. With this sedan, he actually had leg room. It was a Kia Optima and the car is really fuel efficient. They always try to upsell insurance and other things, when you're at the counter trying to get everything set up. The lady at the counter told us that gas on the outside was $3 a gallon and that they charged a cheaper rate if I wanted to bring the car back empty. I said ok, figured it would save me the trouble of fueling up before returning the car. I was charged $54 for it. However, once we drove out of there, we saw some places that sold gas for $2.60. Once the tank was empty it only cost us $35 to fill the tank. Upon returning the car the tank was 75% full. We weren't sure how many other places we had to go to. I called them on the phone and told them the situation. I asked if I could get an adjustment on the $54, or if they could just refund me the whole amount and I'd bring it back with a full tank. They said no, that they don't do refunds and that If I brought it back with a full tank that I would still be charged the $54. Other car rentals work differently. I remember the same thing happened in Vegas with another rental company. They refunded me the portion that wasn't used. I won't be opting for this service the next time I rent a car. I'd rather just fill the tank myself and bring it in full. That's all I have to say for this place. read more

Frankly, this place is ghetto. That said, you can get a good price here. Just keep in mind: you get what you pay for. The pickup process was slow and there was little attention to detail. They gave us keys and directed us to the wrong car. The paperwork showed dings and scratches in the wrong spots. Additionally, the car didn't have cruise control. I didn't know they still made cars like that. I wish we knew before we were halfway to Green Bay. Oh well. We were also told that the gas stations charged more for gas than they did. I'm not saying they were lying, but that turned out to be false. Thankfully we declined. The shuttle service was good, so no complaints there. This is a no-frills rental company. Waited for the shuttle for 20 minutes after calling twice asking for it, was directed to the wrong pickup spot twice, painfully slow and chaotic check-in process once you get to their building, left a truck blocking another customer's rental for 15 minutes. Vehicle was not bad, just a few stains on the seats. Adding more at the return : crazy signage with no clear direction on where/how to park, terribly rude woman told me to back up and change the way I parked, twice. Never again. read more

Bad rental car experience. After watching Hertz, Enterprise, etc go by 3 or 4 times I finally called Advantage. After an endless amount of menu options and waiting, I was on the phone with someone who barely spoke English. I asked him where to catch the shuttle since I assumed I wasn't in the right place, and he was telling me to go to the rental counter 'in the airport' ... I walked everywhere trying to look for a counter since he said I had to check in there first... I finally called back and it was him again, confusing me. Turns out he actually meant for me to go to catch a shuttle at door 3H. I said--why did you tell me to go to the rental counter? Why didn't you just tell me to get the shuttle??? The process was okay once I got there. The car was fine. Return was decent as well... unless most other places where they come out to you, expect to pull up and walk inside. Overall this was a huge waste of my time. The shuttle frequency was weak and you're better off paying a little more to rent from someone else. read more

Upon arrival in Tampa, I head over to the rental car area and find out Advantage is no longer there. I call their number and a gentleman answers and says "unfortunately, we are no longer in Tampa". Rented a car through a 3rd party who I have never had issues with.. While making my reservation I definitely noticed some of the rentals you were required to show a plane ticket, I can read and so I understood this and chose a reservation that did not require a plane ticket. Upon arrival they REFUSED to give me the car since I don't have a credit card and only a debit. They said they required a 200 dollar security deposit which is fine and normal... but only credit, not debit or cash... so they accept credit money and not real money.. so strange. After arguing with the counter dude for a few minutes I gave up and decided to focus on bigger problems at hand, not having that car that day would make me late for a job which was more important at the moment, so I left to get a car elsewhere (50 dollars worth of LYFTS to get me back in time since I was stranded near the airport. To put the icing in the cake, Carmine the desk jockey laughed and talked shit with the next customer at my expense as I huffed away in crisis. Seriously lacks of empathy with your employees. And the final kick in the privates from Advantage? They still charged me the deposit on my debit card for 200 bones which was still absent from my bank days later. I was in town for a few days and booked Advantage through a 3rd party, Hotwire. I actually didn't look at all the reviews prior to picking up my car, considering it wasn't a known brand to me, I overthink it. All I needed was a car to get around a few days while in town. I arrived Monday afternoon and found myself the only person there, other than the representative taking care of me. So as far as slow service, didn't apply to me. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes, with paperwork and all. My car was readily available, a 2017 Economy car, clean and ready to go. Car ran smooth and was pretty loaded with feature, best perks were the BT function and Satellite radio, at no additional charge. Upon returning the vehicle, the checkout was less than 5 minutes and the shuttle bus was pulling in. That took 1 minute to leave and about 10 minutes, with traffic to get to my airline. Overall will definitely rent from them again if possible as my experience was a great one. No complains here at all. Service was smooth and fast, cars were cleaned and well maintained, and it was seemed seamless based on my experience. read more

But when I drove off I noticed it was only 1/4 so I took a picture. When I called the horrible and unconcerned customer service I was blamed, accused, and belittled. They charged my credit card $106 for fuel! If I didn't have the photo I they would have ripped me off the $106. I have given this enough of my energy. Virtually everyone treated us as is they were doing us a favor by renting us a car. When we dropped the car off on 7/17, the staff person was very curt and seemed annoyed with us. As we boarded the shuttle to go to O'Hare, the driver did not help with loading the bags. My wife had injured her back and was clearly struggling. To top it off, the shuttle driver dropped us off at baggage claim. Seriously? As I read other reviews, I see apology after apology from "management," yet nothing seems to have improved. Pick up process was quick. When I turned the car on, it immediately said it needed washer fluid. I got in an accident and had to call customer service multiple times to get different representatives until I finally got someone with a brain. I was 200 miles away from the Des Plaines/O'Hare location, I had to pay $400+ to get the car towed 200 miles back to them (TG for AAA). No other options, and they couldn't figure out how to get a replacement car to me without another 200-mile tow at my expense. Overall, if you are staying in the Chicago area, I'd recommend this place. If you're actually driving somewhere (which duh why else would you rent a car) - go to one of the more common companies that will be able to support you if an issue arises. +2 stars for reps in Des Plaines and clean, functional car -3 stars for reps on the phone and for not supporting customers more than a few miles away read more

However, once I got there, the total price ended up being OVER $200 more than the price I was expecting to pay coming in. Absolute do not rent from them. They are the very definition of a shady business. After paying for my car rental back at the beginning of April, they added on extra fees to my credit card after I returned the car. I was not pleased but I paid it. The fees were hidden in the contract. Fine. My bad for not combing over the contract with a fine tooth comb. Flash forward to over 4 1/2 months later and I found another new $53 dollar fee charged to my credit card from this place. I absolutely did not authorize this and I have not done any business with them for over 4 1/2 months! Stay far far away! It looks like a good deal initially but you'll end up getting a lot of extra unauthorized charges billed to your credit card afterwards. Last week I rent a car, and drive to MA and NY state, I want to buy the Toll pass program from desk, however the clerk told me their toll pass only can be used in IL, if you drive out IL , the toll pass can't be used. So I gave up buy this service, and drive thru the manual toll lane as possible as I can. however, In NY and MA state, all lanes are electrical toll pass system. Yesterday I want to pay my toll fee by plate, but MA only accept the car owner to do that, when I discussed this situation with Advantage customer service, she told me I must pay $ 25 /Day admin fee for that... So If you just want to drive in IL, it is no problem, otherwise, you will be charged much more admin fee, $25/day...and the problem is come from Advantage's Toll PASS CAN"T BE USED OUT OF Illinois read more

"Take Advantage Of Your Customers Who Just Want to Rent A Car", is what this place should be called. I waited at the airport for over 30 minutes without seeing a single Advantage shuttle. I ended up using a taxi. There goes groceries for a week. When I checked in, the guy said it would be cheaper to get a different car. A different car...but cheaper! Why, I could make back the money I lost on the taxi, I could buy groceries again! If you're thinking this is too good to be true, it's because it is. The vehicle wasn't bad, the return process; strange but fairly simple. The problem was, this was NOT a cheaper car. They completely mislead me into believing so. I have these additional charges and upgrade charges, and I've called their customer service several times asking for credit back, and all they tell me is that I should have looked over the agreement closer before signing. Well, I would have if I didn't have to wait for santa to grow his beard back before a shuttle arrived. I've never once complained to a customer service rep until today, and what a waste of time it was talking to three different reps. I accomplished nothing and feel dead inside. I would not have willingly payed for these upgrades. Well, lesson learned I suppose. I like to think positive. The people who work here are very nice and super helpful, but the service overall is so slow!! Upon arrival at the airport, I saw an Advantage shuttle leaving the pickup area and figured it was ok because another one was sure to follow. I waited as multiple shuttles for hertz, enterprise, and even budget drove by multiple times. I began to wonder if the Advantage shuttle would ever reappear. Thankfully, after about 30 minutes of waiting (and moving several times because of all the smokers everywhere), the shuttle arrived. Of course, once we loaded into the shuttle and left, the driver got a call informing him that he'd missed someone...At least we didn't have to go back for that person. I just wanted to get my car and start exploring the city!! There were two ladies working the counter when I arrived with two customers ahead of me. I think I waited in line for about 30 minutes before I finally approached the counter! I had reserved a compact-sized car and was, of course, expecting a compact-sized car. All they had left, though, were minivans...why on earth would you allow someone to reserve a car that wasn't actually going to be reserved for them?? Not wanting to wait for someone to return a smaller car, I ended up taking one of their multiple minivans in the lot. Upon returning the car, I had forgotten to fill the tank back up. The guy checking in the car was nice enough to let me drive back down the street to fill up the little gas that I had used - about $12 worth, compared to the $40-some I'd have to pay for not filling up. Let me make it easy for anyone who has trouble finding the shuttle: I bet you're sitting at the O' Hare rental car shuttle wondering why the little blue shuttle that says Advantage isn't coming by yet the Enterprise shuttle has passed by three times? Well, you probably pulled this Yelp review up because you're wondering if you should have rented from this place and wondering where the shuttle is. Am I right? Well, in case you didn't read the email confirmation telling you the pick-up is not at the airport but ACROSS the Hilton, let me clue you in on that now. Walk to the bus depot across the street from where you're sitting now and wait for the Advantage shuttle at Door 1. They're usually waiting for you if you give them your flight information so that's kind of a personal touch I find endearing. The shuttle driver will direct you to local sights and give you tips if you need it (but the prices at this place are so low, locals would rather use it than renting a Zipcar.) And it's probably a 10 minute shuttle ride so sit back and relax 'cause there's a reason you're getting a car during the weekday for only $18. Yes, you read that correctly-only $18! We pulled up, got greeted by an uber friendly agent at the desk who gave us a nice upgrade. We were given a Mitsubishi Gallant which was more than necessary for the two of us considering we had no luggage. While we were waiting for windows to defrost, the shuttle driver pulled up again, and gave us his window scraper after seeing that we were still sitting in the spot. They also offer a convenient toll service that allows you to get in the I-Pass lane for a nominal $2.95 per day. It definitely saved us time during rush hour and I consider it money well spent. And on a side note, I'm still laughing at this Roxy I. chick for not listening to directions or reading her confirmation email. Poor schmuck. read more

I made a reservation a week in advance for my Chicago trip. The Prices are hard to beat compared to the other/bigger Car Rentals. Upon my arrival to O'Hare, I watched countless shuttles to other Car Rentals wizz by as I waited, and waited, and waited for an Advantage shuttle to arrive. The shutlle driver saw me flag him down and he pulled over. He then leaped out the shuttle to announce; 'We DO NOT HAVE ANY CARS AVAILABLE.....(then went on to say).....if you have a reservation, unless you've already pre-paid for it, we cannot help you. I suggest going to Alamo or National'. I told the driver I have a reservation, but it isn't pre paid. He said he could not help me. So I did just that, I went over to Alamo. I paid only $30 more for a bigger car and that was fine. After reading other website and yelp complaints about them, I was lucky I didn't with them, and I never well. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM! The shuttle bus driver was GREAT! The bus was dirty and smelled bad. I got to the office and everyone was sitting doing nothing the manager too sitting doing nothing. GO CLEAR THE SHUTTLE BUS. I live in Chicago and needed to rent a car because I don't have one and need to do things in the burbs. They said I needed to have my own car liability insurance, IF I HAD MY OWN LIABILITY INSURANCE I WOULD HAVE A CAR AND I WOULDN'T NEEDED TO RENT ONE!! Very disappointed. We waited 45 minutes for a shuttle and when we tried to call for help, no one answered our calls. A very unfriendly woman named Cassandra assigned us a car. Upon sitting in it, we smelt vomit immediately and looked around to find it in the back seat and all over the seat belt. She exchanged us for another car and when inquiring to see about a discount we had for our poor experience, she said, "discount for what?" Will not rent from advantage again. read more

I used Expedia to book my trip to Chicago which is how I found Advantage. They had the best deal so I went with them. Upon arrival to the airport there are no signs directing you to the Advantage shuttle. We found it very difficult to get correct info at the airport. I called the number to advantage and found the correct place. Once we figured out where to go, just to where every other rental car company shuttles pick up passengers, we didn't wait long for our shuttle. (Advantage comes every 15 minureWe were told to go to the bus shuttle area, but that was incorrect. Our shuttle driver was extremely friendly. We were very appreciative of him and his knowledge of the area. Now the actual office was dirty. All of the other customers inside were upset, which made us nervous. The girl at the counter was being very rude to the gentleman in front of us and not helpful at all. When she helped us she was not friendly and gave us little guidance. Sign this and that with no mention or what the heck we were signing. Our car was a very nice Toyota Camry. No complaints about the car. We had zero issues with it at all. Returning the car, customer service was about the same. However again our shuttle driver was great. Be prepared that this place is about ten minutes from O'hare. Shuttles run about every 15 minutes. I would plan on giving yourself thirty minutes to return the car and get to the airport at least. read more

Let me say this, You pick a place like Advantage Rent a Car for a reason, pure low price. There is no frills, low customer service, farther shuttle rides, nothing fancy. You receive a car for a dirt cheap price. And in that aspect that succeed! At first I was bummed about the customer service then I thought, hey I paying $25 a day for a midsize car. Ok, i can handle this. They do have a shuttle at O'Hare, it's blue and white and picks up in a different area vs the other rental car companies. There is always O'Hare staff outside that will direct you to the proper waiting area. It was all very simple, and not a single problem with anything. Thanks Adavantage! $50 per day on Expedia. Small car. Rented for 3 days (and 2 hours) Total when I dropped off the car $496.07. They refunded $100 of the $200 deposit that was taken at the time of pickup. So the total for this three day rental was $394.77. I had refueled before I got there so gas wasn't part of the fees. Or tolls. When I asked why it was so high they said, "Airport fees". read more
