It's fair to say the neighborhood is, "in transition", but the blocks around this restaurant are lovely. Every shop is a small business owner, with none of the chain stores that plague downtown. We were seated immediately. The restaurant does breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and has a nice list of wines and coffees. Our waiter was very friendly and professional. The French press coffee was spectacular, and the Chantilly cream I ordered as a side was spritzed into my coffee cup with every refill. (I always say, "yes" to schlag Sahne!) The menu has about 12 choices of gallettes (savory) and 12 choices of crepes (sweet). Both are thin buckwheat pancakes with extensive, yummy fillings. It was hard to choose just one! I opted for the galette Thalassa, which is filled with a mesclun salad, cherry tomato halves, mandolined radish and cucumber and red onion strings, covered with lox, capers, a dab of sour cream and a teaspoon of black caviar. It was a feast! My husband had the galette Savoyard, with a scrambled egg and prosciutto. I can tell he liked it by his silence after it was put in front of him! My spouse had the hanger steak with eggs benedict sitting on a bed of fries and an arugula salad with dressing next to it, and a wonderful sauce with mushrooms and little pearl onions on the steak. My wife had eggs scrambled, and my son and I had them poached. They were perfectly poached - it looks like they have a machine for poaching, since they come out in a perfect cup shape. They are well cooked, with just the right amount of liquid yolk that I like. Here's the problem - it costs extra to get eggs poached. 2 eggs, sausage or bacon, toast and homefries is about $6, but if you want them poached, it's $7 and there are no homefries - have to pay another $1 or $1.50 extra for that. Want Rye toast? That's more money too. When I ordered my food, my poached eggs came on top of my rye toast - making the toast soggy. Look, I know some people might just be making their own egg on toast sandwich, but that can't be most people. Leave the eggs on the side (There was plenty of room on the plate) and let people put it on the bread if that's what they want. The service was great, and the food itself was decent - pretty good, actually. But the upcharges make this place not one I'll visit again.
