For the most part, I don't try new restaurants unless they have at least 4 stars on Yelp. But I'm glad I tried this place, even though their current rating falls a little short of my preferences. Our server was very helpful in helping us pick our selections. We had a great selection of small plate's including the Kakuni Pork Bun, Softshell Crab Bun, Crispy Egg, Ikageso Karaage, and Agedashi Tofu. We also had the Spicy Karaage Don. All were delightful! A trendy fun Asian spot serving up delicious ramen! The Beaverton location is really cute and the ambiance is really nice. The servers and staff are so sweet as well. I love that this Japanese spot has vegetarian options too! I got the Hazelnut Tantanmen and it is probably my favorite veggie ramen ever -- the broth is so creamy and the noodles are perfect too! OMG I love having Afuri in Beaverton!!! Easy parking, plenty of outdoor seating! Amazing Ramen in a relaxed yet trendy atmosphere. We sat outside on the main upper patio, which has heated overhead lamps, (subtle and warm) The piped in music was trendy, and not too loud so that we could have a pleasant conversation. BTW Afuri on the East side of Portland, the music is so loud, we had to yell at each other to have a conversation at out table (won't go there again) I had the new ramen with clams. It was so amazing... I think it's a mix of fish and chicken broth. The ramen noodles were cooked to perfection... a delight with every bite. My son had the Yuzu Shio Ramen. The egg was perfect, and he's wanting to add this location to our Yelp Beaverton Collection. I've always loved the Yuzu Limeade at the downtown Afuri. In Beaverton, there was so much ice that it was way above the liquid, and impossible to drink. I had to fish the ice out of the glass in order to drink it. I would gladly drive 3-hours from Seattle to Portland to eat at Afuri again. I got here around 4:00pm on a Sunday, and I was quickly seated. I'm not a beverage-y person, but I am so glad I ordered the shishito soda. It was light, citrusy, and very refreshing. The perfect drink for the summer! I wish I could try all the non-alcoholic drinks on their menu. For appetizers, I recommend the tori karaage. It was coated in yuzu infused batter, which gave a burst of aromatic freshness to each bite. It paired perfectly with the lemon juice and the relish sauce. Onto the ramen. The vegan hazel tantanmen tasted like all the other vegan ramens I've tried. Nothing too special. I wouldn't necessarily say that it had a hazelnutty taste...It was more of a cashew-based broth. I was not disappointed though. As for the yuzu shio ramen, it was a solid 10/10. The broths and the different noodle textures were filling and very delicious. I already can't wait to be back! When we got there, there were tables ready but we were told to wait since nothing was available yet. Upon arriving after our phone call that our table was ready, we still were waiting on a host to seat us. The seating is very close with the people at the table next to us being about an arms length away. The servers were very friendly which helped bring up the atmosphere. Onto the food. We got the tonkatsu tantanmen, king salmon, medium fatty tuna, unagidon, kaarage, and fresh wasabi. Tonkatsu tantanmen: the broth was hearty and flavorful and was a decent portion. The eggs were alittle overdone but still had a good soy flavor. They use ground up pork here which is a shame because with a normal slice it would've been pretty good. Kaarage: honestly was cooked pretty well but lacked any seasoning or flavor on its own like we were use to. When coupled with the sauce, it definitely helped but not quite the full package. Nigiri: the king salmon was a slightly larger portion than your typical conveyor belt sushi and definitely felt a bit fresher. The medium fatty tuna was good too but neither blew my mind. The fresh wasabi for $5 didn't seem worth it but This was the first time I've had fresh wasabi. Unagi-don. Honestly the rice in this and the sushi was strange. Didn't hold up at all so it just crumbled when picking up with chopsticks. It was difficult to get a decent bite without having to bring the bowl up to my mouth. The unagi was very small in size and portion. It also didn't have any unagi sauce over it so the whole dish was just lacking. The cucumbers it came with weren't pickled or anything, just thinly sliced cucumbers. For $23, it definitely felt like a ripoff. TLDR: Honestly, don't come here for anything else but the ramen. I ordered the chef's nigiri & my friend ordered the Yuzu shoyu ramen. OMG it was over 100 degrees in Beaverton today so we did not want to create anymore heat by cooking in the house (AKA we don't have a/c). We were in the mood for cold noodles but noticed that most of the places in town were take out only right now. We stumbled upon Afuri, which had a shaded patio area for dining in (social distancing style), so we decided to give it a try. The first good sign was that there were many Japanese diners there. We ordered at their makeshift front desk and got a draft beer, a watermelon mock tail, cold noodles with Yuzu sauce, pork tantanmen, and some fried gyoza. They served the drinks and gyoza fast. The drinks were good to beat the heat outside and the gyoza was crunchily delicious. I don't know how they made it so crunchy, but they are doing something right. Soon enough, the noodles came. I was worried that the sauce would be too salty so I carefully added it to my cold noodles. But to my surprise, it was really great and the yuzu was perfect for a summer day. My only complaint is that the egg was not fully cooked. (Part of my egg white was still liquidy). My boyfriend seemed confused about his noodles. He told me that it wasn't what he expected. The combo of the Japanese minced pork broth and the Chinese tan tan mien confused his palatial. He thought it was ok, but not great. Afuri is kind of a fusion place, so be prepared for that. I needed to gain back my appetite and the nasu don did it for me! The fried crispy eggplant with scallions and red ginger over rice, was not a huge portion which I loved! My daughter was the driving force behind our decision to try Afuri. She has Japanese heritage, loves ramen and dumplings, and was so excited for a fancy night out. However, she has severe food allergies. There were very few menu items that were safe, the one that was recommended stated "spicy" in the description - when I asked about the spice level before ordering it, we were told it was not. Even my spice loving husband said it was spicy. My daughter couldn't eat it. When we asked about safe noodles in a broth she could eat, they refused to do any substitutions. It's soup. I don't know what their basis for a blanket refusal is, but to offer no safe options and refuse to substitute is really exclusionary for people with dietary needs. We came here for dinner on a weekend, and just a word of warning, the restaurant itself isn't very big and it was very busy. We ended up waiting about an hour. If you're here with just 1 other person, you can grab a seat at the bar and the wait for that is much better. There's also outdoor seating but it was too cold and rainy that night so that added to the long wait since everyone wanted to be inside. We ended up getting the shishito peppers and karaage as appetizers. For ramen, we got the tonkotsu tantanmen and the shoyu. Unfortunately, I felt like the food didn't live up to the hype. It was just ok and I feel like there are better options at a lower price and with less wait. There's a lot of street parking around, just check the hours to make sure it's free parking while you're there. Being Japanese, I can say the food was good but it wasn't all the way authentic Japanese food. The best things were the skewers (you can taste the smokiness from the grill) and the Bincho roll (was very light and easy to eat). AMBIANCE: Love how open the inside of the restaurant feels and it also has a cute little patio area which is great for when the weather is nice. The area around the restaurant is also very cute and there's a lot more restaurants and things to do. SERVICE/PRICE: We sat at the bar and the service was mid. Finally stopped into AFURI for indoor dining. The service was very busy and waiter was slow to take an order. Food portions are still small compared to other places. Chasu, egg and other toppings are available à la carte. The taste is much better when dining in. Door dash quality just isn't that great. Nice balance on the broth with some thin noodles. This was very surprising because they only had one waitress and she was definitely earning her keep. Really sweet blonde gal, with friendly demeanor and comforting vibe. My BF and I ordered the Don Kaarage, soft shell crab bun, pork bun, hot saki, and coconut milk tea for approx $60 before tip. All of it was very good. We were very disheartened that Afuri no longer serves Sushi at this location. Which was the reason we came, but to be fair we should have noticed the name has changed. So that's our bad. Though, the waitress informed us that the SE location still offers sushi. It's downtown Beaverton so parking is typical for a down town situation. Afuri is one of the authentic Japanese restaurants. However, its nigiri is so small. With 30+ year of enjoying sushi in a few countries including Japan, I have never seem such a small one. Afuri had better raise the price and serve a regular size if cost is concerned. As a franchise from Japan, it is shameful to prioritize something over quality and authenticity. Tsukemen is full with citrusy and spiky taste in a positive way. It is the reason I visit Afuri. It may be exotic at first, but you will find yourself visit this place for it. Pretty underwhelming experience overall. My party of 4 was there right when they opened on a Sunday at 11:30am. Second party to be seated. Service was frustrating throughout the whole time. I typically have patience, so it was disappointing seeing the place get packed and other parties were getting their food before us. It did not make sense for us to get our food 45-60 minutes after we were seated/arrived. The wait yes was an issue and I can understand staffing issues (and I also think that's why sushi was unavailable that afternoon), but it didn't make sense when parties were getting their appetizers and ramen before we did. I wanted to like this ramen so badly but it made me feel sooo sick after eating it. When the ramen got cold, which i picked it up like warm, the broth solidifies. I heated it back up and ate it but because of how much fat was in the ramen and broth, I literally felt so sick after eating. Decided to try Afuri again and it did hit the spot. Hostess was definitely friendly and was able to seat us immediately- still was not thrilled for the limited social distancing on seating..... For Beaverton Restaurant Week they had featured a shrimp ramyen bowl, but did not honor the 10% discount. Server was friendly and our orders were taken, but had a mishap where she stated our order would not come with a egg, and the 'egg' in the description is indicating that it's egg noodle. So, I ordered a half of a egg ( cold and $1) Otherwise, this time I was pleased to see that when we ordered the bottle of sake she confirmed the ounce to clarify the set price. Vegan dumplings were very delicious and the kinchi hit the spot. My friend's vegetable roll seemed to be in a better shape and fill than last time and the Ramen we ordered was a Yuzu and it was okay. The broth has a bit more to be desired (nice subtle Yuzu, but not quite the flavorful and hearty broth) toppings were definitely better than the Hazelnut ramen. Overall, my review stands, but decided to raise a star. Not bad, but not great. My first time trying the Beaverton location. Ordered the Tonkotsu Tantanmen, Miso-cashew gyoza and negima (grilled chicken thigh). Tonokotsu ramen is spicy but not overwhelming. The broth is not super thick, what I call the typical meat heavy broth. I liked the broth and enjoyed the veggies. I found noodles some what overcooked and soft. Somewhat similar to buckwheat noodle (soba) texture. Miso cashew gyoza was something I never had before. It was ok but I still prefer ones with meat. Might be a good option for vegetarian. They offer items are not available elsewhere, like the flounder and the Sea bream sashimi. Our Christmas Eve lunch also included ramen, thankfully as it helped warm us. A great selection of ramen of different styles. Just excellent! We could not pass up the the desert. Just extraordinary. Service was spot on for our quirkiness. Although adjusted a bit from the original concept (no more sushi, for example), this is always a beautiful experience. Some might perceive it as fine dining but they have expressed they wanted to make it a little faster and casual. You will spend $20-25 PP after a beverage and maybe a dessert or izakaya selection. Service is somewhat standoffish but always present to lend a hand. One of the ways the restaurant changed was to place prewrapped bamboo chopsticks sets at tables along with menus and overabundant paper napkins. The cocktails and mocktails here are fun and worth a look over. I don't drink sake so I don't know if this selection is average or a standout special list. I like the traditional karaage and wish I knew their egg salad recipe! The "spicy" version feels more like a Panda Express orange chicken - still tasty but felt a little out of place. We ordered Karaage and Tonkotsu ramen; the ramen was good but the Karaage was very dry. The Karaage definitely needed to be a better grade of meat or something as it was just super dry. The sauce was a nice touch but nothing mind blowing. The ramen was very good however. The ramen eggs were also pretty good.
