I was introduced to Agave at a Yelp! Elite event. Since I was in the neighborhood I decided to stop in for a late lunch. First impressions of the space let you know you are in a Mexican Restaurant without hitting you over the head. If you told me this was a Southwestern American Restaurant, I would believe you based on the decor. Overall a very pleasant eating environment. Service is what I expected after having met the family. Very friendly and attentive. There is a sweetness, and genuine care about the customers you just can't fake. My water glass was never empty. Food looks like what you get at other Mexican restaurants, but the taste is so much better. I got the Del Mar Enchiladas and they were overflowing with seafood, no fillers here. The rice often feels like an after thought, but here it was perfectly cooked with actual flavor. Agave is definitely worth driving past the other dozen Mexican restaurants. read more

As a Mexican food fanatic, I eat a LOT of Mexican food. We stopped in for lunch because I have always wanted to try it here. Service was good, chips and salsa (not bad) but let me tell you about the nachos.... don't waste your time. I ordered the grilled chicken nachos and I got chips, fajita mix (green peppers, onions and Tomatoes), a cheese sauce and plain grilled chicken. No seasoning. It was the most bland and uneventful nachos I have ever had. We were just starting there with an app but at that point we're afraid to spend anymore time and money before being disappointed. My husband and I love our date nights at Agave. The Agave margarita is what I'm looking for in a marg--limey and not overly sweet. The queso dip is really good; the large bowl is huge! Last time I visited, I got Arroz con Pollo. It was just the right amount of chicken, cheese, rice and beans on the side. I do have to say that I'm not the biggest fan of the tacos. They were a bit dry the last time I ordered them. The building isn't huge, so seating can be limited. The patio is perfect during the summertime, but again, not very big. You'll probably find yourself with a short wait. I'd suggest going during off times. The servers are very kind and patient for indecisive orderers like me. Have been wanting to stop in since the Yelp event I met some of the family at and finally did for lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty early so there was only one other table when we got there. We were quickly greeted by the hostess/server and provided menus. They serve breakfast all day! This made my husband happy as he loves huevos rancheros. I opted for enchiladas suizas along with the small Don Julio margarita. Chips and salsa were brought to the table and the salsa had a slight smoky taste, which I enjoyed. My dish came with four enchiladas stuffed with chicken and a beautiful tomatillo sauce and queso covering them. A large dollop of sour cream was placed in the middle. If being picky, the sour cream could have been drizzled across all four, but that's just for a better visual! We loved our food and our service was great! Can't wait to go back! read more

My husband and I really like this place and come every so often. We tend to visit more in the summer when we can sit outside. What is funny to me, is the reason I like it may be the reason why other people are complaining. I can't handle a lot of grease and this is the least greasy mexican food I have found. It tastes healthy. You're far less likely to leave with reflux etc. depending on what you order. I also usually customize what I order. Lately I've been loving the shrimp bowl and I get it without cheese or sour cream. Then I usually have 2 more meals worth of rice and beans from that. Prior to that I was into the chicken meals that come with rice/beans. Are the prices a bit higher than other mexican restaurants, sure. But it depends on what you are looking for. If you want to eat something a little more healthy, you may have more luck here. read more

The food here is fine, although if you're looking for authentic Mexican food, you'd be sadly disappointed by Agave. I got the Agave Enchiladas, which were just "meh." I would not get them again. They were basically just corn tortillas rolled around some chewy beef, covered with green sauce. Which, like, that sounds like an enchilada, right? But there was something missing from these. Also, they were uncomfortably spicy, and the meal came with three of them, so it was three times the spicy meh-ness. I also ordered sangria, and that, too, was nothing special. It tasted like it came from a can. This was probably my fault -- I mean, sangria is Spanish, not Mexican, so why did I order it at a Mexican restaurant thinking it was going to be good? That was dumb. The service was shoddy -- we didn't see our server the entire time, then at the end, he kept trying to take my plate as I was clearly still eating from it! This happened twice. My dining partner got the fajitas and enjoyed them, but said the rice and beans were just OK. Also, the guacamole was kind of slimy, like it wasn't freshly made. (You know, the more I reflect on the meal, the more I want to change my rating to two stars! We'll say it was two-and-a-half stars.) The chips and salsa were really good, though. read more

Always excited to try something new but unfortunately was quickly disappointed. The service and food were both lacking. The server had a difficult time understanding us and us understanding her. This is nothing new for Americans we smile and ask them to kindly repeat themselves and we figure it out. But you could tell she was clearly irritated with us not understanding her. We made the most of it and ordered flautas appetizer with a side of beans and 3 carne asada street tacos with a side of beans. The chips and salsa arrived and the ice tea and waters followed right behind. The salsa had giant chunks of whole stewed tomatoes as if they hadn't quite finished blending the salsa. We tried to peer at other tables to see what their salsa looked like but no one was close enough to see. We did our best to move the chunks out of the way and dip around them. I had fully intended on asking the server for a different salsa when she returned. But she never did before the meal came. Our drink glasses were all empty by this point. When she set the food down she asked if there was anything else she could get us. I said yes, water, ice tea, salsa, chips... She brought the second salsa and again had giant chunks of stewed tomatoes. The salsa had little flavor and barely any cilantro or onion. It definitely needed salt. The flautas, a huge favorite of mine, was oily. When I cut into the shell the grease would ooze out. Clearly the oil was not hot enough when they were cooked. The meat inside was also incredibly dry. The pico was old and had no life or crispy crunch to it that you'd normally expect. Water had filled my plate from the overly wet lettuce. It was a very sad disappointing plate. The side of beans was the consistency of soup and was served in a round bowl, again it needed salt. The tacos had no seasoning to the meat, it was just cold angry grey meat on a taco with some cilantro and onion, again with a lack of the salt/seasoning. The best things we enjoyed were the ice tea and the guacamole. Also sometime after the food had arrived I unraveled my cloth napkin and there was dried food in few places on it. I was ready to get up and leave the table at this point. I've never not wanted to pay for a plate of food in my life. I was truly disappointed. The server never materialized and I had to go find her myself for my check. I smiled big and politely requested the check. She was busy eating her lunch at the back of the dinning area. She of course didn't understand me. Her coworker spoke up and said. "He's requesting his check". To which she said she'd be right out. She brought the check and passed it off like in a football game not stopping to hand it to me and just kept on walking. I'm sure they were just having a terrible day but you can see how all these little things can really add up to a terrible experience. What we did sample really lacked authentic Mexican flavors you're expecting to taste. I don't know that it warrants consideration for a return visit or not. read more

This place has everything going for it but the horrible service, mediocre food and high prices are going to put it out of business before it ever has a chance. We had fajitas, a burrito, a beer, a margarita, and ceviche and it totaled $50. Pretty expensive for good Mexican food but really expensive for overcooked, bland meat. We had to ask someone to wait on us twice after waiting for 20 minutes. They never brought us water and I had to get a high-chair myself from upstairs. And they never asked if we wanted another round of drinks, the one thing they actually did well. I get that new places have to work out the kinks but not even making eye contact with your table to let them know you'll be with them or that you see them is ridiculous. Don't make me ask you to wait on me. We have a toddler so when we go out to eat it can be a bit challenging to keep her attention so waiting and waiting for service is not really conducive to a relaxing meal. I don't know if this is just me being ill educated, but I also don't think that matters at the end of the day as it should have been clarified while ordering!.. I have to spread the word, especially with so many people being laid off, like myself. I've been trying to be as responsible as possible cooking, but treated myself to Agave take out in Carmel the other day. Two margaritas, two orders of chicken nachos and the price was not quoted before hanging up; which isn't incredibly unusual however I thought immediately that I should've made sure to know the total before hanging up. I arrive and pay- SURPRISE.. $70! I was completely confused and it was THEN explained to me, after I had given my card and it had been charged, that I was *required* to order a "pitcher," when ordering "a" margarita. Being an avid Mexican food eater before all of this, I handed my card over not thinking anything of it. Lesson learned! They were most certainly *not* pitcher sized (maybe two per "pitcher") I had already been charged and love this spot/server I always end up with. Needless to say, regardless of whether or not it's been advertised even once, I feel very mislead. I don't recommend getting carry out from people who won't be straightforward about pricing/limit expectations during a time like this. read more

Not anything like the typical Mexican places around Carmel. This one is a better quality of food. The service was very good and the Patron Margarita was excellent. I really like this place. Especially when it is nice and you can get a table outside. Although, the decor inside is pretty good especially when they have the upstairs part open and you can go gaze at the giant glass sculpture hanging up there. A few months ago they introduced a special burrito called the Bandera Burrito. It has since been added to the regular menu. I love this burrito! It has everything in it, steak, chicken, shrimp, churrizo... Then it is topped with 3 sauces (red sauce, verde sauce and a white cheese sauce) to look like a mexican flag, so the presentation is as nice as the flavor of the burrito. Since I had this, it is the only thing I have ordered, so I can't speak to much else on the menu, but I can say if you have this burrito you will not be disappointed! read more

This place is a hidden gem in a beautiful part of Carmel. It's beautifully decorated, clean, and the staff is awesome! When we were seated the server immediately greeted us, took our drink orders and gave us chips. Our food was brought out immediately and our sever came back several times to ensure that we had what we needed. I absolutely love the service that we received. In regards to the food the portions were very large for the price that we paid for our meals. To me it tasted like authentic Mexican food and with such a variety of items to choose from one would have to go back several times as its hard to pick just one item! The food was so awesome that I didn't want to take anyone, I finished it there! The drink specials were awesome and the margaritas were awesome as well. I ordered takeout with a friend for lunch last week. It was amazing! Mexican food can be a big hit or miss when taking out, but this was great. Everything was exactly how we ordered. Both of us ordered chicken chimichangas and let me just say, they were chimichangYAS (sorry couldn't resist - they were so good). We also had a large queso which was bomb too. My brother and I wanted to take my mom out for dinner for her bday. She lives on the Monon and it being so nice out we wanted to walk. Mom chose Agave. We sat outside and was instantly greeted with chips and salsa. Awesome salsa by the way! Super cilantro flavor. After about 8-10 mins without a server greet, I started to get annoyed. They were not that busy and being in the serving industry myself I didn't understand why we had to wait so long. Finally we were able to get service and it was above average. Food came out quick and drinks were tasty. They have huge tacos filled with fresh toppings. This place would be a great on a nice evening due to their patio off Main Street. read more

I had my first experience at Agave Bar last night for dinner. I was very impressed, to put it succinctly. The salsa doesn't stand out from most other Mexican restaurants but it's very good, nonetheless. We also ordered queso dip, which was very good but fairly standard. My Enchiladas Suizas were delicious; chicken and beef enchiladas topped with an amazing salsa verde, queso, and sour cream. The meat was tender and cooked perfectly. The atmosphere at Agave Bar was very nice. Incredibly clean with a modern, chic interior. The patio is comfortable and complements the tone inside. For inexpensive Mexican food, I would absolutely recommend Agave Bar and will be returning soon, myself. read more

I like this place so don't let the 3 stars discourage you. We ate here on a weeknight with a friend from out of town and we were the only people in the restaurant when we walked in. We wanted to sit outside but storms were threatening so we opted for inside. Their margarita menu is huge! Two of us chose the Black Margarita made with Hornitos Tequila and one of chose the skinny marg. They were both great but I will order the skinny marg next time because it was less sweet. The three of us wanted street tacos so we ordered different versions and shared but I don't understand why they don't have this option on the menu. Let me pick 3 different fillings please! Shrimp, steak and carnitas tacos were all very nice. The ambiance is quite good too. Next time I want to sit outside and enjoy the Carmel sidewalk. read more

I generally enjoy this place. Please read this entire review for the happy ending...Recently a group of 10 of us were going out for a special occasion and we asked if we can sit in the upstairs bar area which is better for a large group gathering. The 1st person we spoke to said no problem. Once the group plans were finalized, we called back to confirm the party of 10 for the upstairs bar and were told No. "depending on the weather, we want you on the outside patio". We want you??? The customer wants to be inside upstairs regardless of the weather. The Agave person on the phone would not consent even knowing that we now need to contact all 5 couples to find another place. The OWNER got back with us ASAP after this debacle and confirmed that they would happily accommodate our request. We ended up having an outstanding time - very good food - and our only snafu was with the splitting of the checks which was eventually resolved. I love agave! I come here probably once a week for lunch, and do dinner occasionally (either dinner in or carry out). Food: this is definitely my favorite Mexican food around. My favorites include the pollo a la crema, agave burrito, and the deep fried burritos. My friends swear by the steak fajitas, bean burritos with cheese sauce, and the arroz con pollo. The salsa is just the way I like it: chunks of onion and cilantro. Sometimes it's a little spicy for me, but always good. Parking: I never struggle with the parking behind the building - there's a little public lot, and a good section of street parking next to said lot. Time: As I mentioned before, I come here for lunch once a week, and the drive time is usually about 12 minutes each way, and with that we usually get back to the office right on time (hour long lunch) so I'd say the time is just what you'd expect to order, eat and pay. Service: now, I will say that if you'd ask me a couple of months ago about service, I'd say that the servers were very nice, but there was usually just one server working, so it was a bit slower. Obviously I wouldn't hold that against the server, but I'm glad that management has hired more servers! I've also reached my lifelong goal of being known at a restaurant! Each week, one of the servers (I believe her name is Cynthia - she always has great eyeshadow going on, tell her hi!) will always check in with us and ask how we've been, etc if we're not in her section. It's nice and definitely encourages us to continue our weekly trip to the restaurant. And if it helps, I brought my mom here for dinner once and she said it was the best Mexican food she's ever had. I had dinner here last night with a friend; we wanted to try out a place we hadn't been before in the Carmel Arts District, and so opted to give Agave a try. We were not disappointed! We were greeted by a very friendly hostess, and our drink order was taken promptly. The "medium" margaritas may seem a little pricey, but are large enough to last through chips, dinner and even a bit of after dinner imbibing. I had the Agave margarita and it was great! The chips were fresh, tasty, and plentiful and the salsa was also clearly freshly made and tasty. Since this was my first visit here, I went classic with the tacos de carne asada. They were delicious! I had the black beans instead of refried as my side; just as an FYI, these are served in broth in a bowl. I wasn't expecting a soup like side, but it was quite good! Portion sizes are what I consider appropriate and reasonable, but those with larger appetites might consider small. Prices are very reasonable though so those with larger appetites could easily add on some other items. Service was wonderful! Attentive without being intrusive. Food and drinks came out quickly, but we were not rushed. The atmosphere is bright, modern and not too loud. We will definitely be back to try more of the menu here! read more
