After cooking well myself and having gone to many NYC and European restaurants, I was excited to go to this one by the park today. I wanted chicken with lemon potatoes. I was famished. I had not eaten much for lunch and so ate everything, but the lemon chicken and potatoes were not as good or plentiful as those at a diner, Neptune diner. They both had a metallic aftertaste and the potatoes were too moist. I did ant one or two more pieces and the waitress said she'd give me another plate. No, I did not want that many or to pay for them. She said the "chef" said he could not do that. You'd think they'd want to please a first-time customer. I said that I would not come back. "Your epilogi" or choice, the waitress said. And since when is someone a chef when they stick a chicken and potatoes in the oven with water, olive oil, lemon juice and oregano, what I and yiayias can do. #wt* This is not exactly passing one semester of college chemistry, let alone a bachelor's degree in it. I believe I was told on the telephone the meal came with a side salad, which I did not receive. The chicken was "organic" and tiny at $20, while you would get a breast filet for $16. How do I know the chicken was organic? I never met it. And what does that mean in this case? The inorganic one is not made up of C-H-O bonds. We'd be in trouble. The Neptune Diner one, organic or not, is bigger, cheaper and comes with more potatoes and salad. In fact, the minute I walked in, the waiters, who seemed to be from Greece and/or want-to-be actors, were snooty. I will go back to Neptune Diner to get my chicken with lemon potatoes, and a side salad with better soft, sweet-smelling bread and great service next time. I suggest you do the same! read more

Astoria in general is known for great Greek food and Agnanti located parkside at Astoria Park is one of the three restaurants that don't disappoint. The offerings at Agnanti are rooted in faithfulness to the Asia-Minor recipes brought to Greece proper my Hellenistic refugees who were politely asked to leave their ancestral homelands by the Ottoman Turks. Politics aside, most of what folks think are Greek dishes are in fact spiced-down Middle-Eastern recipes. Here's a quick sampling: Mousaka, pastichio, any vegetable dish in light tomato sauce and olive oil, boureks (spinach, cheese, milk and other pie fillings wrapped in filo dough), yogurt, baklava, kataif, Greek coffee, etc. The Greeks however made these and other recipes their own. In fact, recently one Turkish fellow had to steal the recipe for Greek yogurt from the Greeks (as alleged by the ex-wife in divorce court) but I digress... It is around the time the remake of the song hit the airwaves that Agnanti in Astoria was born. The restaurant came on the traditional Greek restaurant scene and was immediately embraced by connoisseurs of "Greek" food. Homage to the recipes and culinary delights of the Levant and Izmir separated Agnanti from the pack. Sure they have the typical grilled fresh fish and lamb chops but they also have a plethora of boureks and many other dishes that prior to Agnanti required either a long-overdue and guilt laden visit to yia-yias or a visit to Çiya Sofrası in Kadikoy. Depending on my mood I either choose a bunch of mezzes (tapas) or the typical self-assembled three course meal of an appetizer, main dish and sides. The entire menu is my favorite so trying to recommend something to you is tantamount to trying to pick between Kim Novak and Marilyn Monroe in their hey-day. When you're done, save coffee and dessert for the small cafe located up the block from Agnanti operated by Faye, the co-proprietor of Agnanti (Maria her mom is the other proprietor). Make sure to make rezzies to Agnanti otherwise you'll be joining the masses on the corner of 19th Street and Ditmars salivating as each dish is brought right past you en route to those with the foresight to call ahead. read more

Not sure why this place has less than a 4-star rating! Growing up in Queens, i've definitely been spoiled as there are a ton of really great Greek restaurants. Agnanti definitely fits in. Upon entering, it feels like walking into someone's house for dinner - really cozy and welcoming. Black and white photos line the restaurant walls, and there is even a small screen in the back with a few black and white films playing. As for the food - so, so, so good. We got the dolmades, lemon potato, horta, grilled octopus for the appetizers/sides. I got the grilled salmon with rice+spinach as my main dish. Everything was absolutely delicious! I feel like it's hard to go wrong with salmon, but sometimes it's just "eh". Not the case here! All the food was super fresh and flavorful. Our table also got the lamb chops with fries and the liver and said those dishes were delicious! It was really easy to find parking here on a weekday and the location is also pretty awesome. One of my favorite places. It's beautiful and light-filled, the service is so quick, it feels really homey and cozy, and most importantly, the food is AMAZING. We went to Agnanti planning for a happy family dinner, the following were dissatisfied things that we encountered in our dining experience. A very crowded dining room, my elbow touched the next diner's elbow who sat in the adjacent parallel dining table. (Happened when I turned sided ways to talk as the next diner was resting his elbow on the chair) 1. Bread served was old, sliced wheat bread that you buy from the deli 2. The waiting staff collected plates and repeatedly passed within few inches over my wife forehead. A dangerous maneuver ( forks , spoon & sauce were on the plates) in a tight space. 3. Sauce was dripped accidentally on my daughter jean. The waiter pretended that he did not see it, we were frantic to clean off the oily drippings with the napkins. FOOD COMA. Wow, what a wonderful dining experience. This was probably one of the best meals I've had in Astoria. A Greek friend of mine recommended this restaurant and after a nice workout in Astoria Park a gal pal and I checked this place out. It wasn't very crowded for a Thursday evening but all of the outdoor tables were seated so we sat inside. We ordered a carafe of rose for $24 which equaled about 6 glasses of wine and started with the shrimp kataifi which is phenomenal. I ordered the swordfish kebabs that came with a side of the best rice I've ever tasted and my friend got the salmon. It was all so fresh and delicious. I feel like I was in Greece. We got a side of taziki as well and we all but licked the plate clean. Our waiter was so kind and after finding out it was our first time gave us free dessert! Oh my god. The Ravasaki was aaaaaaaamazing . Hands down our favorite dish. Sweet and savory. Everything about it was perfect down to the flavorful honey. I arrived a Sunday at 1pm , they had 14 tables empty outside, no host was at the door so I sat in a table of my preference, I meant to have lunch and work in my laptop 14" . After 5min the waitress arrived and said you can't be there if you are eating alone, and referred me to a table for 1 against a wall (which it was too small for me to be comfortable eating and working in the laptop) so I said I didn't fit in there, to please accommodate me in a larger one (didn't had to be a 4 seat) she said I don't have more tables available so I asked for the manager, another waitress came to me, snap at me, didn't listened at me just said how good the other waitress was, then the manager arrived told me I couldn't tell her what to do, I said how I was feeling uncomfortable and miss understood, as they were plenty open table and bigger tables. I only wanted to work and have lunch, she said she is been working there long enough and longer than me being young, I felt discriminated, i was well dressed and not been rude at all, she said to please leave, turned around and slap the door at my face, made me cry and feel super insecure, this is the first time someone treats me so bad and rudely, was very unfair and sad. read more

I agree with 3.5 average stars. The service is excellent. The atmosphere, especially on a cool summer day under a canopy, can't be beat. Now the food. The owner/manager was VERY rude and seem to have no regard for people's health. I tried to make a reservation 3 weeks ahead of an event. I was told to call the week of, so I did. Then when I told them the reservation I wanted to make & they said they weren't sure they could do multiple tables. I clearly explained that we had different people in from different states & needed separate tables because of COVID & the man told me he would talk to the owner & call me back if there were any problems. I never heard back so I checked in the day of the event. They told me they were all set & I didn't think to clarify again the number of tables. Then we showed up at the set time to be told that we only had 2 out of the 4 tables we requested. They expected us to sit together. I explained the situation again & they got the owner/manager. She was very upset & when I explained to her that I had requested 4 tables but would be ok with 3 & the reason why she told me 1) no one told her anything other than the number of people & 2)that she basically didn't care if people came from different states & that the COVID situation wasn't her problem & she needed to make a profit. If 4 different groups had showed up asking for tables she wouldn't have sat them together so why she wouldn't allow our different groups to have 4 tables makes no sense to me. She was very upset & I understand being stressed but I was very clear & they could have just said no & we would have gone somewhere else. Her complete disregard for people's health over the bottom line of the restaurant was really disconcerting to me. Also wish I had read the bad reviews about her bad behavior in the past before making the reservation. I would not support this owner. read more

Authentic Greek restaurant with fabulous fare on the quiet side of Astoria made a Saturday afternoon spectacular. Shared the stuffed calamari, grilled octopus and traditional Saganaki (fried cheese). Very rude owner/ blond lady. We were celebrating our mom's birthday. When we arrived the owner lady very rudely said "you have until 6:30 " however nothing was said when we made the reservation that there was a time limit on the table. The owner (blond lady ) made us feel very uncomfortable but we decided to give it a chance since it was too late to make other reservations. We finished our meal early at 6pm but wanted a small dessert to finish off the night We sat there waiting for 30 minutes and no one came to ask us if we wanted anything else. When the time came, the owner lady came to our table. We asked her if they have dessert since we wanted to make our mom's birthday special. She started to yell at everyone at our table that we have to leave and said I told you that you have two hours. She continued to yell and didn't allow me to speak . We spend over 400 dollars there. Who talks to people like this !?!?! She ruined our mom's birthday The atmosphere in the restaurant very stressful. She yells at costumers and staff. Food is ok.
