There's something about La Provence in Ambler that just feels special. La Provence…read more It has that romantic French countryside ambiance that makes you want to slow down and stay awhile. It's also BYOB, which makes it even better -- bring your favorite bottle and make a whole night out of it. The vibe is warm, intimate, and perfect for date night, but they also have a gorgeous outdoor space that can host up to 100 people, making it such a hidden gem for larger parties and celebrations. They opened in September 2019 -- just six months before the pandemic -- which makes what they've built even more impressive. It's truly family-driven. The husband, Manuel (from Spain), is the head chef, and you can absolutely taste the care and authenticity in every dish. Cindy, who is from Panama, brings so much heart to the restaurant as well. We started with Prince Edward Island oysters and the crab salad, which had crispy bacon pieces for a great touch of texture and the crab was incredibly fresh -- such a perfect balance of flavors and crunch. For entrées, the beef bourguignon was rich, comforting, and everything you'd hope for from a classic French dish. The Dover sole felt elegant and perfectly executed. We ended with the chocolate mousse, which was light, decadent, and the perfect sweet finish. And I have to mention our server -- Delroy was fabulous. Attentive, personable, and so knowledgeable. He truly elevated the entire experience. Between the ambiance, the hospitality, and the beautifully prepared food, La Provence is absolutely somewhere I'll be coming back to for an elevated night out.

Dined there last night. I'll start by saying the food was absolutely phenomenal!! 5 stars (or more)…read moreall the way. The food stood up to almost any restaurant we've dined at in Paris. It had been awhile since we dined there last. The problem, service. We arrived a bit early, but were sat right away. The server, Delroy had 5 tables, and we watched as he went back and forth to each table, being jovial and asking each table how was everything. He then came towards our table, and took a swift turn to give more water to the table next to us. He could have at least acknowledged us during his many table visits to every other table, but chose not to. After about 10-15 minutes of waiting he finally decided to greet us. My wife and I do not drink alcohol and the look of disgust on his face when he was removing the wine glasses from our table was quite obvious. At that point he figured a low check amount without selling a bottle of wine, so the effort to give a great dining experience went to zero immediately. He told us the specials and disappeared for another 15 mins. He came back to take our order, and that was the last time he visited our table! We never saw him again. The non alcoholic drinks were delivered by the back waiter, and may I say she was incredibly attentive to us. We were delighted by the appetizer, shrimp and crabmeat in a garlic sauce. Then the entrees came out. We actually enjoyed the appetizer so much, had Delroy decided to visit our table again, or bother to check how everything came out, we would have ordered another one. I wanted another drink, but was unable to get one because he was making multiple table visits to all the other tables, telling stories about his wine experiences, but again, never returned to our table, not even once! We really wanted to order the crème brûlée for dessert as it was my wife's favorite and we were celebrating her birthday, but he refused to come to our table. At this point, we just wanted to pay the check and leave, go somewhere to get dessert and celebrate her birthday. We finished our meal, and I actually had to call out to him as he passed our table to get his attention for the check, he glanced over and said, "one minute" and kept walking. Then he starting walking our way and just passed our table again, and went to water the table next to us for the fourth time, before turning around, staring at me, without a word, as I asked for the check. He said, "no dessert"? I said no, just the check. He sent the back waiter with the check, then picked it up from the table, after processing it, dropped it on our table without a word, and walked away. Against my better judgement, I still left him a 20% gratuity. We left and went elsewhere to celebrate.

The building is somewhat unassuming, but the interior is well decorated and provides a suitable level of elegance that supports the menu! The food is excellent! For entreés, two had the escalope of veal, one had the roast duck, and I had the veal chop! Beautiful presentation, excellent flavors, and there was not a bite left on any of our plates! Making the experience even better - Bunha Faun is a BYO restaurant! I pulled two bottles from my cellar that paired perfectly with our meals - a Pinot Noir with appetizers and a 100 point Cabernet Franc with our entrées. A perfect night at a very special restaurant!!!

Even if you've dined here a number of times, it still somehow manages to slip under your culinary radar... And that is truly a shame, as this diminutive Main Line mainstay has so much to offer. The unassuming exterior notwithstanding, the restaurant's interior is attractively and tastefully appointed. And the cuisine - French fare with an Asian flair - is consistently lovingly prepared and beautifully but simply presented. One glance at the Snow Pea Salad, for example, and you realize that the food here is really something special. When it comes to ingredients, the dish is the soul of simplicity... snow peas, mushrooms, and a splash of sesame dressing. But the constituents are arranged so artfully - the snow peas fanned about an epicenter of sliced mushrooms - that the presentation succeeds in beguiling the eye as well as the palate. The more seasonal Asparagus Salad - spears caressed by a wafer-thin carrot sheath in pools of sherry vinaigrette - is just as photogenic and equally delicious... As was my starter, Oriental Noodles tossed with sesame dressing topped with slivers of chicken and crushed peanuts surrounded by alternating snippets of carrots and broccoli. Simple but sublime. This is obviously a kitchen at the very top of its game. My dining partner, however, would be quick to tell you that nothing quite measured up to the Escargot. Baked in garlic butter, served on a bed of spinach, and topped with Swiss cheese, it was both incredibly rich and extraordinarily delicious. Not to be missed. Just be sure to postpone your next cholesterol test. When it comes to entrées, the Sautéed Barramundi is an uncommonly special treat. Because of its firm moist texture and sweet, buttery flavor - somewhat akin to halibut and grouper - it has quickly become the darling of seafood lovers and confirmed carnivores alike... Even people who don't like seafood tend to like barramundi. Bunha Faun's kitchen prepares it with a slightly unusual but extremely subtle ginger scallion sauce... The result is simply extraordinary. Although my dining partner enjoys finny fare, she much prefers shellfish, which have been her entrées of choice during several visits. She definitely enjoyed the Sautéed Shrimp and Scallops. These were served up with artichoke hearts and mushrooms in a Champagne cream sauce. And, yes... the dish was exceedingly rich. But even better, in her opinion, was the choice during our most recent visit, the Sweet Red Pepper Shrimp. Companioned by a very nice rice pilaf and sautéed green beans, the perfectly prepared crustaceans were decorously anointed with an exquisite red pepper sauce that was just sweet enough to complement rather than smother the objects of its affection. If I had to choose my favorite entrée, however, my nod would certainly go to the delectable Escalope of Veal. I have sampled numerous variations on the theme over the years, but Bunha Faun's kitchen turns out something that is really quite special. For starters, the veal is pounded nearly wafer-thin and is incredibly tender. Then, of course, there is that utterly addictive white wine sauce aided and abetted by wild mushrooms and prosciutto. And it is undoubtedly the prosciutto - and its irresistibly sweet/salty countenance - that propels this dish into an entirely unique and exciting flavor dimension. If Bunha Faun has a low point culinarily, it continues to be their desserts. With the exception of the Crème Brûlée (which was absent from the menu the evening of our most recent visit), the usual suspects are trucked in from off campus - Tiramisu Cake, Chocolate Velvet Cheesecake, Dark Side of the Moon Cake, etc., etc. And this is, indeed, unfortunate. Given the overall quality of the appetizers & entrées, just a few more homemade desserts would add immensely to the total dining experience. On the other hand, I freely admit that my dining partner's Pecan Pie and my Cappuccino Truffle - dark chocolate encrusted cappuccino ice cream with pieces of candy toffee - were both, if not memorable, certainly quite tasty. To my knowledge, food has never been an issue at Bunha Faun... No, the major gripe has usually been with regard to service - a two-fold issue involving both servers and the kitchen - which, upon occasion, can be somewhat slower than a herd of turtles. So, if you plan to dine at Bunha Faun - and it is most assuredly worth a visit - my advice is to make it your only stop for the evening... Just in case.

We were seated quickly, and from the jump, the staff was on point--attentive, friendly, and knew that menu like the back of their hand. Real ones who make you feel welcome without hovering. The artwork throughout the dining area really stood out--elegant and thoughtfully curated. It added to the atmosphere in a way that made the whole experience feel intentional and artistic without being pretentious. Now the food? Fire. Every dish was well-prepared and bursting with flavor. The homemade vinaigrette was one of those small details that made a big impression. I had the duck breast--tender, flavorful, and plated like they cared. My girl went with the zucchini omelet and potatoes, and let's just say... I definitely helped her finish it. This spot serves up breakfast with a more refined twist. It's not your average eggs-and-bacon joint, and the pricing reflects that--about $35 each--but the quality matches the tag. You're paying for fresh, high-level ingredients and a well-thought-out experience. Pros: Flavor that hits, fresh ingredients, standout service. Cons: Seating's a little tight, and the menu leans more gourmet--so if you're hunting for pancakes or a simple bagel, you might be outta luck. Definitely recommend for a weekend treat or a chill brunch date with a little flair.

The side potatoes had a nice crisp to them, and the chocolate croissant was a standout: freshly made, perfectly flaky, and well-balanced in sweetness. My significant other had the chicken salad, which was paired with a light, fresh vinaigrette that tied everything together beautifully. He also tried the duck, which was tender, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. Overall, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try. It's affordable yet feels like a higher-end brunch experience--perfect for a casual date or a special morning out.

I wish I could say I was excited after dining there for the first time but I have to say I was left somewhat disappointed. I can overlook most things, but when dining out i go for the food. And the food was just OK. We started out with cocktails. Two of us ordered from the unique signature cocktail menu and one of us just decided to have their usual Kir Royale. Of these three drinks, the Kir Royale was the best. Neither of the others thought that their drink was so great that they would order it again. A young man showed up at our table with three small dishes, asking, "Are you familiar with amuse bouche"? Yes I am. I don't need an 18 or year old to try to make me feel like he knows more than I do. It was condescending at best and just pretentious. He explained it was compressed cantaloupe with a mint oil and a touch of salt. If I had closed my eyes, I never in a million years would have tasted anything except a little bit of salt and a little bit of water. It was flavorless. For appetizers, we shared the snails, the rabbit poutine, and the foie gras. Both the snails and the poutine came with a sauce, and the servers almost insisted on pouring the sauce over the appetizer. One of us opted to stop the server because why would you bring it on the side and then not let me elect how I want it on there. That just did not make sense. There's no theater here you're just pouring. The snails were served in a vol-au-vent and were kind of lost in the too tall puff pastry. Both the snails and the poutine were lacking some serious flavor. The best bite of the appetizers was the piece of foie gras which was served on a comparatively mammoth-sized sleepy zucchini bread and with pickled local strawberries. I didn't care for the combination and for the price, the two bite piece of foie gras was not worth it. (understand you can drive 3 miles to a restaurant that puts more of it on a burger for that equivalent price.-plus you get an 8 oz burger). The pickled strawberry did not work either. We also order the "bread service." I don't like paying for bread but was intrigued by the bone marrow butter upsell. For $20 you get 5 slices of bread, some salted butter, and at most a tablespoon of bone marrow butter. Skip it. Not worth it. For entrées, we ordered the salmon and the duck for two. The salmon was supposed to be seared, but the presentation side looked more like it had been steamed or poached. Perhaps they seared the skin side, but this particular diner did not like salmon skin, so that was lost on it. The diner did not like couscous, which was the side that came with this dish so they asked for the pomme puree as a substitute. The potato purée was also lacking seasoning and of course we got charged $8 for the substitution even though this potato purée is a side for other entrées. The server who took our order recommended the duck. I'm a big fan of duck so our other dining partner indulged me and shared this entrée with me. The duck came with two breasts, two confit legs, baby carrots, cooked in duck fat and a frisée salad. This was probably enough for three people because we took home 1/4 of a duck breast, a whole leg and plenty of carrots. The duck breast was well rendered of the fat, and the skin was crispy. I like a medium rare duck breast but the underside was very rare as if it was never flipped in the pan. The leg was delicious (probably tossed in the deep fryer before serving to crisp the skin) but the carrots were heavy with fat. Very little frisée was served (almost as a garnish ) and it really needed more of it that acid from the dressing to lighten things up. Again the server tried to pour the sauce that came with it over the breast without asking if I wanted it first. I stopped them because I know how much I want and I know where I want it. I don't need you to do that for me. One cocktail, one appetizer and one entree per person was $100 per person on average. No tax in DE Service here is amateurish with training. I have already cited a few things. The waitress who took our order poured water for each of us spilling a significant amount when pouring one glass, said I'm sorry I misjudged. Bad depth perception, she said and continued on with her opening spiel which we got to hear in almost the exact same fashion as she greeted other tables. No offering to change the tablecloth of its two foot diameter circle of wetness. She just kept it moving. We came dressed business casual. We were the best dressed there. Lots of shorts and casual wear. This is not a fancy place. People appear to come as they are. I just did not get that I want to come back here feeling. Service was not great. Food was just ok and not ok for the price. Atmosphere is more American bar than French bistro. I am not super charged to go back.
