I have been here 3 times and have to say that their service is SLOW! We went for dinner on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Even when most customers that came in after us and we are still waiting on our bento box and few rolls. It took nearly an hour for a few a roll and 2 bento boxes? First time here and was initially worried because it was empty at 11:45am. But we ordered the lunch tempura bento box and people started filing in rapidly. The salad was significant and dressing was delicious!! The miso soup was so flavorful also. No skimping here at all on the bento boxes ! Their sushi is excellent quality also. I have only been to Ahoyama a handful of times. Not sure why because it really is very good! This time I went with classmates from DuVall's (Yes! Shameful (not!) plug for the Esthetician program!) We all ordered different items. I ordered the New Texas Roll, with beef, crunch shrimp (tempura), avocado, jalapeños, and vegetables (lettuce? Kale?) rolled in rice paper. While I am not a tempura fan, this was great! I am not a big beef fan, this was surprisingly yummy as the beef was tender, the "crunch shrimp" added just that...crunch! The avocado and jalapeños added a Tex-Asian flair to it! Or would that be Asi-Tex? One of my dining mates got the Volcano roll which is unlike any I've ever seen...meaning it looked huge with lots of seafood and it looked so tasty!!! The bento boxes were much bigger than they appeared in the pics of in the menu. Rear view bentos? Get it? Like rear view mirrors? Objects appear closer... Anywhoooo...as far as I can tell, everyone really liked their food and I can say that I will be going back and a lot sooner than last time! I do have to say that we put our waitress through her paces as there were 10 of us...and it was lunch time...and we had an approximately 45 min.! Need I say we kept her on her toes! The Baja Fresh roll is a California roll with fresh fish topped with fresh mangoes, tomatoes, onions and jalapeño peppers. K Special had spicy crab meat topped with assorted fish and seafood. It was ready at 645 and they didn't bring the order to the front until 7 after three people asked me my name. Waste of $20 rolls are so tiny. I have lived on the California coast for 20 years. Every time I come home our family goes to Ahoyama and it has never disappointed. I have tried half their rolls and they are legit. This is the only sushi place we eat it in the mid-cities area. It's the best!! Try the crispy tuna roll - it's so delicious and not offered at many other sushi establishments. For anyone who has issues with texture or finding simple foods to eat when you're feeling iffy about it. I cannot recommend the chicken hibachi enough! We ordered the Teriyaki Bento Box which came with, chicken, rice, miso soup, house salad, California roll, fried tempura and fried gyoza. Two miso soups, two orders of white rice and a Volcano Roll. All of it was presented well and tasted as good as it looked. The salad was fresh as well as the sushi rolls. The Teriyaki Chicken was well made and still moist. The fried gyoza was so tasty! The bento box can honestly be shared by two people! Customer service was good. Was greeted and seated right away. Got our orders taken as soon as we were ready. I had a sushi craving at 8:30 at night. I hadn't even noticed this place on 26 even after all the times I drive right by it. Yelp says its the best in the area, and open until 10. Game on. Let's give it a try. I originally was going to just get some sushi to go, since I was by myself. There wasn't a single car in the parking lot, which is always a scary sign. Then I realized that it was now 9pm. I walked in and was greeted by the chef, the hostess, and my waitress all at the same time. I decided that I wouldn't mind eating here and having some fun conversation with bored employees. I sat myself at the sushi bar. I asked for a Sapporo and was very quickly brought one. I filled out my sushi order and handed it to the chef. She told me all about her family in Korea, and her 2 kids that she has here. She did that while slicing some great looking tuna and salmon. After about 5 minutes of work, she handed me my plate full of 16 pieces of assorted sushi. I went to work. Their peppered tuna was about an 8/10. Could have used a bit more searing. The yellowtail was great, about a 9/10. Salmon was a 10/10, as was the regular tuna. Flying fish eggs were delicious. Great color and flavor, 10/10. Unagi had a bit too much sauce on it, 7/10. I also got a spider roll. The flavor was great, but the pieces were just too big. I have an enormous mouth and I am still saying they were too big. 7/10 for that. I finished around 9:40 and was brought a check and the typical sushi orange. My experience was great, and I would love to come back again soon. read more

I ordered a lunch deal to go that included spicy tuna, California rolls, miso soup and a big salad with a yummy Asian dressing. Pretty much just the basics. I'm going to branch out next time and get something more creative as they have a ton of different items on the menu. It is beautiful inside too and super clean. I'd love to come for lunch on a day when I'm not working, have a drink at the sushi bar and just kick back. It is in a tiny shopping center too so don't blink or else you will miss it. My wife and I travel all over the world, and this allows us to try the finest restaurants along the way. In dissension to the assertion that the only good sushi (or more aptly, sashimi) is exclusive to coastal locales, I offer - BALDERDASH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Of the ten finest sashimi restaurants we have visited, only one is in Cali, three of our top ten are in the state of Texas. We eat sushi/sashimi on average of 2-3 times per week, not to say we are experts but we are certainly "seasoned veterans". On to the task at hand - Ahoyama - In my opinion, a sushi restaurant distinguishes itself by: 1) Freshness of ingredients 2) Creativity and ability of chef to make timely recommendations - Omakase 3) Presentation 4) Staff Demeanor (Friendly, welcoming, prompt) It is with these four factors in mind that I bestow the five star rating!!!! While the fresh fish selections available at Ahoyama do not include some of my favorites (uni, jellyfish, bluefin, fugu/blowfish will not be found here) this review isn't about what they do not have - it is about what they do have!!!!! And Ahoyama has as impeccably fresh salmon, tuna, albacore and yellowtail sashimi that you will find anywhere!!!! Their rolls are a very interesting cacophony of contrasting flavors and textures - presented in a manner that is as pleasing to the eyes as it is the palate. Kim is as skilled as you will find, and as a bonus, she and ALL of the staff are genuinely friendly and respectful. On only our second visit, she made us feel as though were a part of the "family". We have been here many, many times and have never been dis-satisfied. We will continue to visit regularly and I think anyone who would like to enjoy a great dinner should also. read more

We came here after seeing pictures of the ahi tower! My favorite thing to try at sushi places is the ahi tower. We started with some salmon and snapper sushi, ahi tower, then my husband got the yakisoba and I had the butterfly kiss roll. The sushi pieces was ok. The ahi tower was great, very big. But the Yakisoba was very salty, and the butterfly kiss roll salmon was not very fresh, and you kind of need to have rice on the roll. read more
