Bliss-LESS Spa I got a YELP message about Bliss Spa's Grand Opening Special: $20 for a 60 min foot massage! It sounded TOO good to be true, so I decided to check BS's reviews. There was just one, which looked sketchy based on the content and the Yelper's profile. But, I forwarded the info to my gfs and we thought for the price it wouldn't hurt to try it out. I called on Sat 4/3 and was easily able to make an appt for three for Sun 4/4 at 3 PM. After our Xiao Long Bao fix nearby, my gfs and I headed to BS. BS has no signage but a yellow banner that says, "Grand Opening" with a lit-up Foot Massage sign. We had no expectations, but were pleasantly surprised when we walked in. BS is very clean and had leather coaches and a set-up of facial cream items which put us at ease that it was legit place. We opted for the $25 massage, which consisted of a 40 min foot massage, 15 min head massage, and 15 min shoulder/neck/back massage. Our appt time was 3 PM, but the actual massage didn't start until 3:20 PM. Here's a breakdown of the process. 1. We were escorted to a room with two leather recliners and were brought tea which was lukewarm, borderline cold. 2. Wendy, my masseuse brought a wooden bucket of water for my feet to soak in and walked off for 10-12 minutes. My gf and I found this odd as normally, they work on other parts of your body while your feet soak. 3. When Wendy returned, she dried off my feet and preceded with the foot massage which was painful, but felt good at some times. She kept on pressing on my big toe, which was painful and made me squirm. She told me to relax which is difficult when you are in pain. She spent most of the time massaging my toes and the arch of my foot. She used very fast strokes which made me more tense at times than relaxed. Also, she wore plastic gloves and didn't use enough lotion, so it felt like plastic rubbing against my skin the entire time. 4. After about 20 min or so, Wendy proceeded massaging my calves which was again painful because she was using the force from her thumb and pressing against my shins the entire time. 5. Wendy then reclined the coach and had me turn over for the head and back massage. She started with the head massage which felt like she was scratching my head as opposed to massaging it. This lasted for about 5 min or so. 6. She then transitioned to the neck/shoulder/back massage which was NOT relaxing. I felt like my back was being "waxed on" and "waxed off" and the pressure was very light (like a light pat). I found it weird b/s she had used a lot of force and pressure when she was working on my feet and calves. Also, the back massage wasn't consistent; i.e. she would pound the left side of my back and not the right side. AMBIANCE: BS is very clean and the rooms (6) are split in half by a partition. The rooms were freshly painted white and had grey carpet. The entire time, I could hear footsteps from above which we thought were the residents living above. However, when we left, we noticed there were no windows on the second level; ummm, so where exactly was that noise coming from? PRICES: *Introductory prices of $20 for 60 min foot massage, $25 for a 70 min foot/back massage, $35 for 60 min back massage and $30 for a facial which are good until 4/15. Prices are $10-15 higher after 4/15. OTHER SERVICES: BS also offers 4-5 different type of facials like for anti-aging, acne, and deep pore cleansing, and body waxing. PARKING: Since BS is located in the Outer Richmond, it's relatively easy street and metered parking. If it weren't for the price, I would have given BS 2 STARS b/c the massage was inconsistent in pressure and motions which left me more tensed than relaxed. But, I can't really complain much because sometimes you get exactly what you pay for. read more

Is a 0 star possible? If it was, they'd receive one... Fellow yelpers, I am warning you about this place. My mom and I had a deep tissue body massage. I bought one of those groupon deals, and NO WHERE did it say it was only 30 minutes. But whatever, I'll let it slide. When we get there, I decide to make it an hour and she says sure, $20 more ... no problem; that's still a decent deal. The massage was not what I wanted. It was too hard and they never asked if I was okay or I wanted it softer. Here's the worse part, my mom had the same treatment and her back is (literally) black and blue. She is straight-up bruised. So NOT cool. Anyways ... when we were done, we paid and tipped them $10 each. All of the sudden the woman who did my mom's massage starts talking in Chinese. We couldn't really understand her, and the woman who massaged me translated saying, "She says she thinks you need to tip her more". .. Uh, WHAT THE HECK? Who asks for more tip!? Luckily we didn't have any more money. We told her sorry, I don't have any more cash and she says, "Don't worry, when you come back, you tip me more." We smile and leave. I received a massage gifit certificate for 60 minutes of massage for my birthday. I'm sure my friend thought it was the Bliss Spa at the W. It took a long time to make my appointment. I called 3 or 4xs and was directed to a voicemail, which was full, and then it would hang up. (Red Flag) at this point I would've given up but since my friend gave me the certificate for my birthday, I felt I should at least go and check it out. I finally got a call back at the end of the day (thanks to my caller ID on their end) and was able to book. I drove the hour and half from Antioch to Balboa, in SF. Not off the freeway either. This spa is located in a residential neighborhood so there was zero parking. I kept having to circle for about 15 minutes and finally snagged one! Upon entering, it was very basic. It was not a "spa" like atmosphere, i.e. beautiful music playing in the background, a robe, locker, drinks, etc. This is very no frills, and basic. It reminded me of a massage I got in China. I was 20 late (due to no parking) and apologized. I was prepared to get only a pro-rated massage but since they weren't busy, they moved my appointment to 11:30 am. She led me to a room which was very cold, and told me to undress and hop on the massage table. I had to ask for water. The massage table was freezing and there was a paper towel on the face cushion. I laid there in silence. Face down. Wondering what I got myself in to. All I could hear was talking in the hallway, and the washing machine running, someone walking around upstairs. Not very relaxing. I had to ask for her to put on the music. I needed to drown out the washing machine. The music was asian melodies. It had the same tune as "It's a Small World" so I felt like I was in Disneyland. The oil was nice and warm. This I appreciated because I thought for sure she was going to slap on some cold cream and I was going to jump in shock. The massage was very good. I wasn't used to getting my butt stroked (except by my husband) so that was weird. Not what I was expecting! She also left the room 4xs to retrieve towels to wipe off the oil. I appreciate that - thank you, but why can't the towel warmer thing be inside the massage room? Just a thought..... Here is where I take a star away - someone (sounded like an employee) walked into the room while massage was in process, realized there was a massage going on (closed doors in a spa mean nothing?) and then said "ooops, sorry" and slammed the door! Anywhere else this would have been a discount on the massage. She did not massage my feet. I was so dissapointed but that's not included in the full body massage. Boo! I actually couldn't wait to leave. I just wanted to get back home. The lady at the desk said that I had to leave a 20% tip - minimum $10. Whatever. I just wanted to leave. I will not go there again. Purchased a voucher from TOWNHOG for a 60min massage for $45. -you get what you pay for and this was NOT a deal acording to my experience! I don't even know where to start. My massage started 10 min late. In the first 5 min there was a knock at the door and they switched my masseuse. The first lady had nice warm hands the one they switched for had ice cold hands to begin with. The massage was okay, she didn't focus on knots just rubbed. Towards the 35 min mark there was another knock on the door... words were exchanged and door closed. 10 minutes later there was another knock, words exchanged and the first lady must have forgotten her jacket in the room, grabbed it and left. ANOTHER 10 min later another knock on the door and more words exchanged and my masseuse seemed mad and took it out on me. she massaged my neck really hard and pushed my head side to side aggressively. This was hands down the weirdest most unrelaxing massage I have ever had. I knew when I bought the deal from Living Social that it was not the Bliss spa at the W, but $85 for a couples massage was too good a deal to pass up so I figured I would give it a try. Luckily I had read the reviews on here first so warned my bf that we might be in for an adventure. Good thing! We finally found the place. No where in the Living Social voucher did it mention that the name of the spa was not actually Bliss Spa, but in fact the Ali Rose Spa, so we were looking for the wrong thing, luckily we had the address so process of elimination worked in our favor. Check in was quick and we were led to a room and told to undress. There was no conversation about trouble spots, health, etc. My masseuse did ask what kind of pressure I wanted, but my bf's did not. His masseuse may not have spoken English as she did not talk at all. The massage itself was....invasive. Which I don't actually mind as my sciatic nerve bothers me quite a bit. My bf mentioned after that his massuese "checked his oil" a number of times during the massage. It was very distracting when his massuese started grunting and panting heavily about halfway through the massage. The music was also very distracting as it was really loud, not relaxing and on an incredibly short (I'd guess about 15 minute) loop. The nail in the coffin was towards the end when my massuese left not once, but TWICE in the middle of my massage to talk to someone in the hall. That should never, ever, ever happen. There was also no foot massage and she spent about 45 minutes on my back, neck and shoulders and 15 min on the rest of my body. Unsatisfying, to say the least. I have to say my experience at Bliss Spa was one of the strangest massages I have ever received in my life. During the whole hour I just wanted it to end for these reasons... 1. My therapist was coaxing me through the massage whenever I would take deep breathes. 2. There was no music for the first 15 min, so I laid there thinking it was too quiet. When the Chinese music came on, I wished there was no music though because the lady was massaging to the tones of the shrill music. 3. Instead of circular motions on the pressure points she just pushed over and over rocking the whole table. 4. She had me in awkward positions to the point where my arms were hanging off the table so long, I lost feeling in my fingers. 5. She laughed at me when I would writhe in pain not because it was too hard, but because pushing on anyone's bones is never comfortable. Now you may be wondering, why am I giving Lisa (my therapist) a 4 star review, which technically means "Yay! I'm a Fan." Well here's why... 1. It was $40 for an hour. 2. I felt more relaxed that evening and the following day than I have after many of the massages I have been to. So...would I go back? Probably not, unless maybe this Pinky girl that Jeni F. recommends is really that good, but overall I guess it was a good experience for that TYPE of massage? Just not really my style. This is a review on the effects of the massage only, not the staff (3 stars) or the ambiance (3 stars), or the price (4 stars). By girlfriend took me here for foot reflexology. A 70 minute combination foot and back massage. The foot massage was very painful, just as much as I could take and took up the bulk of the time. Since it was my first professional foot massage I figured this was just how they go and endured it. It definitely wasn't relaxing with a lot of pressure on the bones in my toes. My feet hurt that night and over the next 2 days I literally hobbled around. Now, 2 weeks later my feet still ache from the massage. It feels as though all my tendons were stretched, muscles pulled from the bone and bones bruised. They're also slightly numb feeling. I'm hoping they improve over time. This hurts more than my feet did after an 80 mile backpacking trip. I've never had chronic foot pain and sincerely wish that I'd not done this massage or at least told the woman not to grind so hard. Be careful here, trust your intuitions and don't be afraid to speak up. Update: Very soon after placing this review we received a phone call offering a free massage to make it better. This place is really far out there. I realize that statement will not be applicable to everyone but, for me, it was pretty far. That said, I had a Groupon or something similar to use, which I'd purchased because I mistakenly thought this was the Bliss Spa in SOMA. My husband kept complaining about his feet hurting so I thought this would be a nice idea for him and, of course, I needed to test it out as well. I had never had a foot massage before so I wasn't sure what to expect. Honestly, I was quite worried because my feet are pretty ticklish and normally that's the most difficult part of any massage. I'm either really optimistic or a glutton for punishment at this point. Of the 60 minutes, I believe, they spent roughly 20 or so on my feet and the rest as a full-body, clothes-on massage in some easy chair. Sounds weird, I know, but it was actually quite nice. Very comfortable and relaxing but just a slightly strange experience if you're not expecting it. I would probably give this place 3.5 stars. I'm no stranger to getting foot massages and though this was definitely not one of the best that I've experienced, it wasn't terrible. The place looks like a little house - and the rooms are small, with 2 reclining chairs. The rooms were clean, no complaints there, but the decor didn't wow me. There was also no TV (which I know at some other places they have) so be prepared to either sit there in silence unless you want to make small talk with the masseuse. The massage itself was fine, but the ambiance and the entire experience wasn't as relaxing as the other places I have tried. I should note that although the Yelp website for this place even indicates the $5 off for the 60 foot massage, that's not a discount per person. I came in here with my mom who received an ad in the mail with the same promotion and the lady only gave us $5 off total for the two of us...I didn't want to argue over $5...but shouldn't that be per person since we each got the 60 minute massage?! read more

Based on the reviews, I was expecting the worst time of my life but boy, you should never judge a book by its cover. Lily (my massage therapist) was awesome and the massage I received marks as one of the best I've received in a while. I just wanted to sleep like a baby after! The technician, David got talent on providing foot massage with pressure points. Because of his knowledge and techniques, my allergy is getting much, much better than before. I had tried many of foot massage spas before; however, those never work. I believed most of the technicians providing massage only for your comfort. Let me preface this unfavorable review, by saying that if you can swing an appointment with Pinky, then by all means go to Bliss. On my first visit, I had an absolutely BLISSFUL massage with Pinky and that was why I returned today. She would get five stars - but because of the horrific experience I had today, I can only average it out to two stars. I won't name names, but I'd say if it's not Pinky - DON'T GO! My gal today was not only the worse massage I've ever had, but also the most excruciatingly painful and abusive. No doesn't mean no here, and ouch means harder, harder! Maybe a safety word is in order when you check in here. My gal "knows" what's best for you and boasts of her work in "clinics". I am in severe pain 4 hours later, and know it's only going to be worse tomorrow. There was not a single moment of "ahhhh" or relaxation in 90 minutes. Whereas you usually pray for time to slow down with a good massage, I was praying for it to speed up. My jaw was clenched, I was shouting "OUCH" and yet we never understood each other. I felt downright angry when I left. Another big fat minus? When checking in I was asked for a member number, which I didn't have. She asked me to pay up front - I didn't like it, but handed her my card. She handed it back and said I could pay on my way out so that I could add the tip to the card. When I asked to confirm that she didn't charge it eariier, she said "NO, I told you later for you to put tip". The machine didn't work and they asked me to leave my credit card number and information so they could process later - ha! As I read through the other posts they seem eerily similar to what I'm about to write. I went to this place because I had a coupon--one hour massage for $40. Definitely a good price, but holy crap I wouldn't come back, even if it was free. To start, this was (as I promptly posted on facebook) the most awkward massage I have EVER received--I flat-out felt violated, it was that bad. 1) I walked into the salon and it smelled bad. No one was at the desk, and only after 15 minutes of waiting this lady showed up from the back of the building, seemingly mildly inconvenienced by my being there. 2) She took me back into the massage room, the air was cold and the bed was horribly uncomfortable. The massage started 20 minutes after my appt time, and with no apology from the masseuse. 3) The massage itself was so rough it was downright PAINFUL. I had to tell her every few minutes that it hurt, and she would laugh. LAUGH!! There was no smooth calculated movement, instead it was terribly jerky, choppy, and just plain wrong. And the intimate buttocks massage was waaaaaay over the top. Ugggghhhhhh 4) The "neck" massage hurt so badly that I almost just got up and left....actually, I wanted to leave about 10 minutes into the massage--I had no opportunity to relax, but I was hoping it would have gotten better. I was wrong. 5) I was so disappointed by the end, and so uncomfortable, that I wasn't planning on leaving a tip (I know I know, but really!! it was THAT BAD). But the lady kindly reminded me to leave a tip, so I gave her 6 bucks. That's a 15% tip on a $40 massage, decent considering she practically beat me up. She was not happy with that, and said there was a MINIMUM $8 for tip--woah, wait. You're telling ME that I'm REQUIRED to 1) leave a tip and 2) a minimum amount?! Oh no, honey. No no no. I bit my tongue (quite literally), took a deep breath, and said "you started 20 minutes late with no apology and that was the most painful massage I've ever had. I read some of the bitchy reviews about this place, and decided they deserved a decent one. I also heard about this place through Living Social. I didn't care that it wasn't the Bliss at the W. I'm not a hipster, don't need to get a massage at a cool hotel spa. I just wanted a nice relaxing massage. So I was glad it was out in the Richmond, in a quiet neighborhood. I bought a couples massage package for my sweetie and I for $85. It was totally worth it. The place itself is not super fancy, but very clean and neat. The woman at the desk greeted us with a smile and after a few minutes showed us to a room with a little glass of champagne each. They gave us about 10-15 minutes of privacy to undress and get comfortable. The music was interesting and soothing and we enjoyed our wait. I just want to make a little comment regarding time. I read a couple reviews that said they had to wait...one actually recorded the minutes a few times. When I go to get a massage, I'm there to relax. I never once looked at the time. My advice: If you are in a hurry, don't get a massage. It's sort of defeating the purpose. Anyway, back to the massage. The two women came in and said hello, and after that not a word (except for "move down" or "turn over", quietly). They were both very professional and had a firm but relaxing touch. I really enjoyed my massage. After they finished with the massage they left the room quietly and came back with hot towels to rub us with--which felt really nice and got the oil off us so we didn't feel all slimey :) I don't think I've ever had that with a body massage, just the hand/foot massage at a nail salon with my mani/pedis. That was a nice touch. When we left, we gave the ladies a nice tip (always tip on the regular price, not the discount--in case you didn't know) and the receptionist/hostess asked us how everything was. Of course we said it was great and thanked her. It was a great experience and I will most likely go back. My boyfriend's only complaint was that they didn't work on his feet. The reason they have a 1 at this point, is because I was gifted a Groupon to this place, and they have never answered their phone the five times I've tried them. Each time it goes to a voicemail, and then the voicemail is full, so I can't even leave a message if I want to. This stinks of bad service before I've even stepped foot in the place. I am worried: have they gone out of business, have they taken my hard earned Groupon cash? I am skeptical. I have tried all the foot massage type places in the outer Richmond, and many in the city and this is the one i have been waiting for. For so long now i have been seeking the perfect combination of good massage, strong hands, fair price, in a clean environment and finally i have found what i am looking for. I like deep tissue skilled reflexology type massage and these guys deliver for an incredible price. I do the package 45 minute foot and then one hour body massage for $60 (i buy 5 at once to get this price). I have tried both Pinky and David and they both have given me some of the best massages i have ever gotten. The massages are deep tissue and can be painful, so if you dont like a deep massage just tell them...but they are really good at knowing from your reaction and the tightness of your foot etc if they are pushing too hard. Pinky has the strongest hands on a woman i have ever felt. She also has an incredible feel on where you are tight and soar and likes to work those areas. David is a complete expert in reflexology and seems to be able to sense sourness and "unhealth" just when he waves his hand across your foot...i have only seen this skill one other time. Pinky is by far the strongest woman massage i have gotten, and i think in the last three years i must have tried atleast 25 different woman massueses and almost was resigned to the fact i was going to have to go with some buffed out man. Its amazing Pinky puts out the type of power she does given her petit frame. I consider myself a massage connoisseur and before this place came along was driving all the way downtown for thai massage at La Biang and the massage was not as good, twice as expensive, parking was a hassle. I use to go in for a massage at La Biang about once a month, to give you an idea how much i like Bliss Spa i go in 3 times a week...it has completly fixed my sleep disorder and they found a problem in my back that has caused me periodic back aches for years and by working it out my back has become much more solid. I am really delighted this place opened up. THey have some special prices etc because they are trying to get new clients. About the space itself, it is clean and professional. I am first led into one of the foot massage rooms, with the standard reclining chairs. Although there is two chairs in each room, you never have to share a room. One little thing i do not like about this place is i think they have a policy to wear vinyle gloves during foot massage..either that or my feet might be getting old and dirty looking :) ...they soak your feet a few minutes while they go to throw on there vinyle gloves. They come back and they go to work. I am immediatly transformed into this trance like state. If anything makes you uncomfortable just tell them...these are deep massages and are meant to push your comfort zone...but i know for people who are not use to this type of massage it may be too much...but believe me..its hard to find people capable of such massages, and even rarer to find someone who is willing to put out the effort to give such a massage and to put out that massive effort throughout the entire massage. You are doing them a favor if you tell them to back off on the pressure.. If you are wearing shorts they will do your shins and knees during this point of the massage. When they are finished they will come clean the oil off your feet with a hot towel, and then you leave this room and are led into a table room with a traditional massage table. They have two table rooms downstairs, and two table rooms upstair. An earlier reviewer wondered if someone is living upstairs..this is not the case. In the massage table room you are left alone to undress...i usually wear shorts but it is ok to undress down to your underwear. I get on the table and lay down face first and then put the towel that is provided over my body. I am saying all this because sometimes it is hard to get the etiquete right in a new place,and the first few times it was a little awkward becuase i wasnt sure how far down it was appropriate for me to undress etc. At some point your masseus will return and knock on the door and ask if you are ready. She/he comes in and immediately gets to work on you, and again i want to stress this is an inense massage they give This is definately not a happy ending type of place so for those looking for that kind of treatment you should look for one of the seedy places in the tenderloin. If you are looking for a profesional deep tissue massage, at a descent price range, for me this is as good as it gets. There is always parking right out front. read more

And then when you realize that it's not the spa in the W - and that it's in the Outer Richmond - you then have to drive all the way out to realize that it's actually Ai Rose. I didn't even get my treatment because after trekking all the way out here, the lady unapologetically told me it'd be at least 20 minutes. I didn't have the time and was very grumpy with her attitude so I'm trying to get my money back from Tippr. I don't know why anyone would go here. read more

wow...that was by far one of the most terrible experiences I had with spas. Terrible massage and poor customer service. We purchased Living Social Deal for couples massage and ended up paying double because they demanded $40 more on top of the $85 we already payed. I would even be ok with that, but during the massage both massage therapists were going in and out of the room, with us lying on the massage tables. They were leaving the room for several minutes at the time, and the remaining of the time that they were in the room performing massages, they spoke the whole time in Mandarin to each other. I am going to keep this short and sweet (or not so sweet actually) First off, I am pretty sure that neither of the woman who gave our massages were license massage therapists. My husband said he felt beaten at the end, where I felt like a 5 year old was rubbing gallons of olive oil over me. It was the WORST massage experience I have EVER had. Do not give them your business! I have paid for massages ranging from $30 - $300 and this was not even on the same scale as even the least expensive!! I purchased several $22 full body massages from kgb deal. I mistakenly assumed full body massage translated to one hour massage, but the staff mentioned it was only good for 1/2 hour. And, you can only redeem one certificate per visit; I had hoped to redeem for a facial as well. Not a problem, although, it's not really a deal if their going rate is already $45-$55 per full body massage. Parking is non-existent and took me a good half-hour in a mostly residential neighborhood. The rooms were clean and simple, but much to be desired for the music and decor. I would rate it higher for my massage w/Mimi (I couldn't understand what she said, but I think she said her name was Mimi?) but the overall experience weighed it down. I wouldn't go back, but I don't want my certificates to go to waste. True what they say...you get what you pay for. read more

Choose another spa! I had purchased a voucher off of Living Social, claiming to be "Bliss Spa" -- not to of course be confused with the actual spa place in San Francisco called "Bliss Spa." I decided to give it a shot as honestly, even a bad massage is still nice and better than nothing. I wasn't looking for atmosphere, but just a good massage. However, I was thoroughly disappointed and would never go back. First an hour massage was only 35-40 minutes in total (with about 10 minutes given to us to undress). The woman left 3 times in the middle of the massage for a couple of minutes each time unexplained. The massage itself was also very lackluster, they massaged my back minimally, never did the shoulders, the backs of my legs and rubbed my temples -- nothing else. To top it out, I still tipped 20% to be generous and the woman still asked me for a bigger tip! I had a Living Social coupon for a couple's massage. We arrived early and they happily accommodated us. Ambiance clean, bare bones, typical of Asian massage places in the area. Massage itself was ok, not stellar. What really turned me off was at the end they told us there was a mandatory $10 per person tip (roughly a 23% tip) in cash. Poor form and rude. Would be better to tack on the extra $10 and let customers tip what they feel the service deserved. read more

The. Worst. Ever. Wow, just got back from the oddest and most uncomfortable experience at this place. First, my friend and I had a 9pm appointment, which we diligently arrived at 8:45 for, only to be told they'll be setting up the room and be right back. Right back?!?! It was literally 45 minutes later when the lady re-appeared because I yelled 'HELLOOO?'! Then she explained how the second masseuse was working very hard today and got hungry, so he went out to eat?! But not to worry, he'll be back in 10 more minutes! Strange and totally unprofessional, but ok? Not so!! Another 15 minutes later and we were fed up and picking up our things to leave... But the lady popped out and told us to come back, that he was very near... Perhaps stupidly, we obliged. Another 10 minutes passed before two women entered the room--no man! After 10 minutes of a violent rubdown from my gal, the facility's doorbell rang... So I got left cold on the table. 5 minutes later a man came in and began to massage me with icy cold, smoker smellin' fingers. Ew. And here's the icing on the strange cake... My friend caught the lady quietly changing the clock forward during our session--turns out we paid for an hour and received 40 minutes of "massage" (if you can call it that) minus the 5 minutes left cold=35 minutes! My boyfriend purchased a couples massage for us and I have to admit I was expecting the "other" Bliss when I looked it up in the internet, so I was a bit disappointment when saw the actual place. I am not a spa snob but was really caught off guard when we got there. The lady at the front desk was really nice when we got there. We got our champagne and chocolates and time to undress and get settled in. The massage itself was nice, it was a little jerky and rough at times but overall she had a nice touch and the warm towels were a nice touch. I did not get my feet touched at all and the whole time I was being massage the lady who was massaging me was making jokes about my stomach noises. She kept talking and laughing every time my stomach made a noise. The champagne bubbles were making my stomach growl and she wouldn't let me forget it. She even told my boyfriend that he needs to feed me. I was really embarrassed. The lady who massaged my boyfriend was getting a little too friendly if you know what I mean! DO NOT BUY A PACKAGE DEAL!!! After my massage, I was pressured into purchasing a package deal. The woman assured me that the massages I paid for would be kept on file at the spa and never expire. The next time I went in, they said "New Owner!" and "Sorry the old owner took the money and left. Cash only for your massage because I don't have your money!" I purchased my first-ever 'deal' from Living Social, for the advertised "Couples Massage at Bliss Spa". I asked my friends if they had heard of "Bliss Spa" and they told me it was fantastic and it was a great price- too good to be true. I Googled "Bliss Spa, SF" and saw excellent reviews. Admittedly it was my first time using any sort of coupon offerings, but I purchased this thinking I was going to an actual spa with my boyfriend for Valentines Day. When I showed up at the "Bliss Spa" I was told they didn't have my reservation, nor was there such deal...that was because I was at the WRONG Bliss Spa. Luckily, we had planned to spend time taking showers and using the amenities at the W's Bliss Spa, so we were and hour early, giving us enough time to scoot to the OPPOSITE end of town to the "Bliss Spa - Foot Spa." This was all my fault, I should have Googled "Bliss Spa 4004 Balboa St, SF." We showed up to the front door of the equivalent of a low-end nail salon at about 7:50. No one greeted us until 8:10, we literally didn't know if anyone was there- except when started walking around to find the bathroom and saw them massaging another couple WITH THE DOOR OPEN! We came to the conclusion that perhaps this was going to be a little hidden gem with authentic and amazing massage artists, so we were willing to give it a try. We were put in our room and told to get naked (door never closed). Turns out there were two women working after all, and both came in to begin our "Romantic Couples Massage." I have gotten ranges of massages from Swedish, Deep Tissue, Thai, Hot Stone, Chinese, and the list goes on...but this was the worst experience I have ever had. I spent 8 months in South East Asia, and paid $3 in a much worse environment than the "Bliss Spa- Foot Spa" but this was unacceptable. I tried to tell me masseur what pressure was good, and she became angry with me, leaving me with 6 visible bruises along my back. One of the 2 broken face rests was covered with paper towels- not a terrycloth towel...for the face! I mention the broken face rest, with a metal bar across the middle (see iPhone photo). I was being pushed so violently, that the metal bar that started out digging into my chin, made an indent on the bridge of my nose. My masseur sneezed and didn't stop to wash her hands, but left a total of 4 times during the massage to answer the phone, lock the door, get towels, etc. The hot towels were re-used during the massage, just tossed in a bin and then picked up later to wipe off the oil. My boyfriend and I agree, we would have rather not gone and absorbed the cost, than endure such a wretched experience. I am humiliated and embarrassed that I gave this as a gift for Valentines Day, and thought you should know the caliber of companies LIVING SOCIAL is promoting. read more

My friend and I drove all the way from San Bruno Ave (about a 20 min drive) to take part in their special deal! We called ahead of time and she said that we can come in at 3:45. We get there and tell them that we want the combination massage and facial and they said, "No next time when you make an appointment....we have a 5:00 appointment scheduled." I told her that we did call and the woman at the front desk said it was okay. After that first phone call she even called back to tell us about the combination package--ok??? When we were there she kept insisting that we just get a massage! In my head I'm like....look lady we don't want just the massage! Holy crap...to cut the BS I nicely said, "You know what its okay....we'll just do it next time" and asked for a price list. I'm going to give this place another try when they are more accommodating, I'm a bit disappointed with todays visit and wished that they could have been more accommodating---arrrghhh! Worst massage ever...it didn't even qualify as a back rub...this place use to be called "Bliss Spa"...I am sure they changed their name to try to escape the myriad of crappy yelp reviews. My girlfriend kindly treated me to a couples massage here...mine was horrible the chick used her nails the entire time...I wouldn't go back if it were free. The real capper is that I tipped $15 bucks on $80 bucks..a dollar short of 20% (THEY DESERVE ZERO) and the lady said it is mandatory $10 per person tip. I told her that pos hoc tip policy was total bs and I would never come back and I would let the world know via YELP how terrible that place was....reading the other reviews seems like this is par for the course for this venue. read more

This place is terrible guys. I"m actually shocked that anybody had a good experience. The only thing I can say good about them was that they were nice people. But we were supposed to get an hour long massage that ended up being only about 45mins. Mine was at least "decent" but not good for sure. My friend, a small girl, kept telling them at that it was too hard of a massage she was getting and her person didn't listen...or in fact she did listen but ended up making fun of her. On top of all that, they proactively asked for a tip, when my friend was going to give her $5, they said they wanted $10. Ridiculous. I had a good experience at Bliss Spa. I had purchased some $50 vouchers for service for $20 through SF Gate. I booked a 60 minute massage and Cindy was my therapist. It was a very good massage! I like firm pressure, and Cindy's hands were very strong. She spent most of her time on my back and shoulders (which needed the most attention). 2 days later, I'm still slightly sore where some knots were on my back and shoulders, which to me means she did a good job working at them. I also really liked that she brought in hot towels at the end of the service to wipe the oil off, that was very nice. The location is good, it is decorated very minimilist, and appears very clean. My first visit here I received an hour massage from Pinky which was great. Then I saw the couple's massage offer and signed us up. This time the massages were sub-par. Warm oil (nice) squirted on my back in large dripping quantities (not so much) and the lady was digging a thumb nail into me which was uncomfortable. One movement on target in my shoulder and firm (nice) next moment lots of large soft circles swirling in the copious amounts of oil on my back (useless). We have had quite a few massages so are used to people doing something on one side of our body then doing the same on the other to balance out. Three different times I had a treatment on one side of my neck or leg and something different on the other side. My husband felt his massage was inconsistent with pressure either too hard or too soft. There's an old adage, "pizza is like sex: even when it's bad, it's still pretty good." Which is how I feel about massage. So for that reason and because they were pleasant and the place was clean and kept warm, Two Stars. I've only now read the other reviews and believe they have tried to make some improvements as it was quick and easy to make an appointment but would only recommend them if you live in the neighborhood and want to go for $49 massages with a $50 yearly membership fee or you can book Pinky or perhaps another person here with a good review by name. read more

Bliss deserves a nice review, because this place seems to be getting a lot of negative feedback. After receiving a massage here, I realize why those who are used to "Western" style spas might be disappointed. Bliss does not get fancy with new age music or aromatherapy, but they make up for it in technique and experience. Two days before my appointment, I had a motorcycle accident- nothing major, but I went in pretty bruised and sore. The full-body massage started out as normal, but when Lisa got a look at my bruises, she immediately changed gears to attend my wounds. She offered to use Chinese medicine and special techniques, which I've never experienced before and certainly wasn't expecting. Admittedly, the experience was not as relaxing as previous massages I've had, but felt more like therapy. My bruises are healing so fast I can hardly believe it. Lisa also advised me to use traditional Chinese home remedies, and took time to talk me through the process. Furthermore, she went over my alloted time because she was so thorough. I am always impressed by people in any profession who can deviate from their routine to address a customer who throws them a curve ball. Lisa's ability to adapt to my needs was remarkable. Also, while I was waiting for my appointment (I was early), I met a gentleman in the reception area who said that he and his wife go to Bliss regularly. He recommends Coco or Pinky. read more

i wanted to love it...i really did... i had been there a couple of times before it was renamed...for some unknown reason....and came for the 40.00 massage special...i walked in the building and even though i called ahead...they were surprised when i arrived...and i am 88% sure some full release type massage was taking place....only confirmed when they turned up the music really loudly when they spotted me....the massage was actually fairly decent minus the fact that the woman kept saying how good it must feel as she was massaging me...which felt awkard especially because i distane small talk...especially when i get a massage...but the icing on the cake...the thing that almost blew my relaxed state entirely...was that when i went to tip her at the end... i asked for 10 dollars back from a 20 i handed her....which felt fairly good on a 40.00 buck massage...but she just stood there smiling...saying everyone is tipping 20.00...she seriously refused to give me change...because i believe in karma and thought she must really need the cash...i went with it after a 3 minute exchange on the matter...while i firmly believe in supporting local places in my hood...this last tipping straw sit assured i will never return and/or recommend it to a soul read more
