A small local diner. Located across from the airport and centrally located near the hotel. You can walk, but you have to cross the street without sidewalks. They offer a great selection of food. I ordered the brisket sandwich. It was okay, not bad, but nothing I would go out of my way to get again if I went. The wait staff was attentive and quick. The Mrs. and I met my brother for dinner on a Thursday evening. They were busy, but not packed, so we quickly got a table and got in our drink orders. Drinks came out quickly and were good, and we put in food orders. Since we all got some sort of BBQ, the orders came out quickly. I love a good Salad Bar, but this trip none of us wanted that big a meal...either with the Salad Bar, or just the Salad Bar...etiher is a decent commitment if you're going to do it right! At any rate, our food came quickly and was very good. I got a Fried Onion Brisket Sandwich. The brisket melted in my mouth and the combo of flavors was great! My brother got the Pulled Rib, and my wife got the Pulled Pork...both were very good, though my wife said the pulled pork was a bit higher in fat for her slightly delicate system this time around (she's had it before), but was tasty nonetheless. Service was efficient, polite and friendly. Very casual atmosphere, but booths, tables, and the bar as options. Some quiet corners and lots of space out in the open. Good food! We had the portabella mushrooms as an appetizer. Then we split the sampler plate, which came with soup and salad bar and baked potatoes. It was a lot of food! I took home a full to go box! I am a professional driver. I get to drive in every state at least once or twice a year. A joy of each day is selecting a unique place for dinner. In 20 years of doing this, I've posted two or three times. I rarely find something worth posting, but I'm always very thankful for those of you that do take the time to post your reviews. Anyway, this place is amazing. I had the portobello mushrooms which might be the single most delicious fried food I've ever had. I talked to the owner about them and she said they are hand cut and battered every day. You can't come here without trying them. I also had the brisket with asparagus and macaroni and cheese, and a salad bar. The brisket was divine. It melted in your mouth.. I'm sad that I don't get to come down I-80 more often. I can't imagine why anyone would eat an $18 sandwich at the airport when, just a 10 minute easy walk away, you can get an unlimited salad bar with corn bread and soup of the day, plus an main and two hot sides for about the same cost. Service was flawless, my sirloin steak was delicious, and the chicken hoodie couple was made complete from scratch and tasted like grandmas. I arrived at 4 and had check in hand at 4:22. Went for the first time tonight and was so excited to try, yet had such a disappointing experience. Tuesday night at 5:30. Took over an hour to get our food! They brought out our appetizer (heavily breaded portobello fries- hot but not that good), salad bar was good - yet only one soup and the corn bread was stale... and no butter (just butter flavored spread!). ...Then nothing. Sat for an hour maybe longer waiting, waitress would check and say it was coming... everyone around us was getting food, but not us. She told us we'd have even more time to talk and visit. Finally they told us the kitchen didn't have our order, (not sure how we got our appetizer if this was so) and were working on it. One of us had just gotten the soup and salad.. so when we finally got our food they just got to sit there. No offer to comp the appetizer or even a free dessert. Nothing, bill was over $100. Food was fine, but I was not impressed at all. And honestly we were so irritated by that point we just wanted to leave. A stop by and apology from the manager would have been appreciated. It looked recently renovated to us. Nice small salad bar and soup which comes with entrees. I had the chopped steak and it was excellent. Excellent fries. Cheesy cheesy Mac and cheese. The food was good. The waitstaff does the best they can. It's the witch that Owens it that is the problem. Used to really enjoy eating there, until she starts telling lies, and causing a scene right in the dining room in front of the other customers accusing me of complaining about the food every time we go there. Heaven forbid if when the waitress asks if everything is ok, and you happen to mention that the french fries are cold but I was going to eat them anyway. Then I'm accused of just complaining all the time. It's no wonder she can't keep staff. If she can't take some criticism, about french fries, then she should, 1...tell the staff NOT to ask how everything is. Or 2... find a new job. I will NEVER eat there again after the humiliation she inflicted on me and my wife in front of the entire dining room. And I will tell everyone I know to stay away also. That was not met. So i searched yelp for a highly rated meal on the illinois side of the big miss. Service 10, apps 10 entree 10 casual conversation with chef was 10.
