We ordered the big breakfast at the counter. I tried to eat it fast it was warm. Then Them t pancakes were so cold they stuck to the fork. Maybe hold off on the pancakes for a bit. For a diner with a little bit of history, this place covers all the bases. Looks to be in a railcar or something similar, and it's a small place with what you'd expect to order from waitresses with lots of people to deal with. While it did take a minute to get our order in, as there's only one person working, cleaning, filling up drinks, and giving out food, once we ordered it was only a short lull until our food came out as perfectly as hoped-- crispy hash brows and home fries, sausage gravy on biscuits, and country fried steak. While they apparently don't have lunch anymore on their menu, the breakfast choices are all you need for a cheap, straightforward meal on the road. read more

I love it when you walk in the door and the waitress says, "coffee?" About 50 model airplanes hanging from the ceiling. Place is pretty run down, but it's heart is in the right place. My parents are regulars and I like it. Mary is great, very pleasent and always remembers your order after a few visits. The foods simple, good price, and you can order anything youd like if I dont want all 3 pancakes I can have two. If I want a custom omelete, Mary will make sure I got it hot and fresh. Overheard the waitress talking about the history of the little boxcar and liked it more, it's from the 1920s! Homefries are made fresh for every order, the bacon egg and cheese hit the spot, and pumpernickel bread is served. My boyfriends omelet was better than he imagined and was exactly what he needed, along with the ginger ale, after the prior nights celebration. Airport diner is our absolute favorite place for breakfast. We love Mary and the food that Bob cooks up for us. Their diner coffee is perfect- always good and hot and Mary is great at top-offs right when they're needed, even on the busiest Saturday mornings. I love that she gives our little guy "coffee" in his milk cup. There are many days when he asks to go see "miss Mary" for his hash browns and pancake. Terrible, awful service. Well.... NO service actually. The waitress- usually quite friendly- seemed overwhelmed. After sitting for 15 minutes, She asked what we wanted to drink- just 2 coffees- went to pour the mugs- set them down and put away dishes from the dishwasher. Then walked around for a while. Finally brought our coffees. As she set them down she promised to be right back to take our order. Eight minutes later, she came back but halfway through my husband's order- the kitchen staff handed her an order, so she turned and ran the order to another table. When she returned, we decided to pay for the coffees and go elsewhere. She said, $3.08. I left a five. Food is cheap. Usually good. Service is usually adequate. But today was frustrating. read more

Get the eggs...the eggs are always cooked well. Last time I got them hard boiled but usually get them over sunny. Sometimes I get a second order just to take home for later. They usually will give you some toast to take home with you to. They have tons of toast hidden away in the back I bet. I had there sausage and bacon to and it was very filling. Also well cooked. Looked out my window this morning and saw nothing but spit and drool coming down from the sky, so I left the Harley parked and hopped in my truck and headed out to KJ's. for some breakfast.I haven't been here for a while but I remembered that I had a good meal on my last visit.I recognized the waitress behind the counter from before.Her name is Mary and she is very pleasant to chat with and knowledgeable about the history of the diner.Seems it came from the neighboring town of Clinton some 40 yrs ago, changed hands about 4 yrs ago and is now known as The Shirley Diner,though the sign out front doesn't show that yet. Ony two other customers inside and I struck up a very interesting conversation with one, a correctional officer,who works at the prison just down the road.I never knew what a thankless job those people have and what they go through day in and day out, risking life and limb for not much money.I got a real ear full and now know what they have to put up with.Poor guy, I'm sure he was in just trying to wind down from his shift, and here I was bending his ear.He did seem eager to share his story and I was fascinated by it... Anyway,I had an awesome breakfast and the money goes a long way in this place.The coffee and service were outstanding.There isn't anthing fancy about this place at all.I love to talk to the workers and patrons in diners like this.The blue collar people who frequent these places make the experience more than just a good meal. read more

A very divey place, kind of in the middle of nowhere near some industrial areas. That being said, it is the kind of place you are looking for when you are on a backroad. First things first, CASH ONLY, but trust me when I say your cash goes a very long ways here. You will feel like you have stepped back in time as this place is small, and old but thats what makes it cool. Mary seems to be the person who is queen here and she is friendly, and very service oriented. Lots of locals here and she knows them by name and is quick to ask about family and situations. She knows her stuff. Food is basic home cooked breakfast and lunch and while I only had a cheeseburger and fries they were fresh, hot and flavorful. Daily special board has a mix of comfort foods, fish and even asian stir fry. All in all if you are in the area stop in. You'll leave satisfied. read more

From the glowing reviews I expected more from this diner. My fiancé and I went here with some friends and were sorely disappointed. The waitress was sour and surly. She was slow to take our order and were inattentive to our requests for refills on coffee and didn't check up on us. Our food was terrible. We had omelettes that were rubbery and no flavor and skimpy on the filling. I had ham and cheese which was one slice of cheese and over processed ham. My fiancé had three meat omelette that the sausage tasted spoiled and was bland. The environment was novel but that was the only interesting thing about the place. I've been eating at KJs since before is was called KJs. The Shirley Airport diner has been a staple in my diet for over 40 years. I stopped going when after 3 friday's in row I got food poisoning from eating the fish. I may have been the tartar sauce left out. However, it seems they got the word, I've returned, and have eaten the fish with no bad results. The breakfasts are good, not great. My hat is off to the folks trying to keep the traditional diner going. I miss the various flavor cakes Jen always had available. read more
