Rip-off artists! A leaking outdoor faucet would have cost me an arm and a leg! First, they pushed off their 2-hr time frame to the next 2-hr slot and arrived within 5 minutes of that expiring, holding me up for 4 hours. Then they tried to up-sell me for equipment I did not need. When I refused the up-sell, they offered to replace it with the same part for $600+. I explained this was my father's house and he just passed away last week and they offered to go a bit lower, but nowhere in my price budget. I wound up owing $51 for them to come out and run this scam. I asked the tech if he'd pay that to fix this in his own house and he couldn't bring himself to say yes. read more

I replaced my 30 year old a/c heating system last summer with A.J. Perri. I chose Perri over other contractors who could not provide a confirmed quote or estimate of when the work would be done. I did not want to hire some of the companies I used in the past. Perri went over all my options and eligible discounts. My work was scheduled quickly and completed in one day. My heating and cooling bills went down. The system is far more efficient and quieter than the old one. My filter only needs to be replaced twice a year. I've never had an unpleasant experience with any calls to Perri or service appointments. Appointments are scheduled at my convenience. Technicians are courteous and careful not to track dirt into my house and always remove all work related debris. Should I sell my home within the warranty period, the new owner is covered. We had a clogged drain that roto-rooter said would cost close to $500 to unclog because of it's location in the drain. Of course I didn't get that price out of them until I started questioning what hidden fees came with the $99 drain clearing. Everyone I spoke with at AJ Perri was professional and courteous. They went out of their way to help us even though we are not in their usual service area. And $99 was really $99, no hidden fees, no "but if we have to come back, or if we need to use a camera to look down the drain..." and there is a one year warranty on the service. I had problem with sewer pipe/line going out of the house in my rental house in Clifton (roots in an old, ceramic pipe).Since I was offered $89 per visit at Home Depot one day, I called AJ P. Got someone the same day and they were not able to fix it for good even though made water flow for a while. I was not charged for a visit plus no strings attached, so to speak ( at least I did not feel like being pressured to continue). Quite opposite to some companies around Clifton itself that quoted me up to $250 and at the same time wanted to be assured on the phone that I pay no matter what. I continued with farther investigation with camera that was offered free of charge. Than I was provided with update and options what else can be done. I end up replacing the pipe even though it seemed little pricey (still not much pressure). For me professional approach, insurance, several guarantees and assurance of background check was tempting. Also time was of the essence and with AJP all City Hall "issues" was covered and job done the next day ( but I was offered couple of days to choose from as well) I still have some concrete sidewalk to be replaced but so far everything has been going well. I will update as all be done. --- 4 stars not 5 so far due to price. I will make this brief. You get what you pay for. Without going into too many details, I will just say that we went through a few plumbing companies trying to diagnose and correct a very disturbing problem we had ( a reoccurring sewage smell in our home) right after purchasing our house and no one could help us. They either could not figure it out or did not want to help us. We were at our wits end. We had read the reviews about how costly using AJ Perri could be but they had a 100% guarantee so we went with it. It did take four visits with different technicians before our issue was completely resolved but they would not stop until they made it right and at no additional charges. They were always friendly, professional, understanding and sympathetic for what we were going through. They sat with us and explained in great detail what we needed to have done, the cost and the guarantees. Where many companies have 12 month guarantees, our is for 20 years. They eased our minds with their 0% 12 month financing.They did their work in the least invasive way possible and totally protected the work area with plastic. Even though they had to jack hammer through a tile floor there was no dust when they removed the plastic. After 7 months of living this nightmare I can finally love my new home and not be embarrassed to have guests. They sent around a coupon for early service of CAC. The technician found that $1600 worth of work was needed on 3 units (2 capacitors, 3 coil cleaning. He added a $10 charge per unit for the analysis so I would be entitled to a steeper discount on the 2 parts needed. Then he deducted a 5% senior discount and a disability discount. I paid the $240 for analysis. I asked my neighbor about this work and he said I was being taken! $1840 to their firm for work which wasn't needed and my "upgraded" coupon. Technician repeatedly told me to ask for him to do the work which would be scheduled for a different time. Another reputable firm came in and installed 1 capacitor only because I was afraid it would stop working on the hottest day as it was slightly leaking. Coils did not need cleaning. Cost was less than $300! I learned an expensive lesson and paid them $240 for a dishonest "analysis". At least I didn't pay them for unnecessary services and parts. The technician looked over the job and determined he needed to remove and reset the toilet.. "That will cost $499.00" I asked how long will it take to remove and reset the toilet? He said about an hour... so I said"So you're telling me you get paid $400 an hour? The prevailing rate (which are generally the highest rates in NJ) are only $90 and hour. Where do you get off?!?!?" He said it was his book rate! I threw him out and called a real plumber! I called Plumbrite Plumbing in Edison.. professional, courteous, knowledgeable and got the job done reasonably! I installed a Nest thermostat to control AC and furnace as a DIY project. AC worked perfectly but the furnace would not properly start. I spent hours with Nest tech support who at the end referred me to their recommended service ONTECH. I did not engage them because they could not assure me that they'd be able to look and potentially fix the issue regardless whether it is with the Nest (their specialty) or with the furnace (not their specialty). I called several local HVAC folks, eventually choosing AJ Perri as they assured me they are capable at looking end-to-end. While I was still apprehensive, their repairman, Elvis, knew exactly what my problem was and fixed it. Indeed, the issue was with the Nest wiring (which needed to be different than Nest tech support told me) and the dual power from AC and furnace that needed to be separated by a piece of equipment. Be very careful with this company. Called to take advantage of the $99 drain clearing "deal"and was told the drain couldn't be cleared because the pipe was corroded. Since my house is on a concrete slab it's a huge job to replace the pipe. Huge to the tune of $23,927. Called a local licensed plumber who came in today and cleared the drain charging me $150. Everything works perfectly fine. A.J. Perri is a total scam artist. I rarely write reviews but feel compelled to share my experience and warn the public of dubious business practices on the part of A.J Perri plumbing and heating. Called AJ Perri when we could no longer regulate the heat with one of the two thermostats in our home. After assessing our system the technician told me we needed to replace both dampers/motors and the cost would be $1100, I believe that was excluding labor. He also suggested that we should consider replacing our entire heating system, and that if I would agree to the work before he left we would get a 10% discount on labor. I declined his offer and, as he requested, immediately gave him a check for his assessment for approximately $100. A technician from another heating/plumbing company, Stellitano, was just here. He determined that one of the dampers had failed (not two) and that the cost to replace this damper would be $199 plus labor @ $90 per hour, and he thought it would take 1.5 hours of labor. Stay away from them!!! My AC was down and I went to home depot for help. AJ Perri sent a tech and checked it for me. It took this tech 5 min to do the job. He charged me ~$100 and told me compressor motor was bad and spin backwards. They gave me the quota for ~$1000. At the end he told me I'd better to sign up a regular maintance with them. I googled and many people had the same kind of AC problem. I'm not a professional. I bought a capacitor from amazon and replaced it myself (only cost me $17 and 15 min work). All I can say is Wow!. Too bad I didn't see these posts before I contacted them. We are seniors and called them for a drain clog around 1 1/2 or 2 years ago. The one guy came in and said he couldn't do it by himself. My husband (big healthy guy) said he would help but he had to call someone else to turn the switch on while he looked. I never write reviews, but I am just so upset. The salesman we had from A.J. Perri was akin to a life insurance agent or used car broker. He stayed in our home for FOUR hours, and only left when we became OUTRIGHT rude. It is difficult to put into words what the entire experience was like, but all I can say I feel at the end of it is: violated. I cannot comment on the quality of their work, but of the tactics that this one salesman used to make a sale. First of all, a good salesman is meant to listen to the customer. To respect the customer. The A. J. Perri salesman arrived at our home with flip books, reviews, photos, etc. This is all well and good, and certainly an important tool to show potential buyers. However, it is not ok to drag customers along for ride they don't want to be on. As he went through his schpeel, we told him we had time constraints (sensing a travelling salesman routine). He kept at a slow pace. We told him he could skip over sections of the flipbook, that we understood. He would tell lengthy stories to explain why we needed to go through those sections. We told him that perhaps he could go and look at our old system, see the rooms, etc. We expressly told him we were NOT going to sit there and listen to him anymore. Looking back on this, I believe that his "taking measurements" was also a part of this little vaudeville routine. In the "quote" there is no specificity of WHAT kind of units would be used. He began to talk to us again, after the measurements, going over the same pitch he had been doing before we suggested he just STOP TALKING and SEE the SYSTEM! Two hours later, he left. He did not hurry up when we asked him to a few more times. He did not care even when I began making dinner. We felt somewhat trapped, because you figure after a two hour commitment to this, you want to see the end result. At the end of it all, we were given a quote. We were told how we would get savings because of a sale. BUT. If we didn't decide and sign the paperwork, RIGHT THEN, we would lose half of those savings. It was threatening and manipulative. At that point, I flipped out on him. I do not enjoy having my time wasted, or when people attempt to coerce me. He still did not leave. He actually kept on trying to talk, talk, talk. I cannot explain this experience in a way that makes any sense. As I type this I am left feeling like I was abducted by aliens, or that I was taken in by terrorists and developed the Stockholm Syndrome (siding with my captors). After he left, my husband turned to me and said: "you know, it has been scientifically proven, that really annoying salesmen DO make more sales. That people just submit." The irony is. I probably would have GONE with the company. AJ Perri was guilty of taking advantage of a senior citizen in her hour of need. My 82 year old mother was in need of a repaired gas furnace and hot water heater. The AJ Perri salesman quoted her $16,000 for an installation that others bid $8,000. In addition, they signed her up for a Wells Fargo line of credit to finance the work at a 27% interest rate, right at her kitchen table. Usery? Upon learning of this I cancelled the job and had the repair work done for only $1,500! This is wrong on so many levels...taking advantage of a freezing senior in the wake of a hurricane, charging usurious interest rates, and generally being unethical. The guy had the gall to sniff the unit and tell me "everything has to be replaced" . When I asked him to maybe trouble shoot the electronics with a ohm meter instead of his nose he became snotty and said "I have been doing this for 30 years". Well I asked him to leave and called in another local company and they replace the transformer, thermostat, and filter for $800 and it was done. Hesitate before you sign anything. Don't get caught in a emergency situation like we did and be at their mercy $$$$ :-( Learn simple plumbing if you can !! Had a heating issue during this past cold snap. When it's 5 degrees outside & your bedrooms have no heat, you do whatever it takes to protect your family. Been hearing a lot of radio commercials on this company. OK, great. Called them..... They came out that same evening. Tech shows up.... Tech was on the phone getting guidance from a senior tech on what & how to ?? Professional ?? Experienced ?? Hummmmmm..... Sir, you have a bad water valve.... OK, whatever it needs to get fixed, fix it. After another phone call....... Here is the price...... $880 for the valve & to remove the old one & replace with the new one. OK, (Gulp) Do it, what other choice do I have ? OK, once the valve is in, I will have to "Bleed" your zones. OK You have 3 zones, it will cost $549 additional for each zone to be bled. One zone is included with the valve. (Again GULP & almost passed out !) I will only charge you for 1 additional zone. You have to be kidding me ! well, it has to be done, I have no bedroom heat. After actually helping this tech take the old valve out (with some of my tools too!) I walked away, why should I install an $880 part. He got the valve replaced, still NG. 2nd tech shows up. Sees my $880 new valve is put in backwards ! Finally, all is installed.......all is bled......I have heat........all except 1 room......tech says, call back if it doesn't warm up by tomorrow. I called back the next day, another tech finds a valve closed, 5 mins later all is well !! " No extra charge sir !!" yeah right $$$$ Looked up the retail price of this exact part.... $55....on sale $41 +Tax, S&H. Called the A.J. Perri company regarding what I felt to be "Considerably More than Reasonably Prices" Very nice & polite Svc Manager gave me a $250 "courtesy" refund. Something is better than nothing........ We recently called A.J. Perri to look at the water heater in my 90 year old mother's house. We could not be there when the serviceman came. He told her it would cost her $3,000 to replace the water heater. I had warned her about them because I read this blog after they charged me $400 to unclog my sewer line and then told me he would do it for $300, if I paid with cash. My mother told them she would get another estimate. We also recently had our water heater replaced, (which was a larger tank than my mother's), replaced, and It cost approx $900. So the next day we called another plumber for an estimate for my mother's water heater. He did the job for $950. Quite a markkup by AJ Perri. I also recall that a couple of years ago they charged her $300 to replace a part in the toilet tank, which was probablly a $10 part. I have a Moen pull out kitchen faucet and had a leak under the kitchen sink and called this company to fix the same. I figured out the issue was with the supply line for the hot water. I tried the usual tighten the nuts but that did not fix the leak and hence called this company to fix. I called up AJ Perri and not 1 but 2 technicians came in with a big bound folder. They looked under the sink and first made the wrong call . I corrected then that it is the hot water line. They also found a leak with the actual kitchen faucet and told me that the leak is from the stem and it cannot be fixed. They did not even take the time to check the source of the actual leak. They directly recommend replacing the entire kitchen faucet and the supply lines . Cost of installation is $346 plus cost of new faucet They also let me know that Moen does not provide replacement coverage for their products. I call up Moen and they help me figure the leak is with the cartridge in the handle and offer to send in a free replacement as their products have life time warranty for some parts. I would never recommend this company. A simple fix (replacing the cartridge and a supply line ) of less than an hour for an experienced plumber and they ask you to replace the entire faucet. I had a fan motor burn out recently. Perri came out to do repairs. The repair tech clearly gets a percentage of sales from new systems... The quotation for fan replacement was over 800 dollars, but he really, really thought we needed to replace everything. My wife agreed to have a quotation generated for a replacement HVAC system. The quotation wasn't forthcoming, as when the next guy arrived he asked my wife where her husband was. After some discussion, it turns out that they don't negotiate with women unless the husband is present. He was, apparently, able to leave with his reproductive organs intact (which was both unlikely and also fortunate for all involved.) I bought an appropriate motor from Grainger, after a few hours of research. Installed it in an hour or two. $175, plus my time and a few band-aids from sharp edges. I guess they have to pay for those exquisite paint jobs on their trucks somehow. They're not welcome here. read more

Stay Away! Do not use AJ Perri for HVAC maintenance, repair or replacement! They offer a cheap $89 maintenance check up of your a/c and it gets you 20 minutes of nothing. They didn't bother to wash off the outside of a/c condenser, clean/replace the air filter, or inspect or blow out the drip line (all important service issues). And if your a/c is over 10 years old, the technician will immediately suggest a replacement and recommend one of their "comfort experts" to come out and give you a free estimate to replace your system (the technicians must be incentivized or forced to push for an a/c replacement estimate). And even when you say no, they call you 2 weeks and then 6 weeks later and ask again. Then a few days after a second marketing call, your a/c stops working all of the sudden and you start wondering just what did Perri's technician do to it during that service call? Maybe leave a few wires loose on purpose? And so you call AJ Perri for service and a technician pretends to try to repair it, but spends more time warning you that if it is the starter relay, fan motor or the need for a hard start kit, it will cost $800-900 and might not help beyond the summer, so you are just better off getting a new system. He then states he "must call" the office to advise them that he is recommending a replacement and a "comfort expert" visit. And before you know it, the next day you have the AJ Perri Comfort Expert (aka used car salesman) at your house, who just wants to sing the praises of AJ Perri and its huge service staff available at a moments notice, and then he hands you a scribbled up "back of a brochure" handwritten estimate to buy their top of the line Carrier Infinity a/c system for $12k (actually $16k, less $4k of silly discounts pulled out of thin air). This is all while you already told him at the start of his pitch, you only want to know the costs for a basic, low cost system. Just an incredible rip off experience from beginning to end by AJ Perri. I am lucky because I called another local a/c service company, who assessed my a/c's problem in 10 minutes, replace a capacitor for $200 and my a/c unit is working again! My recommendation is to pick a HVAC company that is close to your home, one that relies on providing everyday quality service and customer satisfaction to stay in business. These big regional HVAC dealers/servicers are not local business owners, and won't care if they screw around with customers, since no one will hear about it and it wont affect business. AJ Perri is by far the best company in NJ for heating and air conditioning. I had them out to my house for service and the technician did an amazing job making me feel comfortable and showing me what he was doing and explained to me how my system works. From there I was speaking with the technician about my system since it was 20 years old about replacement options and he explained that he could have someone out to give me a free quote on a replacement system. I scheduled that the same day on the phone with the office. The gentlemen came out the same day and was the utmost professional. The comfort specialist asked several questions about my system and measured each room in my home to make sure I had the right size system for my home. He then examined my current system and went over several options for replacement. He also went over all the discounts he could offer me and several different budgeting options. I purchased the system the same day and he even have me the money back that I paid the tech earlier in the day. My system has been in for a few months now and everything is wonderful. My utility bills have dropped and I can even control my new system from my smart phone which is amazing. I would recommend AJ Perri to anyone and I read all the reviews on here and can't believe some of them as my experience with them was flawless as they are true professionals. read more

Worst rip off company out there and we are now planning on filing a consumer fraud lawsuit for the damage they caused our back up generator system as a result of their incompetent handling of its servicing and their lies. We are now stuck with over 1500.00 worth of repair costs as a result of their incompetence and what is AJPerri doing about it... trying to sell us a "new" replacement back up generator for 8,000.00. The misrepresentations, lies and gameplaying is truly overwhelming and needs to be dealt with. But lets start with the fact that we have been paying them 315.00 per year for a maintenance service contract for the back up generator and it turns out that they failed to show up to service the generator for the past year ( the tech acknowledged that they forgot to schedule the annual servicing for the year). Turns out that not only did they fail to service it for the past year, but the last time the tech did service it, he forgot to tighten the spark plugs for the engine and one of them came out causing the engine to run on 1 cylinder only ( which caused a host of problems including it overheating and shorting out the motherboard and destroying the casing. Initially, they tried to say it was not their fault but another tech acknowledged that all of the damage caused was from the other techs improper actions.... and to ensure that the spark plugs were in "tight", the 1st tech overtightened them when fixing the engine, preventing the 2nd tech from being able to remove them... and more damage. In the end, they told us that they would replace the mother board "at their cost" of 700.00. Later, another manager told us that they would replace the mother board at their cost - 400,00. and on and on they would go as to their efforts to get us to "share" in the cost of the repair costs. telling us that as a result of the damage to the machine, their costs alone for parts were over 1400.00. When we pushed back and pointed out that the damage was caused by their tech and his incompetence, they then offered to "replace" our current 20kw generator with a "new" generac 20kw unit for the "discounted price" of 8,000.00.- the same exact generator sold by Home Depot with the 200 amp transfer switch for 4300.00. And, again, they told us that they were selling it to us at their cost. Again, more lies! On every level, they have lied to us and misrepresented what work was needed and what the true costs were for the work and now we are left with a broken generator and at least 1500.00 worth of repairs because of their incompetence and misrepresentations. If anyone has similar stories, please share since it is my intent to sue them and make them pay for their actions and the more information I can gather on their fraudulent actions, the better.
