Fun place to go. We go once a year when we are in Pismo. This time it was only the wife and I. Normally the whole family goes but they were camping on the beach with their 5th wheels and were doing a group dinner. Only complaint I had was my rib eye wasn't the greatest. A little tough. That was kind of a bummer. Everything else was very good. The beans were really, really good this time! Service is always good. They are a well-oiled machine when it comes to service. We cannot say enough good things about this restaurant! The decor was amazing. It was built in the '90s, but honestly if you didn't know that you would think it was much more vintage or antique place. You love the ambiance. Meals were great and the portion sizes were huge. Horrible experience!!! My sister and I came into the restaurant and were seated in the bar. We sat there for a good 15 minutes and no one acknowledged us. I got up looking for the host who had seated us and he was no where to be found. We both got up to leave and the bartender chased us down and tried to seat us but there were no booths that were clean and he asked a waitress to clean it and she had a huge attitude and was not about to do it. this was about 6:00 pm and I really think the bartender was drunk! Service and food were both great! May seem pricey, but for the amount of food you get, it's worth it.

The ambiance of this place is really something. You feel like you are going into a western movie somehow with all of the western paraphernalia and decoration as well as the western music playing. They brought a heavy iron pot of soup and a bowl of beans and salsa. We liked the soup and beans and salsa possibly the most out of the rest of the meal. The steak had a slightly off taste and was not medium rare, more medium. The ribs and serloin combo were all dry and overcooked. While the service was pretty good but it did seem as though the server was serving almost all tables so it wasn't as frequent as would be nice for best service. We will have to try it again, but was just ok. More like an expensive and higher end Black Bear diner experience. read more

What a gem! My husband's company was doing a weekend work ( for fun) family trip! Our hotel was right next to this place so the bosses wife and I walked over to see if they could accommodate a party of 16 or so and the host was very friendly and immediately said yes. We grabbed a drink in the bar area ( which we learned later kids were allowed in, we told my twins they couldn't come in oops!). They had a live band which was really cool. The drink was perfect and everywhere you looked you saw something interesting, the decor is to die for! The wonderful host sat our large party immediately which was fantastic. The menu itse4lf is very extensive, definitely something for everyone! Upon sitting down, you get soup, salsa and beans. They tell you how to put it all together. The service was fabulous and the food was delicious! It might look a little pricey but their portions are huge and you get soup, salad, entree and even dessert included so the prices are actually very reasonable. Been coming here for years! Everything is included with the dinners. Soup with black beans and salsa you can mix in. Salad, bread, dessert. Mason was our server and he was great and very attentive. My ice cream was served in a plastic water glass which was odd to me but maybe they ran out of bowls. My rib-eye was cooked absolutely perfect! I ordered with Cajun butter on top and it was so tasty! We really enjoyed the food! We felt like our server was fast and prompt, they were also able to squeeze us in when we drove down to Pismo Beach on a busy Saturday night the week of the Fourth of July. The environment was just as good as I remembered :) Everything was five star UNTIL... we got our bill. A $6 split fee charge for a plate. Mind you both dishes alone cost $60 a piece, we ordered two soft drinks and my husband ordered a $14 cocktail. So it wasn't like we took advantage of the free stew brought as an hors d'oeuvre, stuck with water and shared just one expensive meal, I mean we ordered two of the most expensive meals on the menu alongside many other small items. We had a seven-year-old with food aversions with us who ate a half scallop, a few potato slices (with fingers not on the extra plate) and a bite of steak. A $6 split fee? $6 for a plate without notice wasn't right, we only know this because we worked in the industry, my husband being a pastime steakhouse chef. At his restaurant when you applied the split fee, you notified the table and gave them the option (we would have said no he could eat off our plates) but also he would give additional sides with the split fee. $6 for a plate, no. So in the future, it would be nice if the servers could please mention that. That's all! Otherwise great work! read more

The service was good, the food was the same, but the fact that they did away with the Boot Glass, truly broke my heart! That's the reason for only 4 stars. I've looked forward to my trip to the Central Coast ( I now live in Iowa ) and the best birthday celebration was my 25th where I got the boot glass which I still have. While the service was great I wish the food was better. We were seated quickly to a booth with a window and I was sat on a ripped seat. The food that was delivered to us was some of the most bland food I have ever experienced. The soup with the beans and salsa was just strange. Reminds me of something served at a retirement home. My wife and I ordered the 12oz steak and for $38.00 I expected more. The steak itself was cooked fine, but that's where it stopped. My wife's steak was undercooked to the point she didn't want to eat it and just wanted to leave. The rice tasted like Uncle Ben's microwave rice that you get at the dollar store, and the garlic bread had no garlic on it. The potatoes that were served were hard and had no salt or seasoning at all. We left before we could have our desert so I cannot comment on that. I wanted to love this place as it's such a cool restaurant, but after everything the price highly outweighs any positive experience you will get eating here and it's hard to recommend. read more

Restaurant is a slow country style with great food. AJ's environment upkeep allows a family to eat with a great atmosphere. I took my husband, my daughter and her husband and three grandkids to this place. Haven't been here in a long time. Our server was Niko he was attentive and so was everybody else. We were in the big room, which I was surprised there were seven of us. The kids enjoyed looking at all the animals and pictures. So my daughter had a Modelo and I had an old fashion, which was just OK. One of the grandsons had chicken Alfredo and he liked it. My daughter and I had Filet mignon. It was perfect. My husband had halibut. He said it was good and my son-in-law had top sirloin. OMG you get soup salad beans salsa potatoes. Then with your dinner, you get rice and bread. I have four containers of leftover +2 of soup. Of course they did have the dessert, a couple had the root beer floats, and some had the Sundays. I was the only one that took the after dinner drink, which was three different liquors. We had a good time and it was reasonably priced. Oh a granddaughter wasn't hungry and she had onion rings, but she didn't really eat them. They looked good though. Amazing dinner! I just visited AJ Spurs for the first time in over a decade during my visit to the Central Coast. I always remembered it was good and popular, but I wondered if my memory was more favorable than it deserved. My memory was correct. Everyone loved their dinners. I ordered the filet. Pleasantly surprised! Was invited here for a birthday dinner, the theme of this restaurant with all its decor is pretty fun. Come here hungry cause you get a lot of food! I decided to try the filet mignon and it was cooked nicely and had good flavor. The fried potatoes were seasoned nicely and fluffy inside. The service wasn't necessarily friendly but efficient. I stumbled upon this place while visiting the Avila Sycamore hot springs. Our hotel is next door. Loved the complimentary beef stew, salsa and beans. The meals also comes with salad. Great value and good quality. We ordered the pork chops and NY strip. Steak was cooked to perfect temperature and flavored nicely. The pork chops were very tender and came with rice and applesauce. Loved the side potatoe and onions as well. The Texas toast was excellent as well. So much food and you even had your choice of dessert or after dinner cocktail. Our server was friendly and prompt. We went to dinner last Saturday, the service was really good. However, the drinks and the food were not good at all. The soup sent out was room temperature and tasted like the Campbells beef soup, tried one bite and didn't eat any after that. I also ordered a Moscow mule and it tasted closer to a lemonade with vodka, didn't even drink half. Lastly our main was bad, both had Filets with rice, fries and the garlic bread. The filets had a weird after taste, like as if they used liquid smoke on them. One was bacon wrapped and the bacon was gray and not cooked. The rice pilaf was hard and lacked flavor. And we only took 2 bites of the garlic bread. Our meal was well over $100 and should have atleast been $40 with how everything tasted. Again, our waiter was awesome however the food was a total let down. Yes it's a cool building, but not worth it at all. read more
