I've always thought of Ajo for lunch and I'm not sure how I missed their great breakfast. On my quest do not continue being judged for disliking eggs, I ordered a Mexican breakfast burrito. Man, that burrito was banging! I really liked the salsa, it complemented the steak and eggs very well. I also got the yogurt with fruit and honey, which was so refreshing for after my workout. The service is really friendly and I would say there is a bit of a wait but it's because your food is being prepped per order. They don't offer any grilled items on Friday so just be mindful if that's what you're looking for. The salads were very good. I particularly enjoyed the bangkok express. The sesame tofu really brought it together. I enjoyed my salads from Ajamo. The salad was good, except the shrimp, which was extremely salty and the herb vinaigrette, sweet (both of which I didn't like). So I ate the salad without them. They have a bunch of unique salads but you can also mix and match to make your own- which is what I do! It's also a healthier alternative when you are looking to grab something quick for lunch at a casual place. The staff here is great. They are very friendly and very accommodating to any changes from the preset menu. Dressings are made fresh and veggies are of very high quality. It's great to be able to get food on the go that is healthy (and delicious) in downtown Hartford. My go to is the Baja which is prob not the healthiest choice of the bunch, but healthier than the crap I had been eating elsewhere. I was a bit disappointed with my chickpea salad. I ordered it with a spicy dressing and the whole salad was just very bland and kind of watery, to be honest. I got the Thai peanut wrap with tofu. The portion was a bit smaller than I was expecting. The flavors in the wrap were a mix of different ones and there was a good mix of veggies but overall kind of bland. I got a spicy dressing too but I didn't really taste the spiceness. Made my first visit to this new place in the food court. It's a nice refreshing change to the places in there. It's a salad place. Make no mistake. But that's fine. Wide variety of ingredients and freshly made in front of you so you can tweak it how you like. Quick and friendly. I had the Kale Caesar and really enjoyed it. Fresh parmesan was a nice touch. The kale could probably have been cut into slightly smaller pieces but otherwise, it was nice and fresh. And it's a much better salad option than, say the It's Only Natural place next to it. So happy Ajamo is back. Salads are of extremely high quality. Homemade dressings are superb. Pricing is reasonable considering what you get. I suppose their are cheaper salads available if you don't mind mass produced dressings and tasteless ingredients. Chris and Jennifer obviously love what they are doing, and it shows. My only "complaints" are the location (downtown Hartford) and the hours/days of operation. If you had a suburban location and were open on weekends, I would probably eat there 5 days a week. This little lunch joint is packed full of flavor! A coworker suggested we try out Ajamo one day and I was in for a surprise. I ordered the "Mighty Aphrodite" with shrimp, and found the "Demi" size to be perfect for lunch - I wasn't hungry after, but I also wasn't overly full. If I were to get a menu option without a protein, I may opt for the larger size. I'll be back to try the "pocket", which I've been told is your salad in a pita (yum!) Here's where they definitely get their 5-Stars. They're allergy protocol is on point! Most of the salads are made assembly-line style, passed from one employee to the next. As soon as you enter the line to order, you can see signs notifying customers about nut products (the signs are easy to see). I began to tell the man taking my order about my allergy and he immediately notified the others in the line (loudly!) and they all began to take their gloves off and put on a new pair. They were cautious when adding ingredients - always checking with me first. It gave me great piece of mind that my food was safe to eat, and the employees cared enough to make it safe for me. They were happy to provide a to-go bag, which was paper. Props to bring environmentally friendly! Averaging about $8-9 for a small size salad (without a drink or side), I don't think Ajamo is an option for everyday, but it's certainly an option on days when you forget to bring a lunch from home and want a healthy option! (PS - Heads up to Check in on Yelp!! Ajamo offers a free fountain drink when you do your check-in! Wonderful unique selection of salads, with plenty of options for vegetarians like me. We had a good earth salad and a Thai tofu one. The owners really go out of their way to make the meal just the way you want it. My customization requests were all welcomed and I did not mind they realized they had run out of tofu and had to be substituted with other ingredients of my choice. This is an outstanding restaurant inside the State House Square in downtown Hartford. In fact, I'd say it's the best one there. The focus is on healthy food, mostly salads of various types, but that's not a limitation as there's such a variety I can't imagine anyone looking at the menu and not finding something appealing. They also have soups that are very tasty, and some bowls too. Every day they seem to have a special as well. The food prep area also has the appearance of being extremely clean and well kept, and the staff seems to focus well on cleanliness also. I believe this is a husband/wife owned business who seem to be doing this for a while, even though this restaurant is only a couple years old. Extra props to them for employing mostly minorities as well, and keeping the same staff for some time and training them well, which helps keep mistakes to a bare minimum. read more

This is my go-to lunch spot during the week! Everyone is so friendly, and I go there enough that they know my order by now! They have a rewards system that captures the same card you use, and I get $9 off if I go there enough times! (Sorry, not sure of the exact details) but this is a nice incentive if you go as much as I do. They have the freshest ingredients in my opinion, and LOTS of options- anyone with dietary restrictions wouldn't have a hard time finding something. They also offer pita or fresh bread with your salad if that's your thang. Fresh iced tea is always brewed and they also have a delicious fresh rotating soup selection! The salad I got instead was really good and I love that their dressings are dairy free. Their diet soda is also sweetened with stevia instead of aspartame. Thank you Yelp for bringing this spot to my attention! It is in the Statehouse Square food court in Downtown Hartford, in the old Moo Yah spot. After the previous reviews, I was very excited to scope out a new vegan friendly eatery! The ordering style is like Subway or Moe's, and they were very well staffed. Every single person I spoke with (4 to be exact) were very relaxed, friendly and helpful. I told them it was my first time, and I would like a vegan item. The initial greeter asked another employee to help me, because she was vegan. She recommended a grain bowl, which sounded great, but I opted for a Bangkok Express Salad, with sesame ginger baked tofu, romaine, cabbage, avocado, green onion, carrot, celery, rice vermicelli, spicy Thai peanut dressing & sriracha. And it was amazing! They ask you how much dressing, and toss it. A good size portion for $10. Any salad can be made into a wrap, or you can build your own salad or wrap, with a greens base and 4 toppings included. And so many interesting dressings to choose from! And they also have soups, which I will look forward to trying in the coming colder months. And the best part, they code everything with dietary needs (Gluten Free,Peanuts,Tree Nuts, Vegetarian, Vegan), and post the calories. Online ordering coming soon! I am usually a little wary of salad places, because since nothing is cooked, it seems like an easy way to spread germs. This place has my full confidence though. I went there today for the first time (although my husband eats there regularly) and was throughly impressed. The food was delicious and the staff was great. Super knowledgeable (I mean, you have to be pretty well-trained to be able to describe the relative merits of Romaine vs Arugula), helpful, and really friendly. All three men who were working gave the impression that making salads is their life passion and they can not believe their good fortune that they get to do so all day long. Ajamo recently opened in the SHS Food Court and I stopped by for lunch on Friday, 8/21. I was greeted at the start of the line by a woman who handed me a menu and asked if I had been there before. When I said that I had not, she welcomed me and asked for any feedback -- especially if I *didn't* like my salad. I looked through the menu and chose the Baja salad with portobello mushrooms. I was surprised when the employee took the to-go salad bowl and stuffed it full of veggies; he was extremely generous and filled the bowl to its brim. Everyone behind the counter greeted me (some had been prior employees at Moe's and recognized me), and when my bowl reached the end of the line, they poured all of the contents into a big mixing bowl, put the dressing on and shook it up before stuffing it back into my to-go bowl. They also included a small slice of baguette. Imagine my shock when my total cost was less than $10. At our company's cafe, we have salad bowls about the same size, and a conservative salad, filling it about halfway, comes to about the same price as this overstuffed bowl. But, really, who cares about price or quantity? It's the taste that matters, and the Baja salad did not disappoint. I forgot to ask for no onions (my fault!) but was really impressed anyway. The leafy greens - other veggies ratio was good, with a forkful of leaf including lots of other veggies with each bite. I look forward to seeing what soup options they have on rotation and what other salads they come up with, and will slowly but surely make my way through this menu. I'm obsessed with this place, I talk it up all the time! I probably talk about it more often than I eat there, because the lunch hours are so tight - 11am-2:15pm M-F. I use Ajamo salad as a "treat" for myself when I'm at school during those hours (4x/year, probably). Friendly staff, good size bowls, a bit expensive for regular consumption but not outrageous. Came here after spending a long morning in Hartford and so happy that I did. This place serves some of the best and most freshest foods Ive tasted while being in CT. Ajamo's breaks the stereotype of healthy foods: the food had so much flavor. I love the staff there-they are very friendly and mske you feel so welcomed.
