1st time to Aji smithtown, bayshore our home base... Apps were tasty as always, we had blue crab fajita and fried oysters which we're awesome!!! My wife also had the california roll which was amazing!! The salad was ok, bayshore does it better which it is more fresh, crisp and ice cold! i had chicken hibachi and my wife had the filet mignon entree which both were excellent!!! We both feel that the bayshore location has a much better vibe and service is a little better! This location the waitress made it feel rushed. We had a variety of appetizers: edamame, coconut shrimp, calamari and veggie gyoza. The gyoza were average, the edamame and calamari were good, and the shrimp were awesome. I had the Monster Roll, which was delicious, and had just the right amount of heat. At ~$15/roll, it's not cheap though. If you're looking for a stripped down, good sushi with all the classics, try Benten in Miller Place. read more

I'm a total n00b regarding sushi, but quickly becoming a full-blown addict. Aji53, you're definitely an enabler - and I thank you for it! Stopped by for lunch (their website states they open at noon, but on the door they have a sign saying 11:30/weekdays now - good news!) and found a trendy, clean interior. I personally can't stand the club-like atmosphere sushi restaurants seem to trend towards, but they had the music turned down low and I was easily able to read while eating. Vegetable gyoza were delicious - slightly fried skins to give them enough crispness, quality soy sauce to waterboard them in, and they came out of the kitchen in no time. I had the Bay Shore roll, which is pretty simple, but managed to hit the spot. In my first experience eating Aji (delivery at work - more on that later) I opted for the Angel roll: for the extra $2, upgrade upgrade upgrade! The tobikos and eel/truffle-balsamic sauce made it truly angelic, and the contrast between the crunchy tuna vs smooth avocado paired with those tiny bubbles of salt from the tobikos made it possibly my favorite roll I've had yet. The ordering for take-out was a little tedious in my particular case. I guess they computerize their phone orders for future-easy-processing, so be ready to provide exact info (I didn't know the address of the hospital I work at, when we order it's usually just "** ******** hospital, ******** department") and the people on the other end take it from there), but if you're at home - you should hopefully not have the same problem with knowing your own address........ Service was friendly, not-overbearing, but at no point was I asked the standard "how is everything with your meal?" question. I don't mind this, since almost 99% of the time I am asked that at the exact moment I have a mouthful of food. However, I could see how someone who expects to be asked this could be put-off by the absence. read more

Ordered my favorite drink, "We'll Always Have Paris" thanks to a fellow Yelpers tip about how this drink is no longer on the menu but you can still order it. Awesome!! Ate edamame and rock shrimp tempura for appetizer, both very good. Ordered the Christmas roll, spider roll, and a third roll but I forgot which one! All three rolls were excellent! On an island where sushi places have become nearly as common as pizzerias, the need for perfection is paramount to success. Aji 53 has nailed it. Ordering only from the waiter's and chef's recommendations, my sashimi dinner was absolutely fantastic. The most fresh, well prepared, and beautifully presented fish that I have been served in quite some time in a standalone sushi restaurant. The best item of the night was a Golden Red Snapper - the entire snapper was served on the plate with the meat artfully removed and sliced beside the standing, visually reanimated body of the fish. Almost equally as good was a plate of Spanish Mackerel lightly coated in a ginger wasabi sauce and garnished with micro-greens. Typically a more oily slice of sashimi, the mackerel at Aji 53 was buttery soft and flavorful. With a few sprouts mixed i n on every third bite or so, the texture was also balanced out. Aji 53 has easily become the new choice for outstanding sushi at the right price on Long Island. read more

I am came here when I was in town visiting my family for my mom's 50th birthday. The rest of my family doesn't deviate from Italian and American fare ever, so coming to a Japanese restaurant was a bit of a risk. When I say that they never eat Japanese food, I really mean it, as questions such as "What is miso soup?" and "What's in a California roll?" were asked. Anyway, the decor of this place is just outstanding. It has those blue lights by the bar, but somehow doesn't come across as tacky. The dining room is large and fairly spread out. There was also a surprisingly good band playing when we came in (Sunday evening) that provided nice background music, but were not too loud that you couldn't comfortably talk to each other. The waiter was very patient and friendly in dealing with my culturally deficient parents, explaining the various selections on the menu and offering suggestions for those who weren't sure what they wanted. After some miso soup and seaweed salad for appetizers (it's pretty hard to screw those up!) we ordered our main dishes. My brother and I got the American Dream special rolls, which are rock shrimp tempura inside topped with spicy lobster & spicy kani served with spicy creamy sauce. We both LOVED them, the sauce was especially delightful. My mom ordered the filet Mignon, which was cooked absolutely perfectly. My dad ordered the sea bass and proclaimed it the best he's ever had. My other brother ordered the Koo specialty roll, which includes tuna avocado, crab meat, lobster tempura and mango sauce. This is probably the first time I've ever actually seen him finish his food, so that is certainly saying something. We got two tempura ice cream dishes for dessert, and imagine our surprise when a third one was brought out with a candle for my mom. We all looked at each other to see who had planned it, but it turned out no one had. My mom had apparently mentioned it was her birthday when she made the reservation, and they remembered and brought us an extra tempura ice cream for her on the house. Overall, a great experience. We had gone out for a fancy Italian dinner the night before (hey, the 5-0 is a big deal!) but we all agreed that we enjoyed this dinner more even though it was half the price. After another visit last night, my original review is still accurate. Same issue with service being too fast and people dressing like they came from the beach. Sashimi will always be a mystery to me...how can raw fish be so much better in one place than another? My son and I shared the sushi/sashimi for 2 and the variety was terrible. Everything was repeated...there was mackerel sashimi and mackerel sushi, etc, etc. Boring! The flavor and texture of the fish was ok...not great. It's really a shame because I really want to love Aji53 because it's practically in my backyard...but I don't. I will drive farther next time to my favorite place. read more

Do not understand what all the fuss of this place is about. Atmosphere is decent for a date, seating is way too close together though. Cheesy round mirrors reminded me of a school bus. Really do not like the plastic chop sticks I believe they wash and reuse like forks, nasty. California rolls have imitation crab meat , nasty. The sushi and presentation is not above and beyond any other sushi place on LI, I would say average or a notch below. Service was very lacking the highlight was the Miso Cute t hirts, but the service left me Miso Disappointed. Overall decent place for a date and some sushi, would prefer Sweet Mandarin any day over this. If anyone is ever in San Diego try Sushi Freak you will be pleasantly surprised. read more

It's nearly impossible to order a bad roll or sashimi here. The fish is fresh, the selection is creative and the presentation is beautiful. Unfortunately, I was disappointed that the bok choy was so severely oily and under seasoned. It irks me when an Asian fusion restaurant turns a vegetable plate into a heap of soaking leaves. It also bothers me when a restaurant presents their food in large plates without regard to the width and length of the table, but that's not a reason not to return. Maybe, next time I'll come with a larger party and take advantage of the spacious booths. And I'll be sure to tell them to go easy on the oil. read more

Made a reservation here last night and when I got there, it was nowhere to be found. Interesting because it took 5 minutes for the person on the phone to get the spelling of my name correct. In any event, the nice girls at the desk were accommodating and got us seated promptly. The service was good, even if he couldn't remember what we ordered - the days of servers not writing down orders should be done with...I'd rather they get it right. I had the salmon avocado roll, Tokyo roll and something called American Dream roll (I think that was the name). Everything was fresh and delicious. The decor was typical of the sushi restaurants that I've been to: dark with a lot of neon lights. The crowd was a mix of dates, Real Housewives wanna be's and the table behind us were a bunch of rowdy people in their late 50's who probably don't get out much. The lunch special is 6 pieces per roll, not the usual 8 so do not get overly excited if you order 10 rolls thinking they are the regular size. The Lunch Special is Mon - Fri 11am - 3pm 3 rolls for $11 with soup or salad, you cannot beat that for quality sushi. If you are a sushi advocate and want to expand your options there is also Tomo within walking distance next to Napper Tandys on main street, you cannot miss it. read more

If I could I'd give Aji 53 3.5 stars. Its above average, but far from the best I've had on the Island. Slow service and uncomfortably loud house music make for a below average experience. On the plus side, they have a nice bar to grab a few cocktails at , and more importantly the sushi is pretty good. (I'd recommend the Snow Flake and Aji King Rolls). Definitely worth a shot. We'll be going back for a second round for sure...perhaps on a less busy evening though. read more

I must admit, I'm nervous about Sushi. I had a couple of bad experiences in my youth and I've avoided eating it like the plague. I was outvoted by a group of co-workers to come here and I figured I could always eat the tempura to "be safe." Thankfully, a co-worker of mine told me to trust him and let him order. I re-iterated that I didn't want to eat anything that wasn't cooked....again, I was told to trust him. First dish to hit the table, Spicy Tuna Sashimi, which is sliced tuna, and yes, it's raw, with jalapenos. Everybody except me tried it....everyone ranted and raved....I popped one in my mouth and was suprised as how incredibly delicious it was. I ate two! Then, the signature rolls made their way out. Valentine roll, Snowflake roll, Paradise roll, Twister roll, and a salmon roll. Two of these are "cooked," but I didn't care anymore. Every single one of these that I tried was absolutely delicious. In an instant, Aji 53 has become one of my favorite restaurants and I'm already chomping at the bit to get back. Oh, the ambiance, at least on a Thursday night at 9pm was fairly quiet. The staff is incredibly attentive and helpful and make you feel like you're definitely a VIP. Highly recommended, especially if you're nervous about enjoying a sushi experience. Sigh. I took my brother and his wife here tonight, thinking it would be a good time. The atmosphere was lovely, and the host was pleasant. I can't speak very far beyond that, though. We started with vegetable gyoza, kani salad, and warm mushroom salad. The portions were reasonable, maybe a little on the small side, for a sushi restaurant. The food itself was good. Not great, but good. After that, we got a few rolls and a tempura udon. Again, the food was decent, but nothing to call home about. We finished with two desserts, the fried Oreos and the Raspberry Bomb. Fairly tasty, honestly. The food is totally three to four stars. I'll give it that. But the service was really lacking. Our server spoke way too softly, and when he was audible, he chewed a lot of his words. I honestly don't know what he said half the time. We often went fifteen, twenty minutes without being addressed at all. The dessert probably took half an hour to come out. He made some remark about having to go to Stop 'n Shop to get the Oreos. I couldn't tell if that was supposed to be a joke or not (see above), but if it was, it certainly didn't land with any of us. Prices were average. Food was run of the mill. Service was exceptionally slow, and a little off. I don't know if there were issues in the back of the house that held up everything, or if they were just really short-staffed (there was plenty of staff, but from what I can tell, there was one waiter and a lot of back waiters/bussers/people running around without actually taking orders). I'm a little reluctant to give the benefit of the doubt, though, given how much standing around I saw various members of the staff (our server included) doing. We spent over two hours there, and I really don't know why it wound up being that long. Get takeout if you really want to try the place. read more

I live near the Bayshore location, but stopped going there because I got bad takeout once which turned me off. However, being in Smithtown a lot for work I decided to give this location a chance. I just go there for lunch because the lunch specials are great. I order the sashimi, it's good but not the best. Good for Long Island I guess though. However, the server Richard is such a great guy and keeps us coming back. He's very attentive, and always recommends something good if you want to try something different. The food at Aji53 is VERY good! 6 of my friends and I visited last night for a dinner before I head back to school. As it was a Monday night, it was very slow, and they had no problem accommodating our party. We all ordered appetizers which came out relatively quickly - I ordered the pork gyoza which was DELICIOUS! I also tried some of the rock shrimp appetizer which was very tasty, and the edamame were standard. For my entree, I had the Paradise Roll, one of their speciality rolls. I wouldn't recommend it. The fried banana inside was overpowering. A roll like this wouldn't usually be my order but I was looking for something easy on my stomach, getting over a virus. The service overall wasn't the fastest, which is why I took off a star. Relatively affordable for sushi/Japanese, and very tasty food! read more

The sashimi lunch was really tiny. It was two tiny slivers if sashimi x4. So basically 4 pieces of sashimi for lunch. I had to order rice because it didn't come with it and 4 pieces of sashimi isn't enough for lunch! Rice was extra. The salad was also tiny and did not have traditional ginger sauce. It was a creamy sauce. A hot towel would have been nice to start too but wasn't offered, no towel offered . Very disappointed for $15 lunch "special". They serve a delicious filet mignon that was tender and full of flavor. It's sliced Asian-style though, so don't expect the steakhouse kind (one thick piece), and you won't be disappointed. Would return here just to have the filet again. Unfortunately, the Truffle White Tuna wasn't as fresh as Kumo's. Their sashimi was like any other popular sushi joint on Long Island, not bad, but nothing spectacular either. And the (red) "sweet" cocktail recommendation I got tasted like medicine. In fact, now I feel kind of weird giving a sushi restaurant 4-stars just for a good steak dish, so I guess I technically give it a 3.5 but I'll round up because that's how much I love that steak! read more

Loved this place! Had the duck salad as an appetizer which was delicious! Also, had the sweet potato roll and shrimp tempura roll as an entree. It was good, average sushi, I would say because you can't go wrong with these two rolls. The customer service was great, the waitress was nice. But the fried ice cream didn't taste as good as I wanted it to be. It was the first time my boyfriend tried it and he did not like it. I would come back here again but only for the appetizers and sushi rolls, not so much the dessert. The place was romantic, I like the lighting in the restaurant. Today was a super winner. I ordered the "Maki B" platter and am always picky about eel. It was surprisingly my favorite roll on the plate, on top of the rolls I usually call my favorites. Haven't given a review in a while, we do frequent this location and it never disappoints! Today my husband and I came with an appetite and tried several rolls together. All of them were delicious, not one of them were a miss, at all. We tried the Sunshine roll, the Smithtown roll which includes some filet mignon, the New Year, the Magic roll and a regular smaller roll with King Crab, five stars for all of them. So much flavor, everything so fresh and crisp, what an adventure for one's mouth! I recommend all of the rolls we tried. I had the Kiss Me Toni to drink, it's pretty decent although not my favorite. For dessert we shared the Hazelnut truffle which is basically Hazelnut ice cream, the flavor was soft yet rich, very tasty. Everything was wonderful as always, love this place! read more

To sit, they also charged us for something we never got, half our party had to leave early because one person didn't even receive his food until 20 minutes after everyone else we didn't have the time due to being sat late, we will not return. read more

I tried sushi for the first time ever here, so my review might be a little too complimentary, but the rolls I had here were absolutely delicious! I had the American Dream Roll and the Paradise Roll (see the menu on their website for all the ingredients), and both tasted unique and extremely fresh. The decor was super chic, which I'm a sucker for, and the service was outstanding; granted it was a week night and not very busy, but none the less, we were waited on hand and foot.
