I'll start by saying that I live on the Newton line of Waltham. Waltham is really devoid of a good sushi (or sushi that I feel safe eating) which is what brings me to Newtonville. I will be honest in saying that it's not my favorite place to eat in because of the poor acoustics. It can get very loud and the ambiance isn't bad, but it does leave something to be desired. As far as sushi goes, I think its really quite good. My experience is that the food is fresh and delicious. I recently had the Sashimi deluxe for take out and I thought it was outstanding. Really yummy and decent value to book. My sweetie is vegetarian and they have some nice veg sushi options too. Service here is fine, everyone is friendly. Give them a shot! read more

Great sushi place that has delivery! Fresh sushi every time and has great spicy avocado salad. I always get the steak teriyaki - the sauce is amazing! Wait time is usually between 5-10 minutes. I created a Yelp account just to leave this review. I just had the best dining experience OF MY LIFE at Aji. We started off with the Crazy Maki and the Caterpillar rolls and were already so happy. And then my life changed. The Volcano Roll was the absolute best sushi I have ever tasted in my entire life. It is my death row last meal. If I could I would eat The Volcano for the rest of my life. I wish I had been alone so I didn't have to share one bite of its goodness. Eating the cheesy, scallopy remnants with a spicy tuna and a spicy salmon roll really just made my entire life worthwhile. I just moved to the area and was craving sashimi. I ordered delivery from Aji online, but had some technical difficulties. I would recommend calling to confirm your order if you use the online system (because you can easily order w a credit card that way) or just calling to order delivery and skipping the online system. Also, delivery only starts at 5pm, so if you want lunch you'll have to pick it up. They clearly felt badly about the mix-up, though, and quickly got my order delivered to me. I'm a regular for Aji for take out. The sushi rolls are good but quite small. It is bit on the pricey side but the sushi is always consistent. It's great for a take out dinner for myself but I wouldnt go in with my family for dinner considering the prices and limited menu options. read more

What's a place this good doing in Newtonville? It does classic sushi as well as any place in Boston. I've been here a bunch of times and always found it terrific. Looking around at other tables, I believe most of the volume is sushi but when I've tried some of their cooked dishes they were terrific too including a very yummy tender duck with crispy skin served with side of sweet/sour sauce. The entire experience was fantastic! From the conscientious service to the quality of the food - it really made our night. My first reaction when we step in was how nicely the place was decorated. Bamboos nicely accent the place anchored by the bold red and yellow walls. The place is not too big so it offers a nice intimate dining experience. There were more than enough servers at Aji's to make us feel special - even the owner took his time to come to our table before our ordering (made excellent recommendations) and after to thank us and follow-up on our experience. We felt that really put an exclamation mark on the type of restaurant Aji is. We ordered quite a bit of food: We started out with a seaweed salad and Salmon and Hamachi sashimi. Then we tried a series of maki presentations. The first was The Princess Maki, followed by a Torched Salmon Roll, Snow Mountain Maki and lastly a Caterpillar Maki. All the maki rolls had a clean and appealing presentation. The two that stood out were the princess maki and the snow mountain special. The snow mountain maki we had was a slight variation from the menu. Instead of crab meat, we had shrimp tempura inside the maki roll. Aji serves the tastiest sushi of the places we go to and makes a beautiful presentation of the meals. The tuna maki melts in your mouth. Exotic rolls with shrimp or salmon tempura are delicious. The Spicy Calamari appetizer is tender and spiked with fresh jalapeños and red onion - we order it every time. I work basically next door to this place, so I usually end up getting lunch about every two weeks here. I am not especially adventurous, so my order is the same every time- the teriyaki steak lunch special. It's amazing. Yes, it costs a little bit more than somebody might usually pay for lunch at say, the KFC across the street, but you get so much food with it. The steak is a nice cut, cooked to order, and it comes in a great teriyaki sauce with veggies and white rice. Along with that comes miso soup and a garden salad with ginger dressing. You can easily make two meals out of it, which makes the price worth it to me. The people there are really nice. When I ate in, the ambiance was nice. They seem to always be playing the Final Fantasy X piano soundtrack when I go in, but that's okay because only a nerd like me would know that. read more

I've lived in Newton for most of my life and there hasn't been a decent sushi place to eat by my house until Aji. I wouldn't go as far to say it's the very best sushi I've ever eaten, but it's good when compared to Genki Ya in Brookline and O Ya in Boston. O Ya's sushi is a bit too "busy" for me, but then again, this review isn't for O Ya so I won't get into that. I've gone to Aji about 15 times now in the past year and I have to say that their sushi quality and service is very consistent. I've read some review about sushi that wasn't fresh, the portion size was small, or the service was slow. They have been having an off day or maybe training a new waiter/waitress. In any case, I've ordered a variety of appetizers and sushi dishes there and I haven't been disappointed yet. If you plan on going and like wasabi, I highly recommend the wasabi shrimp appetizer. It is amazing! The fried oyster and gyoza are also very good. For sushi, the crispy mango spicy tuna maki (or something like that), alligator roll, and snow mountain maki are great. If you have a sweet tooth, which I do, try the chocolate, mango or coconut ribieno. My personal favorite is the chocolate, which tastes more like dark chocolate. =) read more
