Love it. I use to go to the one in Scottsdale many years ago. It's just as I remember. The steak fajita was delicious, flavorful and hot. My wife and I really enjoyed it. Bianca was our server and she was very attentive and took great care of us. One suggestion - it was very bright, the ceiling lights could have been dimmed about 3 clicks. I'll just start with, I was really excited for this new Mexican restaurant to pop up. After waiting for the initial hype to die down, I decided to order the chicken fajitas family catering meal with rice, beans and tortillas. Plus a cheese crisp for the folks in the house that can consume dairy. I placed the ordered with instructions for no cheese on anything and the beans came with cheese topped. The two absolute areas that were not great was the lack of chicken in my fajitas. It was 95% peppers and onions. Understanding the economy is in a bad spot, and protein is more expensive, but it was only enough chicken for maybe 2, if that. The cheese crisp was flat and wasnt even crispy despite asking for extra crispy. My $73 "family meal" was basically peppers, onions, beans and rice - plus fancy catering boxes. First time here and I was excited to find a restaurant that offers potato tacos! They were delicious! My three friends enjoy their Mexican pizza, and burrito bowl. They had a $2 spicy margarita (jalapeno infused tequila) special which lit my friend's mouth on fire (but my friend is a wimp when it comes to spice so don't let it deter you). Ajo Als offers a nice selection for both vegetarians and carnivores. Service was mediocre but the manager was quit pleasant and seemed willing to get his hands dirty to help out. We made a reservation because we didn't know what to expect. I called to make it and the gentleman was so nice, agreeable and helpful. Arrived at 6:00 on a Friday. The place was hopping, but we were immediately seated. A carafe of ice water and warm chips with salsa appeared and we were greeted quickly. We loved the salsa. It had just a little spice/perfect. We ordered the trio of dips... omg. Soooo good! The guac was garlicky /just how I like it. We got shrimp and steak fajitas. They have excessive veggies! The steak wasn't great. It was pretty chewy. The only negative of the meal. The rice.... Soooo good! The service could not have been better. Her name was Ava! She was so sweet and attentive. She kept refilling my iced tea and our chips! We were too full for desserts but they sounded great! All in all we loved our meal. We will be back. read more

We have been patrons of Ajo Al's Biltmore location but was very excited when they opened this east valley location. The food and service was excellent! We walked in and the bar side to the left, restaurant to the right. Friendly greeting when we walked in. Our table was clean and chips and salsa was yummy. Highly recommend their guacamole! She was very friendly and attentive by checking on me and refilling my drink before it was empty. This was my second visit to this new restaurant location. My first visit didn't go well. I did a yelp review giving 2 stars and the owner responded and gave me a gift card to come back and give them another try. So my wife and mother went with me today. Service was great . Callie K was our server. Very pleasant . Food was So MUCH BETTER! I ordered the burrito bowl , my wife ordered the Flautas, and my mom ordered just a side of rice and a side of beans. My wife and I also ordered a margarita . We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch. It seems my first visit was during their opening and they must have worked out the issues. We definitely will return. We have patiently been waiting for Ajo Al's on the east side to open and have been fans for years of their other locations. The food was delicious. I got the pollo con queso and it was enough for two meals. Chips and salsa were wonderful as well and were refilled without asking the second we were running low. Unfortunately, this visit paled compared to our last visit. We had a free appetizer coupon so we ordered a cheese crisp which took so long our food came out at the same time. The person that brought it out said here is your extra crispy cheese crisp. We didn't order extra crispy so he took it back so they could make a new one. The new one came out burnt on the bottom. This same person was supposed to bring out more water and the hot salsa but he forgot and never did. The server was nice and attentive but he forgot to give us our scratch card. I had the quesabirria tacos and for sides beans and calabasitas... unfortunately I forgot to snap a photo of the sides, but the entire meal was delicious, flavorful and the portions were generous. The tacos tasted authentic and paired perfectly with the Paloma I ordered, which was served in a cute cantarito cup. We started with chips and salsa, and ended with fried ice cream topped with strawberries. The portion was enormous ... definitely a dessert meant for sharing! My husband and I lived in downtown Phoenix for years and were frequent visitors to the Ajo Al's location on 16th Street. So you can imagine our excitement when we saw a new location open on Baseline in Gilbert now that we live on this side of town. First, the restaurant itself is beautiful. The décor is well done, the atmosphere is inviting, and it has a great overall vibe. Our waitress was friendly when she first greeted us and asked if we had dined at Ajo Al's before. We happily told her that we're big fans of the 16th Street location. We started with drinks and chips. The Hawaiian Margarita was absolutely delicious, and the chips and salsa were just as good as we remembered. For our entrées, my husband ordered the steak fajitas and I ordered the chicken fajitas. When the meals arrived, the portion sizes were generous and the food itself was very good. However, both fajita plates came with only one set of toppings (sour cream, cheese) for us to share and only one tortilla per person. When I asked our waitress if that was standard, she looked at me like I was crazy and said, "Yes, but I can get you more if you want." We requested additional tortillas, but it took nearly 10 minutes for them to arrive. My husband didn't want to wait and ended up eating most of his fajitas with a fork. As someone who works as a VP in food service, I would want to know if this is the experience guests are having. The portions are excellent, but there is simply no way an entire fajita entrée fits into a single tortilla. Additionally, most guests don't want to share condiments and toppings with another person at the table. The food was good, the drinks were great, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. I think a small adjustment to the fajita presentation, providing enough tortillas and individual toppings for each guest, would significantly improve the overall experience. read more

I visited Ajo Al's Mexican Cafe expecting a decent night out, but instead got a bar atmosphere that felt completely unmanaged. The staff allowed foul-mouthed patrons to sit at the bar barefoot while loudly cursing throughout the restaurant. It created an uncomfortable and unprofessional environment that honestly felt trashy rather than welcoming. There's a difference between a casual neighborhood spot and a place that simply ignores basic standards of cleanliness and customer conduct. Management should have stepped in immediately, but instead appeared perfectly fine with it. If this is considered acceptable behavior, then I guess this is what you should expect from an establishment in Mesa. Very disappointing experience, and not somewhere I would recommend if you expect even minimal standards for atmosphere and customer etiquette. read more

The restaurant and atmosphere is nice as it is brand new. 3 out of 4 people at our table really enjoyed our food. We had a cheese crisp, guacamole, birria street tacos, chimichanga and a variety of other tacos. However, y'all need to ditch the big metal platter the chips were on. It took up too much of the table and we did not have enough room with 4 people there. On top of that, you put a small handful of chips on it that took up 1/4 of the platter. We had to ask for chips like every 5 minutes even though we also gotten guacamole which also requires more chips. Seriously, 4 people require more than 12 chips at a time. The last thing I want to do is pay over $5 per small street taco and then have to arm wrestle you for more chips. read more

I really wanted to love Ajo Al's. We've been twice now, mainly because it's so close to our house and the location is very convenient. The restaurant itself looks great. The aesthetic is clean, inviting, and well done. It feels like a place you want to come back to. Unfortunately, the food just hasn't matched that same level. At best, it's been average both times. I tried the steak fajitas on our first visit, and the meat was quite tough. On our second visit, I ordered the chicken fajitas, and while the chicken was better, it still didn't stand out. Overall, the flavor and quality just haven't met expectations, especially for the price point. There are several other local Mexican restaurants nearby that offer better food for the same or even less money, which makes it harder to justify coming back right now. Service was okay on our first visit and improved the second time, which is encouraging. I understand this is a newer restaurant, and I'm confident that side will continue to improve quickly. My biggest hope is that the kitchen takes a step forward. With such a great location and atmosphere, this place has a lot of potential. I truly want to love this restaurant and make it a regular spot, but the food needs to improve to make it worth the visit. read more

I went to Ajo Al's years ago when I lived in Scottsdale. Loved it and was so excited to see the new location in Mesa. I will definitely be back because I know newer restaurants are always working out the kinks. When I went to drink out of my glass, it was dirty. An employee walking by had several clean glasses in his hands that he was going to place at another table. I asked for a new cup because mine was dirty. He went to give me a glass, but then he saw they were all dirty, as well, and said he'd be back with a clean cup. We ordered the trio appetizer. It was really good! When the waitress brought me a plate to use, it was also dirty (still had cheese on it and some smudges). I think they have a dishwasher issue. I ordered the pollo con queso, which I usually live in the Scottsdale location. Unfortunately, the chimi did not taste right and could not eat it. There was something very off. Too much salt? The was an odd flavor for sure. My daughter wanted me to bring her a beef burro ala carte, so I ordered one. The waitress asked if I wanted red or green sauce. I said red sauce. When I got the bill, they charged me $2.50 for the red sauce?? When I inquired, the waitress said that was strange, but her system requires a sauce choice so it was going to charge me. She apologized. Overall, a disappointing first visit, but, they've only been open a month so let's hope it only gets better from here. read more

Service was not the best. Very nice, but was very green. This will get better over time I'm sure. The food on the other hand was the worst Mexican food I have ever had. First the Cheese, Crisp. I'm wondering, whose idea it was to double layer the tortilla. Top layer was crispy and looked delicious. Bottom layer was damp undercooked and chewy. Absolutely disgusting and inedible. Steak fajitas: the meat quality was very low. More fat than meat and no real flavor. And then margaritas. Prickly pear margarita absolutely disgusting, terrible. Mango Chamoy margarita. Completely undrinkable. I feel like they put half the bottle of Chamoy in it. That one was so bad it was sent back for a regular Hause margarita. That one also was disgusting and couldn't drink it either. Really had high hopes for a new Mexican restaurant as I love Mexican food. I don't see this place lasting if they don't make some drastic changes. It's going to be very hard to go back and give it another try. Maybe in 6 months. read more

Sow glad this new location popped up in our neighborhood. I used to work near the other one in Scottsdale and always found the food delicious but service often mediocre. But this new neighborhood favorite has both great food and very friendly staff. Melissa took great care of us and made sure to fully explain a few questions we had about gluten free items for my husband's allergy. Kind and helpfull. We were celebrating hus great uncle Lou's 88th bday, and everyone had a blast.
