Came here for anniversary dinner. Definitely returning. Service was spectacular. Food was delicious. The salmon crab crudo, OMG! The mentaiko mazemen, YUM! Crispy rice spicy salmon, dragon roll, yellow tail carpaccio, delicious. Ambiance was simple, well lit - didn't have to bust out the flashlight to see the menu! Small restaurant so make reservations or come early otherwise there will be a wait that is well worth it. Looking forward to bringing the fam here! They can accommodate larger parties but call ahead! 3.2/5 Food- I appreciate the attention to detail for the chirashi rice. Most places have the rice super hot and poorly cooked. This place they not only seasoned the rice but also chilled it for 5-10 min. This lower temperature complements the sashimi. Sashimi was decent however not outstanding or memorable. Service- I went in around opening hour, the staff was nice but seemed exhausted to be there. Ambiance- modern, clean, and intimate. Parking- small lot. came here after the water lantern festival with my gf and ended up super filled. we got the sushi premium set, which consisted of 12 pieces of nigiri and a tuna roll along with a few side dishes. I wish we were given what 12 pieces of Nigiri we ended up with. but we didn't as service lacked and it was not on the menu. however, the fish and food were so good and fresh. The tuna literally melted in our mouths, and I can confidently say that this was one of my favorite sushi spots. we also got the uni pasta or the Uni Mazemen with an additional charge of Uni on top. We thought it was super tasteful and pretty rich. Defiantly good to fill us up. we then got the salmon crab truffle Crudo which was my favorite dish of the night. The crab filling and salmon literally melted in your mouth, and it was so flavorful. You can taste the truffle sauce and the caviar on top made it taste more of an earthy fishy mature flavor which made it a 10/10. We got the live oak roll which had fried scallops on top. It was a pretty solid roll nothing too out of the ordinary. There are a few things to know, the waitlist status took significantly longer than expected and ended up getting seated 45 minutes rather than 15 minutes - 30 minutes which is not their fault as it is a smaller restaurant. Another thing was the service. After we placed our order, it was nonexistent. They didn't ask us how our food was, didn't check up on us, nor did they refill our waters until I had to flag them down and asked them for a water refill, and the check. For that it brought my experience down half a star. Overall food was amazing, service was eh-, and the ambiance of the restaurant was nice (omakase bar style). 9/10 read more

We've been to Akami many times. We love their Sushi Dinner Set. Fresh fish and decent portion. We finally got to tried the Omakase dinner. Instead of serving piece by piece, it was served plate style, which I don't mind. They said the meal would take about 1.5-2 hours. Which I thought was kinda long but It actually took about 1hr 15mins. Which was perfect. Make reservation on yelp if you want to do the omakase to avoid waiting. Eventhough the place is not quite spacious, the set-up made it comfortable enough even in a busy Friday evening. I really loved the Kaisen and the wifey adored and drooled over the baked salmon and crab roll. Will definitely come back and try the rest of the omakase and their carpaccios. It takes a lot to truly wow me with sushi. The traditional stuff is good, but sometimes if a slight twist is executed well, the end result is just *chefs kiss*. Akami is truly unmatched in terms of quality of fish, combination of flavors, aesthetics and cost. Our servers were also super attentive and nice. At least for my personal experience during weekend lunch, we had bar seating but didn't feel rushed. Uni mazemen (4.5/5): I've had my fair share of uni pastas but this one hits different. The umami uni flavor really penetrates and coats each and every individual noodle. Paired with the delicious burst of salt from the ikura, the combination is just right. Crab chawanmushi (4/5): this one is a little on the expensive side but I think it's worth a try. The egg is not overdone and it feels very flavored. The touch of sweetness from the crab goes very well with the savory truffle oil. Bluefin tuna and burrata (5/5): something quite experimental but shockingly works very well!!! I would get this again without hesitation. The cheese isn't overpowering because it's paired with a slight sweetness from the honey drizzled on top. It sounds blasphemous for sushi, I know, but don't knock it until you try it. Sashimi deluxe set (5/5): pretty good bang for your buck. There's a variety of different fishes that are fresh, and one particular standout for me was the scallop and cucumber paired with some black pepper and yuzu - perfect bite that has me salivating thinking about it. Also liked the fried lotus root, negitoro and tamago. Good amount of food for one person as well since the sets come with miso soup and side dishes (the tofu with sesame dressing was my fav!) Chirashi set: my friend ordered this one but it also looked and tasted amazing (according to her). The rice is seasoned and there's a variety of fish flavors on top - so don't even need to add soy sauce. She did say the shrimp was just okay. Shio koji ice cream (4.5/5): one of the reasons I wanted to try Akami was because I saw this as an ice cream option! Never had it before but it was nice. Kind of reminiscent of white chocolate with bits of crunchiness from the rice crispies on top. Interesting texture and fun to try. read more

Top tier sushi experience. They have limited seating in a confined interior, so there will be a long wait during weekends. I waited 45 minutes on Saturday night but it was worth the wait. Honestly one of my favorite sushi restaurants, I always find time to come when my dad is in town. Very nice place with menu items at different price points. When going for a more casual dinner I often get the salmon and ikura donburi. The sushi is always fresh and never disappoints. Hands down favorite is the akami roll, it has everything you can dream of all put together. Only downside is how pricy it is so it's only reserved for special occasions. I could tell by the pictures that the food would be delicious and I was right. I was also very pleasantly surprised by their uber competent and friendly staff. The waitress memorized our order and was quick with everything. She got us a small bowl of rice for our baby and I asked for extra cucumbers, they were quick to bring it out. It comes with soup, sashimi, cucumbers, and a raw egg to pour over the bowl. Amazing. The octopus appetizer, crunchy on the outside and meaty on the inside. Sashimi salad, fresh sashimi and tart, ponzu dressing. Blossom roll, I like sour, tart flavor profiles in savory foods so this was a win for me. Husband doesn't like it so much, so he was not a big fan. Chawanmushi, came with crab and truffle. Very flavorful. Ankimo, not chalky, good seasoning, tender. Uni noodles, blew my mouth away. Chewy noodles reminded me of Korean kalgooksoo, with the flavor punch of uni and roe. I wish I was a mukbanger, so I could stomach 10 of these. FYI, very small parking lot. Love the sushi selection we got, thought it was super worth the price. The uni pasta was slightly under-seasoned (in my opinion) so I most likely won't be getting that again. The pasta was al dente and was good if you're looking something more subtle. We had the opportunity to try the ice cream dessert and it was soooo good. It has been a while since the last time we were here. Nothing much has changed, still so good! The place is clean, all the servers and chefs are friendly. The quality and the taste of the food remain excellent. We usually ordered the same sashimi dish, but we decided to try other dishes this time - salmon collar, crunchy tuna roll, salmon hand roll. Long wait on a Friday night at 9pm. Make sure you get on the yelp waitlist before coming! Service is excellent and food is delicious. Love the creativity of the dishes. Never tried tuna burrata before and the pairing worked surprisingly well. I got the premium sushi meal and all the fish was super fresh. I need to give this place another try because I've heard so much good about it but its omakase just didn't quite live up to the restaurant's hype! We've heard so much about Akami despite it having been around for so long, we've never been. Akami is hidden in a very small strip mall on a quiet part of Arcadia. We came here to celebrate our anniversary and sat at the bar for omakase. The interior of the restaurant is very clean, modern, and cute; however can only seat about 10 tables. The sushi bar is also unusually high, making interactions with the sushi chef a bit rare. There are 2 options for its omakase - $100 or $160. We opted for the cheaper one. Our appetizers were brought out as a set which makes sense, but for the sushi to also come 4 piece at a time seemed a bit rare. The sushi pieces were also on the smaller side, and lacked some of the stars of the show like a good fatty toro, or scallop. The only toro we got were torched which may speak to the quality of the fish they had that day. I realized then it was probably because we came on a Monday where the fish may not be as fresh since most fish market are closed on Sundays. The most memorable dish of the night were probably the mentaiko noodle dish and matcha panna cotta dessert. read more

The restaurant is small/tight but the aesthetic was quite cute, there were a few tables and the sushi bar. We ordered the Akami Sushi Set (Premium) - the fish was insanely fresh and buttery. You can tell how fresh the uni and toro was by the color and texture. The fish to rice ratio was great. Since we were with another person who doesn't really eat raw fish, we opted to order a bunch of the cooked dishes, some of them we'd never had before, all of them delicious! -Uni toro caviar crispy bite ($24) - good but you're paying for it, 2 pieces and order that come on a top of fried seaweed -Black cod with sashimi combo ($45) - can't go wrong with cod at a Japanese restaurant! It was $7-8 to choose this combo that came with 6 add'l slices sashimi, so no Brainer. -Tender octopus (daily special, grilled with spicy sauce... so good!) -Soft shell crab bao - well executed, tasty ZYellowtail rib fried with chili sauce (so good and interesting!) -Uni mazemen (with extra $18 uni on top) - so good and rich, better than uni pasta at some other restautants! Service was great, all the servers (especially Lynna) were super friendly and helpful! At the end, we were Celebrating a birthday and couldn't decide which dessert to get some ordered all 3 (and they were nice enough to comp one). Last month we tried to go to Akami Sushi but the wait was too long. Friday we got on the Yelp wait list and was seated right when we arrived. Located in Arcadia in a small strip mall Akami has limited seating. Nice simple clean interior with a L shaped sushi bar. It feature a a full Japanese menu with an emphasis on sushi. The omakase starts at $100. We ordered the sashimi set $52 and the nigiri set $52. Both were excellent. We were seated right next to the server station so the service was great. Not far from where I got my haircut and of course found on Yelp. I ordered the sushi deluxe set which came with miso soup. I heard that a restaurant is good if the soup is good. Their miso soup was good not those water with miso soups. They actually use a broth most likely fish (bonito) so it had good flavor. The sushi fish was very fresh. From the scallops to the tuna. Very good food and great service! Their menu and style is very similar to Iki Ramen in Ktown (might be sister company but I'm not entirely sure). They have a sushi bar available and have small tables close together that give it a cozy vibe. They're located in a small plaza with limited parking but there is street parking available. Their sushi is fresh and the noodles (mentaiki mentai) is sooo yummy! Very similar if not the same to the one at Iki Ramen. Their chawamushi is good, but had a lot going on and many flavors at once that overpowered the egg. For cooked options, I'd recommend the california roll and spider roll. The service is also 10/10, and they give you good recommendations. They are also quick to taking plates away and refilling water. Kitchen forgot to make one of our orders and there was no issue in taking it off of the bill. Will come back when I'm able to eat raw fish again! read more

So we dropped by Akami for a quick weekday lunch and noticed that they now have a Kaisen Don on the menu. I have been to Tsujihan in Tokyo multiple times and absolutely love theirs so I was curious and a bit excited that Akami was offering their version of it. Well, the good part was that it was basically tasty and fresh. The bad was that they didn't have enough variety in it and for what they did have, it kind of clumped together. So it tasted like the same bite and texture throughout which isn't really want you want. Tsujihan's has such varying flavors and textures and at half the cost (and their bowl is twice as big). I know that's in Tokyo so can't really compare but unfortunately once the standard has been set it's hard to not put everything else in that perspective. But I think the biggest issue, since it can be controlled, is them serving the broth in an uncovered bowl right from the start. When they set the tray down they even point out that you should add the broth when you get near the end, as they do at Tsujihan, but then why serve it uncovered and right away so that it's cold when you are ready for it? I tried to eat faster (which was not good) and then added the broth but it was already lukewarm and tasted terrible. Would have been better to just not add it which is a shame since a nice hot bowl of soup and rice at the end is so great. In Tokyo you hand them your bowl and they add the broth so it's piping hot and the perfect finish. I don't see why Akami can't just instruct you to notify them when you're ready and then they can bring out the soup. Such a simple change to make and it would really improve the experience. And while at it, use less of the crab salad and add more slices of different fish to change up the textures. Akami has great fish and chefs at their disposal so it should be easy to do. read more

A neighborhood gem! Definitely one of my top sushi restaurants in the sgv. I would recommend any of their lunch specials and getting here early when it opens. Their space is small so table seating is limited and sometimes the bar fills up too. There is a small parking lot connected with additional street parking. I've come for dinner and was able to get a table when they opened, and noticed that they sometimes take reservations for large parties. The service is great, sushi is fresh, and ambiance is spot on. i can't believe I've just found out about this place! I visited for the first time after my workout session and was craving some sushi. during lunch, they offer a special menu, which I believe is pretty value. The sushi was so good that day that I had to come back for dinner and bring my mom and so far these other things that we tried and what we think is worth it ! f o o d s : chirashi bowl (10/10) has all the essentials and the presentation is crazy and what's even better the sushi rice under is delicious and I can't get enough of it. Definitely would recommend ordering this for your first visit. salmon & ikura donburi (9/10) presentation was on point and the salmon was super fresh and tender. I don't usually like ikura but at this place was pretty good sushi deluxe: (10/10) given that this place is so close to my house I actually like this better than Sugarfish. The portions are just right for me and the sushi is super fresh and the presentation is on another level! mentaiko mazemen (9/10) definitely get this if you like mentai and this place, definitely gives a decent portion for sharing or for yourself. uni mazemen (9/10) as an uni lover this pasta is definitely for people that like uni. The flavor is really strong, however not as flavorful as the mentai. Still a really solid dish. black cod (8/10) The fish was very tender and sweet. Definitely a decent quality black cod. Highly recommend if you're that type of person that doesn't eat raw fish. sashimi premium (9/10) A very well rounded set of sashimi and everything was super fresh, but by far my favorite was the scallop! crispy rice spicy tuna (8/10) I got this as an appetizer and it's the perfect amount of crunch to sushi ratio.
