For sushi in El Monte, we were pleasantly surprised and happy to have another all-you-can-eat option closer to home. The place is actually very cute and clean too. Plenty of parking. No wait time, and we've been here twice already. Food comes out pretty quickly. The servers are kind and attentive. Our favorites include the spicy tuna crispy rice, seared nigiri, most of the rolls minus the fried ones, surprisingly a couple of the no-rice rolls, and the yellowtail carpaccio. When it comes to food quality, it does fall short compared to the established spots around the area. It is a new restaurant, so we are excited to see how they improve overtime. Came to AYCE Mabu Sushi in El Monte with my brother to celebrate my cousin's birthday for a weekend dinner. Overall, I think this place has the potential to be a solid 5-star AYCE sushi spot, but there are a few things holding it back. Let's start with the positives. The premium fish selection was fantastic. We pretty much ordered everything included in the premium menu except for the gyudon bowl, and the quality of the fish was impressive for an AYCE restaurant. The nigiri selection was excellent, the carpaccio sashimi dishes were delicious, and some of the specialty nigiri really stood out. The peppered tuna, peppered salmon, and the yuzu tuna and salmon nigiri were all highlights of the meal. For appetizers, we ordered the spicy garlic edamame, fried oyster, agedashi tofu, popcorn scallops, broiled mussels, and takoyaki. The standout appetizers were definitely the spicy garlic edamame and the agedashi tofu. Both were packed with flavor and were dishes I'd happily order again. The fried oyster and popcorn scallops were decent, but the breading was a little too thick for my liking. The broiled mussels and popcorn scallops were also slightly overcooked, making them a bit chewy. One surprise favorite was the Salmon Pleasure specialty roll. It had a nice thin layer of rice, wasn't overloaded with sauces, and allowed the fish flavors to shine through. If you're dining here, I'd definitely recommend ordering that roll. Now for the areas that need improvement. The biggest issue was the sushi rice. The fish quality was there, but the rice consistently held the nigiri back. The rice was mushy, lacked texture, and was missing that subtle rice vinegar flavor that gives sushi rice its balance. On top of that, the fish-to-rice ratio felt heavier on the fish compared to most sushi spots. While some people might see that as a positive, the rice still needs to be able to support and complement the fish. The other issue was the amount of sauce used throughout the menu. Many of the rolls, especially in the no-rice section, were heavily dressed with sauces and mayo. Sometimes less is more, and I think the quality fish would stand out much better with a lighter hand. Another small complaint is that drinks come as canned sodas rather than fountain drinks. Not a deal breaker, but a fountain soda option would be a nice addition. Service was the highlight of the night. Our server, Leo, did an outstanding job. He consistently checked on us, made sure our orders were coming out smoothly, and always made sure we had everything we needed. Great service can make a huge difference in the dining experience, and Leo definitely elevated ours. The ambiance was modern and comfortable with soft music playing in the background, making it easy to enjoy conversation throughout dinner. Parking was also easy. There's a large free parking lot shared with neighboring businesses, and we had no trouble finding a spot. My recommendation is to place your next round as soon as the first dishes hit the table to avoid sitting idle waiting for food. The ordering process could also be clearer. For the Regular Menu, guests receive a checklist form and are told that everything on it is included. However, each item has a price listed next to it, which makes it somewhat confusing. I've seen plenty of social media posts about this spot, so I had to come and try it for myself. So when we walked in, realized that the staff was pretty much the same people from TD Cafe, but everybody was super attentive and accommodating. There's definitely kinks that need to be worked out; however, overall it was not bad. The appetizers are fairly safe. We enjoyed the crispy rice, edamame, seaweed salad, tempura, and tofu. Ordered the collar on our second round, but even after reminding them, we never got the order. As for the fish, it's OK. First, previously this location was an HK-style cafe, and the new place hasn't changed much. A couple of Japanese-style decorations were added. Second, the service at this place is very good. I always order the carpaccio, right here it's nicely cut, versus at Aikan they cut tiny slivers of fish. I'm on a low carb diet and I love it that they have riceless rolls. So bomb! The restaurant itself is spacious and very clean, and because it wasn't busy (only about 5 tables filled), we expected a pretty smooth experience. The food was good, and the standard menu items came out quickly. However, the service for the premium items needs work. We waited 25 minutes for just 9 pieces of premium sushi--which is crazy for an empty restaurant. When we kept following up, our waitress never gave us a heads-up or an apology. She just gave a clumsy explanation that the chef "has to cut the fish and stuff." They really should warn customers about premium wait times upfront, especially when the kitchen isn't slammed. Today was my third time coming in and I'm glad I waited until now to make my review as the restaurant steadily got better the longer it's been open. First of all the price decreased. The first two times I was in it was $29.99 for lunch, which is already competitive for ayce. Today it was only $27.99. The main thing I might've complained about the first two times I visited were the service being exceptionally slow. Today it was quite a bit better, even though I had the same service staff. I think they've found their groove and figured out how to make everything flow better. There were some new items on the menu that I tried and really liked, like the garlic ponzu salmon nigiri. Most of the food I've had here has been very good quality, and not too much. This place isn't an ultra premium spot, but if you're looking for tasty sushi and you want QUANTITY, you will absolutely get your money's worth here. Giving 4 stars instead of 5 people all three times I've been in they have been out of several things I ordered, that seems to be an ongoing issue I hope they can work out. Wanted to give Mabu AYCE Sushi in El Monte a fair chance since it's a newer spot. The interior is beautiful and surprisingly elegant for an AYCE sushi restaurant -- modern decor, spacious seating, and even a chandelier that give it a more upscale feel. Unfortunately, the food and service didn't match the atmosphere. I've been to several AYCE sushi spots, and this one was pretty mediocre overall. I upgraded to the premium option mainly for the toro and Hokkaido scallop, which actually ended up being the best items -- but they also took the longest to come out. The biggest issue was timing and organization. The restaurant was mostly empty on a Friday night, yet food took an extremely long time to arrive. I only ended up doing one round because of how slow everything was. One of my orders never came out at all, and staff kept asking whether I had received it while repeatedly checking with the sushi bar, but nothing ever arrived. Even the table next to us seemed frustrated since I overheard them mentioning items from their first round arriving way too late after they no longer wanted them. Dessert was also disappointing and looked nothing like the menu photo. This is a rather new AYCE sushi and Japanese food place in El Monte, much in the vein of Aikan Sushi and Ramen in Pasadena. For $40.00 you can get your fill of subpar food and then be incredibly sick by the time you get home. The few times I drove by in the last few weeks, I knew something must be off, since the place is always dead empty. Still, figured I had to try it. Big mistake. The place had two servers, one Asian and one non-Asian. The Asian woman spoke English, while the other woman seemed to not comprehend the simplest of questions. They have no beer or sake or any liquor of any kind, despite neon signs on the wall of sake and soju. Maybe they're working on their license. Who knows? What I do know is after tasting a couple of items, I surrendered to considering my 40 bucks lost in order to save my health. Literally the best dish was the cucumber salad, which is sad for a place that has sushi, ramen, and cooked Japanese food. Also decent were most of the fried shumai, although in the first order one of them was bizarrely freezing cold despite all the others being hot. How does that happen? The second order had gristly meat in a few of them, which we had to spit out. None of the meat on most of the dishes is either high quality or properly trimmed for fat. The spicy tuna on crispy rice was also decent. The deep fried gyoza (which we all know are better pan fried) were okay, but once again would be better if pan fried. Unmemorable but not horrible were the agedashi tofu and popcorn scallops, though all the fried foods had a horribly bland batter on them. The worst was the tempura. The shrimp are extremely small for tempura, the vegetables were way underdone, and the batter has a flavorless taste that makes it so you only taste the oil. The fried chicken wing was gross. The meat in most chicken we ordered was alarmingly pink, although I think it was cooked. Maybe not enough, but for the most part cooked. The chicken teriyaki was also like this and because they only have dark meat, it was so insanely rubbery in texture that I couldn't eat more than a couple small bites. The karaage suffers from the same problems: rubbery, pink dark meat and with the extra addition of the fact the chunks of chicken are the size of your fist. Not a pleasurable eat. The beef teriyaki was low quality beef and was soooooo fatty and tough to chew. It was very unpleasant to eat. With the noodles, the udon proved to be more tolerable, if still unmemorable. The ramen was a disaster. It tasted like the chef had the top of the sesame oil bottle accidentally fall off while trying to add a dash on top of the broth, cause it was hold-your-nose pungent from the gross over-saturation of sesame oil. I always drink my ramen broth, but one minor sip for each of us and no one wanted it. Finally, you can get a banana boat, which is one scoop of ice cream (vanilla or green tea) surrounded by a banana cut in half and a cone. It's fine but sort of funny as they have huge posters of a traditional three scoop banana split as the desert. Doesn't matter. Got sick. The food was terrible. Service was awful. Never going back. I can't even imagine how sick you will get if you eat the sushi, considering the quality of the food we had that was cooked, though if you read other reviews you will find plenty where people talk about getting very ill. Amazing AYCE spot with a huge variety of choices, from appetizers to desserts! Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The must-try items are definitely the Yuzu Sushi, Sunrise Roll, and fried calamari. The house special lemon iced tea is also really good and worth ordering. The servers are super friendly and happy to give recommendations, which made the experience even better. It's also very family-friendly and great for kids, with plenty of rice and noodle options available. Highly recommend! We will definitely come back again soon. read more

Came here around 2:40 PM and was happy they still had the lunch special available. The service was excellent. I got full in under an hour after just two rounds, which is a big plus for AYCE sushi. Some AYCE places bring food out slowly and make you worry about the 2-hour limit, but that was not the case here at all. The fish tasted fresh, and I had no complaints about the food. I especially liked that they offer poke sashimi, which is not something I usually see at AYCE sushi spots. My only suggestion is that the rice on the sushi could be a little smaller, but overall I had a very satisfying experience and would definitely come back. read more

Place looks nice but the food is mediocre. Went here cause of the good reviews but it went downhill once we got seated. First thing I noticed was how the place left the door open when the ac was on, so there were gnats flying around our food. Went with the ayce and tried out the premium boat - definitely not worth it, fish had a fishy taste (iykyk) and their fish to rice ratio is terrible. Everytime I ate a bite of the sushi, I only tasted the mushy rice. Spicy tonkatsu ramen - overly salty, almost as if been simmering for too long Miso soup - didn't see it on the menu, asked our waitress about it and she said they have it, put in two orders but it never came to our table. Mussels - had an odd beige color and weird aftertaste to it Carpaccio (salmon) - honestly tasted like costco salmon, not in a good way, very stringy fish, wasn't firm Crispy rice salmon/tuna - not bad but the rice seemed like burnt rice, not crispy Overall... not good and wouldn't come back We weren't satisfied and not full at all. The service was disorganized from the start. Our server was unfamiliar with the menu and unsure how to take our order, to the point where a second server had to come over and re-take it. There was also confusion over whether to use item numbers or item names -- clear signs that more staff training is needed. To make matters worse, our food was delivered to the wrong table. My husband sat without his meal for 20 minutes, and not a single staff member noticed or checked in on him. No urgency, no awareness. I finally had to flag someone down myself -- only to discover his food had been sitting at the table next to us the entire time. On top of that, one of our ordered items never arrived at all. We had to request it be removed from the bill. The food, however, was genuinely good -- that part they got right. As for whether we'd return: I'm honestly not sure. It's a local spot and the food is worth going back for, but service is a fundamental part of the dining experience. If you order something, you should be able to expect it actually arrives at your table. No tip was left. The restaurant itself is clean and has a cute atmosphere that works well for a sushi spot. Food: It's actually pretty good for AYCE sushi looks fresh and taste great. Hubby and I went on date night after church and choice Mabu to try. We got the premium Ayce. I don't think I will get that again since I only wanted to try blue fin sashimi. All the other items didn't seem appealing to me. Hubby love it except the salmon eggs and sea urchin. I guess that's an acquired taste. But their regular sushi was yummy. I also tried their cucumber salad, but was disappointed as it was too salty. All other dishes were great . Service: During their soft opening it was a little slow but as expected. I hope to by when their fully open to give a better rating. Ambiance: I love the cherry blossom trees and beautiful color of the restaurant. Gives the Japan feel. Definitely a plus. read more
