A couple of my friends mentioned how good this spot is & I had to take my mom for Mother's Day to try for ourselves since she loves sushi. The small lot has crowded parking, but there's street parking and I was very lucky. It's a small mom & pops place, which usually is a great sign for sushi. Because seating is quite limited, reservations for omakase (really good value) at the bar is recommended & definitely get on the Yelp waitlist as soon as you're within 2 miles or you will be in for a wait. The staff here is knowledgeable about the menu so don't be shy about asking for their specials. We waited 15-20 min, but I will say the food is so worth it. Must tries, crispy bites, king crab chawanmushi, black cod handrolls, the bluefin burrata. Everything tasted excellent, which is rare. I've come here twice now and am glad to have found this restaurant. The fish quality is great and the price is reasonable. The parking lot is tiny, but there's street parking in the residential area. The restaurant is small with some tables and bar seating. The staff are attentive and and service was pretty quick. I've tried the omakase and I definitely recommend it. There's a $125 and $175 option for omakase, with the difference being the number of pieces. My group wasn't super hungry so we picked the $125 and we were very full at the end. I also got the matcha lychee highball. It's easy to drink and you don't notice the alcohol. I came a second time to order from the menu. The omakase had a small bowl of their mentaiko mazemen that was so good, we came back to order the entree. I also tried the chirashi. All the fish is seasoned so you don't need soy sauce. The rice is also seasoned. The fish was fresh and the portion size is pretty big. Also tried their scallop carpaccio which was very buttery smooth. The matcha creme brulee was a miss for me. It's very strong in matcha flavor (which I like), but the consistency was too soft. I think when they caramelized the sugar, the custard heated up too much so it was more runny than thick. It came w appetizers, sashimi, tempura, 2 plates of sushi, 1 hand roll, pasta, soup and dessert. For 2, we ordered sushi deluxe, mentaiko pasta, mixed tempura, akami don set, and salmom handroll. My favorite would be the sushi deluxe's chutoro. It was soft and melted in my mouth. They let you choose between tuna or negitoro for the sushi roll in the sushi deluxe but negitoro is an additional $3 The mentaiko pasta tasted like the sea. Although im not a fan of uni or roe it was good. Akami don set came with yellow tail sashimi and after you finish the fish, yoh can tell them and they will add soup in it for you to finish off the rice. I wished they gave more seaweed to make a baby handroll for the akami don though. The tempera was light and crispy but it was hard to eat the enoki because it was 1 big piece. I also like soy paper now so i tried the soy paper handroll with salmon. It was good but eel is probably better for soy paper rolls. Service here was really good. They explained why the bar was blocking off the view as akami opened during covid time so they had to block the view from customers and chef. My friend heard great things about this place so we came here for Tuesday night dinner. I didn't know how the Yelp waitlist worked but they have a little sign out front explaining it. Basically you join the waitlist then check in with the host and that's how you get on. It was deceiving just looking at the Yelp because it always showed a 0 minute wait time. It probably took us an hour to get seated which was crazy. It is a small interior so it was a given we'd wait. Takoyaki (3/5): Standard takoyaki. Not much octopus. Soft shell crab (4/5): This was free because we waited so long. It was good. Nice fry on it. Not oily. Mentaiko mazemen (4/5): This had temomi noodles which are thick and chewy wheat noodles. It was topped with a cod roe sauce, white truffle oil and ikura. It was a good noodle dish. It wasn't too salty and the sauce was creamy. Portion was small. Rainbow roll (5/5): The assorted fish tasted fresh. It was a good sized roll. Sushi set premium (5/5): This set was perfect. It came with a few sides, a bowl of rice, and a good assortment of sashimi. There was yellow tail, salmon, toro, tuna, snapper?, egg, and cooked salmon. The little seaweed salad was good too. Tucked in a small plaza on Live oak is Akami sushi with a homey comfortable vibe. Sat at the bar twice with my first experience trying the deluxe sashimi. The portions are good. The fish is fresh and thick pieces. So I was really excited to give it another try for other stuff that they have to offer. The overall service is friendly and they can't refill waters or ask you if you need anything else. Went back again for dinner this time and order their special Kaisen Don along with a vegetable tempura. The tempura is decent with good portions. The Kaisen Don however, turn out to be a disappointment for me personally. I hardly ate a fourth of the bowl. The sauce that you see right on the top with an egg yolk inside is the drizzling sauce for the Kaisen Don. The sauce is very overpowering. It even has a little bit of more a sweeter side tone to it that I don't think really compliments the overall seafood inside the Kaisen Don ask the Kai and Don already contains quite a lot of Ikura, which is already salty, and the crab creaminess is completely covered by the sauce so you cannot taste the sweetness of the crab. I would probably opt for a lighter sauce version or even just a regular ponzu sauce to drizzle over it might be enough to highlight the fish taste, and the freshness of the Kaisen Don. For very similar price I would probably recommend getting the sashimi deluxe version instead of the Kaisen Don. You actually get more pieces of thick cut fish instead of in the Kaisen. It's all diced fish pieces so cannot tell if those fishes are the leftovers from sashimi slices. Either fish is still really fresh, but I personally would recommend the sashimi over the Don. The chef at the sushi bar did notice I wasn't really eating my Kai symptoms so they asked what happened and I explained to them that the sauce is really strong and overpowering. It's very hard to finish the bowl. I am definitely not requesting for an entire replacement of the meal but instead I was just given a vanilla ice cream as a apology so slightly disappointing for spending $60 I believe plus tax and tip for something that I didn't even eat a quarter of. I would still give this restaurant another try for some other food or maybe just go back for their Sashimi deluxe or even their Chirashi bowl. Overall, I would give it a 3.5 star with the two experiences that I had dining there. Hope that would change next time I go~ read more

Found this place recently, and have been back 3 times so far. Not only is the food good, the service is also exceptional! The service is fast paced and the servers tend to you really quickly. The restaurant also gives a very Japanese vibe, with bars and tables options. I would say the most notable nigiri here is their engawa (halibut fin). It's generous and fragrant. Another notable dish is the mentaiko pasta. As someone who does not like mentaiko, I vouch that this is really good! Another thing to add is that they carry different variety of fishes that I have never seen in other restaurants before. We celebrated my friend's birthday here and everything was amazing. The modern minimalistic decor was the first thing that caught my eye. The left side of the restaurant had tables and the right side was the sushi bar. It felt cozy, but not crowded. Service was good and the food was exquisite. We ordered the toro uni caviar crispy bite to share and oh my gah, it was pristine. The uni tasted so fresh, straight from the sea. The toro was melt in your mouth and the caviar added the perfect amount of saltiness. We each got the sushi deluxe set and were able to try 11 different types of nigiri, a toro roll, and tamago. All the sushi tasted fresh and the rice was perfectly tempered. We also added the white dragon roll. I don't usually like soy paper wraps but this one was really good. Truly a hidden gem. It gets a bit busy but this place hasn't hit the feverish long lines yet but it's definitely getting there. Sure, there are plenty of sushi spots in the area but Akami keeps it simple and classy, just as it does with it's decor. So this was my first time doing Omakase. Wow what an experience. I will start off to say that the service was fantastic. They really take care of you . We ordered some sake and waited for the 6 course chef's choice meal to start coming out. As you can see from the pictures the presentation was fantastic. All the fish had such good flavor and buttery goodness. Such amazing flavors. I for the life of me cannot remember anything that we got in particular but all I know is that it was delicious. I've come here on two separate occasions, (so good that I came back the week after)! Prices are reasonable for the quality of sushi you're receiving. Here is everything I've tried to date: Sushi Premium Set (9/10): 12 pieces of high quality nigiri with a 6 piece negitoro cut roll. Really good and filling! Chirashi (9/10): one of the best quality chirashi bowls you can get. Does not disappoint, filling! Sea bream nigiri (8/10): à la carte, sea bream is delicious Angus Ribeye Steak Combination (6/10): probably the least favorite dish, nonetheless, still decent. Uni Mazemen (8/10): Uni pasta with ikura. Delicious. Chawanmashi with King Crab (10/10): hard to mess up but this one is really good. For drinks: Ube Horchata (8/10): delicious, though on the lower side of alcohol content. Matcha Yuzu Highball (8/10): delicious. Presentation is nice. For dessert: Shiu Koji Ice Cream (11/10): one of the best ice creams I've ever had. Complimented very well with the rice Krisps. Matcha Crème Brûlée (8/10): delicious but didn't make the impression I had with the ice cream. I would honestly say this is a top contender for sushi spots in the SGV. I made reservations to try their one of their two choices of omakase and picked the 21 pieces set ($175/person). First time trying this place after it changed ownership. The remodeling is pretty cute -- Scandinavian, retro, mid-century modern, tone-on-tone, very neutral. I do think they ran out of budget on the floor. It would look nicer if they redid it to match the color of the wood; the dark tone feels a little out of place. But that's a minor detail. My friend was blown away by the pasta with ikura -- it was out of this world. It's a little rich for my taste, but I really appreciate how al dente the pasta is. The sriracha has its own twist. The rice is marinated. It's a fusion take -- really interesting. I'd say it's great for people who want a little twist, but if you're coming with an expectation of traditional Japanese, this might not be the right place for you. The dessert was pretty good. We got the matcha crème brûlée, which is a little more liquidy than a normal crème brûlée, and the ice cream, which was very rich. Overall, the flavors lean rich -- definitely something you can pair well with a soda or a cocktail. But the experience is nice. The food presentation is fun. The waitress was really sweet. The staff was really welcoming and greeted us as soon as it opened and although small inside they were able to get a majority of us a table right away. They had a few things on the menu that really stood out to me including a never before seen Bluefin Burrata appetizer and a barracuda nigiri option which I haven't seen in the states before! Let me start by saying all the fish at this restaurant are incredibly fresh. I did not eat a single dish here I did not enjoy. The bluefin burrata sounds like an interesting combination but it actually works so well! The savory component of the fish with the slight sweetness and subtlety of the cheese along with the slight tart of the balsamic was really delicious and I could've eaten plates of this! The barracuda was also a treat and had a great Smokey taste on it. I think the sushi platters speak for themselves how elegantly and well plated they are, it reflects just how good they taste. Negitoro is one of my favorite type of makis and it was awesome here! There was a great variety of sushi and the special dish was loaded. I think for the sushi sets they are actually very much affordable in terms of sushi in general and how much they give you, but the overall bill was definitely large for 2 given the apps can be on the pricier side as expected. We've been hearing so much about Akami that we knew we had to come give it a try. Located in a small strip mall with a small parking lot. Our party of 2 came on a Saturday for dinner around 7:30pm and luckily were seated upon arrival. It is a smaller restaurant with a 10 person bar seating and a handful of tables. We both ordered the Sushi Deluxe Set with Negitoro for $41 each. The set comes with miso soup, 10 piece nigiri, and a 6 piece cut negitoro. The set also came with 3 mini side dishes which included tofu and bean sprouts. My favorite nigiri had to be the scallop and yellowtail. The quality for most of the fish was great, but my fiancé and I both agreed that the salmon tasted very off and fishy. I was disappointed because salmon is usually my favorite fish. The service was friendly and refilled our waters often. The interior is modern and the ambience is perfect for a date night. I returned to Akami Sushi with my son and we had the best experience with the food! I got the sashimi special and he got the sushi special. The fish was fresh and the presentation was flawless. For the quality of the fish, this was a good value. We also got the crispy rice spicy tuna and the fish to rice ratio was perfect. The seasoning was also spot on. The truffle chawanmushi (steam egg) was good but the truffle flavor was a bit strong for me. My son loved it and drank every last bit of the soup at the end of the bowl. Service was fine. It's been way too long since I've had real sushi. I usually get my fix from all you can eat joints and had somehow convinced myself that buffet sushi was just as good as sushiya sushi. Dinner at Akami reawakened my love of washoku and helped me realize how long I'd been settling for meh sushi. I ordered the salmon collar and the salmon carpaccio. I have some issues eating most seafood so I usually just stick to salmon to be safe. It was super fresh. No weird fishy aftertaste and no sliminess. They were thick, buttery slices. The collar was delish as well, crisp on the edges and tender inside. I really loved the infused oil on the carpaccio and kept dipping the collar pieces in it. Next time, I'd love to try the tuna dishes too; I trust that the fish would be fresh and high quality. It was a little busy inside on a weekend night, but I was seated with no wait time. It's pretty clean inside but corners are dusty with some crooked nails sticking out of the wall. Service was attentive-ish, I wasn't able to get some water towards the end but my server was very nice. Another night out dining, this one we hit the jackpot. Called in an hour before they closed, there was a short wait-list, me having not had sushi & nigiri in a while, this hidden gem was God-send. Thank you yelp for recommending this meal . The staff here was super accommodating, they checked our party of 3 in, and we were seated within 15 minutes with a full house. Loved the music here, very laid back, loved the ambiance, very modern, very clean, lighting was perfection and illuminated every dish the chefs brought out. They hit every presentation out the ball park not to mention there wasn't a single dish that we disliked. I'm going to spare the details on what we ordered but I'm going to double down on the staff's recommendation the Aburi Toro & Mentaiko Mazemen....just get it, you'll have no regrets. Been to Akami Sushi a couple of times now & the food never disappoints. The fish/seafood/sushi is always super fresh, which is why I keep coming back. This time I tried their new menu item, the Akami Kaisen Don Set (in their Today Special menu), because it looked just like the seafood bowl I had in Tokyo (Mukai in Shibuya). I've been searching for a place in LA that does something similar & honestly haven't found one until now. It tasted great & was very close to the one I had in Japan! Really hits the spot if you're craving that kind of meal. The sashimi that came with the set was buttery soft & melted in my mouth. My only small wish is that they'd serve the soup separately a bit later so it stays hot for ochazuke. I felt like I had to rush eating the bowl so the soup wouldn't get too cold before pouring it over. Overall, such a solid set meal & I seriously hope they keep this on the menu forever because I'll definitely be coming back just for this. read more
