"Gas Station Sushi' at its finest. You would never know about this place if you didn't pay attention. This is a sushi restaurant that is attached to the side of a gas station. Its got limited amount of tables within the place (i believe they could handle 20ish people based on the number of chairs that was present the day i went). However, the food was very fresh and tasted great. Staff was very friendly and knew my parents (who have gone there a few times before me). they knew their order without them asking, which was very nice. The sushi platter that i got was a sashimi / sushi platter. There was a plentiful amount of fish in the order and was relatively cheap (based on what you were getting). If you do go, make sure you go before the rush hour. They do not take reservations (i think you can reserve if you have more than 3) and the place as well as parking lot fill up fast. I usually get their nigiri lunch special, which is actually somewhat filling since they are pretty generous with their cuts of fish and it also comes with soup + salad + a california roll. After trying to come here the first time and them being slammed, I thought it would be amazing. While it was decent, I didn't feel it was above average sushi. I ordered miso soup, a rainbow roll, and a spicy tuna roll. I think the miso soup was botched, as it was incredibly salty. For someone who salts my food a ton, it takes a lot for me to think that. Have never had that complaint at a restaurant, only my own kitchen mishaps (lol). My rolls were both rolled ok, but I did have a few pieces of the rainbow roll that fell apart. Fish and ingredients seemed of decent quality. Lastly, the wasabi had a unique flavor and wasn't spicy. I'm not sure if it was old, just a different variety or something else, but I personally didn't enjoy the flavor. I eat a decent amount of sushi and hadn't come across that. It seemed like it's fairly popular, unfortunately my experience at Akami didn't help me understand that. read more

This Subway turned Sushi chic is truly a hidden gem. I've now been here in several times and can say they are consistently amazing. The owner, Bird is personable and super friendly. His staff makes sure you're well taken care of and their service is fantastic. The decor in here is done well even with it being built into a gas station. Wanna know how good the is? The regulars that come here have a special shelf and casing where their personal chop sticks are kept. The fish is as good and as fresh as any high end sushi spot in the area. The rolls are works of art and you can tell all the ingredients in each one were well thought out to compliment one another and the final flavor of the roll. I had the Spicy Don here with the menu describing it as having your choice of fish with rice, cucumbers, scallions and avocado. I instead got fish with rice and a few chopped pieces of zucchini That's it. Don't get me wrong the tuna was awesome and the spicy sauce was great but what a disappointment in the absence of various texture and flavors listed for their dish. I ordered several items for lunch takeout via their online order option on their website. There seems to be ample parking, and the restaurant itself is quite small with only a handful of tables. The server who appeared to be the only front of house worker was welcoming and packed my order in front of me, reading off the items to ensure everything was included. The fish/seafood was very fresh and well prepared. Everything was very good and seemed high quality. Although this is on the pricier side compared to a number of other sushi restaurants, especially ones that offer BOGO rolls, I still thought the quality was worth the price tag. The one thing I did not like was the conch. This is perhaps just a personal preference as I've only had conch in fritter form before. The sashimi version was hard - like cant bite through it hard. Again, maybe this is how it is supposed to be, but it would not be something I would ever order again. The great reviews are legit! The restaurant is located next to/connected to Han-Dee Hugo the gas station but has its own entrance. It's a very small restaurant with maybe 6 bar seats and 6 tables or so. We were seated right away and shared a conch/octopus salad. We then decided on shirashi as well as some other sashimi combo which both comes with miso soup and salad. Their salad is actually good quality with a unique house dressing, it's not the typical cheap bagged salad and ginger dressing. The miso soup is also delicious and delivers subtle but impactful flavor. The conch and octopus salad is so unique and presented beautifully. Flavors are bold but very spicy! If you can handle spice definitely get this!! The sashimi tastes like good quality sashimi but as another Yelper states, it's not quite up to par with M Sushi. But it is still solid and an excellent price point for what it is. They have a fantastic selection of fish which I was excited about! I saw flounder, sea breams, horse mackerel, different levels of fatty tuna and salmon, eel, and more. It's hard to find this variety around here unless you're dining at a $$$$ restaurant. I expected my shirashi to come with some of the cheapest sashimi options but it actually came loaded with a lot of the pricier options and was an excellent value. So I just had one of the best sushi experiences in my life at Akami. Sounds almost weird to say that such a good sushi restaurant exists in the suburbs of Apex- but it does. Akami brought me back to the sushi I had in Hawaii and it rivals/bests pretty much all of the sushi I had growing up in NYC. I also worked at a sushi restaurant so I'd like to think I know a thing or two about sushi. I've yet to try M Sushi, but so far, this is THE best sushi in the triangle. Period. First off, if all you want is a "buy one get one" type deal and you think that's a "great deal," this review is probably not for you. If you are the kind of person who appreciates the art of food, the expertise of chefs who take years to specialize in a craft, and a high quality "Japanese" sushi experience, this is the place for you. I don't want to go into detail in this review about what a "Japanese" sushi experience is versus another, but different cultures have their interpretations of how to best prepare and serve raw fish. Talking to the owners, Daniel and Bird, you can see and experience the passion for food and the respect they have for the art of sushi. The chef, Bird, walked us through the unique parts of various fish and how to best prepare/eat them and the omakase experience was immersive and memorable. It was like being invited into their own world of sushi and seeing through their eyes for just a bit (I wish I could make more poetic analogies to drive this point!). The quality of raw materials is fantastic. They don't settle for medium quality fish and don't even settle for medium quality prep (the paper they use to store the fish is an expensive Japanese kind). They even buy high quality wasabi (not the blobby, pasty type wasabi- the grainy, sweet kind). My usual taste test with sushi restaurants is the tuna. I can't really eat most restaurants' tuna sashimis. They taste too fishy and old. At Akami, the tuna melts and has a hint sweet/floral flavor- brings me right back to the tuna I had in Hawaii. They even serve the "Akami" of bluefin tuna (apparently a very rare part of the bluefin tuna). Even the Uni (when Uni is bad, it tastes horrible) was straight from Japan and had an incredible sweet flavor to it. I can go on and on but you just need to do yourself a favor and go visit this restaurant. It really is the best sushi I've had in the Triangle. Really good portion size here and fresh, good quality fish too! There is a fairly good variety of rolls offered here, but unfortunately for us we aren't fans of cream cheese in our sushi rolls.. and so many of the rolls here have cream cheese. We did choose a roll to try without cream cheese, but the cook on the tempura was somewhat off-putting (maybe it cooked too long or the oil was too hot?). My daughter LOVED the steamed gyoza here, so some of the cooked items are on point! The sashimi here is nice and thickly sliced, the nigiri is great too. There are many options for fish and the prices seem reasonable for sushi. Overall, we had high hopes for Akami, but it doesn't seem like a great fit for us. While visiting family in Apex, we were craving a sushi lunch and their favorite Japanese restaurant was closed on Mondays. We heard about a new sushi bar that had just opened, so we gave it a shot. We were greeted and seated immediately. The food and service were excellent. Our server Daniel was very attentive and accommodated my substitutions when reasonable. The miso soup and salad were not what you expect from your average Japanese restaurant. The soup was a white miso with just the right amount of tofu and the wasabi dressing was a wonderful surprise. Service was a major issue for me. It's probably the server rather but here is my experience. Once I was seated, the server kept pushing me to order a drink even after I said I just need water. I ordered green tea. After the food was served, the server was a complete no-show. All this while, server for the table next to us was constantly checking on them and refilling water when necessary etc. I even had to ask another server for check. Really 3.5 stars. Cool sushi bar, especially for one attached to a gas station. Warning seating is limited to 50-60 people. So you might have to wait or call for a reservation. Always busy unless you get there early. They do do takeout but there was a sign by the door "no takeout Friday or Saturday" but we were there early Saturday and and they were doing takeout orders. This place is normally very busy on weekend evenings. I went there for lunch on a Saturday and it was very light. I ordered sashimi lunch set and an order of unagi nigiri. It wasn't the best I have had nor was it the worst. The lunch set came with a salad and miso soup. Salad was fresh, miso soup was standard. The sushi rice is what I think can be improved on - it think the ratio of vinegar was a little off making the rice taste slightly more like regular rice. The salmon roll in the set was great.
