Seriously, y'all. We almost didn't get out of the car: It's attached to a gas station, and when you walk in it just doesn't seem like a good idea... but it's the best idea! I've eaten sushi all over the world, and this is right up there with the best world class sushi. The fish is deliciously fresh. The rolls are creative and well made. Check out the back of the menu for the really great stuff, like the eel jalapeño roll, or the geisha roll. Our server was very friendly and made really great recommendations. I overheard the chef talking with a young boy at the bar, helping to teach the boy about sushi and fish. It's was adorable. Get here early or make reservations. There are only about 50-60 seats. Sushi is my daughter's favorite food and she come here often. She has tried ALL the other places around, and Akami is her favorite, so I tried it with her when we did take out, then tried it again when I dined in. I sat at the bar and watched the chefs prepare the sushi. Wow, what an art!!! It is amazing...I suggest eating at the bar on your first visit. I had the dragon roll and the california roll...both were very good and would order either one of them again. Everything is fresh and they use quality ingredients. Even the rice is better than some sushi places. Fresh food, fantastic service, friendly folks....it's all here. The problem here is trying to decide what to order...there is so much variety. The place is small and you may have to park in front of the gas station, but there is parking available. They do have take out, so if you cant get a table, order and take it home. You can immediately tell they use fresh ingredients of high quality when you eat here (or pickup from here). We have ordered the following: * Salmon larb - Very good. * Prawn Shumai - I felt like there was too little shrimp and too much dough. It was the only item we ordered that I did not enjoy as much. * Chicken dumplings - Pretty good. * Veggie roll - My vegetarian wife thought it was delicious. * Rainbow Roll - Excellent. Their fresh ingredients are highlighted in this roll. * Spicy tuna roll - Excellent. I appreciate a good spicy tuna roll and this one was exceptional. * Geisha dragon - Daughter selected this one. I enjoyed the baked seafood and the roll. I do not like cream cheese in rolls so the 2nd time we got this I ordered it without the cream cheese, problem solved. I know what you're thinking. Gas station sushi? Hard pass. But wait, hear me out. Akami is legit good sushi. This little gem of an eatery is what so many of us have been waiting for. Been trying to get to this place for a while but my plans kept getting messed up. I'm so sorry that it took me this long to try this place. It's easily the best sushi I've had in the Triangle in the four years I've been here. The fish was fresh and perfectly sliced. So delicious. I couldn't believe it. My only regret is that I only had one stomach. We sat at the bar for lunch and I literally wanted everything that went up on that sushi counter. The presentation was right on the money. The details were all there. I particularly liked the dash of wasabi they used in the ginger salad dressing. Well done! The staff was courteous and friendly. And the place is very clean. Spoke with the owner (Bird) for a bit and he's a super nice guy. Really made us feel welcome. I was only there for lunch so I'm looking forward to doing dinner there soon. The specialty rolls look incredible. Everything is moderately priced so you won't break the bank but you're not getting cheap sushi (do you really want cheap sushi?) The one word of caution is that the place is really small. You may have a wait during peak hours. They are going to need more space - soon - but I don't know how they are going to do this with the current facilities. In any case, this is a must go. Leave your preconceptions at the door and have the best meal you've had in a while. read more

I almost hate telling the world how good "gas station sushi" can be, because I secretly like having an off-the-beaten-path place to call my own. But the service is friendly (even if sometimes a bit slower during rush times) and the sushi is delicious. Can't go wrong. read more

The shop is very clean albeit a little small because there's limited seating. So wait times for seating takes a while. The service was kind and while I was waiting, I could recognize that the workers there all spoke Thai including the sushi chef. I thought that was really neat because you don't see very many all Thai staff. I'd say the wait time is a bit long because it took us 45 minutes to get our sushi after we sat down and ordered, but I figured that it was to be expected from a popular sushi place. The cuts of fish were FRESHER than I've had anywhere else I have traveled in NC. This is the best quality sushi I could get here. (And I come from Cali where I eat all types of fresh fish off the coast--sushi is TOP TIER in the Bay Area) I highly recommend coming for their raw fish, and the hamachi Kama is good too. I think next time I'll call and order pick up to avoid the long wait time for food. Get ready for a pricey bill though! We ordered a lot of sashimi. I can't say enough good things about Akami Sushi Bar. We tried it tonight for my birthday and it was just fantastic. I had the Sashimi Moriwase plate, and no matter how much I tried, I simply couldn't finish it. My husband had the Hamachi Torch roll and a spicy tuna roll and both were plentiful and outstanding. Akami is definitely not your typical BOGO ripoff kind of place - the rolls are large and well-priced, and so, so, so much better. Highly recommended. read more

Cute little hole in the wall place. I've been living in the area for almost half my life and had no idea this was here until I found it online! The inside is very cute and the sushi was very good. just got to experience this place that everyone was raving about. got a fairly large to go order spending over $100 and when i asked them for sauce she barely filled it and what im assuming is the owner who makes the sushi said fill it but we normally charge .50. obviously didnt have a problem paying over a hundred for the sushi to start with but to have them debate whether to charge for sauce and make it a big deal to start with puts a bad taste in my mouth. haven't even tried the food and definitely won't be returning. definitely lacking in the customer service and customer appreciation area. read more

Well, based on everyone's review, my friend and I decided to try this lovely establishment. Much to my surprise, Akami is tucked next to Han-Dee Hugos gas station. Don't let that fool you, the restaurant is very clean, & tastefully decorated. The staff is over-the-top friendly. Now for our lunches...I had a lovely sushimi and California roll. With that was a lovely tossed green salad, miso soup and unlimited green tea (extra beverage price). My friend had a yummy spicy don ( poke bowl) with salmon. Now talk about fresh! I moved to NC from CA about 6 months ago and have been on the hunt for good sushi. After trying about four other places in the triangle, I about gave up. Although this is not the best sushi I've ever had, by far this is the best sushi I have tried in this state. I wouldn't go as far to say that it is 100% authentic tasting, but it's definitely worth trying! Service wise, I called and placed a to go order at 6 and was told an hour. I came an hour later at 7 and then waited in the car for 25 minutes more. That being said, I'm completely understandable as I am sure they were either short staffed or had their reasons. I had lunch here a few days ago and it was incredible delicious. I started with the Miso Soup, very tasty, then I had yummy house salad, then I enjoyed the Shrimp Tempura on a bed of White Rice and a small side of incredible tasty Seaweed Salad. Everything was marvelously delicious. The staff and Chef were attentive and very polite, the restaurant was clean, pleasantly decorated and small, yet had plenty of tables. My husband doesn't want me to tell anyone about this place. But I think the location will deter enough people from giving this restaurant a shot. Suffice it to say, the sushi quality beats out 99% of NYC sushi spots. Their rolls are well apportioned, large with a good amount of fish and light on sauce, perfect! We had Japanese Uni, a bit pricey at $22 a pair (round basket made out of wrapped seaweed with a sushi rice bottom, filled with this delicious goodness. Salmon Sushi was cut perfectly, and quite sizable. It's clean staff is friendly, and overall small restaurant. This place doesn't take reservations. Very inconvenient. We showed up Friday around dinner time. The place was packed, to be expected based on rush hour and limited seating. Lots of screaming children and families here. We were given a quote of a 35-40 minute wait. Not much to sight see outside so we opted to wait inside. Waiting area is cramped and uncomfortable and the hostess says they will text when seats are available. Around 40 minutes later seats open. A party that came after us and joined the wait list was seated before us by the hostess. Yes there were open seats so no problem right but what if they were given the option of sitting at a table instead of the sushi bar or vice versa and we who waited longer were left with the latter option. Waitress went to them first for their order so we had to wait even longer. This is a mistake on the hostess's part. After the long wait we also wanted a regular table but one still wasn't bussed, we were told it would be ready soon but after the near hour of waiting, we chose the sushi bar. Waitress service was almost non existent, very few wait staff for a lot of customers. We ordered the South Beach roll, Spicy Tuna roll, and the Fat Boy roll. Everything was exceptionally average. The rolls were also on the sweeter side. After seeing some of the signature rolls, I tried to manage my expectations. Cream cheese and cilantro? The sushi rolls are a generous size but the pricing still isn't adequate for the quality of the rolls. I think a lot of the stellar reviews for this place are from families who order sushi at BOGO places or places that also sell hibachi. The whole gas station sushi vibe is also gimmicky and the parking situation is terrible. Less spots than there are customers inside. Overall, I can't recommend this place when there are so many other sushi places in the Triangle that are much better. If you want good sushi, I recommend M Sushi, Sushi Mon, or City Market Sushi. This place is CowFish vibes, casual, and more geared to family friendly. Expect a long wait during rush hour that isn't managed efficiently and a noisy environment.
