I was super impressed with Uglyfish! One of my friends has been raving about it so I knew I had to give it a try. The interior is beautiful and they did a great job making you feel like you are not in the middle of a shopping plaza. My favorite bite of the night was the spicy tuna roll. Everything was seriously fresh, taste-the-ocean fresh. I sampled my way across the menu: cold plates, hot plates, rolls, hand rolls, sashimi. If it was on the menu, it was on my table. This is by far the best sushi I have had in the Triangle. Fresh. Flavorful. Portioned just right for sharing amongst family or friends to get a taste of everything. The restaurant is a dimly lit ambiance giving date night or just relax and eat this amazing food. Whichever one you're going for lol The service is top tier! When asking for recommendations, I was given a great drink suggestion (Gin and Jam). I'm not a gin drinker but THIS was a great choice and I forgot I was drinking Gin. There are always several chefs freshly preparing the food so the service is not slow nor is quality comprised. I visited twice before I was able to review because I had to go back again to make sure I wasn't going crazy (haha) but to also invite my Mom who isn't a big sushi eater, though this place changed her mind. I've been twice. The first time I sat at the bar and the second time at a table. Photos from both visits. The ambiance is nice - new/fresh/updated. It's surprising to see considering it's in a shopping center next to a smoke shop. Don't let the outside deter you. Parking was easy. It was not crowded either visit. The staff were all helpful and welcoming. The menu prices are great for the quality of the food. I have had comparable sushi for much more. They have a standard menu and a "special menu" so not sure how long those items will last at those prices. The cocktails were good. I enjoyed mine both times. I like the ease of coming here to get a quality meal at a good price in a great atmosphere. I just hope people aren't deterred by the unassuming location and they manage to thrive. read more

Tried the new sushi spot Uglyfish in Raleigh and had a solid first experience. The decor inside was amazing, honestly way nicer than I expected based on the outside. It has a really cool, well-designed atmosphere that makes you want to stay and enjoy the vibe. The service was great and extremely informative. The fish was absolutely fresh and high quality, which is always the most important part. That said, a few of the dishes felt like they were missing a bit of depth and flavor. Nothing bad by any means, just not as bold or memorable as it could be. Since they just opened, I'm definitely giving them some grace and plan to come back again soon to see how things evolve. There's a lot of potential here, and I'm excited to try more once they've had a little time to settle in. read more

Found my new Raleigh sushi spot Modern sushi in Raleigh that actually lives up to the hype Ugly Fish NC is doing fresh, high-quality sushi with seasonal plates and a clean, modern vibe. We had the lychee mai tai mocktail, three orders of the nigiri sampler (yes, it was that good), spicy tuna maki mono, yakitori with Joyce Farm chicken, miso soup, prime yakiniku, and the zuke bluefin. After seeing posts about Uglyfish on instagram, we decided to go try it out. Uglyfish is a new sushi spot located in North Raleigh off of Altantic Ave//Millbrook. The ambiance and design is modern but a bit dark. We ordered two appetizers, three tolls and drinks. The food overall was pretty good. My favorite was the Kiwi Hamachi. The reason for 3 stars is the service. They were not adequately staffed to run the place on a Friday evening. We placed our order for the 2 appetizers and 2 rolls along with drinks. All the food came out at a decent pace. We realized that it was not enough food so we ordered one more roll. We had to wait about 20mins for just the one roll to come out. We figured we might as well get some dessert as well. We ordered the pumpkin cake. The dessert took another 20mins to come out. We were there for a while for a dinner that should have taken 1 hr tops. Also, not sure if they even have a manager on staff but we did not see anyone walking around or checking on customers. From it seemed like, the owner was there with his family and friends sitting at the sushi bar. Whatever staff was there seemed like they were busy attending them while the customers waited for their order. If I am going to pay almost $200 for a meal for two at a sushi restaurant, i can expect a lot better service!!! read more

The restaurant is in an old shopping center that looks a bit abandoned. I wasn't sure the restaurant was even open at first glance. Walked in to a very nice ultra modern sheik look indoors. But has no sound dampening ,so it was a very loud inside. Service was like a 6 out of 10. They have a lot of people running around acting busy. Some standing off to the side. They dropped my sushi and ran. I waited about 10 minutes for someone to comeback so I could ask for wasabi. I ordered the Torotaku which had a pungent smell and fishy taste. I only tasted really the asparagus in it since there was very little fish, especially after scraping off the topping. The spicy tuna was delicious and the bluefin shrimp I would recommend getting. They seem to be trying, hopefully they can tighten up their service and find a better fish supplier so they have fresher fish in some dishes. read more

I just want to be the first to do the review for this new place that I have grown fond of already and been there twice since its opening. So I'll keep it short and sweet for now, then add more later. The service is amazing, ambience is modern, sleek elegant and up to date. As for the food it is great I would say its as comparable to M sushi which to me is the top sushi restaurant in NC. For instance the Nigiri same platter quality is as good as M sushi; which is my favorite from the restaurant. Its a relief to finally have a sushi restaurant of this caliber to be located where it is. No need to have to go to Cary or downtown Durham for M Sushi. If distance is the issue or a matter of convince and time. Btw the flan cheesecake dessert is delicious and rare on the RTP; its highly recommended. read more

The sushi and related dishes at Uglyfish are among the best I have ever had. The fish is very fresh, light and delicate, and they create combinations that you don't see everywhere. They update the menu regularly. The service is excellent - the staff are all very courteous and friendly. The ambience is enjoyable and the decor isntasteful and modern. One recommendation I have is to be more welcoming to those who have a gluten-free diet. There should be several gluten-free options, including desserts (there currently are NONE); the gluten-free menu items should be marked "GF"; and the servers should be fully aware of which menu items are GF and which are not. This would be a very welcome enhancement to this otherwise top-notch restaurant. read more

I've been here twice since they open and have been blown away both times. Drinks, food, and service are all top notch and super thoughtful. The menu is different each time with nightly specials that you'll want to get a few of. The oysters, tuna nigiri flight, sashimi sampler, and blue fin tuna shrimp tempura roll were highlights on the specials tonight. Our very knowledgeable and friendly waitress recommended we try the yakitori from the hot options and it was so tender and flavorful with the slightest hint of heat. The cake and flan desserts are both incredible but even though I'm a huge flan fan I think the pumpkin cake wins but very narrowly. The price is also very reasonable for the whole experience. This spot is incredible! By far the best sushi restaurant in the area-we got back from Japan a month ago and I can honestly say that what we had was completely on par with what we had in Tokyo. My partner got a roll and the katsu pork and I got a roll and the kiwi hamachi. The menu/dishes are well conceptualized and everything came quickly and tasted amazing. Passing through Raleigh from Florence, SC to Wake Forest when my six year old and I got a hankering for sushi. Couldn't do proper research while driving but saw great pictures and high rating and added the stop. Got out of the car and immediately, of course, my kid has to urinate incredibly bad. We run inside admittedly in a bit of emergency; he literally swings open the door and asks where their bathroom is. The hostess asks if we're dining and I say we were going to take an order to go, she says they don't do to go. Ok, fine, we can eat in, but as my son is literally breaking down, I just ask can you let me get him settled and we'll assuredly spend money. She then says well we don't have any room for walk-ins and I'm exasperatedly like fine we'll leave I guess, can he just please use your restroom. She looks me in the eye, over my six year old son frantically trying not to pee his pants, and says "well, we don't have a public restroom." I'm sure every parent and person with a grip on their humanity can imagine my incredulity. But! She did suggest maybe we could try the restaurant next door and maybe they would be so kind. Thankfully they were but only after I promised to pay and my son didn't make it in time. All to say, I'll give uglyfish the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't my son and I being black that led to such inhospitality; maybe they would have been fine with a kid of any color peeing themselves. And though I don't live here, and would absolutely never patron this establishment if I did, I will tip my hat to say the brand lived up to the name.
