The interior is kind of nice, but there was nothing special about the sushi. Not the nice presentation that I expect and not chilled which would bring out the flavors better. The server seemed inexperienced and a little bit odd. Not service oriented. The visit was not awful, just made me appreciate my goto sushi place that much more. My girlfriend and i had a great experience here. We went on valentine's day and although it was very crowded and busy we were still given remarkable service. Because our rolls were taking a little longer than usual our server brought out two bowls of miso soup on the house which made me feel like we weren't being ignored. The Fire Mountain Roll is AMAZING and I gladly recommend it. Honestly has to be one of the best Japanese Restaurants I have ever been to. I am an udon noodle fanatic and I try to eat udon from wherever place offers it and this place is outstanding. All the sushi here is spot-on as well. The teriyaki specials aren't out of this world, but they are good. The tempura that they serve here is delicious. I don't know how in the world they get it so crispy without leaving an overly greasy after-taste. I'd pick this small restaurant over some fancy sushi place in NYC in a heart beat. read more

Akari sushi is the best sushi joint in the area. We practically pay a visit weekly for the sushi and sashimi deluxe combo and other goodies. The sushi rolls here are quite good! I ordered a roll with spicy crab on top of a tempura shrimp roll and I thought it was pretty tasty and fresh. The service is good and quick too. I've tried most of the Japanese restaurant in Poughkeepsie and Akari is definitely on the top of my list for this area. No offense, Poughkeepsiers, there aren't any decent restaurants here. I always get the Volcano Roll. Love their crunchy tuna and their special chef sauce they put on it. The sashimi is quite fresh and most of the rolls are tasty. Their other entrees like udon soup/negamaki beef/fried udon noodles were just okay. You're much better off ordering one of their sushi rolls. instead. The sushi here is the best I've had in the area, but man is it SLOW. I ordered a lunch special today of 2 rolls. 45 minutes later it still had not arrived and they really did not think that was a big deal. I was livid. I had them wrap it up because I had to go. When I got home and ate them they were delicious! I'm giving them 4 stars because good sushi is hard to come by around here and this was very fresh and very good. Do NOT eat here! Until about 2 months ago I would have agreed with the other reviewer. My husband and I eat here atleast once a week and found the food to be terrific. Over the past few months I began to notice my sashimi was tiny bite size end pieces and some times felt a bit ill afterward. I gave them the benefit of the doubt until last week when we purchased our usual. I thought a few pieces tasted funny but afterward my husband and I both were sick chills, vommitting etc... Huge fan of Akari! I'm from NYC, and when I'm visiting family in Poughkeepsie, I sometimes crave for decent sushi. Luckily Akari does the job for me! It's so close to the station that whenever I'm waiting for the train, I'll grab a bite to eat. The prices are reasonable however it's a bit small so there aren't as many seats available if you're looking to bring a huge group. My sister and I got food poisoning from the sashimi plate; none of the fish on plate was fresh (which I understand is impossible since we ate there on Memorial Day) and smelled fishy. As soon as I ate a piece I thought there might be a possibility I would get sick but thought it would be rude to spit it out. Akari is our go-to, reasonably priced sushi spot in Poughkeepsie, which kind of makes up for the fact that the food around here isn't amazing. (Which might not be a fair assessment given that our points of contrast are the years we've spent living and eating fabulously in L.A. and S.F.) We probably average a trip to Akari once every 6-8 weeks and we're never disappointed. We've enjoyed all of the rolls we've tried, whether they're simple rolls or the specialty ones. What I particularly like about the way that they make their specialty rolls is that they don't drown the rolls in the sauces. I'm a huge fan of their seaweed salad and I love that that they now have a liquor license. The staff are always friendly and efficient, and the space is great for large groups of friends now that they've expanded into the space next door. read more

Their sushi deluxe changes day by day - you should not go there late evenings, because they might run out of fish - I was amazed with their sushi deluxe with my 1st visit, but tonight - two tunas, two salmons, three red snappers, one yellowtails, and one white tuna .... what do you think?
