I stopped there on Sunday because I wanted some Japanese food, and I have never been to that restaurant so I thought it would be a nice idea to give it a try. They are conveniently located in the same parking lot as the train station. My boyfriend and I wanted to pick up the food and eat at home. In the meantime, we ordered a red beans tempura ice cream (Yes, dessert before the main dish!! I am living dangerously LOL). The batter for the tempura was a bit thick but the ice cream itself was good. I had ordered a vegetable tempura dinner which comes with salad, white rice and miso soup. The miso soup and the salad were good. The vegetable tempura was not good. It was very greasy and did not look fresh. I hope that maybe I came on a bad day. We only ordered the signature roll Akari, which has tuna, salmon and crabmeat and miso sauce, and it was super tasty and the quality of the fish tasted very fresh! The location is right next to the train station, which is extremely convenient. This is a great place for exploring sushi rolls, as they have so many different kinds, many of which I have never seen anywhere else. Will definitely come back next time I'm in town! Solid, typical sushi place. My girlfriend and I went in for lunch and we ordered the salmon tartar and the lunch special rolls (3 6-piece rolls). The salmon tartar is not the typical tartar where there are cubes of salmon - I think the tartar was the same meat that they would use in a crunchy salmon roll (i.e. grounded salmon with breadcrumbs). Tasted fine, but my gf was disappointed that there was so much breadcrumbs. We both agreed that the yuzu sauce it sat on was delicious. I ordered the spicy yellowtail roll, spicy white tuna roll, and the salmon avocado roll. None of them were special (tasted like rolls I'd get anywhere else), but they were still good. The spicy white tuna roll was my favorite. It's a nice, quick stop for anyone who just got off from the Poughkeepsie train station (about a 5-7 minute walk). read more

The chicken teriyaki and rice were solid and miso soup was great but what really did it for me was the sushi. It was so fresh and delicious. Akari is a hidden gem tucked in just by the Poughkeepsie train station which serves absolutely fantastic food. The place is tiny and can be a bit cold in the winter; however, the food completely makes up for it. The servers are also really friendly, and the prices are moderate. For appetizers, the shumai are a very solid choice. I also love the ginger dressing that they use on their salads--it strikes the perfect balance between not-too-oily and not-too-gingery. For lunch, I've usually gone with the chicken katsu bento box, which is very tasty, while I've enjoyed the udon noodles several times for dinner. I'm not really into sushi; however, my family and friends are, and they've strongly approved of Akari's fish. In addition, they've enjoyed sampling a few of the many interesting special rolls that the restaurant does. These are a bit pricier, but an interesting counterpoint to the standard sushi and sashimi that the restaurant serves. It can sometimes take awhile to be served sushi; however, one look at the plates indicates why--they're absolutely beautiful. I only had takeout from here but I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. I'm sure most of you Yelpers are familiar with the fact that I rate a sushi place strictly by its spicy tuna roll. this restaurant was okay but honestly I had their food almost a month ago and I cannot remember anything more about it. Excellent, well-arranged sushi for a great price. I've always been impressed by the fish and shumai. The service is good as well. My only complaint is the setting (a small rectangular room). If it's a chilly night, the tables near the door get a cold blast of air when the door opens. Additionally, sounds carry easily--if there's an obnoxious person in the room, everyone knows it. I stopped here after attempting to walk across the Walkway. It was just way too hot for my dog, so we back tracked and got dinner instead. I found Akari on Yelp and decided to give it at try. We originally were going to take it to go and sit in the car to eat because we had our dog with us but when we arrived, we noticed they had outdoor seating. We asked if we could sit outside with our dog and they said no problem. They walked out and at first were startled to see a huge rottweiler by my feet but they served us with smiles and my dog enjoyed watching people walk by. The sushi was excellent, especially the kani salad. Very friendly people. I'd love to give them another try. read more

I brought my boyfriend, who is a sushi lover, to Akari sushi for his birthday. I read reviews and decided to drive the hour and half to try it out. Let's just say if we lived near we would be broke.... Everything was amazing. We had the hot sake which was great, the shrimp and veg. tempura for an app, the batter was so light and crispy it tasted delicious. He had the salmon and tuna tartar, which he claims if you're a sashimi lover than this is the appetizer for you. I had the tuna tataki, which is thin sliced tuna with almost a transparent sear to the outside neatly placed with a thin semi spicey dressing in the bottom of the dish. This was absolutely delightful. He also ordered the Magical Roll and the Spiderman Roll. I ordered the Fire Mountain Roll and the Snow Mountain Roll. These rolls had amazing flavor combinations that shocked our pallet like no other. To end our meal we chose the tempura banana and vanilla ice cream. Once again, not a morsel left on the plate. To top it all off, the prices were very reasonable and the portions were extremely generous. Not to mention the service is above exceptional. Wonderful atmosphere and super friendly staff. Needless to say for the price, quality of food, size of portions, and delightful staff and service, this overrides my favorite sushi restaurant. The food was good, but nothing spectacular. I had steak teriyaki, the steak was perfectly cooked and the sauce wasn't too sweet. A friend of mine got sushi I sampled. Walked in to make a to go order and the waitress was rude. I was with my mom who asked for a menu and the waitress walks over points to it and barges off. It seemed like any question my mom had it was giving the waitress physical pain. They had us waiting like idiots after placing an order come to find out 15 min later they never even started it. Sometimes they're good, sometimes they suck. Don't bother complaining tho! Hubs ordered the "Sushi Deluxe" which is supposed to have upgraded fish choices... Yet when they run out & only have the lousy fish left and it's now sitting on your "Sushi Deluxe" plate the owner simply didn't care that he ripped you off by doing that. No apologies, no offers to make it right. Awful people skills. If they keep doing that, they'll be out of business. The is a pretty good sushi joint. Me and my 10 year old sushi fein son tried this about a week ago on a Friday night. The salad, with its DELICIOUS dressing sticks out in my mind as one of the best ginger dressings I have had in awhile. The soup was pretty damn good too but I feel most miso soups taste the same. The sushi boat we shared was sized generously and we had some let to take home. Atmosphere was pleasant and our waitress was very sweet and attractive. I used to go this restaurant quite often but no idea what happened to this place. The service is horrible and the food so-so with reduced portions. The worst part, neither the wait staff (1 woman) and the cook were wearing masks during our take out yesterday at the time of Covid-19. She just threw the food outside on the table and shut the door. I was so excited when I found out my Bumble Date loves sushi just as much as I do and wanted to go to Akari. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised my first time eating here. I used to love this place until I had a bad experience recently. When they served us the ginger sauce on the side, there was a bug in it. OK this stuff happens and it's out of their control. They served us a new one. No biggie. But then when my side of noodles came out, there was a hair on the rim of the plate. It wasn't even mixed in with the food. It was clearly on the plate and they served it to me like that. Not one, but two incidents in one night is enough to turn me off. Being a native Manhattanite, I've had a wide selection of sushi restaurants to choose from my whole life, so when I moved to Po-Town to attend college, I wasn't expecting much. Little did I know that Poughkeepsie would house what was soon to become my favorite sushi restaurant. Ever. By the time my Junior year rolled around, I frequented Akari at least once a week. I couldn't get enough! Though I have since graduated and moved back to Manhattan, I make a point of visiting Akari anytime I am in town. Akari's sushi is undeniably fresh and flavorful. I have honestly never tasted something I did not like (if not love) from their kitchen. I have converted many friends into sushi lovers, with Akari's assistance. Not only is their sushi amazing, but their other dishes are equally delicious. The seaweed salad, calamari appetizer, and udon noodles... just to name a few. If the above isn't enough to entice you into trying Akari, let me also mention how amazing their staff is. Everyone who works there is incredibly friendly and attentive. The other day I had only 30 minutes before my train and I needed lunch. I stopped in, explained my haste, and ordered the Sushi Lunch special, not expecting much. I started with the miso soup, which was startlingly good, and then almost instantly the sushi platter arrived. It was outstanding--fresh, ample and thankfully fast--and considering the lunch was only $10, I have to give this place the top rating, even though I've only been there once. I'll certainly be back. The interior is kind of nice, but there was nothing special about the sushi. Not the nice presentation that I expect and not chilled which would bring out the flavors better. The server seemed inexperienced and a little bit odd. Not service oriented. The visit was not awful, just made me appreciate my goto sushi place that much more.
