Nice little tucked-away Japanese spot. Plenty of parking since it's in the same complex as ShopRite. Went for lunch on Saturday. We were quickly seated, and ended up ordering the following; - Spicy Kani Salad (5/5, it was actually had a little spicy kick to it) - Cheese wonton (5/5, my GF said she'd definitely get it again) - She got a spicy tuna roll for lunch and gave it a 3.5/5. She'd get it again but it wasn't earth-shatteringly good. The tuna tasted fresh, and she said she'd get it again. - I got the chicken teriyaki lunch box. A definite 4.5/5. Service was also nice and friendly. All in all I'd say a solid 4.5/5 overall. We will definite be back to try out their dinner selection. read more

Was pretty disappointed last time I came here. We got takeout and I ordered chirashi and specifically labeled it as gluten free in the notes. Picked up our order and took it home. Got a ton of gluten free soy sauce, always a good sign. Then I opened up my chirashi and immediately noticed krab sticks (not GF) and tamago (sometimes not GF). Taking them off, now I saw some stuff on the rice which is unusual so I called and it turned out that they put seasonings and soy sauce on the rice (also not GF). This could have been really bad if I was full blown celiac and not just intolerant. They told me I could come in and they would make a new one. So, instead of eating, I got back in my car and drive over. Didn't wait too long but they gave me a new one. Not much of an apology over the phone or in person either, very lackluster handling. When I ate the food, the rice was still warm which was nice. Overall, the fish didn't impress me this time and after some time my mom said her stomach wasn't feeling great. Mine was bubbling a little but not like hers. Was it the sushi? Maybe. Either way probably will not be returning for a while. read more

This is a very good sushi place. The fish is fresh and well presented. The prices are about the going rates, if anything a bit below average. The lunch specials in particular are a good value. The restaurant itself is somewhat plain inside but isn't that noisy when it's been loud. Service is prompt and friendly. read more

Came here with my son for lunch. We ordered a chicken teriyaki lunch box, a shrimp tempura lunch box, and 2 rolls: Boston and Shrimp tempura. The miso soup was piping hot, and very tasty. The 2 rolls came very quickly, and they were delicious. The 2 lunch boxes were very good. I am very pleased with how tender the chicken was, and the flavor was rich and not overwhelming. My son's shrimp tempura box came with many pieces of tempura. It was also vey good. We were the only ones dining in on this Thursday afternoon, but there were lots of take out orders. Clearly whomever runs it has their shit together because everything from service, to decor to the sushi was amazing, especially for. Soft opening. I have become disenchanted with this place. Two orders (4 pieces) of the Sashimi Hamachi yielded smaller pieces of fish, obscured with a bunch of things that covered up the quantity of fish. It would take a lot for me to go back. read more

By stroke of luck my family (party of 7) dined here on cinco de mayo because we couldn't get into the local mexican spot. We honestly couldn't have been happier that we ended up at Akasaka. The owners/hosts/staff were all hustling and bustling to ensure everyone was having a pleasant meal. We've since been back the following weekend as well and will continue to be a go to spot! Spicy Edamame had great flavor Chicken Gyoza - perfectly flavored and fried Yellowtail Jalepeno was super fresh and delish Sushi pizza was a bit different than normal had a more smokey flavor but was great. House salad was large and ginger dressing was good slightly lighter in color than normal but still good. Sushi was mediocre. Just go to Shoprite next door if you want the Sushi which is cheaper, bigger portion, and better taste. Worst part, $3 charge per person for hot tea without telling you in advance and we realized that when we saw the bill. They just gave this to us when we sat down. The restaurant is clean and nicely designed and the menu is nice, but utterly lacking in dishes common in Japanese-run sushi bars. The staff is very young, speak English poorly and know little - perhaps nothing - beyond that which is on the menu. Ask for oshinko, perhaps just yamagobo, or natto, and you'll get nothing more than puzzled looks. The fish is fresh and of good quality. All in all, pretty good for a startup, but I doubt it will get a lot better in the year to come. read more

The sushi is consistently fresh and delicious. That's the sweet spot here. I've had the hibachi a few times and the chicken is always tender and flavorful, but the shrimp, lobster, and scallops are usually overcooked. I've bitten into pieces of shells in the lobster as well. I won't order the seafood hibachi again but I'll absolutely return again and again for the sushi and chicken! read more

Nice decor, can seat about 45 with tables and booths. Very attentive service throughout the meal. We only eat cooked dishes, but the sushi presentations we saw were lively and well received by other diners. The katsu is excellent, the tempura tasty but a little too oily. Their soup bowls are excellent; I loved the fried tofu bowl. You can choose your soup base, your noodle style and your protein or vegetable. The lunch boxes are also nicely prepared. They include shumai (very tasty), good white rice, a California roll which is creamier than usual, and your choice of several "mains". The Korean bulgogi wad yummy, the salmon was meh. The teriyaki sauce tasted a little off. Salad quality is ok, the dressing is a little different from the typical Japanese style; less ginger, more ranch. It's ok, just a matter of taste. The restaurant is next to ShopRite and uses the same parking lot, so parking may be a challenge, depending on timing. Overall this is a very pleasant restaurant and a nice addition to Livingston. They are new and might still be in their shake out stage which means they will only get better. It's also nice that they don't add a surcharge for credit cards. read more

Great place. Owner is enthusiastic about recommending different dishes. The dumplings are amazing; I even bought a frozen bag of 50 pieces to cook at home when I'm too lazy to cook. They use unseasoned non-sushi rice which makes everything taste worse than the expected mediocre suburban NJ sushi.
