Been ordering out from Nikko for years and occasionally dine there. In, or out, Nikko is hit or miss. Some nights we love it but nights like tonight, where we ate there, was totally just fine. Grilled calamari was rubber. Gyoza was tasty but not hot enough. Edamame fine. Soba noodles with chicken was very sweet and the steak teriyaki was over-sauced and tough. Assorted sushi was fine but didn't seem overly fresh or prepared with the usual love. Sapporos were cold and delicious. Wine by the glass dreadful. Service was good. Atmosphere is fine - but no real vibe. read more

After hearing how amazing this place is for several years now, I finally took the leap and visited this past Thursday evening. Our table of three was immediately seated at a very clean table, and the servers were on top of our every need. Very attentive to refreshing drinks, offering water, and our need for more time to review the offerings on the menu. Food is very good, some of the best sushi I've had in the area and most authentic to what you likely would receive in Japan. The prices are not quite a match to the quality, however. While everything seemed super fresh, i's So expensive. The lobster roll was tremendous, but at $24 it was by far the most expensive piece I've ever ordered. I may do it again if I return, not sure. When dressed up with the rice and caviar, it's hard to taste the actual lobster and you could have placed scallop or cod in there and I may not have known. Drinks - very expensive. Mixed drink is $14 and served in a super-sized shot glass at best. I can easily think of three other great Sushi venues within 10 miles that are BYO and far less for not much less in quality....but I'm glad I tried it. This would be a five star review with more reasonable prices. If their goal is to differentiate and keep the riff-raff out with high prices, they will likely succeed in that. The sushi at Nikko was fantastic! Very fresh and as you can see in the picture, presented beautifully. Went with a group of 4 and decided to get the love boat for 4, it was more than enough food with some appetizers- we struggled to finish. The service was alright, the wait staff were attentive and moved us to a bigger table once space opened. I will be back at Nikko when in the area! read more

Came to celebrate my cousin 30th birthday in the beginning of the month for the first time with a couple other people and let me tell you that the ambiance is so beautiful and they had a separate room where you can sit on the floor and eat. The food was absolutely out of this world! We ordered just about everything and it was all literally melting in your mouth! The service was amazing, very knowledgeable and helpful as well. We've been to this restaurant many times before but last night will probably be the last. Wait staff is super friendly, but the food has really gone down hill. The Zaru soba noodles we ordered were overcooked and essentially disintegrated in our mouths. Also, the unagi don was tough as rubber (poorly prepared) so we couldn't really eat it. what a discovery....i used yto drive by admiring the tardiotnal japanese wood building. then went in for lunch freshest sahimi evr with brown rice. i have since almost weekly ordered in to my livingston office "dr marc c" now regular sashim of moutwatering soft and oily toro tune, sakwe toro samlon, makerel, and on advice from the very attentive ladies serving some other specials. prices are not above other sushi, but quality is unmatched.....also kirin and other japanese beers. no happy hour so i took off a stat, but really a 6 start experience one of the sushi masters eddy explained his years of training, rigor and art. read more

Surprised that Yelp doesn't have reviews from me, as I have been going here for years. It is one of the better "Japanese-ish" restaurants in the area. The price is reasonable and the service is very good and attentive. I am disappointed that they have not re-opened the sushi bar, and it seems to be permanently transformed into a staging area for Door-Dash. Their sushi and sashimi offering is better than many restaurants offering sushi, and they offer a wider assortment of fish. Food from the kitchen , tempura, etc is excellent. They have Natto, one of the few restaurants that serve it, though the price for MaguroNatto has exceeded my willingness to pay. Menu items and ala carte sushi are reasonably priced. My only complaint is that the dining room to the right of the entrance can get VERY LOUD, with north Jersey cackling and screeching. If you are looking to have a meal where you can engage in a conversation with the person across the table, you would be better served to sit at a both in the dining room to the left of the entrance. read more

This place is very special. First off, lychee martinis, yes! Lol. Second of all, this place felt so authentic and also the fish tasted so fresh. We ordered Gyu Tataki which was our appetizer. However, they gave a lot of sliced beef! We loved it but we were getting full hahaha. Great app to share. Delicious too! Momichi, which was an amazing roll. I recommend trying it because the flavors were unreal. I couldn't get enough. The white dragon was my next favorite roll. The fish tasted so fresh, Honestly, I never think of that because I just love food haha but this roll made me realize the freshness of fish. Delicious! We also have the pikachu and tuna special. Came here with my sister for dinner and it's really cute. Service was very attentive and fish was well prepared. The restaurant is in the middle of NJ and I'm sure it isn't easy to get the freshest of fish. Though everything was well prepared and nothing was old, I could tell some of the fish was previously frozen. Please take that with a grain of salt as I'm used to Chirashi in Hawaii where the fish was probably swimming in the ocean a few hours before. read more

A great local Japanese spot with sushi and other Japanese dishes. Has a good amount of seating within the restaurant and they also have takeout available. For food- their yellowtail appetizer special is always delicious. I also recommend their fried oysters which comes with sauce on the side to dip. Salad and miso soup comes with most dishes. For food, their sushi is always great and I really love their teriyaki dishes, one of the best I've had. The teriyaki comes on a hot dish tray and includes potatoes, broccoli and carrots along with white rice on the side. The potatoes are so good because they absorb all the teriyaki sauce. Average sushi that does the job and takes care of your craving. The staff was friendly and I was given a booth since the sushi bar was blocked off (assuming this is for covid). I started with the Miso Soup and I really enjoyed it. Miso can be hit or miss and can really form your first impression when sitting down for a meal of sushi. This one was very flavorful and hot. I then ordered 3 rolls that included the Black Dragon, LA, and Mexican. The portions were very fair and I just barely finished all of them by myself. The LA and Mexican rolls were my favorite of the 3, which is surprising because I always love dragon rolls. This one just had a weird texture issue that I wasn't a fan off. I don't believe it was the eel on top, I think it was something with the tuna on the inside. Don't get me wrong, I still ate it all but it wasn't my favorite. I've been bullying my boyfriend to take me here ever since we moved to NJ. Am I sort of a sushi snob? Yes. Did I eat sushi for like 70% of my meals when I lived alone? Also yes. Does my boyfriend live, laugh, love sushi like I do? Absolutely not. But we had a reason to celebrate so he took me here. We started with the lychee martini and the Japanese slippers martini. Both were delicious. We then got the shrimp shumai and the pork haru maki. The shrimp shumai were fantastic. We then split a love boat. Holy cow. Bury me in the love boat. Feed me it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chefs did a wonderful job. The only complaint I'd have if I had any, is that no one told us what each piece of fish was, which is fine, I like them all, but trying to guess which piece of white fish is yellowtail v white tuna v something else isn't my strong suit. The waitress was so sweet and attentive as well. All the fish was delicious and fresh, and my boyfriend even got adventurous and enjoyed a few pieces (although mainly stuck to the rolls). He even said he'd definitely come back which was music to my ears. The restaurant is huge and open. The inside was bright and welcoming. Really a nice change from some of the tighter sushi spots you normally see. Parking was in abundance. Can't wait to come back! read more

For New Jersey sushi, this is likely the very best around. I am a self proclaimed sushi snob. With NYC across the river, it is hard to compare the very best with mostly mediocre. I generally don't eat rolls and I always judge a sushi place by the quality and cut of its sashimi. Since nearly every local sushi restaurant in the area has disappointed us in one way or another, my husband and I returned here after more than 10 years. Don't misinterpret---we weren't intentionally avoiding Nikko, but we just prefer avoiding Route 10 at almost any cost. But alas, we were hankering for some fresh fish and made the trip down the superstore highway. We arrived in time for the early birds exiting and were seated by kimono clad staff at a booth. The decor is clean and well maintained but don't expect trendy. The interior is pretty basic. Fortunately the food is not! They have ample appetizers and sashimi specials listed on the boards. We began with the bronzini tiradito appetizer and then had the wasabi toro and the yellowtail jalapeño sashimi starter. The presentation was beyond..even more impressive though were both the delicate way the fish was sliced and the crisp beautiful taste. Hints of spice and acid were well balanced. We moved on to the live scallop which is one of our favorites and it was spectacular. They dice some of the scallop into small bits and incorporate into a seaweed salad which they plate in the center of the large mollusk shell. We tried the ISO roll which was fine. The king salmon and toro sashimi were heavenly. Stuffed to the gills, we forced ourselves to eat the handrolls we ordered. I had the crispy salmon skin and the rice was warm, not too sticky and the seaweed wrap was crispy as it should be. The waitress advised us to eat the handroll in short order to avoid the often soggy and chewy mess that results when you wait. Yum...just delicious. Can't wait to go back. For great sushi with no pretense and authentic chefs and warm service Nikko should be your go to sushi place. It comes with prices that are higher than most local competitors but truly there is no competition when it comes to the food itself. Well done Nikko! Cannot believe we stayed away for this long. Still continues to deliver the freshest sushi in NJ! We eat here two to three times a month and they have come to know us as regulars at the sushi bar. Eddy always make us feel welcome. A great local go-to. Nikko always has a delicious assortment of food with wonderful and attentive service . Appetizers: Bronzini with Ponzu Sauce, an occasional special which never disappoints. Delicate ponzu sauce enhances the fish flavor, accompanied by a hint of hot sauce. Kani Naruto Roll: Simple and tasty. Entrees: Sushi & Sashimi Combo with added Uni: Can't beat delicious fresh fish. I opted for a tuna roll, as I preferred the flavor over the California roll. Nabe Yaki Udon with Shrimp Tempura: Simple flavors work so well together. The noodles were done just right, and the tempura had a nice crunch. Dessert: Pistachio Ice Cream: A nice layer of crushed pistachios on top of pistachio ice cream. If you like pistachios, this a wonderful overload of taste. Chocolate Lave Cake: Very good. Rich chocolate taste, with a side of vanilla ice cream to cut the sweetness. Service: Wonderful. Iv'e been going to Nikko for probably 25 years I haven't sat at the sushi bar in awhile its mostly take out and I get the same thing all the time . I get the sashimi dinner and fluke ponzu. When i Started going to Nikko I fell in love with the place the sashimi dinner had nice size pieces of fish and the assortment of fish was excellent . A couple of years ago I noticed the pieces of fish had gotten smaller and the selection of fish also had gotten smaller. Last night I called in my usual order and when I got home and opened the bag I went into shock as all the containers had gotten smaller..... everything !! the miso soup ( which is complimentary ) I ordered seaweed salad likewise smaller . The sashimi dinner is $ 36.95 !!!!. Everthing I used to love about Nikko is gone and so am I. read more

As sushi restaurants have proliferated in this area, they have mostly lost their Japanese roots. Numerous small delights of the sushi bar have been progressively disappearing, many having been replaced by sushi rolls that have never been seen at a "real" sushi bar. Not so at Nikko, where Japanese pickles, yamagobo, natto and other delights are available for the asking. The fish is also excellent and served in traditional styles. The cooked food is also true to its roots. Nikko is a vanishing breed and I, for one, am delighted it is still with us. I'd give it a 4 1/2 rating but cannot figure out how to do that here! read more
