This is one of the better sushi places in Riverview. Still not the best, but we've tried a lot of sushi around here, and this one will curb your cravings. They also have hibachi that the kids would eat, so that's a plus for us. For sushi, we ordered the yummy roll, caterpillar roll, monkey roll, and the yahoo roll. These rolls were HUGE and filled with rice. Definitely a 2-bite minimum. Overall, this place isn't my favorite, but it is one of the better sushi in this entire area, so if we're craving, we would choose here over other places. read more

Looking for a local sushi spot and found Akira tonight, close to our house! It's a small but cozy place in a strip mall. Inside was very clean and well put together. Their menu is expansive and they have a lot of options, from bento box, hibachi, noddles, sushi, sashimi, etc. For apps we did the pork gyoza which was delish! I decided on the sushi dinner which had 3 rolls, with miso soup and salad included. The rolls came out and I was impressed with their size! I couldn't finish them all! What a good value though, it was $18 for the dinner. We also ordered the Chicken Teriyaki dinner ( not the hibachi meal) and the sauce on the chicken was delicious. My friends brought me here and it seemed like they were treated like family. The Chef behind the counter immediately recognized my friend and welcomes him in, by first name. Our family of 5 were seated immediately at 6pm on a Sunday night. Orders were taken, suggestions and questions answered politely, and then a few minutes later, the food began to arrive. My nephew and niece love Sushami and I preder cowboy rolls and chicken. So I had the cowboy roll (which was not deep friend and was wrapped the size of thumb.) It was small which made me happy because I wasn't so sure I liked their version. I was being adventurous because I had just had a cowboy roll for the first time 2 days earlier in another part of Florida. So this cowboy roll was smaller, not fried, but was still delicious.) My friends kids and themselves had some other delectable rolls and I continued with a large portion of General Tso's chicken. It was ok. The rice was great but the chicken itself had a hard outer shell and was a little difficult to eat. I took a large portion home. The service was excellent and friendly. They answer my many questions and offer suggestions without making me feel rushed. Each time I've visited the restaurant was clean and I was greeted with warm and friendly service. As a bonus the sushi chef always lets his presence be known with a cheerful greeting from behind his prep station! Now for the cuisine... We went Friday around 6pm, sat and waited 20 minutes before we, 2 adults and 2 kids, got up and left. I guess this means I have an explanation for the less than freshest fish quality and freshness the last couple times I ordered during the changeover. I hope this does not continue to be a problem for the new owners, but the freshest fish is essential in sushi-making. All their Fried items, like shrimp tempura, was fresh, it's just that the Specialty Rolls at an average of $15 is steep if the sushi is simply not fresh. 23/100 ORIGINAL REVIEW: The vast space is decorated Japanese-style with dim lighting and friendly, prompt service. Pretty little Japanese dolls are perched beautifully at the foyer entrance, along with the Lucky Cat, who is waving "hi" to you ;). Seating inside is a large sushi bar, pub tables, hibachi and regular tables, as well as a few booths running along the outskirts of the restaurant. Cozy. I'm in this restaurant a lot! You could say I can't live without this one, and this sushi is always in my regular rotation. The rolls here are always made with very fresh fish/seafood and all the accompanying ingredients of fruits and vegetables are super-fresh as well. I've tried quite a few rolls, and so far, my favorite roll is in the 'Chef's Special Roll' section. Two really good lunch deals! Akira also will will pack it to-go for you on some of the lunch specials (obviously not the Hibachi). The cooked Dinner/Ala Carte/Appetizer items are very good also. I've tried the Crab Rangoon, filled with sweetened cream cheese. The Katsu Chicken is always excellent; with crunchy and lean white-meat chicken, it is always fried in fresh oil. Chicken Teriyaki and a number of similar proteins are offered ala carte. Sashimi, Yakitori, and even Fried Oysters are just some of the appetizers to get you started on a great meal journey. If there is any complaint, it's a very minor one. That is, for to-go rolls, Akira should package the rolls with high-domed lids. This is because with some of the larger rolls, it sometimes becomes necessary to have to scrape part of the toppings off the lid. I was going to dock a star for the price point being a little bit high. However, I'm not going to, because the fresh ingredients, the friendly staff, and the clean and spotless space of this restaurant make their food well worth the money. I'm pleasantly surprised! I can't lie the reviews almost scared be away but I thought let me form my own opinion. I'm so happy I did. Service was excellent from start to finish. Hubby ordered the Teriyaki chicken, I tried the appropriately named Yummy Roll. The roll was great! It had all the elements I look for in a roll. Shrimp, cream cheese, avocado, spicy crab, eel & spicy mayo. It was delicious and filling. I especially like the size of the rolls, they weren't huge to the point where I couldn't fit it in my mouth (I hate that). I tried some of hubby's teriyaki chicken and it was excellent as well. Extremely tender, it broke as I was trying to pick it up with my chop sticks! The chicken was cooked nicely with a great sear, and juicy. Prices were reasonable. Except the ginger salad which was priced at $3.95. For me that's too much for iceberg lettuce and dressing. Cleanliness is really important to me and everything seemed in order. Our silverware was a little unsightly. They were kinda dingy looking, which I didn't make a fuss about since I use the wooden chopsticks anyway. All and all I may have found my new sushi spot. So pretty hard to rate a hibachi restaurant 5 stars, because....well...I mean come on...all pretty much the same..."Japanese ketchuuuuuuuuuup!!! Chicken Mc Nuggeeeeeeeet!!!" First, let's talk about the food. We ordered a seared tuna appetizer. Oh, WOW, that was amazing! It was covered in a Ponzu sauce which was obviously home made. My wife is not a huge fan of Ponzu sauce but this one was very smooth, lemon taste not too strong. Tuna was very fresh. The filet was very tender and perfectly cooked, as was the lobster tail. Chicken was also perfect. Juicy and sauce was again smooth, not too strong. They also gave everyone Japanese noodles in addition to rice with an amazing soy/teriyaki sauce. The Chef was awesome. Instead of regular stuff, he started having fun with the squirt bottles that are usually filled with oil they spray on table at beginning on dinner. He had one filled with Water that he sprayed in his mouth, then asked if I was 21 (obviously am), he then took another bottle and sprayed in my mouth. It was Saki. He offered the same to everyone at the table which was actually hilarious. When he offered it to 9 year old at table, we all initially freaked out until we saw he switched to water bottle. This has been our neighbor go to for years. We placed an order through Doordash last week for pick-up and noticed something was off. My wife had been suggesting we try Akira. We have been looking for a good local sushi place, and had found one we liked but didn't love and feel like we had to go back. Last week was one of our daughter's birthday and she wanted sushi. We were in a bit of a time crunch to get kids to church so decided to try Akira which was just a short drive from our house and church. Man, don't tell her, but my wife was right. So mad at myself for waiting over a year to come here. The sushi was WAY better than I expected. Price was reasonable. Service was good. And it is literally 6 minutes from my house, SIX minutes. We will be going back soon and regularly. We love sushi and this is great sushi. Give Akira a try. Even if you live further away, it is worth a drive. We are so excited to find this sushi restaurant! We started with Miso soup (yum), a large Saki (hello!) and then ordered a couple of rolls and Sashimi. The Tuna was very fresh!! We had it served as Sashimi and in the Heart roll, both simply melted in our mouths. Now, THAT is fresh tuna! Also tried the rainbow roll (awesome) and spicy tuna (yummy and hot)! One tiny negative was our booth, the table was very small and we pushed it towards my son so he could eat while my hubby and I sat on the front edge of our seats.
