I went in the other day and a woman was treated horribly. I stepped back and was in shock. She had three beautiful dresses and was overcharged. They were supposed to be boxed, or at least the obvious wedding dress! The conversation was ridiculous and anything but customer service. The woman left very upset. Paid her bill and was devastated. Rightfully so. I was trying not to panic at this point. I mean I have hemmed numerous things over many years here. No biggie... So, I tried on some very simple pants. Got settled. When they proceeded to tell me the hem on my gym/lounge pants was $45 dollars!!!! WTAF? I have had them resize pants for less than that. Or even replace elastic on a skirt! So many different tailored items that were way more sophisticated. I, in fact, just had the same pants hemmed in Palm Springs for 12 bucks! So, double. I was expecting double. They are nuts! I left and will never ever return. There prices and attitudes are ludicrous. I called around. The going rate $22-28. The neighborhood repeatedly recommended Martini's! 23 bucks double hemmed to perfection. Family owned 33 years and awesome turn around. Go down the street to Martini's Cleaners. Plain and Simple. And there are other family businesses that are not overcharging and walking the line! Check them all out!

I said I needed it by Saturday in the morning. No problem. When I walked in, she was busy taking measurements on a customer, while another waited. I asked if she wanted me to come back since she was busy. Yes. So, I ran errands for about an hour and went back. I showed the seamstress my dress and told her I just wanted the dress taken up to the slip. She protested and said she would need to take up the slip as well because it would show. (Not if she hemmed it a 1/2 inch below the slip) I asked how much for both. I heard $17 and thought, "Great!" But, when I repeated 17, she corrected me and said $70!!! What? It's just a simple jersey-knit. No beads or lace or anything. A plain, simple dress that didn't even cost that much. I went to Kyoto Cleaners located right across from them and she charged only $20 for both.

Well they've been saying it's "broken" since last year... If you aren't going to let your customers pay by card, you should mark your business as cash only. By the way, there were customers that paid with a card even though they kept pushing for cash. Also, there's been a big price hike in the past two months. It costs $25 to hem pants and $45 to take in the waist. If you compare prices with other tailor shops in the area, you'd notice that their service is overpriced.

She took great care to get everything just right and even redid the zipper which was pulling on the fabric and also evened out the sleeves. She did a lot of hand sewing there. She even offered to trim the tulle of my daughter's wedding dress in an emergency fix (the tailoring that had been done in NY was poorly done and the tulle underskirt was not trimmed correctly and showed awkwardly from under the skirt).

I went in January during her typical hours and there was a sign stating that she'll be out until March. That's fine of course. I came again in April and she had a new sign stating that she'll be out until June. It's really annoying. That's fine if she just wants to be open for 2 days a week (it's her prerogative) but, people need at least a little reliability. And, the city has really raised the prices on metered parking in the area so, I ended up wasting ~$15 on parking thinking she would actually be there during her normal posted scheduled hours. It's just annoying :). I found NB Tailoring in North Beach who appears more reliable in availability and did an excellent job with my pants. On a separate note, she's a good tailor but because of the area, she knows she can charge exorbitant prices - really exorbitant. I have found as good of tailors for much less.

There's different type of tailors in SF, the pricey kind that carefully will alter a $5k piece or a…read morewedding dress, your neighborhood tailor that will fix a hem or a button but it will come undone after a few washes, and then there's the HB alterations team that will do a SOLID job for a reasonable price and offer great customer service. So far I've brought in several trousers for alterations and they do such a professional and clean job on each one. I couldn't recommend anyone else if you're in the Union Square area. When you make it to the building they will need to buzz you in and they are located a quick elevator ride on the second level.

I brought a cheap floor length trench coat to them and asked them to build me an inner lining so it would become slightly more wind proof. I knew it was going to be a challenging job since it would likely mean partially deconstructing/taking apart the jacket so the inner lining can be attached from the inside. Within 3 weeks worth of time, they had sewn in this beautiful silky satin lining with matching color. I wore it over my sweater and long sleeve shirt in a brisk afternoon, and sure enough having the extra lining completely helped! I also asked them to hem several pairs of thrift store pants with frayed edges. They did a beautiful job with picking out matching thread for hemline without significantly shortening the length. During my pick up I gave them additional jobs to repair several moth holes I discovered in a couple of wool items, including a beautiful tweed blanket I bought from Falkland Islands (I almost donated it). While I eagerly await to receive these items back I am confident that their work will continue to showcase the fine craftsmanship they always deliver. I cannot recommend this place enough! Their location is close to the Montgomery BART/MUNI station which is ideal esp if you're dropping off before or after work, coming from East Bay. The entrance is a bit hard to find but just make sure you ring the right door bell and they will buzz you in.
