Alkofeia is a Palestinian operated restaurant (with one Jordanian) in the heart of Bayonne. As it's the middle of Ramadan I decided to go there in person and order myself a very traditional dish called Mansef. The staff were extremely busy and yet they gave me their full attention. It was just past the time to break fast, and they offered me some fresh Arabic coffee and dates to break my fast. As for the location itself, the seating is a bit packed but they will accommodate bigger parties with advanced notice. Also, the aura and atmosphere really takes you away from the city and suddenly you feel as though you are back in the street markets of Palestine with all kinds of art and patriotic memorabilia. If you are looking for delicious, original, and traditional food -- don't waste your time anywhere else.

Everything was delicious (I sampled almost everything that was ordered). My cousin also stated that this is the best food he has had during his most recent visit to NY. I had the falafel platter. The rice was cooked to perfection but the falafel was a bit crunchy, but edible and good. I also tried the beef kebab and lamb and they were both amazing. The salad was good for me, but my cousin thought it was a bit too acidic. The hummus was good but the Dubai cheesecake was to doe for. 10/10 would recommend. If I am ever on SI again, I would absolutely eat from here again.

I started with the baba ghanoush. I loved it. The flavor of the roasted eggplant was delicious. And the roasted flavor kept it from being too rich. It was creamy and delicious. I almost didn't have enough bread to put it on. And believe me, I was piling the bread high with that stuff. There was also a small bowl of marinated green olives on the side. I normally do not like green olives, but these were fantastic. The olive oil marinade kept them from being too bitter for me. For my main course, I had the Adana kebab. Ground lamb, red bell pepper, and paprika. I had a small, which was one kebab. It also came with a very nice marinated salad, and a decent size portion of rice, which was tender and had a good flavor to it. It also came with a red sauce and a tzatziki sauce.. the red sauce was too spicy for me, and the tzatziki I put some of it on the rice, and then the rest I dipped my kebab. The kebab wasn't spicy at all, and the red bell pepper, and the paprika gave it a great flavor, it was not gamey like lamb can be. It was also very tender. Everything was so good, I ended up finishing the entire dinner, and I was stuffed. I would've loved to try a Turkish coffee, but it was like 8 PM, and I didn't want to be up for the rest of the night... :). The price was reasonable. The only reason I'm taking off a star, is because they add an automatic 18% gratuity to the check, and then there's also a spot down at the bottom for a second gratuity. That's why you need to read your check very carefully. If you don't notice the automatic gratuity, you might end up paying a double tip. I thought the automatic 18% gratuity was more than fair. It all kind of skeeved me out but we stayed. We placed our food order. We never were offered water. I asked for a soda and they brought me just a can, I had to ask for a cup of ice and waters. The service was not overly attentive. They barely came over to us. I needed something so I had to walk up near the register to get their attention. A bunch of the workers were standing together it took one a minute to notice me. I got the chicken shish- some pieces of chicken were very chewy I couldn't eat them. Others were okay. I did enjoy the rice it came with. Ultimately, I just think for how empty it was we should've gotten a little bit better service.
