This was a nice detour and I found a great sandwich shop at Filoncino. I was in Jersey last week and I want to grab a lunch before heading back to New York. I found Filoncino (thanks Yelp) in Staten Island right off the exit. I pulled in and saw Filoncino has plenty of available parking. Once inside, I see the restaurant is actually split with 1/2 sit down wait service and 1/2 take out with a few tables to eat your sandwich. The menu choices were pretty substantial, I was going for a hot chicken cutlet but the imported prosciutto sandwich was calling my name. This sandwich was a true banger: fresh mutz, peppers and prosciutto on freshly made Italian bread. Trust me, you're not getting this caliber of sandwich in Boca Raton! I took my two nephews here, on the way home from an event and I was very disappointed. When we ordered off of the menu, by the number, the bill was printed with the order number and item name, but charged a la carte, of course with an overcharge. It was an overcharge an item that was messed up in the first place. When you ask someone twice, which bread and how do you want the eggs and they tell you specifically AND the waiter repeats it TWICE!!!! I do not expect something completely different from that. and to top it all off, he almost finished his sandwich before his iced tea came to the table. I'm positive they do not need me to come back. Edit: this review is for Filoncino Cafe on 2935 Veterans Rd W in Staten Island. They are probably related but I wanted to make sure that this review is for the right location. New favorite! We absolutely loved the food and experience here! They have a bakery with a big selection of Italian desserts, they also have bread and cakes. Absolutely delicious treats and coffee beverages! We came for late lunch and had sandwiches and salad. They have dairy free milk alternatives and gluten free bread as well! Fantastic! The bread here is so good! The sandwiches were excellent! ( hot tuna panini and chicken Parmesan sandwich ), the salad was fresh and so tasty! Friendly and attentive service, they were very busy for lunch but still excellent care and service. It's nice and warm inside, and the have 2 different areas and different style seating depending on where you sit. In the front they have tables and chair style seating, while in the back they have half booth style/chair style seating and some divided areas. Definitely recommend! Coffee was really good, didnt order food. My issue is the line situation when one is ordering food/drink to go. It isn't clear where one should wait on line, and where the line seems to start is really the pick up area so you shouldn't stand there. It's a bit confusing. First impressions was the parking lot was extremely small and hard to park. We walked in to the restaurant and we thought it was really cute. We were seated promptly. We looked over the menu quite a few times since it's so big. We decided on an eggplant platter and eggplant sandwich with broccoli rabe. It came out rather quickly. It was fresh and good but extremely over-seasoned with salt herbs and oil. I also ordered a chicken, mozzarella and broccoli rabe to go! The girl brought it out right away! . The waitress Came over initially She was not enthusiastic or happy to be there! She barely came by to check in thru out our meal. She never cleaned our plates and so on. I asked to take home half my sandwich and she threw a container at me . The container didn't close properly and my sandwich ended up on the floor. We had dessert it took forever. I'm usually afraid to eat in bakery / sandwich places bc I have a nut allergy, but even though they were very busy and packed, the waitress was so accommodating. Last week I picked up an order to bring to the hospital after my granddaughter's birth and received a call that my order (in hand) was incorrect. I went there one night, ordered chicken parm(2) with pasta, chicken cutlets(2) with fresh mozz, avocado and balsamic plus 3 rice balls. total $60. Go back next day and order chicken parm with pasta X2, grilled chicken plate, 2 rice balls. cost $100. get home, there is only one piece of chicken in each dish. I have to say, the food is good, but I can't understand how I get less food and it cost $40 more. suffice to stay, I cant bring myself to going back to this place and spending that kind of money for the inconsistency in prices. read more

I wish I could give 4 1/2 stars because that's really what they deserve. I want to start off by saying they diddnt have the soft bread nor the seared eggplant that I ordered . Fine . Now I want to explain the level of quality they produce. They don't just slap shit on a sandwich all willy-nilly, it's arranged where the proportions are correct. we all have gotten a sandwich with a full pound of thick cut ham yuck. The quality of their stuff is very good and it's also always fresh, as well as their bread which is always delicious never stale. I seen some people complain that $15 for a sandwich is too much but go to the sandwich king in Queens or the Sunset deli in Brooklyn and you will not pay less. I need sandwiches on a different level in those places. I have eaten here three times in the last month and I can honestly say that they are very consistent and what they deliver which is quality. If you think about it $30 for two sandwiches or $40 for two with rice balls is a cheaper dinner then you'll get anywhere for the quality of what you get. This is my new standard for sandwiches. Some time ago I visited Filoncino Cafe on Amboy road (the one with the terrible parking lot) and, let me tell you, the staff was absolutely fantastic! Every member of the team that I encountered was friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely seemed to enjoy being helpful. They went above and beyond--offering a great drink recommendation and even customizing my drink with a smile. You can really tell they care about their customers, which is such a refreshing change from the usual cafe experience I am used to. I got a Honey Oat Latte w Caramel drizzle btw! However, I can't help but feel disappointed by the owner. It's clear that they're not on the same wavelength as their hardworking team. During my visit, I witnessed, what looked to me like a boy in a mans body, shouting and being rude/dismissive to staff in front of customers. It's disheartening to see such talented and dedicated workers treated poorly. A little appreciation can go a long way! Overall, I highly recommend Filoncino for the incredible staff, but I really hope the owner recognizes the value of treating their team with respect.
