While my experience here has been limited, I did appreciate the authenticity and options contained in their store. I was a little surprised by the lack of any interior lights being turned on but hey, I guess they're saving on electricity and being green. Cool. The nice but quiet man behind the counter took my order and provided me with a great hunk of paneer. A funny side note, as I left I tried to take a photo of the exterior and while I was chilling in my car, the man came out and asked if I took a picture. I then explained as best I could about Yelp. This was my second visit to Al Madina and I am filled to the brim after today's lunch. The first time my experience was average taste-wise but this time I completely devoured in the food. Al Madina is not the kind of place you would go for ambiance and I felt that I am eating in an Old Delhi restro. Most of the people don't dine-in here as there are only 2-3 tables struck between the racks of kitchen counter and grocery items. Coming back to the food, I would say its a pure bliss as compared to the other Indian restaurants in the area. We ordered Chicken Sandwich, Beef Keema Sandwich, Lamb Biryani and Suji Halwa (A sweet dish made from Semolina). The beef sandwich was better than the chicken, but both were filled generously with onion, tomato, multiple sauces apart from the meat and wrapped in a tandoori roti. It took me a lot of time to gobble up everything together but each ingredients' flavor added to the overall taste which was drool-worthy. The lamb biryani tasted authentic and the meat pieces were very succulent so much so that the meat was coming off smoothly from the bones. Suji Halwa completed our lunch by adding the much needed sweet ending to a savory lunch. I can't say much about their curries as the one I tried in my first visit, Chicken Quorma, wasn't anything to write home about but their Naans are the real deal! Super-soft and fresh! Go there to have some mouth-watering food, just don't expect fast or personalized service, although they try their best, but the rush is too much to handle! read more

A beautiful small place that would usually go unnoticed. But once you try it, you want to keep coming back for a whole lot of reasons! First, it's cheap and this is a main factor for students. The food tastes great too! There are not a whole lot of options but you have a few basic dishes for both vegetarians and non vegetarians that are sure to satisfy your hunger while exciting your taste buds. We go there for a meal at least a few times a week! They also sell meat and some basic grocery stuff that you may need. I have taken quite a lot of friends here and they all loved it!! I usually get chicken shawarma with Garlic sauce with Tziki sauce, Schug sauce (i beleive that is the name of the sauce) and red spicey sauce rice onion tomato. Al-Madina is the little hole in the wall that you must try. It has been slowly progressing and growing itself into a regular restaurant, but their food is phenomenal. No matter what you order, it will be packed with an immense amount of flavor. My personal favorite, as I tend to go 1-2 times a week, is their chicken shawarma. The chicken shawarma is a cheap $5.49, but it is a huge portion and is out of this world. I would recommend doing "everything, spicy" in terms of toppings and getting a side of their spiced potatoes. Food is as good as ever and the renovations really make this place shine and better than ever. Prices have gone up a bit which is totally fair considering how low the prices used to be/still are. They've gotten rid of the boti/chunk kabobs and are strictly doing shaved shawarma. I'm preferential to the original kabobs but the shawarma is still fresh and delicious. The owner is as wonderful as ever, I'm so happy for his business. They are even busier than before so be prepared to wait a little longer now. It's rare to find food this affordable that is this good. Food is made in front of your eyes. This place is a hybrid grocery store / take out / eat in place. Menu is limited but everything is fresh and done well. Staff has a good attitude. I flood my good with garlic sauce with a hint of red spicy sauce. Indoor seating is Spartan but clean. If you ask me what's that one place around UC that I absolutely dig and is my absolute go-to place, I'd answer Al-Madina in a heartbeat! In a fraction of it. It's chicken and kabab shawarmas are OFF THE CHAIN! WOOOO!! The low prices and lip-smacking taste are what make this place an absolute winner for me. And I drop-by here often after gym for the proteins w/o burning a hole in my pocket. It's a life-saver for so many desi students and people looking for halal food. To give a little b/g, this divey place is owned and run by a Pakistani gentleman, Imtiaz bhai (brother) as I call him, along with his wife, and has been there for more than 2 decades. Initially just a place to get raw halal meat, he slowly expanded this to sell other spices and food items, and sometime soon added a kitchen. The sandwiches I mentioned earlier are $4 each ($3 until last week), while the beef and chicken shawarmas are $5. These are a recent addition and more than worth the price. The whole place has got a much needed facelift recently and looks so much more inviting. In addition to sandwiches, there's a whole menu of chicken ($6) and beef ($7) curry dishes, and stew- all of which come with complementary rice. There's also biryani which is pretty mediocre, but it's my only culinary complaint here. I don't care about this place not being too tidy. In fact, I think it's good for me. Builds my immunity. And character. The place, of course, also has halal chicken, beef, mutton (on request), various ready-made spices, lots of Arab and Pakistani snacks, tea, sauces, soda, sweets, breads, pickles, etc. My only major complaint with the place is the sub-par service when it gets busy. There aren't any dedicated servers so be prepared to wait for up to 30min for your food or meat at peak hours. But all in all, I'm so glad to have THIS place exist THIS close to college campus. This hidden gem adjacent to UC has cheap, delicious tandoori chicken rolls. For only $3 you get excellently spiced, huge pieces of chicken kabob with vegetables and a garlic yogurt-based sauce all wrapped in a warm, fluffy naan. They have other typical Indian/Pakistani curries and dishes as well, but the rolls are so good I haven't expanded my menu choices yet. It is also a market so you can pick up some traditional south asian spices and products, as well as halal meat. Definitely recommend for a cheap, quality lunch. read more

They are also a butcher shop that sells good quality meat. I wanted lamb but didn't know much about the different cuts...the guy had patience explaining the different uses of different cuts, how to prepare them, etc. They have a menu with other items, but those items aren't always available, but with a $3 sandwich being a backup, I personally don't mind. The chicken and naan are even made in a tandoori oven. I eat lunch here weekly and I can't praise this place enough. Even the grocery portion of the small market is great! I was searching for a cookie that I grew up with called Parle-G and asked the store owner if they had it in stock. They unfortunately didn't, but I noticed the cookies showed up a couple weeks later. Al Madina is a great place to get a good meal. It's a little shop that sells a few grocery type items as well a small restaurant. You can get food to go, but you can also sit and eat. They have a few small tables all side by side so that it looks like one long table. It's communal seating and there has always been someone sitting there when I went in. I have been twice and the first time I just picked up some lamb curry to go. It was a good amount of food consisting of white rice and big chunks of lamb cooked in a curry sauce. As soon as I started to eat it I noticed the quality of the meat. I never get lamb that good from a restaurant unless it is a very nice restaurant and this place is a hole in the wall. The next time I went, I sat inside and ate. I ordered the kebab roll. It is made with ground meat which is formed on a skewer and cooked in the oven. Then it is placed in a piece of flat bread with some vegetables. The guy working asked if I wanted the spicy sauce and I said yes. When I bit into the roll I was greeted with an explosion of flavor. The meat is spiced so well and the sauce was flavorful and had some decent heat (spiciness) to it. The old man who is always working there is very friendly. I will point out that the service is a little slow and it can take a little while to get your food but you can watch them cook it right in front of you. They also only take cash so be prepared or get ready to run to the nearest ATM while your food is cooking. But neither of these things would ever keep me away. The food is too good to ignore. And the kebab roll is one of the best sandwiches I have ever eaten and it only costs a few dollars. I will definitely come here again and again. After having eaten there, I later found out why the lamb was so good. I know a couple who goes there to buy fresh lamb. Al Madina gets lamb delivered from the Amish twice a week. Fresh local lamb is unbeatable. I have recommended this to others and my father has since gone in and purchased lamb from them as well. I was told that the lamb sells out quickly and that you have to go the day it is delivered. This place is definitely a hidden gem. read more

This was my first visit here after a friend told me about it earlier this week. I got there at about 11:30 and there were only two people ahead of me, so no line at that time. I ordered the beef sandwich and the falafel sandwich each was $3. That was honestly the best $6 that I have ever spent on any food that left me full. All of the meats and falafel were hot and fresh, and they made the bread for the wrap sandwiches while I was waiting to order, so it couldn't have been more fresh. Always looking for diverse food in Cincinnati and we have found a Lebanese spot! Customer service was great. They offered us to try the special of the day. It was delicious and full of flavor. I was a regular customer here for more than 2 years and remember this place very fondly. I went to school at UC and Al-Madina was just a 2 minute walk . It's a perfect place to grab a quick meal and buy some asian groceries. I'd highly recommend the paneer-chickpeas curry and chicken sandwich made with fresh bread(Naan) and Kabab style chicken. The downside is that it is not well organized ( cluttered with goods), and sometimes you may have to wait a good 30 minutes especially on weekends, but i think it's worth it considering the good cheap food.
