If you haven't been here during lunch do yourself a favor and go. It's a Pakistani and Indian market but they ell fresh hot food as well. I had the Kafta and my co-workers had the arab version of the gyro who name eludes me currently. The bread was cooked in a ceramic oven and all made by hand. It was so soft with a bit of crunch on the edges. I loved everything about my selection. I took it to go but I started eating it before I left the market. I have to go back to try other things now. My favorite quick lunch spot in Clifton! Super fast, great prices, and amazing food. I come here about once per week with my colleagues and it's always a crowd pleaser. My usual is a meat shawarma (beef/lamb combo), extra spicy . It is super low key, and they don't even make you pay until you are satisfied with your meal. All new remodeled space! The old school charm where you couldn't quite tell if the store was open due to lots of boxes in the window is gone! Recently replaced by new layout, ceiling-mounted menu, and more staff. The long canteen style tables are gone with 4 little round tables for a quick bite. Groceries are still there, with delicious feta available to buy en block, as is the halal butcher shop at the back. A little gem for those in the know. Onto the delicious hot food. Many come for a sandwich. A freshly toasted pita (you can see the dough being rolled), with generous helpings of falafel, grilled chicken cubes (tawaaf, more delicious than the sliced ), lamb, beef options as the main finished with your choice of salad and dressing. You are then presented with a neatly rolled sandwich to go or stay awhile and enjoy the chilled casual atmosphere. To go with the brand new lighting and open layout, there are now all new menu options: baba ganouch, hummus, more salads, spicy potatoes, kibbe (minced lamb). We tried an off-menu platter. The smoked eggplant was incredible with a rich smokey flavor than lingered after the eggplant had melted away. The red cabbage salad had crunch, tang, acidity and good oily flavors. Each mouthful was a flavor adventure. Who said vegetables are boring? Don't be afraid to ask for your own combinations off the menu or ask if you are unfamiliar. They used to literally make garlic naan as you enjoyed your biryani. There is a nice sense of community here. People hold the door for you and are polite. Good for take out, sit-down flavorful quick bites at a great price. Not so great for a large group to sit down. Wow! This is such a hidden gem in this city. The food is fresh and authentic. I was talking to one of the owners who said the chef was brought in from NYC to make this stuff. I tried all their dishes and everything tastes great! Their meats are savory. Their falafels are great too! I preferably like their sandwiches since the bread is made on the spot but their platters ate great too. I would recommend this place to anyone who is passing by. We had the most delicious chicken schwarma plate and an appetizer plate and could not have been more pleased. The appetizer plate had generous portions of delicious hummus, baba ganoush, falafels, dolmas, flavorful rice , tabouli salad and a sort of pickled red cabbage salad and fresh large thin pitas. So, like wow! Came to this place for a quick bite with my sisters and we all got the kebabs. Two were chicken and one was beef. The line seemed slightly disorganized but I loved that it was a hole in the wall and offered kebabs for $3 a piece! It was a steal. When you walk or drive by the market, it's on the dingy, non-modern side. This is no hipster paradise. But don't let that stop you! This is a true diamond in the rough. It's part market, part eatery and the (Pakistani/Middle Eastern) eats here are cheap but really good! I've been here twice now, once to eat in, and once for take-out, and both ways were delicious. Each time, I've gotten a beef and a chicken roll - $3! How can you beat that price? It's wrapped in pita bread and topped with lettuce, and a couple of different sauces. I believe the beef comes with a garlic sauce and the chicken comes with a different sauce. Both can come with a green and a red sauce - some sort of hot sauce with the green being a little more spicy. The menu isn't extensive - I'd say there are probably less than 10 options to choose from, but as long as you do a good job with them, I have no qualms with that. Can't wait to come back and try the falafel and the biryani. The service is fast and polite. The older gentleman smiles as he takes your order, happy to start making your meal. The market features Middle Eastern and Indian spices, shelf-stable groceries, breads, and desserts. The prices are comparable to the other Indian grocery markets around town, and Jungle Jim's so you're getting a good deal either way. The admittedly worst part of the market is the location. It's in Corryville, right across from the Walgreens/Kroger complex. The area around it seems sketch, but as long as you keep your wits about you, and don't let the rolls distract you, you'll be fine. read more

Al-Madina is an Indo-Pak grocery store/eatery/butcher shop. A rare combo indeed. I can easily say that Al-Madina is one of the best Indo-Pak eateries in Cincinnati. I have been going to Al-Madina thrice a week for the last 3 years. The owner, Mr.Imtiaz is one of the nicest and genuine restaurant owners I have met. Actually he isn't that old as others have mentioned (He is in his 40s). I have worked at a couple of restaurants and after seeing what goes on behind the closed kitchen doors, I always trust an open kitchen where you get to see what actually goes into your meal. Al-Madina is one such place as the kitchen is right in front of you. You also get to customize your meal as much as you want. This is probably the only place where you can get authentic Indian food around UC (without adding cream, butter etc.). Imtiaz is always polite and patient enough to cook a meal according to your preferences. The shop is located right opposite to Walgreens' parking lot on Corryville. It is like a hole in the wall and don't expect a proper seating as it is not a full-blown restaurant. He has like 4 tables lined up inside and it should be good enough to catch a quick bite or two. The store has a limited menu but all the items I have tried there so far have been exceptionally good. The Naan(Pita Bread) and meat are cooked fresh using a Tandoor oven multiple times a day. I will list some of my personal favorites there 1. Chicken roll $3 2. Falafel roll $3 3. Ginger Chicken curry $6 4. Veg Biryani $4 5. Chicken Biryani $6 6. Non-veg lunch special $6 (comes with a chicken curry, Naan, rice, salad and 4 Chicken tandoori pieces) The only problem with the place is that it might get over-crowded sometimes and the wait time might go up as much as 30 minutes for a simple order. For first timers, don't let the look and location of Al-Madina fool you. Go in and you will really be surprised at the quality of food being prepared there. If that is not enough then I don't know what is :P I come here regularly because my boyfriend is obsessed with the chicken shwarma. Like as dreams about it! We always get the chicken sandwiches spicy. They come wrapped in a fresh naan with juicy flavor. If the beef kabob is available (which is rare during regular school times since this is by UC), you must get it. The beef has lots of herbs and is very good! $3 chicken and kabob rolls are hard to beat! With fresh bread out of the oven and spices to make your mouth water, this place is a great stop for lunch or dinner at a low price. The owner has a reputation in the community for being hardworking, with fair prices and quality products. There are other items on the menu, but I only come here for the rolls. The store also offers a variety of spices and products used mostly in Indian, Pakistani, and Mediterranean cooking. I usually take my rolls to go, but there are a few tables and chairs for dining in as well. The place is small and is more of a mini-mart/grocery than a restaurant. I'm a big fan of the owner and the store, so I recommend Al-Medinas to those looking for a quick bite to eat or some spices/products you might not find in the average grocery store. read more
