First off the convenience store is open till midnight as shown on Yelp but they close the kitchen at 10 pm. We made this mistake the first time we tried to eat here so get here before 10 pm if you want to eat their food! Anyways, when we finally got to eat here we ordered the Hummus Supreme and I have to say it was delicious. I'm not sure if I'm ready to say its better than Niko Niko's but it definitely is comparable and for a better value. I will definitely be coming back to try their gyro plate and other offerings and maybe then I'll be ready to say its better than Niko Niko's. I highly recommend anyone that likes Mediterranean food to give this place a try. It's inside a convenience store so it definitely has a divey feel to it. I strolled into Al's last week looking to buy a pack of gum and a cold drink, not expecting to find the aroma of mediterranean food swirling around my olfactory senses. Since it was lunchtime, I figure I would give it a shot. I'm going to give it to you straight, I have never had such a tasty gyro in my life! I think they must have packed a full half pound of lamb into that warm pita bread, and their sauce practically put me in a trance! Al's Quick Stop is a victim of its own popularity. I deleted my original 4 star review and replaced it with this update: Food not as good and prices much higher. Even worse, Uber delivery drivers get priority over regular customers. Recently waited for 10 minutes to be acknowledged by the counter guy and cook at Al's while they served all the delivery driver customers, most of whom came in after me. As I walked out (still unacknowledged) the guy at the counter tried to stop me. Too late. I won't be back. read more

My grandfather said he's been going to Al's Quick Stop since the 1960's! He said he did not remember them having a restaurant, so we went by to try the food, and wow! quick update: gyros here are awesome. they fry up the gyro meat to order so it's hot and crispy and they don't skimp on fixin's like tzaziki, onions, tomatoes. tacos are kind of strange. tortillas come out of a bag and are heated on the flat top. variety of meats to choose from--fajita, carne guisada, pastor, etc.--and they'll ask you if you want shredded lettuce and tomato on top. WOW, I had the gyro and asked if they would put a fried egg on top...and they did and it was so marvelous! THE BEST GYRO I HAVE EVER HAD! A good amount of meat, nice fluffy pita bread, fantastic seasonings! The place is very clean and bright and colorful, I didn't have a chance to really explore but it also looked like they had a lot of hard to find Micro beer and other neat stuff for sale. This is a corner stop, but they have several tables to sit down and eat. The service is very fast and super friendly too. You can also buy some nice meat, just like at a butcher shop! Compared to our favorite places that serve the same kind of food we were not very impressed and will not go back. After 2 visits to Al's Quick Stop, I feel pretty comfortable in saying this place is amazing. On my first visit I had the Gyro Plate and while I can see what some people are saying regarding the quality of the meat, it still tasted just as good as anything that would come out of a Niko Niko's. The plate also comes with with a generous helping of some great hummus, salad, and some pita. I was very pleased with the entire plate. On my second visit I had the Hummus Supreme, and oh my goodness. This bad boy is a plate of hummus with a generous helping of gyro right in the center. It really made my day. Definitely one of the best Shwarma and Gyro I have had in Houston. The meat was impossibly delicious, moist and chock full of spices. Their bread is pretty divine as well along with the seasoned meat and toppings they put inside their wraps. It's inconspicuously packed inside a random gas stations on Waugh and are open pretty late (I arrived there around 9:30-10pm at night and they were still open). I would always come here and get the "gyro plate" The price was excellent, and the amount of hot fresh gyro meat, tomatoes and onions was *quite* generous. Enough for two meals, really. Under the new-menu-regime and they've gotten stingy with the meat. And the onions. And the tomatoes. So I looked for a restaurant that could deliver quickly and found Al's. This is definitely a Houston hidden gem, and most people probably won't know about it unless a Houstonian gives you the inside scoop! The establishment is actually a convenience store, located in the Montrose area. I joined a couple of work colleagues there for lunch one day and it was delicious! I ordered the Chicken Shawarma plate, and I have never tasted chicken so flavorful! It was seasoned to perfection and the portion size was generous. I was also glad because I felt like my meal was fairly healthy, since they serve it with rice and hummus.
