My girl and I picked up a rental to head up to the Grand Canyon. Rob, Syed and Mike were extremely helpful. I had a convertible booked which I was excited about. However, it was delayed and give our 5 suitcases Syed offer us another car to keep us happy. I was pretty flexible in what we drove with a few exceptions (of course my girl would define it as not-flexible). Syed was vital in ensuring we got into a car quickly and one that we liked. I had rented year and years at Hertz: however decided to try Alamo. I have to say i'm Impressed. The variety of cars in the fleet was great and the key folks I spoke with were very helpful. REMEMBER THE ALAMO!! Flew 2000 miles to Mesa Arizona. Went to pick up my rental car reservation. Agent greeted me and said "oh I see you have a profile with us already so this will be fast. Let me just verify this license first with my manager." What? What do you need to verify? You have cut your license so I'm not sure it's valid What are you talking about? I trimmed a millimeter off the edge of the lamination so that it would fit in my wallet. I didn't cut my license. The entire license is still there. And it's still valid. Oh, I'm sure this won't be a problem. We just like full transparency in advance with our customers. Umm, Full transparency was 2000 miles ago. Not When I'm standing at the counter to pick up my car and it's 104° outside and you're telling me you're not going to give me a car and I'm going to have to hitchhike. That is not transparency. Oh, I'm sure it won't be a problem, sir Returns from the back office. It's a problem. Manager said no. So you're telling me I cannot pick up my rental car. You have my profile. I was just here six months ago. Why was This not a problem then? Well, that agent was probably just trying to be nice to you, sir Well, I'm asking you to be nice to me one more time please. I'm far from home, don't know anybody here and need a car. Sorry, there's nothing I can do. Corporate rules. So I left and went to the Hertz counter, they had no cars available. Great. Thank God for Avis, the counter two doors down. They had a car and had no problem with my drivers license. Had Avis not had any cars available, I would've been stranded. And Alamo could not have cared less. I would say, I will never rent another car from Alamo ever again. But apparently, that's not an option.. They don't accept valid drivers licenses with trimmed edges along the edge of the lamination. Lest you think I'm leaving something out, I have since showed my license to every person I've met on this trip and told this story to (which is anybody who would listen). And they all laughed. Nobody could find anything a reasonable person would consider wrong with that license. You can bet I will never forget the Alamo. And I strongly suggest you do likewise. PS: Alamo customer service...please don't bother responding to this review. There is nothing you can say to reassure me into taking another risk like that on Alamo. If I could give a zero I would! We went down for vacation and got a car, well after driving for 10 miles the service vehicle light came on so back to trade vehicles. First the guy switching vehicles was not nice and seemed annoyed by us not wanting to drive a vehicle for a week with a service light on. Second we load everything to the other vehicle, which was a serious downgrade from what we rented. Third my husband accidentally left his wallet in the center console. As soon as he realized it we drove back to the airport and lo and behold it was nowhere to be found! The manager on duty said they would look at cameras and did not hear anything back. After a week we called the customer service line. First person I tried to talk to hung up on me, second person told us we would get a call back within 24-48 hrs. We finally got a call back after 2 weeks and all we got is a "I'm sorry". I would highly recommend going through a different car rental company than this one. They do not hold their employees accountable or do anything to help. read more

The manager assured us that it would only be a 15 minute wait which I didn't believe- But it was absolutely correct. I visited Phoenix a couple months ago and rented a premium car with Alamo. The lady at the front desk was very friendly, knowledgeable about their inventory, and not pushy trying to offer accidental insurance. She also knew the local area and suggested some places I could visit. The real 5 star rating comes from when I went to pick up my rental car. I was helped by an Alamo employee named Henry. Henry was absolutely amazing with his customer service. I am a wheelchair bound vet and I sometimes have problems transferring from my wheelchair to a rental car. Henry took his time helping me find a good car. He searched the lot for possible choices and had a couple brought around to me. I ended up choosing an Audi A6. The vehicle was amazing. Very clean, low mileage, comfortable, and great performance. Thank you, Alamo, for helping to ease the stress of traveling! read more

Lola was very helpful in getting me a car and upgrading the size for a decent price. Drove out of the lot in a new Chevy Equinox and it made the 2.5 hour drive to Sedona a lot more comfortable for an additional $25/day. Car was clean and drove nicely!. Original rental was booked through Allegiant Airlines so Lola let me know i could call Alamo to give them my Insider number and get points for the rental cost. The return was really easy and as we cleaned up the small amount of garbage in the car from snacks and such, we were told we can just leave it all, by one of the Alamo employees. (Which we didn't do, but that was nice of him!) 2/6/18 Update - I called Alamo as Lola suggested, but was told their Insider program just gives you discounts, and you don't get to tally points, so I'm not sure what Lola meant, but good to know for my future bookings! read more

Horrible, we will never rent a car again after our experience with this business. My husband was driving our rental late at night, waiting for the green light at an intersection when a teenager turned too sharply and hit our rental (the kid was very apologetic and I felt bad for him). We did everything we were supposed to: explained the details to police and Alamo, gave them the kid's insurance information, and let our insurance know about the situation once they were open. Our insurance was not at all worried about us being found liable and Arizona's law even states that if you're not at fault in an accident your insurance can't be charged. Alamo decided to find us at fault anyway for over $12,000.00. We are in the process of working with our insurance to refute this, but can't fix the months of stress this has caused all for something clearly not our fault. read more

The staff was very helpful and they gave us a weekend special upgrade to a Cadillac XTS. That was the best part as the car was new with just 2K on it. Very comfortable. My wife had rented a car for me online, and I arrived at the car rental lines only to find that the Alamo lines led to two kiosks! Before I could despair, a very helpful gal walked me and the next person in line through the process, which was quick and clean. The next step was to walk to the rental stand located about 100 yards away outside. As I approached the small building, I was met by another Alamo employee offering a bottle of water. I rented a vehicle and there was no inspection walk around offered at pick up and I was told by the employee to just take photos of any damages to the car. The lot where the vehicle was located was around 150 yards away. The 1st one they gave me smelled like weed. So I had to walk all the way back which was not easy given I just had Achilles' tendon surgically repaired to let them know I wanted a different car because I didn't want to be liable for smoking in the vehicle. 2nd car was given to me and after another wait of checking out and 300 yards of walking I am now past my initial time of pickup. After I finally get second car checked out and walk another 150 yards in the Arizona heat to new vehicle which puts me around 450 yards of walking, I'm losing about 30 minutes of drive time and lots of energy. 2nd vehicle was filthy, I don't think they touched the inside of the car, there were dings, dents and scratches everywhere on the exterior and I'm losing another 15 minutes or so inspecting and taking pictures of all the damage on my own. I didn't have enough time to walk back and go through the process again otherwise I would have demanded another car. Fast forward to drop vehicle off, drop off station was closed at the time in which my rental was due back, so had to park across the street in there after hours lot which you guessed it required a lot more walking. To top it all off I drop the keys off to what I though was after hours to an employee at the desk and I later get an invoice sent to my email that said I dropped the vehicle off 1.5 hours late where they charged me an extra $42! What a joke. They should pay me after this. I'm pissed, never again will I rent a vehicle from here. read more

I came into the Mesa Gateway Airport yesterday, from out of state, to see my dad in a memory care center. Cathy was working at the counter, and greeted me warmly and sincerely. I had a reservation, and Cathy expeditiously found it and got me set up for the car rental. When she found out the reason for my visit, she very kindly suggested a vehicle that would be easier for my 87 year old dad to negotiate. An unexpected, yet kindly service rendered by Cathy, an agent at the Alamo desk at Mesa Gateway. I will definitely use Alamo on future visits. If you're a Costco Wholesale member, you can even book an Alamo/National rental car for additional savings..... Another tip from the Alamo agent. I originally wrote a one star review. That was more about my horrible experience with the Alamo Claims Department and Alamo 'customer care'. We have been renting from this Alamo location since 2008. The service had always been great at the counter. The manager did his very best to make things right with the issue regarding the Claims Department. He was very professional, even when I was losing it on him about things he was not in control of. I appreciate the manager's calm demeanor. I eventually came around to acknowledge Phoenix/Mesa Airport Alamo didn't fail me, the claims department did. They are belligerent pigs to deal with, and Alamo 'customer care' really doesn't, until you write a negative review. At that point, they are all over your issues/concerns. H, the manager at Phoenix/Mesa, single handedly brought us back as the loyal customers we were. Well done, H. You are awesome! read more

Not happy. Picked up our rental in the dark and was never offered a chance to inspect the car. Everything was fine until we turned in the car. The agent noticed that the front bumper had been scratched and said they would have to file a damage report. There had been no collision while I was driving and I'm uncertain how it could have happened while parked given where the damage was on the bumper. Now I'm hit with an almost $500 bill! Never again! We rented a car in a package with Allegiant airlines. When we arrived in Mesa, we upgraded the rental car to a Camaro with the understanding that it would be an additional $12 per day. Much to our surprise, we were charged full price for the original rental AND full price for the upgraded rental. When we complained, we were told that we were not the only ones to complain about this sales tactic. Not good. The representative was very nice at the initial communication was great. I picked up a van while my family was in town so we could all ride together for the weekend. I walked to the parking lot where there was no attendant and I grabbed the van and drove off. I was on an extremely tight schedule and about 15 minutes after driving the van I started to notice how it had not been cleaned and there was an unpleasant smell coming from the air conditioning. Again me being on a tight schedule I did not have time to go back and try to rectify this. The following day I drove to the Grand Canyon with my family and the brakes went out. We had to downshift the entire way down the mountain. The brakes were shaking so bad that we could not use them at all. I returned the van and explained the concern to the agent and she gave me a quick apology and threw me a $25 off gift certificate. And seemed that she didn't care very much. I paid through Allegiant when I booked my ticket and then paid an additional in $70 in "taxes." Absolutely scandalous and a complete rip off. (Approx. the same price as the original rental). Of course, when I requested a refund to take my business elsewhere, they blame it all on Allegiant...who, surprise!!!...they don't have a phone number or contact info for. Absolutely terrible business. I plan to make this known in every possible location I can so that I can prevent this from happening to more people. I was not happy with the cost. I was told $156 for a compact car for 3 days and when I landed at the airport I was told I had to pay another $154. Was not in my budget for the trip. Was very disappointed! Had just rented a full size SUV for the weekend from Enterprise for $211 so I thought I was getting a good deal for 3 days at $156 but I was wrong and when I called to see about returning early after just 1 day I was told all I would get back was $78! Reservation, selection of vehicle, pick up, and drop off was effortless. Staff was friendly and accommodating, especially the gentleman on drop off. This could have easily been a 5 star rating, however, the inside of the vehicle was filthy. I'm pretty sure the staff forgot to clean. There was a large smudge on the inside bottom portion of the windshield that took some elbow grease and time to remove. Couldn't figure out what it was. There was a medium size wad of green gum still affixed to the passenger mat. The dash was dirty, and the console in the middle was absolutely filthy with splashed soda stains and food crums. I needed a rental car due to my dad being in the ICU in Scottsdale. I was a little stressed. The Alamo staff at the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport were not made aware of my situation. I add this information to make a point. From the minute I approached the desk in the airport until I dropped the car off 3 days later, I was treated so well.
