Was looking for a bespoke 3-piece suit for my wedding and after some research found Alan David. It was clear from the initial appointment for consultation and fitting that this was an outfit that did things the old-fashioned (correct) way with an eye for every detail. During the course of this experience I had the pleasure of dealing with almost everyone in the office - one better than the next - and all a credit to their profession. Alan himself walked me through selection of fabric and styling and his capable staff then took my every measurement. Approximately one month later I returned for preliminary fitting and despite what looked close to a perfect fit, some very minor adjustments were noted & made before final fitting 2 weeks later. Shortly thereafter, I stood waiting on my bride to be, decked out in my new suit. While all eyes were on her for most of the day, I also received many compliments on what can only be described as a simply fantastic suit that fit me like a glove. Was an absolute pleasure to wear, enjoyable in the way that only a good suit, fine watch or new car might be. I am already planning to return later this summer to have several more suits made - as once you go bespoke you will never look at an off-the-rack suit again. Is more money admittedly - but undoubtedly worth it for a hand-crafted suit, attention to detail, perfect fit, and simply the overall experience. 2 months ago it was my wedding and I needed my wedding dress to be altered since it was not my exact size and I love my dresses to be tight on me. I was passing by Madison Street and noticed a sign Alan David Custom and that they are doing alterations. So I decided to walk in and ask if they are doing alterations on wedding dresses, and wanted to know what their specialty is. I walked in and I was so happy I did I saw they had so many wedding dresses and real nice ones and they also had other dresses they were working on. I felt really comfortable that I wanted to talk to them make an appointment and bring my dress in for an estimate. I went back the following day and paid the deposit and left my dress. They were beyond nice and beyond professional. The best part was it was so close to my friend's house that she could ever pick up my dress for me after it was ready. I am so happy I found this place now I am their regular with all our alteration me and my husband. Remarkable work, good service, and I have referred a lot of people to them already. Been coming to Alan David now for about 4 years on and off. The reason I say on and off is because I can't always afford it so I have to downgrade and go elsewhere. It should be noted that Alan David is probably the most reasonable place in the city to buy an American made bespoke suit. But if you can afford it, will be the greatest suit you've ever had. Just picked up my 5th suit from them and it fits like a glove! The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly and they have an amazing selection of fabrics. My suit from Alan David is a game changer. The fit is absolutely perfect and the quality and craftsmanship applied is like nothing I ever owned. The process was seamless and extremely detailed - from the many measurements taken prior to the making of the suit to the fact that I actually had to do a second final fitting since the tailor discovered a very minor crease on the finished jacket that in an off-the-rack suit would have been considered a very normal occurrence. With three weeks before my wedding (I had a serious mishap at Mens Wearhouse and decided to go big league), they were able to pull together an amazing fitting and looking suit. With custom competition ranging from $300 to $10,000, it's hard to be completely objective relative to the price, but I was extremely happy with the service and product. Excellent service! Bespoke suits fit incredibly well. On the pricier side vs suit supply, mysuit etc (both made to measure not bespoke), but well worth it for the fit and quality. 3 suits, 1 sports coat, 1 overcoat and 10+ shirts so far from Alan David. Customer service is great, minor problem (shirt) was taken care of quickly and without any pushback. Items shipped to work address if needed. Can rush an item if needed. Short of time - Have left the men's wedding clothing to last as how difficult can it be to find Tuxedo accessories like a waist coat jacket or a tie - well we did leave to the end where Barneys etc did not have what we were looking for. we found them on Yelp and went to their store for Tux waist coat and Tie and we could not have been happier with their customer service and quick turn around time for two sets ordered. A very professional shop with great staff who hold your hand every step of the way. This was my first custom made suit so I was kind of lost. The salesman asked me all the right questions and helped pick my fabric and color. The tailors were fantastic and even worked around my bum shoulder which was in a sling due to a recent surgery. Don't be fooled by the slightly seedy Midtown office building, where the doorman gives you a sideways look as you wait for the elevator. It takes you to the seventh floor, past your usual shlocky looking law office door down the hall and left and into Alan David's showroom. It's not new, it doesn't look like much, nobody butters you up by offering you a glass of scotch, and there are no other allegedly bespoke-y accoutrements that distract you from the goods (and the cost of which surely is baked into the price of your suit). They're all business at Alan David, and they know exactly what they're doing. The salesman was an older gentlemen, who listened patiently to my ramblings and showed me a bunch of nice fabrics in various qualities. He was very good at explaining their features and pros and cons (he also discouraged me from looking at some more expensive, very high thread yarns because the fabric tends to wrinkle quickly making it not the most practical). The fitter too was an older gentleman, with an Italian accent that conjured up images of his apprenticeship in a Naples tailoring shop, resulting in confidence that he too knows what he is doing. And he is. I negotiated some details, such as a barchetta pocket (sigh, I too am a sucker for men's sartorial fads), and Alan, the owner, was nice, helpful, knowledgeable and patient about it. (One complaint: I came to a meeting and waited in vain for 25 minutes, while he was speaking on the phone in his office.) I also had to wait about five weeks (strikes me as at the upper end of normal for a garment that is made from scratch) until I got a fitting of the "raw" suit. During this so-called basted fitting some details were adjusted here and there - not much. I'm 5'11'' and 165 lbs, so it's not that hard (although, in the spirit of oversharing, I have sloping shoulders and slouch a little - they took care of it). The suits are made in Alan David's manufacturing shop in Queens, and not in China. While one can argue whether factory-made means it's totally bespoke (some say that means it must be all hand-sewn by one tailor), it's pointless in my view if the quality is there - it is, see below. Making the suit here may be a touch more expensive but alterations to the semi-final product will be made quicker and by the people who actually made the suit. Plus this supports a traditional trade (keep America great). It's all prepaid, so that requires a bit of a leap of faith the first time around, but I went by the many good reviews and was not disappointed. Now finally, the goods: First rate quality. My suit was made from a Zegna fabric (not cheap but worth it) and it fits like a glove. Wearing it I finally feel like a cross between an gentiluomo strolling down the streets of Milan and James Bond (never mind the sloping shoulders). The cut is contemporary, the proportions - width of lapel, placement of notch - match my frame, the stitching is pretty, and the lining contrasts nicely - fanciful but not too fanciful. (Alan pulled out a better lining fabric book when I was not too impressed with the standard offerings, and let me choose one of them, at no surcharge.) The detailing of the pants - waistband, buttons, reinforcement band above heel - and the inside pockets are "comme il faut", and as far as I can tell after a few outings in the suit very well tailored and moves with me nicely whether I walk or sit. I wear suits all the time and this one clearly is the best I've ever had. I fear I have to go back for more. read more

I needed a suit for my wedding, I rarely wear them because I am a very hard fit and like everything slim, really slim. I found Alan David online and gave it a shot. First they measured me which took a bit longer than I liked but they took zillions of measurements. I of course waited till the last minute and the suit came in 2 weeks later. I put it on for a first trying and it fit better than anything I had ever had before. What i loved is that they followed my instructions and make the suit armholes high and make the sleeves and shoulders narrow. I finally had a suit that fit. there were some minor adjustments like they had to shorten the sleeves but it was pretty much spot on. Then I tried on the pants. I thought I was in heaven. vey slim in the thighs, just the way I like it-not baggy or saggy at all!!!!!!! What I liked even more is the store owner (Allen) kept me up to date from the second I ordered until the final garment was ready. There were no surprises, just business as usaul. This is a phenomenal place to get a perfectly fitting suit. At 5'6 and a 28" waist, it is next to impossible to find something off the rack. I purchased two suits from Alan David Custom - a classic navy in December 2012 and a charcoal in April 2015. Alan and the staff remembered me even over two years later. Alan makes you feel at home the moment you walk in the door and answers your questions very patiently. He walks you through how the suit is constructed and guides you through the fabric options. The basted fitting where every thread is fussed over is truly an experience. Alan works within your budget and there is never an upsell. I have enjoyed Alan's product and service so much that I even brought a friend in who purchased a suit. This is a place where old world customer service and commitment to quality still live. Hi all, I heard about Alan David from my brother, I am very tall and skinny and difficult to fit. I called to get some back-round info and they seemed legit so I gave them a shot. I went a bit overboard purchasing 3 suits and 2 trousers. My off-the-rack size is 43 extra long and they don't exist anymore, nobody carries extra longs (I used to get them at Moe Ginsburg). The owner Alan first took me through a mindboggling array of fabrics but I finally settled on a super 110 fabric from Italy that supposedly is very sturdy. I got all 2 button-seems as if that's the new style, I always liked 3 button because I am tall but I have so many I went with their advise. I can tell you when the suits came in nothing ever fit me so well. I have very sloping shoulders and a long neck and Alan gave me a fit that made my shoulders look high without any excessive padding. I don't know how but all of a sudden my shoulders looked more square and the attention was away from my neck. I looked like a different person and the 2 button looked awesome, so much more modern, such a fresh look. I knew somebody would be able to fit me well with a custom suit but to fit as well as to flatter, it was almost asking too much. The pants also were great, skinny pants but not too skinny with a higher rise that made me look almost athletic (almost). I am so happy I stepped up and bought a blazer and some shirts, I needed to share also how courteous the staff was, especially Alan. If there was one thing I would change it would be to bring the prices down a bit but they explained to me that everything is made in the USA and that you can't put a price on quality. The suits were $1,700 each but I look so good and I am sure they will last a long time. read more

I'm a large guy and pretty hard to fit, yet I was measured and fitted in a great Bespoke suit, I'm also a fashion designer and tailor myself, I am self employed with no affiliation to this shop. I just wanted to establish that I know a good cut and fit. This is very old school proper suits. Yes they are no Seville row, but that's not what I want and if I wanted that I would ask for that specifically. I'ts custom so you can have them make it anyway you want. When in doubt just bring some pictures with you. read more

I was looking for a custom tux for my wedding and found Alan David as a bespoke option compared to many places that were made to measure. At 6'8 I am a difficult size to say the least. Everything about them was absolutely perfect. For bespoke, I couldn't believe their prices were essentially the same (this is even before the $100 first tux discount) as many M2M places. The entire process was incredibly fast and easy. In about 30 min you pick out fabric and they take a number of detailed measurements. Then there was another maybe 15 min try on and fine tuning and then the tux was ready to go. It was absolutely perfect and I loved every detail and suggestion they offered. I had it all squared away about a month before the wedding, and this was definitely one less thing to worry or think about. I could not have been happier with my wedding tux and I would highly recommend to anyone looking for formal wear in NYC. I will definitely be back for suits or sport coats! read more

High quality suit for a reasonable price!

I am revising my previous review which was for 4 stars to now reflect a 5 star experience at Alan David Custom. I have now purchased my first custom suit from Alan David Custom as well as several sport coats and multiple orders of dress shirts. I am really pleased with both the quality and fit of the clothes that were made for me. The great fit is a result of the individualized patterns that were made for me based on numerous measurements that were taken of me by Alan David's measuring experts. I will definitely be a repeat and loyal customer going forward. I would highly recommend them and believe they stand out from other similar services in the area. As some articles have accurately pointed out, what you are getting from Alan David is superbly-fitting clothes that are of very high quality, with excellent diversity of choice in terms of fabric quality and origin. Plus, you benefit from the services of a highly experienced team. Other places offer more of an explicit "buying experience" e.g. glasses of scotch, leather couches and paintings of fox hunting, etc. Don't take your eye off the ball; I am pleased to go to a place that prioritizes clothes and personalized fit and service, not the "experience" of being in some fancy showroom. And they've been round for a long time for good reason. I would advise potential customers to seek to have contact/meet with Alan (who is the owner), who is often on site. Alan was able to provide me with transparency around when my garments would ready and also educated me in the process. He is very responsive and will go the extra mile for you. I also appreciated the transparency of the sales team. They answered my questions in detail about how my clothes would be made and by whom, as well as how they oversaw the process. The sales team were never pushy and offered me good, practical advice. I have worked with David and DK primarily. I appreciate that they will provide candid feedback if they do not think a particular style choice will work well on you. I do have a few quibbles/constructive feedback. There is room for improvement on communicating when clothes will be ready for a basted fit or for pick-up. I don't necessarily think this is the fault of those who answer the phones, but rather a systems issue. On a few occasions I would call to see when I could have a basted fitting or whether my shirts were ready for pick-up. On each such occasion the person answering the phone would "check the computer" but the computer would not have much, if any, information to say about my order. So on one occasion I was told that my "shirt" was ready when I had ordered many shirts and it wasn't clear where those additional shirts were. On another occasion I was told that my suit was ready, but I had requested a basted fitting. Again, there was no information about that on the system and it took several calls for the team to confirm that I was indeed having a basted fitting and the suit wasn't actually ready. I found a way around this issue by dealing with Alan directly as he simply knows the most about the process given his deep experience and hands-on oversight. I should note that my suit and sports jackets required more time to be ready than is advertised on the website; in each case I did not mind because the quality of the clothes were superb and I cared most about that; I appreciated the labor that went into making them. Alan also helpfully explained to me that the time of delivery is going to be affected by when you place your order, the kind of fabrics you are using, etc. In a similar vein the prices on the website don't necessarily reflect the true high end range for custom suits. I didn't mind paying higher than the range for great quality and again it's going to be dependent on the fabrics that you choose, among other factors. The team will be transparent about what goes in the total "all-in" price. I am ultimately a really satisfied customer. Thank you! read more

Initially, I was somewhat shocked at the pricing....it is expensive! I had never purchased a custom suit and felt it was time!
