Today I ordered my 2nd suit from Alan after a colleague told me about him 2 months ago. Was in the market for a nice trim cut suit and since I was going to be in New York City (I'm from California) I figured I would give them a try. Today the owner Alan was kind enough to open the shop an hour early, as I was only in New York for a few days and had all kinds of meetings scheduled. We met at 9 AM, and hour before the store opened. Calmly we went through the process and this time I learned the difference between full blown bespoke and made-to-measure. Alan had creates a pattern just for me on my last visit as opposed to taking a pre-cut pattern and trying to alter it so it fits me. I am pretty particular so this was a big plus. We look through many fabrics including Holland and Sherry and some other famous meals but eventually settled on a nice Loro Pina double-breasted blue pinstripe. When I was ordering the 1st one, I thought it was a little more than I wanted to spend at $2500 but I was willing based on the fact it was full custom and that it would be receiving a basted fitting so at least I was confident the fit and style would look great. And boy did it ever and exactly why I'm back for #2. The suit came in about three weeks later, all basted up. I will post the pictures when I'm back in Cali. Hardly any adjustments to make. I wanted the arms a little trimmer and the pants bottoms a bit longer but other than that it looks great. They finish the suit and shipped it to my home. I found Alan David online and I decided to step up and get a real custom suit. I had always went the made-to-measure route before, but I wanted something special this time around. Alan took me through an array of fabrics finally settling on a gorgeous blue narrow strip. The price was fair, not cheap, but not as crazy as it set me back $1500 but that's really only a few hundred more than I usually spend. I was measured and recommend you get measured by a gentleman fitter named Cosmo (like in Seinfeld) and he also took me through a ton of styling options. We went with a slim cut 2 button jacket with no pleats or cuffs on the trousers. I thought through my research it would be a slimming look for me About 4 weeks later my suit arrived. Would you believe I literally could have walked out with it. There was a slight adjustment needed with the length of the pant and just to take the waist in a half inch. The jacket was spectacular, really, much nicer fitting than anything I own. This place I can tell, really knows how to fit, also by the way there were 3 other clients in at the same time and everyone was just hanging with Alan and the staff. Will be back for more. Well, I waited to write the review until I got my suit. So, I just got my first fully custom suit delivered and here goes. I came in for my official fitting and Alan was very professional, knowledgeable and we had a great conversation about how I currently dress, how many suits I have and what I was looking for. I then realized that Alan likes to get to know who his client is, to better help guide the process and deliver the suit your expecting. We then went into what style and elements of the suit I wanted in my new suit.. ie. pocket flaps or not, real cuff buttons or the fake ones like on most off the shelf suits, etc. When you come in, there is always a smile and cold drink offered to make your time more relaxed. Alan had some of his people help measure. Each has their expertise and it seems they are a big fan of measure twice.. three times, and cut once! They take the time to make sure the measurements are precise and works for you and the style you choose. Once I got measured I came back when the bulk of the suit was complete for additional tweaking. for example, I wanted the jacket more fitted rather than standard... No Problem! They simply took it in, adjusted all the elements to ensure it looked great. I then came in to pick it up and I noticed on the shoulder, a few millimeter of what seemed like extra fabric... very hard to notice. When they were able to see what I saw, they took it in the back and fixed it on the spot! No stating, its no big deal, no telling me its the way I am standing, nope. Lets fix it here and now. I found Alan David when I started the search for my wedding tuxedo and dinner jacket. I was lucky to find them early on in the process and from jump street I was happy. Elsie was great first helping me set up the initial appointments and keeping me up to date regarding timelines for fittings and final pickup. From first appointment to final pickup it took about 2 months. Now take into consideration I had to get my pants and jackets refitted due to weight loss closer to the wedding and their ability to add another custom pair of pants with two weeks prior to the wedding. I'm an interior and lighting designer. Also a photographer. So I have been having some of my photos of lighting installations or light fixtures utilized as motifs for wallpapers. FUN. Got one paper up and said, "Oooh - I should have that as a SUIT!" Then a big design industry party was coming up, at a former legendary NYC nightclub, and the theme of the party begged for this suit. So without much lead time (I think 6-8 weeks before the party) I contacted Alan David. Many fittings and meetings later, one of the most amazing suits you've ever seen was made for my body. It was not cheap - mine was way more expensive than yours would be. I made drawings, had three different textiles, was very specific with how the pattern should align with itself across the three pieces of the suit. I was not an easy client! Probably their worst nightmare. They were all professional, friendly and helpful. And Man, What a Suit! It was such a crazy pattern with so much color I knew I had to have a refined, polished suit in order to not look like a clown. Alan David is the place to go if you want a custom tux/suit made. My fiancé wanted the best fit for a tuxedo for our wedding day. We found Alan David online and decided to go with them to custom make his tuxedo. We are not from/do not live in NYC and Alan David was very accommodating in our schedules to make the trip to NYC for his tux alterations, which I will add was not many. Their measurements were so exact his tuxedo barely needed any changes. The tux was a pure vision of what we wanted just based off photos from Pinterest and we couldn't be happier. After our last visit they shipped the tuxedo to us so we did not have to make the trip to pick it up and the tuxedo was flawless and carefully packaged to ensure no damage. I decided to set up to the plate to go from made to measure to a full custom suit. I have had made to measure before and was happy but I love clothing and I felt I should own at least one full bespoke garment to really see the difference. I was recommended to Alan David and did some research online and settled on giving them a shot. I had a very specific shade of blue in mind, not too dark but not too light with a bit of texture. I worked with David and we poured of that felt like hundreds of blues finally settling on a gorgeous Holland and Sherry in what feels like a year round weight. David told me that Holland and Sherry would drape nicely on me and it's a fabric that bounces back quickly which is good for me since I do a lot of traveling. David was solid but then I got to their ace measurement taker Jay (or Joris), he is French and he had my head spinning. He can really talk and he educated me a lot on the type of look I should be going for. The guy is straight out of GQ. Anyway, he took me through an array of style and lining options and I placed my order. About 4 weeks later the suit came in and WOW. First I loved the color. It did help that David had shown me a similar color that they had hanging for a different customer (recommend asking for that) but it was the fit that blew me away. So comfortable yet so slick, not like the boxy garments I was used to wearing. I was very pleased. Let me give you a little background about this place. The owner is the grandson of Moe Ginsburg, a store I used to shop in years ago so he is very tuned into the business. Their staff is quite professional, I liked every aspect although when I asked for water I felt perhaps the plastic cup they gave me was a bit cheesy being I was sending $2500. Its not a gorgeous showroom, they don't have gorgeous women trying to upsell you, they are very old fashioned and "by the book". Alan explained to me that he puts all his money into his fitters who take measurements because that is what it is all about. They are certainly not cheap but if you like high quality (the suits are all made here locally ) and a real professional staff then this place has all that. I live in Rhode Island, but after so many unfortunate "made to measure" experiences, I decided to travel to NYC to consult with Alan David Custom. I met with David who is a tailor by profession. We discussed my needs and lifestyle. I wanted to build a classic wardrobe from scratch and needed pieces that are timeless and versatile. David helped me choose incredibly versatile colors and fabrics. First, I ordered a pair of mid grey flannel pants with a blue blazer. We also chose an extremely soft, but incredibly durable grey and blue check sport coat in bamboo fabric with charcoal pants. David was extremely helpful not only in choosing fabrics, but also in styling the garments. It is very easy to forget yourself in the process of making a custom suit. After all, the options are unlimited, when it comes to styles of the lapels, pockets...etc. However, just because you can, does not mean you should. We went for classic notch lapels and flap pockets. I do not like wearing belts, so I wanted my pants with side adjusters. However, David advised me to go with side buttons, which was an extremely elegant option, compared to side adjusters which can get chunky sometimes and disrupt the silhouette. Then I met with the Master fitter, AKA "doctor" Gonzalo. The measuring process was extremely comprehensive. Gonzalo spent almost 45 minutes measuring every dimension and angle. I deferred to Gonzalo to make all the choices when it comes to lapel width, jacket length, sleeve length...etc. What I like about Alan David Custom is that they are extremely professional, talented, skilled and experienced. They can accommodate your requests, of course, when it comes to stylistic preferences, but I recommend heeding their advice and listening carefully. After 3-4 weeks my garments were ready for a first fitting. The jacket was impeccable. It fit like a glove, just like it is supposed to when you go the bespoke route. Nothing like my prior made to measure experiences. No pulling or tugging, no fabric bunching. It was not just a jacket. It was a piece of art, a masterpiece. The pants needed a minor adjustment in the seat area, that was all. Excited and encouraged by the perfect fit of my first 4 pieces, I ordered two 3-piece suits. One in grey, the other in lighter grey and maroon plaid. After few weeks, the garments were ready for a fitting and they fit perfectly. All the adjustments from the previous fitting were added to my pattern already and all pieces had the exact same fit. The drape of the pants was flawless, the comfort; superb. The jackets, beautiful with a seamless shoulder line and sleeve pitch. No collar gap or roll. The lapels rolled elegantly with no popping. In a nutshell, I could not have been happier. Everyone is nice and welcoming. They are really good at what they do, but at the same time, very humble and down to earth. While finding the location was difficult at first, the experience of picking out fabrics, getting measured, and trying on the custom suit for the first time was nothing but exceptional. One year later, and my body shape had changed, and my suits (still in near perfect condition) no longer fit like they used to. I took them in to make some alterations and was greeted by the same excellent hospitality that I had come to know from the previous experience. Alan David is everything I would want in a tailor; efficient, no-nonsense, custom suit tailoring and the best value for your dollar in New York. I was measured in their Midtown location by DK who had a great sense of style and taste, and then they made their suits right across the river in my hometown (home-neighborhood?), Long Island City, Queens, NY. Rather than the boilerplate navy or charcoal suit, I wanted something special to wear to weddings. I selected a beautiful dark steel blue Vitale Barberis Super 150s fabric. They almost nailed it on the first try. I asked for the jacket to be tapered a bit, and some minor adjustments. After my second fitting, I decided I wanted the jacket a bit shorter. They made the alternations promptly and now I am all set to look sharp this summer. I appreciate their no-frills, efficient approach. There were no leather couches or whiskey or nostalgia of British men's club or any of the extraneous decorative accoutrements that would suggest you've been teleported to London in the 1930s. The top notch quality, excellent staff, fair prices, and obsessive attention to detail have made them my go to amongst many bespoke clothiers. The reality is, that many people can get beautiful lavish fabrics in New York City. What is infinitely harder is finding a bespoke clothing maker that is able to perfect the individualized fit for each client, and can create garments that have unique flair but will also last for many seasons. Fit is where I find Alan David Excels! If I had to choose between the most beautiful fabric but a suit that didn't fit well, or a perfectly fit suit in a poor fabric, honestly I would choose the fit. Thankfully at Alan Davids you don't have to choose. The quality and construction of the garments is second to none, and is commensurate with the finest of British or Italian tailors. Another things that makes Alan David so special are the incredible staff. The receptionist/manager Elsie keeps everything running like a tight ship. She is on top of appointments and is always calling to confirm. When you arrive you are quickly greeted and offered beverages. Every time I have been there I have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be assisted by the sales persons. I have worked with Erica and David, who both have unparalleled know of fabrics, styles and trends. Their advice on what will suit your needs and you body shape are always spot on. After selecting the fabrics for your garments, they will review the detailing of the garment. Be fully prepared, as it is an exhaustive list. This here is the reason for full bespoke. Literally every single detail can be changed or customized to your heart's desire. After the detailing you will be taken to the fitters. I have been fitted by both Jay and Neil, who are both wonderful. Here they will take every measurement, and even observe your posture and movement. In my experience this is the mark of a true fine tailor, as this will allow the garment to move with you. Finally you will week approximately 3 weeks and get the garments. The waiting is of course the hardest part (although Alan David takes less time than most). You come back in for a final fitting, and in my experience you are right on your way. With their excellent fitting skills and years of experience, I have never seen a garment require more than a minor adjustment to sleeve length or pant hem. Found Alan David Custom online, decided to take the plunge. I researched all the other custom/made to measure stores and Allan David seemed to have the most going for it. I initially went in for a year round medium blue solid suit, David sat with me and showed me a dizzying array of fabrics. I must say that there are many people there that what they are talking about. they were all seasoned veterans which put me at east. I chose a year round Zegna fabric which set me almost $2,000, but it seemed like a good deal considering it was Zegna from the Trofeo line (supposedly means "trophy") The key was I needed the suit in 2 1/2 weeks for a wedding and I was assured it would be in on time. I called a few days before after not hearing anything and was told it was on schedule, Sure enough, I received an email from poor Elsie (who I had been bombarding with emails) that the suit was in and ready for fitting. I came in the next day and the suit fit perfect, almost nothing to do. They had to shorten a sleeve and move a button. They even made arrangements to messenger it to me so I would not hve to come back in. Overall the service I got was really good, the quality seems great but most of all the fit was 100% on the money. My first trip to Alan David was for a black-tie tuxedo. This review is delayed so I can't recall what event I was preparing for, but figured that since I'm an executive at a Fortune 100 company near NYC I'd have use for a tux (oh and I have). The process was fabulous--meticulous measurement, selection of fabric and the look (I am extremely traditional in formal wear so I occasionally had to wave-off the "modern" suggestions). The final product (my first bespoke ensemble) was simply amazing. I went back for a white dinner jacket for a July cruise in the Mediterranean. Since I'd already been measured it was simply picking out the fabric and style and off you go. It too looks amazing. Then I went back for a navy blazer. Again, pick the fabric and buttons and that's it. Utterly fantastic. I wore it to my fiancee's prep-school reunion and I am quite certain that I was the best-dressed there. My blazer FIT. Now I'm contemplating a morning suit...our wedding is in two months and it's formal, and finding rental morning wear is apparently impossible. I have nothing but great things to say about Alan David. I've been wearing suits 4-5 days per week for about six years (yikes). Up until now I had always bought suits off the rack (Brooks Brothers, Banana Republic, Reiss, Eidos, etc.) and had them altered. Nothing against such brands, but the problem with that approach is that the end result might look okay when you're standing up straight, but the altered off-the-rack doesn't really move naturally when you do anything else. This is by far the best experience I have ever had. The staff was outstanding from start to finish. Being hard to please was not sure of the end result. I went in to have a suit made and my expectations were truly met. The entire process from start to finish was truly excellent. They are masters of their craft, was elated with the final product, so much so that when I went to pickup my suit, o ordered two more. The quality of their fabrics is phenomenal. Great Italian and English Mills. Do not know why anybody would consider off the rack high-end department store merchandise when you get much more here. I highly recommend Alan David Custom Clothiers. With 2 pairs of pants in dire need of a hemming, I iphone'd "tailors midtown" on yelp- Alan David Custom came up so I stopped by after work. It was quickly apparent that this shop is not exactly a "walk-in" storefront, but rather a custom tailoring solution for larger orders, weddings, etc. Oops I think I surprised them by walking in unannounced with just 2 pairs of pants... (they're inside an office building up on a 5th or 6th floor). Despite my confusion the sales guy and assistant were clearly veteran professionals and I felt like I was treated as a valued client despite surprising them. Its hard to mess up a simple hemming, but they did an excellent job nonetheless. Took two weeks to come back as they were slammed with wedding orders though. read more

Alan David was phenomenal! I have a hard to fit body to say the least. It took 3 tries to get the perfect fit. They will not cut corners. Others, couldn't do it at all. You get what you pay for and with Alan David, you get great quality and service. Will be coming back. Would highly recommend. read more
