    Antipasti heaven
    Jenny L.

An absolute hidden gem. My new favourite restaurant. We enjoyed a group dinner so we were able to try many dishes on the menu. Their specialty is fish, carpaccio and unique pairing of flavours which seems that of a starred chef. We had "crudi" for antipasti, 6 different raw carpaccio with pairings like miso, ginger, teryaki, lime and basil. OUT OF THIS WORLD. Having heard so many great things of this "kitchen without borders" we wanted to try everything. This restaurant is a food lab which means all the pasta is also made in house. Very special. As a first course we tried gnocchi cacio e pepe with shrimp and lime......gorgeous and fresh. Also the ravioli with fennel and orange had a very spring flavour. We also tried crispy chicKen corn flake crust and dipped with a home-made honey mustard. All the sauces and flavours were delicious and worked well together. I would highly recommend. Prices are reasonable for the quality of food on offer.

I've been *yelping* my way across Italy, so I guess I should give back by letting you know about a standout experience. Let me preface this by saying that I was trying to go to very "local" places - not some restaurant by the Fountain of Trevi, if you know what I mean. My strategy for seeing Rome was to go to the more offbeat neighborhoods and try to eat like someone who lives there. I'd take public transportation somewhere (in this case I was on my way to the Pigneto neighborhood - the "Brooklyn of Rome) and if I had to change trains / busses / trams, I'd quickly Yelp to see if anything looked interesting. Alchimia was the top rated restaurant in the area I found myself in, so I decided to give it a try. It's not super traditional. It's much, much smarter than that. It's a *take* on traditional Italian food, but its passport has also been stamped in South America and Japan. The combinations sound much trickier than they taste, so don't freak out about the weirdness factor! Andres, the owner, patiently explained everything on the menu to me. That is, he HAD been explaining everything when I stopped him at his version of a carbonara, which had shrimp instead of pork, and a citrus surprise. I was like, "I WANT THAT!" He said, "ok - but we also have a linguini with red tuna teriyaki. I was like "I WANT THAT TOO!" So he made me 2 half portions of both. I'm still dreaming of them. They were revelatory. The lemon mixed with the cheese of the first one was fresh and alive. For the second one, the teriyaki gave the linguini another dimension that I never even knew about. Also, he makes his own focaccia, which looked perfectly ordinary but TASTED like a miracle. I don't usually eat bread without butter or olive oil or something else to put on it. But this focaccia was excellent all by itself. I wanted to slurp up the remaining sauce with it, but there was no sauce remaining when I was done with the pasta. He makes it with exactly the perfect amount. In fact, "precise" is a good way to describe the food. The balance is . I'm so, so glad I had to change busses where I did. As I said, I've been eating my way across the country for more than a week so far and, aside from dinner at my Italian friend's house, this was the best food I've had the whole time. Thank you Andres!!!

The owner and the chef were both very friendly! They gave us a complementary bag of freshly baked biscotti also!

The food here was wonderful, homemade and the flavor was very detailed. I got the gnocchi with shrimp, and the lemon zest and cheese sauce combination complemented one another perfectly. The owners said that they enjoy experimenting with new flavors, to create combinations that don't usually exist in traditional Italian food. It was a great and unique experience for all of us, since this hole in the wall was very homey, but the flavors very modern. The menu here changes seasonally, and I definitely want to come back here again to try their other explorations if I have the chance!

This food is sophisticated yet keeps the authenticity of Italia, DOCG is a must order!

A yummy thing happened on the way to the Colosseum …read more.. Pane & Vino is a tiny sandwich shop near il Colosseo that specializes in local porchetta (stuffed pork loin) and is run by the friendliest owner of all time. He gets to know every customer on a first name basis. I'd go back more to see him than to have a sandwich. Seriously, he's pretty awesome. The menu is simple and focused on sandwiches featuring their famous porchetta so we tried two recommendations from the peppy proprietor. While waiting, I got a miniature bottle of Chardonnay and my spouse sipped a Coke Zero. The Traiano Porchetta sandwich (12€ - 4 stars) is an original creation of the out-going owner with a mighty Mustard-flavored blend of Roast Pork, Sun-dried Tomatoes, and Grilled Eggplant. I like mustard and, therefore, liked this specialty much more than my wife, but we ended up ignoring portions of the so-so bun. Pane & Vino Special Porchetta (12€ - 4 stars) was a huge sandwich with the sliced Roast Pork Porchetta plus Mozzarella Cheese, Grilled Eggplant, Grilled Peppers, Mushrooms, Lettuce, and Mayo on classic Italian Pane. It needed more mayonnaise or a sprinkle of balsamic and olive oil for my tastes, but there was no denying it was a hearty hero. There are lots of pane bread and sandwich shops in Rome, but there is only one -- Pane & Vino -- run by the most welcoming of owners ever. If I'm in the neighborhood again, I'll be sure to stop in for a casual chat and some yummy porchetta sandwiches on the way to the Colosseum.

Both sandwiches were delicious and the perfect bite after the coliseum! The owner was super friendly and helpful and even recommended a place for us to visit "the Roman Keyhole" - a great find and a well deserved five stars. Thanks again yelp!

The cheese was creamy and delicious, and the vegan bacon was crunchy with the perfect texture - just like real bacon. The owner stated that it was made from pea protein, which I also would never have guessed. PRO TIP: The they close the kitchen between lunch and dinner (at 3:30) so be sure to get there earlier for full access to the menu. Even though I arrived late, the waiter asked the kitchen to make me carbonara, and I'm so glad they did! I will definitely be coming back here again to try their other vegan dishes. The bruschetta was also phenomenal. The tomatoes are so much sweeter and the olive oil so smooth, much better than in the U.S. And of course, I can't forget the noodles - perfectly al dente and fresh. I feel so spoiled when I eat pasta in Italy!

Rifugio Romano served the best vegan pizza I've ever eaten! Tbh, I haven't sampled too many other…read morevegan pies prior, however this one certainly beat them out, though they could also work on their technique and flavors a little more. Searching for a place to eat, this place caught my eye for its good reviews on Gmaps and optimistic take on Roman classics turned plant-based. On a Friday around 1pm, right after we sat down, the restaurant sudden filled up with additional customers to about three-quarters full. Approximately two dozen seats inside and another dozen street side tables outside. Inside it's got a mom and pop traditional restaurant feel--a handful of two and four tops, a drinks fridge/wine chiller, a small corner bar, with medium-toned wooden tables and chairs. We checked in with the staff inside and they gave us the option to sit in or outside, we chose outdoors. Menus are scanned via QR code and if I recall correctly they have mostly Italian with some English. We ordered: - seasonal artichoke and vegan bacon pizza €16: first of all, the scale isn't obvious from my photo--it was a 12 inch pizza, for an individual pie--HUGE! Glad I saw the table over receiving their pizza first so I didn't make the big mistake of ordering more than one. Flavor--the artichoke, cheese and crust were a great combo, and the plant-based cheese stood out as one of the most strikingly similar cheesy textures out there. The bacon was visually and texturally dissimilar to the real thing, it looked dry though wasn't, and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't bacon. At least they hit one out of two on this pizza. It was a satisfying pie. - ratatouille €6: which ended up being sautéed beans, peas and asparagus. If there is one thing I noticed eating at a few different Italian restaurants in Italy--they overcook their vegetables, and this was on trend, a tad over, though still edible. The flavor was good but needed to tone down the salt a notch. Food arrived in about 15 minutes, the pizza was hot and crisp at the crust. Staff was friendly and checked in once during the meal. Cash and card accepted. Bathroom available though I didn't use it to comment.
