Ok...I'm born and raised in Baltimore and I have always enjoyed eating out. I have to admit however...I've been a bit of a chain restaurant patron for the most part when it came to eating in my hometown. (outside of the obvious mom and pop spots around town). BUT the day has come...for me to search for those hidden gems here at home and my first taste of one "hidden gem" was the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding! Let me tell you... I'm a huge fan of atmosphere and Ale Mary has that "old tyme" neighborhood bar feel to it. Small...relaxing...community based...but at the same time...could host any big fight or major sporting event or holiday/ xmas party. Always packed, but the waiters will always find a way to accommodate you without even having to rush anyone away. I order the Chicken Cheesesteak and was shocked by the size, and astonished by how good it was! OK Don't get confused this is not a five star restaurant...it is a pub...and their pub food and drink selection are just perfect for the setting. Their staff is friendly and fast. I live in PA and have traveled to this pub 3X in one month just to turn friends and family onto it. I avoid high carbs so I cant really sample their menu like my friends so I just live vicariously and have a bite or two of theirs...if they offer. I do however save my carbs for the banana nut bread ale mixed with the chocolate beer!! #$%^&* Who needs dessert!! Speaking of which my nieces couldn't even put a dent into their Krispy creme bread pudding it was so rich (and huge). Their tots are their specialty and although the sound of Thai Peanut Tots grossed me out I still had to try them and was pleasantly surprised how delicious they were. I have also had their pork chops, salads, breakfast /brunch and everything has been great to OK. Now are they a gourmet delight? Great place. I frequent here. I never am able to finish my beer before I get a new one. Their specials are top notch (They usually have delicious tater tot specials every week) and their cream of crab soup is delicious. The food is simple and on point. In terms of ambiance, this is my kind of bar: laidback and a decent crowd. My friend and I came during the happy hour, so it was $1 off all drinks. We got Stoli and soda, and not only it came in a pint glass (which is a lot!), but it also cost $3. So $4 during its regular hours for that?!? I like it!!! The food isn't bad either. We shared cheesy tots, and it was decent. As the fellow Yelpers suggested, we decided to try the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding. So wrong yet sooo good! It was served warm, and it was just decadently delicious! As much as there isn't much around them (it is a corner bar), Ale Mary is worth the drive for a casual get-together with friends in the area. read more

We went to Ale Mary's for Brunch last Sunday. The staff was quick to combine some tables for us, and make sure we were happy. I immediately ordered a bloody Mary thinking everyone else would too...but I was left all by my lonesome to enjoy it. It was pretty tasty. Nice and thick with a good flavor to it. The food was excellent. My son shouted out after trying his bananas foster "How have I lived without this?". I ordered &!? biscuits, but only the half portion thinking I would have to finish his food, but he hesitated to even share a bite with me. My tots and gravy were good though, I just regret not getting the full portion. Someone else got the regular french toast, someone got an omellete, and some one got flap jacks. The only complaint was that the pancakes weren't cooked all the way through. They corrected it, but I thought it was odd that they didn't make her new pancakes, and instead just finished cooking those pancakes. That's pretty much what is stopping this place from getting my fifth coveted star. I will definitely come back sometime. I have been a few times prior, and like this quirky little bar! read more

The food was average, the beer selection is above average. I would give it 3 stars, but it really has no business being on the top 10 for Baltimore. I suppose if tater tots didn't get old for you back in middle school, this is the place to go. We started with the seared tuna appetizer, the tuna was much more than seared and most of the pieces cooked the whole way through. I had the shrimp salad sangwich, and it wasn't all that special. I drive by Ale Mary's everyday on my way home from work and the place is always busy, so I decided to give it a try. I AM SO HAPPY I DID! Wow, what a pleasant surprise this little place was. First off...kudos to this place for keeping the wine by the glass price below $6...I mean all of them are $5.25 and we are not talking junk either. The beer prices are just as reasonable and the list is extensive. Food wise...Excellent! Appetizer: Mary's Mussel's are possibly the best mussels I have ever had. Salad: Caesar was to die for. Main Course: Ribs had an excellent sweet smoky flavor with tender meat falling off the bone. My boyfriend had the Santorini Seafood Grill that he inhaled. Desert: Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.....AWESOME! The service was attentive with a laid back style that goes perfectly with the atmosphere. First and foremost I was pretty impressed with their crush mixed drinks, that thing packed a punch. I had the grapefruit and orange, and I must say it hit the spot. On to the food, I ordered the Chesapeake sandwich which was good, and my friend ordered the crab cake sandwich with sweet tots she enjoyed it as well. Of course on my first visit here, I can't leave without trying the famed bread pudding. It was good, but I don't think I will be ordering it again. We hit this spot after Day 1 of the Virgin Mobile Fest. My brother, who lives in Baltimore, said this place had the best wings in town. Naturally, we had to stop by. I loved the Catholic Theme of this bar. Brought me back to my childhood, with holy water by the door, and walls lined with confessional doors. Forgive me Father, for I have sinned, it has been 10 YEARS since my last confession.... We started with the grilled wings, which were fantastic. Definitely lived up to their reputation. I had the cheese steak sandwich....huge, juicy, melty, delicious. I upgraded my side to cheesy tots. Any place that offers tots as a side automatically adds a star for me. My husband loved his crab cake sandwich...a must for him while visiting Maryland. Overall, great atmosphere, great beer (Hoegarden on tap...mmmm), and great food. Oh, and great service. When we finished eating we stacked our plates (Yes, ex-restaurant workers)...our server was so grateful that he brought our next round of beer in a bigger glass. read more

I loved this place. It has a lot of personality and it all fits into a small space, and the fact that it's family owned only adds to its charm! I ordered the plain tater tots as well as the bacon, cheese and ranch tater tots and they were like HEAVEN in my mouth! I didn't expect much, but these were delicious. We also ordered the crab sandwich, and my boyfriend didn't want to share... that's how good it was. I eventually got a bite, and the crab cake was not only hearty in size it was absolutely divine in taste. We ended the night with the krispy creme bread cake a la mode... I, for a second time, felt like I had died and gone to heaven... so good, the bread was warm and obviously straight out of the oven, topped with freshly whipped ice cream, whip cream and other goodies... Wonderful experience! After all of that you'd think our bill was insane, but it wasn't! We went during Happy Hour and, boy, am I glad we did! Great beer selection, great staff, cheap prices. I got a couple beers and we ordered the loaded tater tots, amazing with 3 cheeses and bacon on top with a side of ranch. I really can't say enough about how great their staff were. Our tab was $13! How is that even possible? Happy hour is $1 off all drinks making a bottle of National Bohemian $1.50. Ale Mary's is the sole reason why I gained 15 pounds during my first year of work. I love that they have Sweet Baby Jesus on draft. I love their tater tots, and I didn't even like tater tots as a child. The deli tots are amazing. I get that, and then a small cesaer salad to make myself feel better that I am eating greens, but actually I am just eating more fat and cheese. Sammiches are great. For the entrees, I've tried their pork chops, sea food pot-pie, which are both amazing. All of their appetizers are delicious--I've never left hungry and I've never left feeling like I paid too much money for something not delicious. I can kill the Kitchen Sink by myself. If you ask nicely, they will give you more whipped cream on the side (and on top!). Unfortunately, I no longer fit into my clothes. ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS PLACE. Stumbled upon it almost by accident and SO glad I did! They are great for a number of reasons: 1.) Locals own and run it. I've been back a few times and they made the effort to learn my name/greet me. Great service and such nice wonderful staff! 2.) The food is legit Baltimorian pub food- crab dips, great sandwiches, AMAZING seafood soups, and the tots are killer. I would suggest the crabby tots, lobster bisque, salmon BLT... basically anything. 3.) Outdoor seating which is bumping in nice weather. It's on the corner of a kind of busy street which is a double edged sword... great people watching but a little noisy sometimes. 4.) Good beer selection! I've been to Ale Mary's several times to eat and drink. The members of the staff are always very friendly and the vibe is very unique given the sacrilegious imagery and artifacts inside. I also appreciate their beer selection. My last trip there was for dinner and I ordered the Portabello Mushroom sandwich as well as an order of Crab Tots. The sandwich was delicious! The Crab Tots were also good, although the tots themselves tasted like they were freezer burned. Luckily, the crab and cheese topping covered up most of the potential freezer burn taste. Love this place for lots of reasons: great, thoughtful staff, delightful owner/ mgmt, tasty, filling brunch ( we typically go here on Sunday's cuz it's right around the corner from Fells Point for Second Sunday Flea Market... which you need to go to as well!) and the perfect mix of friendly neighborhood folks with the occasional drop- ins like us. The brunch menu has a nice mix of regular things like pancakes, French toast and omelets PLUS calorie breaking naughty drunken tots that are the perfect antidote if you have indulged a wee bit too much the night before! $3 Mimosas add a nice zing to your breakfast or a hand squeezed Crush ( try the grapefruit) We need to come back on another day for lunch or dinner, but the one thing you must do is check out the signs and other accoutrements of cat-lick ( catholic) ambiance! My husband and I went here because of all the great reviews. We were NOT disappointed!! The bar is such a cool place and they have some EXCELLENT food!! We sat casually at the bar and had a couple beers and some appetizers. If you go here you MUST get the grilled wings (any flavor) and the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding a la Mode. Sunday brunch was amazing. STRONG, really high quality coffee. Everything was seasoned really well. Home fries were crushed tater tots tossed with onions and peppers = salty goodness. They have some local beers, which is always a fantastic thing. I had to try the crabby tots.....I was not impressed. They were okay, but they weren't very crabby. I wouldn't order them again. This place is has got to be the best breakfast spot in Fells Point, and right up there with the best on the east coast for that matter. You definitely have to disregard the calorie count and go big when dining here! Here's the breakdown... We came here for breakfast and my wife and I decided to split two menu items which we couldn't both go without trying. I ordered the Drunken Sunday Tots which were absolutely to die for! How can you go wrong with crispy tater tots piled high with scrambled eggs, cheddar jack cheese, bacon and all smothered with sausage gravy? A heart attack on a plate, yes, but at least you will die happy! Speaking of coronary artery cloggers, my wife had the Saints and Sinners Sandwich. This sinful delight is a sausage, bacon, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich on a honey glazed donut. Yes, that's right, I said a honey glazed donut. If that wasn't enough for you, it's fried to perfection in butter! The hash browns that accompanied it were very flavorful as well, a definite honorable mention. Everything came out hot and fresh and tasted so great. I am drooling right now as I recall my meal writing this review!!! In summary, a very solid breakfast. So much food for such little money. We stuffed ourselves so hard that we had to skip lunch. I was, however, very bummed we didn't make it back for the infamous Krispy Cream Bread Pudding Ala Mode. I do really regret not trying this because the menu says it was voted the best dessert in Baltimore. I will definitely be back to sample it (hopefully sooner than later). I adore this local bar - I love coming here for brunch!! Sunday drunken tots - SO GOOD. Really hits that spot that craves fried carbs, gravy, and BACON. They do a good job w/ the breakfast burrito too - really filling. Drinks are good and plentiful, service is great, and I love that it's so easy to get to. Place is small, so not ideal for big groups. They also have outside seating when the weather is fair. Street parking is hit or miss depending on the time of day, but I don't mind parking farther - let's me walk off some of those delicious calories. =) read more

Came last night for the first time to try the tots and the beer. Someone recommended I try the Troegs Mad Elf which they had on tap. Turns out the Mad Elf wasn't for me but the tots and the Resurrection Ale on draft more than made up for it. I was with a big group and although we were a bit loud everyone was chill. Plenty of reviews here, so I'll just give a bunch of detail on things I liked/found interesting. We went there on a brisk Saturday night. Can I be frank w/you?... Awww, you're so sweet. So, I grew up in Baltimore and wouldn't dare step foot in a Fells Point tavern full of locals. Folks from my part of town weren't exactly allowed over there (at least that what the common perception was). I guess I'm scarred b/c til this day, I'm still hesitant to go to Fells bars I'm not familiar with. Anyway, when we walked in the door, let's just say... we integrated the joint. But, to my surprise, the jukebox record didn't skip, drinks still were pouring, and folks kept on a'drinkin'. No one even noticed, except for the kind bartender who offered us a drink and a table. Nice Guy # 1 - So, the bartender seats us - as friendly as can be - and runs off the impressive lists of beers that I might like given my penchant for ambers. I order a brew, she orders a "something sweet," and we order the wings folks rave about - Bourbon BBQ and Old Bay Butter. The bartender's beer suggestion was spot on. Good stuff. Her drink was indeed sweet. You MUST try the OBB wings. Most restaurants cake Old Bay seasoning on an over-fried wing. Not AM - it was a moist, spicy, and smokey kind of sauce the wings were bathed in. If someone told me it was jerk, I'd believe them. Very nice twist on the average Bay wings. BTW, they can easily fill you up. Nice Guy # 2 - The other bartender came over to check on us and took our order. I got the a steak and she got a steak sandwich. Nice Guy # 3 - A server brings us the food. I swear it was a half-a-cow sprawled across my plate. It was huge and cooked to perfection. Her steak sandwich was more like a slab of beef wearing a bread shawl. Best part, it was good. The server stayed a few seconds to chat and to make sure everything was cooked to perfection. Nice Girl # 1 - Another server randomly stopped by to see if we needed anything. Nice Guy # 4 - An older guy, who I assumed was the owner, came from the kitchen and stopped by to check on us as he headed behind the bar. I made a conscious effort to count the number of folks who checked-in on us. We barely got through half of our steaks before throwing in the towel. Nice Guy # 3 convinced us to try the Krispy Cream Bread Pudding. I usually don't order dessert b/c my sweet tooth has quieted itself over the year. But, I promise you this - I'd smack my momma with a wet burlap sack to get another spoonful. I won't go into detail about the taste (I fear the drooling it will induce and I cannot swim), but it was indeed delicious. A must try. By the time we gave up trying to finish dessert, a bunch of early-20s kids came in in 80s athletic gear and got a little loud and drunk-like, so we decided to head out. But, all in all, very good food, very friendly and attentive staff, and I'm definitely going back. Damn... now I'm thinking thinking about the Krispy Cream Bread Pudding... Ale Mary's how do I love thee let me count the ways. I have lived very close to Ale Mary's for a few years now and it has truly become a second kitchen for my wife and I. It is always consistent, great service, atmosphere, company, and music. I have been to Ale Mary's for birthday parties, sporting events, Bar crawls and any other event under the sun and I always come back fat and happy. Ale Mary's is just that kind of place. Drink: As a bar that specializes in Belgian Beer it is top notch. Tom (the owner) always has great taste in what he puts on tap and the beers are always rotating in and out. Of course with a name like Ale Mary's you have to have the local favorite "Resurrection" by the Brewer's Art or Ale Mary's Own "Heavenly" Pale Ale. Food: A great menu that starts with the humble tater tot. Not deep fried, always baked and now coming in 5 varieties. Plain, Three Cheese, Loaded (Cheese, Bacon, and Ranch), Sloppy (Sloppy Joe and Cheese), and Crabby (Great Crab dip) All the sandwiches are tasty, highlights are the "Fleet Street Cheese Steak", "Crabby Nun", and "Blackened Tuna." Weekly specials also are a great bargain and always surprising. Atmosphere is great too, very laid back but never quiet. Outdoor seating is great in summer and bar is nicely laid out. Tables in the back are fine, but nothing fancy. Overall, is a great place for a quick bite or hanging out with friends. Here's to you Ale Mary's. TOTS! If you love them crunchy and smothered with lots of yummy ingredients then Ale Mary's is your spot. My favorite are the Sunday Morning Tots for brunch - crunchy, buttery tots topped with melted cheese, scrambled eggs, tons of bacon and smothered with sausage gravy. A heart attack in a bite, but honestly the best cure for a hangover. The dinner menu is less impressive than brunch, but they have phenomenal specials and seasonal dishes. Also, as other people mentioned, the Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding is out of this world. My husband has been known to get it for brunch instead of ordering a regular dish. The place can get really packed so don't go there expecting to be seated right away. Ate dinner here while in town for work with two co-workers. I had the blackened chicken club and it was really good - and HUGE. I couldn't finish it, and that is rare for me. One of the group got a burger that came with a beer - Natty Bo? Whatever, the beer was average but the report on the burger was that it was delicious. The servers were great, and the place has a very welcoming vibe. A couple of families mixed in the crowd.
