My boyfriend and I have been to Ale Mary's twice now. I don't understand what the big deal is about this place, although I did not have the Krispy Kreme bread pudding. The first time we went, we just got a chicken sandwich and a burger. Both were good, but nothing too exciting. We also got the tots, which to me, just tasted like McDonald's hashbrowns. Mine were cheesy. The cheese just didn't blend with the tots. BOOORING. We went again for dinner and drinks. The beer selection is good, but the food was less than mediocre. Everything on the menu SOUNDS good, but nothing was. We ordered the crab dip, but it had so much Old Bay in it that I couldn't taste anything else. The baguette that came with it was pretty tasty. My boyfriend got ribs. He didn't have much to say about them, but we both really disliked the mac & cheese. It's just bland noodles covered with melted cheddar and bread crumbs. It's not saucy at all, and it's quite bland. I got the strip steak sandwich. I ordered it medium; it came medium-well. It was really chewy and hard to eat. I also got the mac & cheese with my meal. What a disappointment. The beer tasted good, fresh, and cold. The service was good. Nice laid-back group of guys working there. Too bad the food sucks. A serviceable little Baltimore pub/ restaurant. It's in Fells Point but is located just far enough away from the water to avoid the ubercrowded main tourist strip. That doesn't mean Ale Mary's doesn't fill up on busy nights, but maybe not as jammed packed wall-to-wall bodies, or there's a bit of a chance you might still find a table. We went on a weekend night when an O's game was playing on the TV and found it to have a good crowd but still ample space to grab a table at 10 pm. Be aware that it will likely be very hard in this area to find a parking space, however. The bar has a humorous Catholic-themed menu and some Catholic nun doll and chalice decor, however, it's really understated (compared to some bars I've visited in, say, Europe that were wall-to-wall statues and icons). If you're religious you probably won't be offended, if you're not religious you should find the trappings easy to ignore. Two big screens for watching sports and a decent selection (maybe 8-10) beers on tap including a variety - white, red, Guinness, lambic, etc. So, no problem choosing something to drink.. Cutesy names aside, the food is a bit less dependable. The food is a pretty solid hit for simple things like burgers, cheesey tots (tater tots absolutely encrusted with cheese) and Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding (which really IS "all that" - and get it without the ice cream since it's a serving big enough for 3 people even withot all the extra vanilla slather which makes it a meal for 5). The menu however is awfully huge and there is stuff on it that seems kind of out of place for this type of a joint - they can't possibly do all of that well and it would be better if they just had five really good dishes than a diner-length litany of stuff. For example, the sweet potato tots are better avoided; they taste like they came out of a freezer box and were lightly wafted under a toaster oven element just enough times to get lukewarm. The wait staff were cheerful and perky and we didn't have to wait long for our food, but they did mess up one of our orders by adding stuff we'd specifically asked to leave off, and it had to be sent back. They seemed not too put out (I think the item got given to some other table). I would go back for a burger and beer and maybe some cheesy tots and dessert. Would not venture into the more exotic realms of the dinner menu though. read more

Went here for a late dinner Monday night. It was fairly quiet in the dining area. Very chill and casual experience. Per Yelpers, we ordered the Crabby Tots to start off and it was awesome. The portion was huge and the two of us were pretty full with just that. We also ordered the Angus Burger and Seafood Bouillabaisse and they were superb. Portions and taste on the burger was great. We came with a party of 8 for brunch and we were well accommodated. The chef has put together a very unique menu. I had the Texas toast, bacon, eggs and home fries. The home fries were actually tatter tots mashed up but it was really good. The bar is in the front and has enough TV's for whatever sporting event might be taking place. The restaurant seating is the the rear and in the summer they have outdoor seating. My brother in law lives up the block so we plan on making a few return trips. read more

Even though I am only giving them 3 stars, I'm doing so with some hesitation thinking I need to go back again and maybe order a little different. The beer selections was AWESOME and what I should have done was had beer and crabby tots. Instead we turned it into a meal and it was too heavy and too much food. We ended up eating a lot that we personally didn't think was very good. The crabby tots were by far the star menu item! We thought they were delicious. The mistake was ordering a crabby hun sandwich, french onion soup (both of which weren't very good) and mussels (which were good). We didn't realize how much food the crabby tots would be! My mom got the french onion soup and was less than impressed. My dad ordered the mussels and those were also really good. I am in no way writing this place off, I am looking forward to trying it again. Maybe more as a beer and snack place versus trying to go there for a meal. Love Ale Mary's. This is one of my favorite places to hang out in Baltimore. Awesome staff and a GREAT atmosphere. They have a fantastic beer menu that includes Resurrection along with another 8 or so craft breweries. Great stuff. Now...I don't think their food is that great but there are some gems on the menu. I like the sandwiches - especially the blackened catfish and the chicken sandwiches/salads. Tuna dishes are also great. I had a large group come to Ale Mary's on Saturday for a going-away party and it was delightful experience. It's a small place so if you plan on going with a group you can't expect to sit with more than 7 of your friends but I had little groups here and there (in the restaurant and bar section) and it worked really well. The staff was unbelievably accommodating, friendly, and helpful. I had called a few days ahead to tell them I was planning on having a group (there were about 30 people coming in and out through the night) and all of the guys were great about it and really helped with seating and figuring out where to put everyone. On to the food! I shared the sweet potato tots and cheese pizza with a friend. The pizza was above average and the sweet potato tots were AWESOME. My friends were all more than thrilled with their menu choices (and especially delighted with the tots). For dessert we went for the krispy kreme bread pudding and I was not disappointed. I definitely felt a little guilty after knowing what I just put in my body but my taste buds were too happy for me to be too upset about it. Ale Mary's was an all-around great night! read more

Finally got there last night. What a great little place. Friendly, comfortable neighborhood spot. Service was very good and three of us enjoyed our meals. We started with grilled wings - half bbq, half buffalo. Loved them! Charred perfectly. We also had the loaded tots which we enjoyed. Two of us had the special spaghetti Nd meatballs. Way too much food for me but my nephew cleaned his plate. His fiancé had a chicken wrap, I forget which one, but it too was too much for her so she took half home. Really enjoyed this little bar/pub with a surprisingly advanced menu. The interior is decorated with Catholic paraphernalia and I loved glancing all around and pointing out all the Saints and sacramental I noticed to my Boyfriend's delight...yeah right ;) Nice selection of beer and wine. my BF was able to try a new beer he was interested in. I got a glass of wine, but next time I want to try one of their yummy looking fall themed cocktails, I just didn't find the little menu in time to order. There was specials board outside that we missed due to a crowd around it and since our waitress was new we didn't get them shared with us. There was some good pricing on select wines I would've like to have know about and more details about the entree special. I'm kind of a sucker for the "days of the week" type of specials so that kind of info is always appealing to me lol. There were several vegetarian friendly options to choose from. I went with a grilled portobella and fresh mozzarella sandwich that also featured roasted red peppers and mixed greens, served on Texas toast. It came served with some non-stale kettle style potato chips that I finished all of. It was really good. I loved how the very friendly staff worked as team to take care of us. The music was like someone had stolen my iPod from 2008 and put it on shuffle, I enjoyed it. If you've never been here before, don't mistake this a some old dive bar! They opened in 2004 as a newly renovated tavern, so a cheerful and friendly environment awaits! They always have great draft beers in the rotation (stuff you won't find at most bars in Fells Point, like Belgium style ales) to go along with their own "Mary's Heavenly Pale Ale". My first Ale Mary's experience was in October 2011, when my boyfriend and I started dating, and he insisted that we go to grab a beer and some food. I wrecked my diet that night. I was told about the tots, and decided I'd get the plain tots since I hadn't had any tots since fifth grade (total exaggeration). They were perfect...soft and hot on the inside, with a little crunch to the outside - just the way I like them. I don't remember what I had for dinner, but I had the Resurrection, and it was great (I'm not big on beer). This is a great spot for us, and we go at least once a month. Great service, beer selection is awesome (that's why the boyfriend likes it I suppose), and the food is fabulous. I've never had anything there I didn't like. The portions are usually really large, so start with an appetizer if you want something small. Most of the dinners I've seen (or had myself) were way too much for me to even make a dent in - someone at the table will usually finish my meal or I'll take it home. Try the sloppy tots - finally had those a couple of weeks ago and they were great, too. The place is small, and during the busy times (Friday and Saturday nights) it can be hard to move around and get a table, but the wait is worth it for all of the good times we've had there so far. This is one of my favorite places in the Fells Point/Canton area, so I'm always willing to go back! read more

After reading some reviews on Yelp this evening my partner and I decided to try this place out for dinner to see what the hub bub was all about. We arrived and were greeted outside by this guy named Tom(who is one of the owners) who took us inside to seat us. After he told us where the special menu was and taking our drink order he was off and taking good care of us. After perusing the special menu we decided to split one of those and the Chef herself was very happy to do that for us, come to find out it was Mary herself. Salads came and then the enchiladas ... I went to Ale Mary's on Saturday March 5th for lunch with several families and a large group of hungry pee wee hockey players. We ordered practically one of everything from the menu and there wasn't a complaint in the house. All menu choices were generous in proportion, delicious and reasonably priced. I personally had wings, tots, steak and chees sub, and caeser salad. Of course we finished by sharing the bread pudding. Do not miss this treat when you go!! The wood paneling on the interior was repurposed from an old church. That with the neat artwork and holy water fonts by the door give the place a cool charm. Service was fantastic and couldn't have been friendlier. An especially amazing feat, given that we descended on the place en masse with 12 shrieking kids who had just won their first tournament game, parents, coaches, speeches, you name it.. We didn't have any beers because it was early in the day and we had the kids, but I want to go back and check this place out for dinner and nightlife. Another round of Ale do you say... Ale Mary's, my kind of place :) A couple of friends were in from out of town and we wanted to take them to solid Baltimore bar, and we found one in Ale Marys. When you first walk in your expecting standard Baltimore Fells Point Bar... to loud music, rude bartenders and drunk frat guys and drunk sorority girls, but the opposite is true. True, Ale Mary's is on the small side, but the warmth and ambiance is awesome. Behind the Bar there is a seating area if you want more space and a sit down dinner. But lets focus on the bar area. The bartenders are nice, funny and kinda sassy, so it makes for a good convo while we waited till our friends arrived. On top of the good bartenders, the beer selection was solid... nothing to crazy like Max's but they had Chimay on tap :) So we ordered a couple rounds and decided to look into the menu. Sweet Tots anyone! Yep, sweet potato tater tots, made in house :) Now alot of Bmore places offer you frozen tots that are then deep fried, nothing wrong with that, but Ale Mary's makes their tots in house so they come out looking like they are all creatures from the black lagoon, but they taste darn good!! On top of that we ordered some Grilled cheese! Killer perfectly grilled and the cheese was properly melted. So Good Bartenders CHECK, Good food CHECK, Good beer CHECK! Winner winner Chicken dinner (I should see if they have a chicken dinner) Ale Mary's has risen to near the top of my choices in Fells Point, with solid food and beer you cant go wrong. I was visiting Baltimore for a concert from Virginia Beach. I really wish I lived near this place. It has a close local pub feel to it. Oh, hello there. Do you love pub food? Do you love beer? Do you love fast, friendly service? Are you a fan of biblical puns? Then guess what, you'll love this place. This is truly some of the best service I've encountered in Baltimore. Every member of the staff I encountered was friendly and went out of there way to make sure I was doing good and enjoying my food. One of my favorite burgers in B-more, but I am known as a bit of a burger slut. The deli tots are what blew my mind.
