I've driven by Ale Pie House countless times and have always wanted to stop in, but never really got around to it. I found a special on Groupon ($10 for $20 worth of food), so that helped give me a little push. Since the pandemic started I've been strictly take-out and even now I'm pretty much the same, so this isn't based on a dine-in experience, although they are currently open for dine-in service as well as pick up and curbside. The parking lot is modest in size and spaces are limited, so if you choose to dine in, I recommend coming early. I called ahead and ordered my go-to Italian dish, Chicken Parmigiana, and a slice of cheesecake. I live about 8-10 minutes away from the restaurant, and everything was in tact and piping hot when I got home. For me, when it comes to Italian cuisine, the sauce really makes the dish, and Ale Pie House does not disappoint with their Chicken Parm. It was the perfect balance of sweet and savory, and was neither over or underwhelming. The chicken had a flavorful, crunchy texture and when combined with the spaghetti, provided a truly exceptional meal. Crown it with some gooey melty mozzarella and call it a day. The portion size was big enough for two meals, so that came in handy for the late-night fridge raid. I DO, however, have one grievance to speak of. The meal came with a side of Garlic Knots, which I was excited for, but i think they may have spent a minute or ten too long in the oven because they were hard. Hard like....Die Hard. Bruce Willis at the Nakatomi Tower Christmas Party kind of hard. I read other reviews where people are praising the Garlic Bread like it's Gods gift to Italian food, so maybe I got something different?... The Cheesecake was the ideal "Ok I'm stuffed, I can't possibly eat another bite, but i could really go for something sweet" dessert. It was creamy, it was dreamy, and served cold....not steamy! *mic drop* I appreciated that the kind lady who greeted me and took care of my order had both mask and gloves on, so thumbs up for that! If you love Italian cuisine, then give Ale Pie House a visit and support this great local business! Check Groupon out for specials, i believe they're still on there. Found this place via Local Flavor and so happy I did! I was seriously going to drive to Orlando for an authentic deep dish but why waste 4+ hours when we have a place right here at home. The interior of the place is super cute. It looks like the upstairs can be used for banquets and parties. Service was great!! They were fast and friendly. Food was delicious. Had to try both the deep dish and the thin crust and both were great. I would give the upper hand to deep dish though. Also got a Grandma's Meatball as an app and it was so tasty. Today was a beautiful day to eat outside so me and my boyfriend were driving around the area until we figured out a good spot. We drove past a fresh hot pizza sign and I saw a patio and we were sold. We walk in and it is spectacular inside. Very spacious, filled with natural light. Great for large groups. We take a seat outside. The patio is also roomy and smells of honeysuckle. Colorful string lights and greenery hang amongst the fencing. I bet it is gorgeous at night. Lunch hit the spot. I had went on a morning run so I'm craving carbs. Pizza and salad sounds good. Everyday lunch special: slice, salad and drink for $7.75. The slices are bigger than my head and the salad can easily be shared for 2. Nothing I love more than a good bang for your buck. read more

Ale Pie House is one of my favorite every day eateries with a broad menu and reasonable prices.

I have ordered pizza from this location about every other week for quite some time. I order the same thing every time. $70 a pop--2 gluten free pizzas. Today, they messed up my order. Instead of acknowledging the mess up, the manager blamed me and the Slice app and was rude and unprofessional. i will never order another pizza from this place again. And I'm sad about it because the pizza is pretty good. But the manager needs to be fired, until then, I'll order from somewhere else. read more

If I'm in a casual mood and want some good tasting Italian food with a decent environment, this place fits the bill. The gluten free pizza, chicken wings, and Caesar salad are my faves. I enjoy spending Monday nights here to play trivia with a group of friends. The owner and wait staff are very friendly and attentive. I recommend sitting at a table. The booths are tight. You don't have a lot of wiggle room between where the table ends and your body. (If you've been to Al's pizza in 5 points, it's exactly like their booths.) The prices are reasonable and there is a small bar area with a TV overhead. It's a place where people come if they live in the area or happen to be in the area, but I wouldn't make a special trip to visit. ** I was going to give this place a 4 but it gets a 3 because their delivery experience is disappointing. I don't mind the longer than average wait. What I do mind is the longer than average wait with soggy pizza and undercooked chicken. Dont let the strange parking lead you away..when you pull in theres only three visible parking spots out front and you see a gravel road..drive down that around a curve to the lot..you can thank me later.. Two of my group of six were already seated and had gone over the beer selection with our server when i arrived. I will say that all the beers on the menu arent really available When you walk in, you instantly feel welcome, and cozy..the booths are beautiful, the wooden tables are a dark rich wood and the tiles on the floor are a nice white and black design. Alot of attention was obviously paid to the details here. There was also some light jazz-ish music playing in the background. I settled in and ordered a Jon Boat, my new fave beer, which was brought out promptly and full of frosty deliciousness. While we waited for the rest of our group to arrive we perused the menu. Its a HUGE menu..all kinds of options going on here.. When we had all arrived, our server took all the remaining drink orders, and gave us some time to decide on what to eat. We had already narrowed it down to a few pizza selections, and he was helpful in our final choices. We went with a new york thin egg plant pie, a chicago stuffed meditarian pie, and a chicago stuffed fruit pie with pepperoni instead of ham. We talked and laughed and ordered probably too many beers..our server was attentive and very patient with his table of 6 slightly rowdy women! He was soon setting up the pizza stands and bringing out the piping hot pizza..and it looked amazing.. First i tried the eggplant pie, with its thin crispy crust and fresh ricotta..it was so good! i then tried half a piece of the fruit pie..this was my first time having a chicago stuffed pizza, and i have to say that im now a fan! Lastly i tried the meditarian chicago stuffed, which i was skeptical about because it had cold ingredients on top, but it was amazing as well. We ate, and ate, and ate some more, we kept the beers flowing and talked and laughed and had a great time. The server checked in on us several times, refilled waters, asked how we liked everything, brought more napkins, and took away trash. I couldnt have been happier with him. Our bill was split the six ways, and we had separate ones for our beverages. We all paid, boxed up our food and went to leave..and our server walked us out!! What a nice little touch..he walked us outside, holding the door for us, and talked to us about the hours they are open. I noticed while we were walking out there was a cute little patio area outside also. Top notch pizza experience! Right when we walked in, we were graciously greeted by the owner and his staff. We were seated in a both we requested (love booths). The restaurant was very clean, super nice decor with a full bar in the corner. And our server, Alyssa, was a total sweetheart! Yes, an extensive menu, but I like that they have a great selection of menu items. For an app, we went for the Breaded Mozzarella ($6.40) which was sliced mozzarella covered in their special Italian seasonings, fried and served with marinara sauce. Let me forewarn you, they give you three HUGE slices piping hot so pace yourself... Next, I ordered the Ale Special Salad ($8.90). I subbed the mozzarella for the goat cheese w/the house made balsamic vinaigrette with no issues. This salad was superb and was as big as my head (and I have a pretty large head)! My boy got a house salad with creamy Caesar, a slice of NY cheese pizza, a slice of meatball & pepperoni and a Yuengling. I took a slice of tres leches to go. OK, their pizza slices are about 3xs the size of most and were perfectly crispy on the bottom. Loved this! Overall, the kitchen is pretty accommodating, there is an adorable smoke-friendly outside patio/dining area, portions were VERY GENEROUS, food was delicious, service was impeccable and the restaurant was beautiful! This is like an Italian restaurant/cafe in NYC. They have thin pie crusts like I'm used to from my years in Brooklyn. They also have their own delish specialty pies. They're near my veterinarian. So, if I ever have to leave a pet off and am in need of comfort food...it is near at hand. I've been here twice. Once with a large group of Christian women who dine out once a month. We had an abfab time and everyone said their food was very good. I had to be challenging. I asked them to make a New York style thin pie crust pie like I used to order in Brooklyn. I asked for one side of the pie to have sliced meatballs and the other side anchovies. They'd never had anyone ask for that. Still they made it and it was excellent. The next time I came was with two friends. We all ordered specialty pies. Mine was the Florence Pie. It was the first time I've ever had pickles on pizza. Very good. This is a go-to place for me. The name is a real misnomer, it is a lot more Italian restaurant than a pizza place. Our waitress, Casey, was fairly new but pleasant and efficient. The garlic cheese bread loaf was a great appetizer. I had chicken parmigiana and my wife had chicken picatta, and in both cases was cooked about a NY minute too long, otherwise it was perfect. At a bend of St. John's Avenue across from Big Fishwier Creek sits Ale Pie House, a nice Italian restaurant just outside of the Avondale neighborhood. Truth be told, this building has housed many restaurants over the years, but Ale's is my favorite. Inside they offer tables, booths and a bar with a television. Maybe it's me, but I dig their black and white tiled floor. The staff is polite, but are usually young and still learning how to wait tables and it shows. The menu doesn't suffer from lack of mouth-watering options. The entrees are delicious and generous. My personal faves are the baked ziti and lasagna. All entrees come with garlic knots which are warm and delish. They also offer some really good sandwiches. The Philly cheese Steak is really good and filling. You can eat half for dinner, wrap up what's left and don't have to worry about lunch the next day. The only downside? It can be a little dry. My suggestion is add a little mayonnaise and that makes the sandwich just right. Ale's also has some great appetizers. The cheese garlic bread is worth getting. The wings are so good it's hard to say no. Cajun ranch, teriyaki or honey mustard are just some of their flavors. Oh yeah. . . It IS a Pie House so let's talk about them pies. So, what kind do they have? New York? Chicago? They answer is yes. They offer both. And for those worried about their gluten intake? THEY DO HAVE GLUTEN FREE PIZZA. The meat, veggie fruit pizza is my go-to. Ham. Beef. Pepperoni. Bacon. Green pepper. Onion. Black olive. Tomato. Mushrooms. Pineapple. And more. But they have many more pies to choose from. Hungry yet? Their prices are definitely in-line with other Italian places around town. Sandwiches are around $8-$9. And most entrees are on average $13.00. Pizzas vary based on size and toppings, but of course you already knew that. And yes, they do deliver. So, go get some of that delicious pizza pie! read more

Don't use a Groupon! I purchased a Groupon for this restaurant and ordered on-line. After a 30 minute drive to the restaurant, and presenting the Groupon, I was told that the Groupon did not apply to on-line orders. NOWHERE on the Groupon certificate did it state that it could not be used in that manner. I was told that there was nothing that they could do. She advised me to use the Groupon again sometime in the future. Problem was that the Groupon expired the very next day. To me, it would have been simple to cancel the order and start over but no accommodations were offered or made, no matter how much I argued. So, instead of paying $8 by using the Groupon, I paid almost $40 for ONE pizza when you include the cost of the now useless Groupon. What a waste? What a rip off! read more

Their "NY-style" is thicker than the traditional pizza I have had in the NE, but it was still serviceable. The service was very slow. Love this place. It was my first time here. Actually in Jacksonville all together. However, I love me some Italian food. The menu is extensive, but that can be good or bad depending how choosy you are. I chose to blend two of my favorite dishes (Chicago pie/philly cheesesteak). I ate one piece and the rest went with me. Prepare to spend 10-20 dollars for a dish. Well worth it!! Valentina was excellent. She was not swarming but was still attentive. Great service. Wow I'm living in Avondale just few months ago and I didn't come to this little Italian restaurant until my good friend and accomplice in crime (we both love to eat out) brought me to try here. I love soup so we started with chicken noodle like la nonna cook the soup in Italy and then we share Margaretha Pizza so fresh every ingredient that when I put every piece of that in my mouth it just melted. Twice in a week at Ale Pie House... it had to be great! Satisfying both times. Surprised they serve great soup. Not what I'd expect from a pizza shop. One night it was Chicken Noodle another night it was Lobster Bisque. If you love soup try Ale Pie House. They offer only one type of soup at a time. Soup comes with delicious bread a cross between croissant & crusty bread. It was so good that I forgot to take a photo. But I digress, their pizza is sooo good with great crust & cheese. My favorite is the Margherita with fresh Basil in thin crust cooked to perfection. I also like their Greek Salad with Grape Leaves, Cranberries and Special Feta house dressing. Unfortunately this time they did not have grape leaves so we tried the Ale Special Salad, not as good. Like this place a lot it's not too busy, quiet & I can walk to it. Came in during lunch on a Friday and knew something was wrong immediately because there was no one inside the restaurant during peak hours for this area. I was hoping I was wrong, but the fact that a Groupon was available should have solidified my first thought after walking into the empty restaurant. The clams had way too much wine and tasted spoiled. The bruschetta came out without the balsamic reduction, did not have fresh garlic or fresh cheese as described in the menu. The calamari was cooked perfectly but had no seasoning at all and the marinara sauce was so bland. In all, we did eat but we're not satisfied even though we shared feedback with the waiter. What a great Italian restaurant. Great food and friendly staff and owner! Our first time we were visited by the owner. We spent about 40 minutes getting to know him and a valuable member, A-lee-a. We have been back many times. In fact on 4/22/17 my fiancé and I got married and had our reception at the Ale Pie House. What a great choice. We watched FIVE tables seated considerably after we not only got their food before we got ours, but two finished their dinner. Only after I made a scene did we get served . . . and a weak lie for an apology: "We're very busy." Uh, no! Then we get to the food. Mediocre was the best of the meals at our table; two were appallingly bad.
