This office is quite unprofessional and I do not recommend coming here. My first appointment in Oct 2019 went completely fine. However, upon my second annual cleaning I came to a surprise $60 charge when my first visit was completely covered by my insurance. The owner later informed me that the ADA is in a lawsuit with my insurance provider. She said this has been posted on "Several social media fronts". As to why I should rely on dental assoc. social media pages for my insurance benefits I do not know. I believe a well functioning dental office would clarify or confirm these sort of changes and developments on their client's insurance plans prior to rendering services. Additionally, there was a $35 PPE fee that was not communicated on their website, over the phone, or prior to my arrival. This has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had a dental office. I've been going to Alegria and seeing Dr. Silva for about 10 years now and I can honestly say that she is the one healthcare provider I have where I would be devastated if I couldn't see her anymore. Since I rely on Yelp for doctors, dentists, etc., I felt obligated to leave a review about Alegria Dental. I would not suggest Alegria Dental to my worst enemy. Dr. Silva sold the practice so many of the older reviews are not relevant. I had an appointment scheduled last year and I showed up on-time for my appointment! The office sent me a reminder in the mail and called to also confirm the appointment. When I arrived for my appointment, the office was locked. The office had "forgotten about" my appointment and I had to come back. When I came back for my appointment, I was really upset. The cleaning lasted about ten minutes and my mouth did not feel at the completion of the cleaning! I felt like the cleaning was poor. I had a really negative experience with Dr. Betty Jean. She did not put me at ease and was rude and short with me. I felt like she did not want to answer my questions. I do not feel like her exam of my mouth was satisfactory because it seemed so rushed and she did not seem to care. As a side note, Dr. Betty Jean has negative reviews everywhere...under different names. I'd suggest Googling her to find the other reviews. I've had other problems with the practice as well. Dr. Silva is the best. She's extremely gentle and caring; great for patients who are a little scared of being at the dentist. She makes dental work go by fast and keeps you laughing during procedures. I used to dread going to the dentist but ever since I started seeing Dr. Silva, I've really calmed down. She is hyper aware of how much things cost her patients and definitely doesn't do work on you that isn't absolutely necessary. She lets you know what's going on in your mouth but also explains to you what takes priority and why as well as how to talk to your insurance company about any work if necessary. Dr. Silva saved the day!! My 11 yr old cracked his tooth in a skating accident and Dr. Silva took him in on a Saturday and fixed his tooth that day and it looks perfect as if nothing went wrong. She is great with my two sons and her office equipment is state of the art. You always know what is going on during your visit. Alegria has been a great experience with me. (2 visits so far). On my first visit they were able to do a complete x-ray and explain work that would have to be done down the line and what they will be keeping an eye on. I was told that I will need to get a couple of fillings and my wisdom teeth out. I was given a name a place for a consultation for my wisdom teeth. I was told that after I get my wisdom teeth out that they can work to do my fillings. I liked how I was not pressure to get my fillings done right away. The office even went beyond and provided me the price of filling if I did it with a white or silver filling. I had such a great experience that I even referred my sister and father. Very disappointed at how my dentist at this practice reacted to me having an emergency. I called the emergency line 2 times and left 2 emails and it took her 2 days to call me back. When she finally did call me back, I had already found another dentists downtown that is very attentive. I was floored that this new practice I contacted fit me in for an appt the next day and was awesome. Allegria dental couldn't offer me any solutions except "try seeing another dentist because the office is closed For a week." It would have been helpful if Dr.Silva ensured her outgoing voicemail message stated that they would be on vacation for a week. The new dentist I contacted could not assist me with what I need done in an emergency but contacted three dentists in the area for me and referred me to them so I could be seen that day. I'll never forget how helpful they were. I was able to get help and treatment that day and the pain was gone. And as a result, I will no longer be giving Alegria Dental my business. Went in to Alegria for my first visit (a cleaning since it had been a year since my last one at my previous dentist in California). Everyone at the office was very professional and kind throughout my visit. Dr. Silva even performed the cleaning! They did a full set of 18 x-rays and took photos throughout my mouth to show me what I can expect for potential issues with my teeth in the next few years. I really appreciate the time spent reviewing everything with me and allowing me (a 20-something on a budget) to plan out these expenses and not feel pressured to deal with them right away. Dr. Silva and the bunch at Alegria are great. I've had cleanings and a bunch of fillings done and have always felt comfortable and well taken care of. She has taken great care to not "overwork" my teeth and do things slowly rather than quickly like a "dentist factory". She is very professional, but the whole staff is very laid back and fun at the same time and makes me feel at ease with everything being done. She has also been very intentional about not doing more work than is necessary and only doing what is important to keep my teeth healthy and pain-free, no upselling. As a bonus, their times are very flexible (early morning, Saturdays) and prices are very reasonable. The location is also right on the 69 bus route, so easy access to Harvard/Red Line and Lechmere/Green Line. read more

Dr. Silva is wonderful and pretty entertaining (particularly when we're talking dentistry!). She's extremely caring and gentle and really is invested in what she's doing. I also super appreciate that she explains everything, takes pictures of before and after, and has a great support staff that is very email friendly. Dr. Silva is fantastic. She is very friendly and charismatic, but also maintains discretion and professionalism. The staff is small but well experienced and use very modern technology. They have monitors that allow you to see what they see in your mouth - very neat! Dr. Silva is also very honest and has shown to do whatever is in the best interest of the patient, and not for profit. I say this because when I inquired about Invisalign, she could have done that treatment but due to my specific case, she knew I would have better results with metal braces. I believe she also provides a number of cosmetic treatments, like Botox and Latisse. The only con is their location. I lived right nearby but it's a mile from the T and I don't know if they offer any parking accomodations. It's a great neighborhood though, so I'm sure you could make the trip worth it. read more

I'm writing this review specifically about my experience since this practice has been sold to a new owner. I had been going to Dr. Silva for years, loved the service, and had recommended everyone I knew to this office. I had last seen Dr. Silva in October to reattach a loose crown, and she recommended I come back for a cleaning since it had been a while. I made an appointment a few weeks ago (under the new ownership) for a cleaning (I was still on file in their system as they've kept the client records), and showed up today for my cleaning. The receptionist informed me since I hadn't had a full set of x-rays and an exam in 6 years, that they wouldn't do the cleaning unless I got those as well, over $200 on top of a $75 cleaning. It was never mentioned when I booked the cleaning, and I was paying in cash as I don't have dental insurance. When I explained I wasn't prepared for the extra services since they only booked me for a cleaning, they said it was the new policy that they wouldn't serve me without more recent x-rays on file, not that it was necessary to perform the cleaning, just they wouldn't serve me without them. This is what I take most issue with, and that they wouldn't stand by what they booked while I was already there even though it was not actually necessary, not the policy itself. (She did offer they could do a "partial" x-ray and exam for maybe $150 or so) When I mentioned that Dr. Silva asked me to schedule the cleaning 6 months prior, and that they agreed to do so a few weeks ago with no mention of the X-ray or exam, she just shrugged and said "Well, Dr. Silva doesn't work here anymore". She double-checked with the Dr, who confirmed they wouldn't serve me, so I said thanks anyways and left, after the receptionist made a point of saying "We're not turning you away!". The whole situation read as a bit of a cash grab, like a dishonest mechanic refusing to change your oil without a full inspection of your car that cost more than double the oil change, and that they didn't really need to do to perform the task they agreed to. I have been commuting to this office for the good service for years, even though its out of the way for me. This exchange just seemed really inconsiderate of their clients' time to commute and show up for the appointment, like bad communication of their policies when I booked, and like they didn't really care much about hanging onto the "old" clients. When I pay for my full X-ray and exam as a new patient, it will be to an office with more respect for what they promise when they schedule time with their patients. read more

I have known Dr. Silva for 20 years. We worked for the same dentist in Cambridge and subsequently in his Arlington office. When we first met she was a hygientist and I was a certified dental assistant. I have worked in numerous offices (general,cosmetic and endodontic), over the years and in my opinion she was one of the best hygienists that I have known. At all times she was professional,hard-working,friendly,etc.... Working in a dental office can be very stressful and she stayed on schedule and always had a great sense of humor. I noticed one of the reviewers called her dishonest ! Trust me .... I have worked for a temp agency and I have met dishonest dentists.She is not one of them! My husband ,son and I are all patients of Dr. Silva. I drive from Sterling,Ma ( 1 1/2 hours with traffic), because I do trust her. She uses quality materials, the best lab technicians and state of the art equipment and she does not cut corners to increase her profit as many offices do. Dr. Silva is an extremely talented dentist with an eye for beauty.Whether she is doing general, cosmetic dentistry or botox injections to improve someone's appearance the outcome will be beautiful. The same reviewer that I mentioned earlier commented negatively about botox injections. If and when I ever get them- I would feel much more confident with her (a doctor ),someone skilled at giving painless injections every day doing it than just someone with minimal training that you may get somewhere else. Also, it is not uncommon to have a dentist doing botox injections these days.If you research it you will find that some of the best offices in the Boston area offer them as well. Dr. Silva would never tell you that you need work that you don't .Just the opposite is true. I have excellent dental coverage, but that does not determine the treatment that she is going to recommend. I go to her because I know that she will always do what is in my best interest. read more

I am so happy that I got the recommendation to been seen at Alegria Dental, after a HORRIFIC experience at Gentle Dental in Porter Sq. Dr. Silva is super nice and hands on, as well as her fantastic support staff. The actual dental service is also top notch. I can be anxious with Novocaine and drilling and Dr. Silva prepped me so well and I was super calm, even after being extra nervous from the previous trauma. The team is also on point with email and phone reminders, and super accommodating when I have to make changes due to having a somewhat unpredictable schedule. They are also great about checking in with your insurance and making sure you use every penny and making recommendations on what procedures to prioritize. There are also little touches that make me a happy patient...the entire office is spotless, it smells great (not like a typical dentist office) and there is great music playing. I'm hoping to get the rest of my family to switch and will be happy to recommend to others as well! read more

The entire team at Alegria Dental is fantastic. I found the practice last year after not having gone to a dentist in too long. I was nervous about feeling shamed when I went, but was met with compassion and zero judgment, even though I was told I had 8 fillings that were needed on top of needing to get four wisdom teeth removed. Dr. Silva quickly helped refer me to an oral surgeon for my wisdon teeth extraction and has been working with me since to attack the cavities in a way that considers both my oral health and wallet. Dr. Silva and her assistants are careful, kind, and really great at easing any anxiety associated with getting fillings done. Her staff is friendly and helpful. Unfortunately yelp doesn't allow you to give zero stars because this establishment deserves it. Since the dental office was sold to the new dental owner Dr. B Jean-Mary it has become a place where patient care is no longer a thing. This dentist performed a root canal on my grandmother back in July that other dentists told her she never needed and performed it incorrectly. My grandmother ended up having a dental correction after the procedure and was unable to eat or drink anything after the procedure. Upon completing Dr. Jean-Mary HARASSED my grandmother on her home phone constantly for payment that she never received from the insurance. My grandmother received two checks at home to give the dentist, which my mother brought in UNSIGNED. Well, this dentist forged my grandmothers signature and STOLE HER MONEY!!!! She ended up getting another payment sent from the insurance when they reprocessed it is now January of 2019 and this dentist still has not given delta dental their money back. My grandmother and mother have contacted her office and physically gone their multiple times to get her to pay them back and she won't. Based in the reviews I have seen from her she is a AAA quality malpractice dental person not even a doctor she should loose her degree. To steal from elderly people or anyone at all. I seriously hope she not only looses her license to practice, but I hope with the help of my review that her business closes and she looses it all, because that is what a human being like her deserves. read more

I do agree with other yelpers that the staff here are very friendly, and they have flexible appointment hours. However, I must caution people to keep some things in mind when going here. I saw Dr. Silva after being out of college for two years, during which time I didn't see my regular dentist though I did maintain good oral hygiene (I did not have dental insurance coverage until recently). A filling I had received in childhood had fallen out, and I was looking to get it replaced Dr. Silva and her staff took extensive xrays and photos of my teeth. As soon as she looked into my mouth, before seeing xrays, Dr. Silva told me I had multiple cavities that needed filling. When reviewing my xrays, she told me I needed a root canal, and a crown after that. A ROOT CANAL?! and TEN CAVITIES? I nearly cried as she told me that I'd need to go to the endodontist she recommended and have the $3000 treatment done, then come back to her for the crown and cavity fillings. I like to think I am an educated consumer-so before scheduling the root canal with the endodontist she recommended, I sought a second opinion from a Harvard-affiliated dentist. What do you know, he found nary a cavity. And as for the root canal, he admitted that something needed to be done. But here is where he excelled and Dr. Silva failed- his diagnostics were more comprehensive (he tested my tooth for sensitivity to cold, which would let him know if the nerve was alive and viable) and he gave me an explanation of all of my options going forward. Turns out, the root canal was not only the more expensive option, but the more invasive and painful. The doctor advised me that, since my tooth's nerve was still viable, he would do a procedure that consisted of basically cleaning out the space in my tooth, use a dental sealant to ensure the nerve stays encapsulated in the tooth, and then use a filler to refill the space the old cavity left when it fell out. Dr. Silva misled me about the state of my teeth and was not honest about my options. That alone is enough to merit a bad review-but, I also received a pre-treatment estimate from Dr. Silva's office for the ten fillings she claimed I needed. Perhaps her practice operates under the assumption that patients don't understand medical billing and will accept whatever you bill them carte blanche- but I am not that type of patient. If you're familiar with insurance you'll know that there is what's called an "allowable amount" that a dentist can charge you. This is set by the insurance company, and the dentist cannot make you pay more than that. Whatever that allowable amount is, you are responsible for whatever your copay or deductible or co-insurance is. In my case, I pay 25% coinsurance. For example, if Dr. Silva submits that she charges $450 for a procedure, and the dental insurance company only allows that she charge $300, she should be charging $300 and I would be responsible for 25% of that amount ($75). Legally, Dr. Silva can charge whatever she wants- but my dental insurance's policy explicitly states that, pursuant to their contracts with their in-network providers, said providers are DISALLOWED from charging patients the remainder of their submitted charge (what is left after the patient pays their coinsurance on the allowable amount). In the example above, it would be DISALLOWED for Dr. Silva to charge me the extra $100 dollars (in addition to my $75 coinsurance) that she asked for from the insurance company but did not get approval for. (EDIT: Though I originally wrote this bit before speaking to my insurance company, I called them to verify and it is indeed true that she cannot charge me in this manner.) And yet, this is exactly what she did. Dr. Silva charged me for amounts over my portion of the allowable cost for EVERY SINGLE ITEM on the pre-estimate she sent me. This is legal, but it can most certainly get her kicked out of the insurer's provider network. What's more, it's shady, dishonest, and fraudulent. Dr. Silva is nice, and might be good for someone who is afraid of dentists (I am not), but she is not an honest dentist. She also is licensed to administer botox injections, if you think that's what you want your dentist to offer you on the side. None of the other reviewers here seem to have needed any substantial dental work, so perhaps that's why no one has had anything bad to say yet. Apologies for the obvious snarkiness-but I think consumers should know about this! (In the interest of keeping medical providers/insurance companies honest and transparent, I will tell you that Dr. Silva charges $190 for a composite filling on 1 surface of a single tooth; $290 for a composite filling on 3 surfaces of a single tooth; and $350 for a composite filling on 4 or more surfaces of a single tooth.) read more

Cannot say enough good things about my experience at Alegria Dental group. I had not been to the Dentist in over 2 years, and was pretty worried about the outcome. After finding multiple cavities in my back molars, Dr. Silva decided the best course of action was to thoroughly clean my teeth and schedule appointments to fill my cavities when I wanted to do it, which is important. She suggested spacing it out a bit, but I wanted to do one side one week and the other side another week, and she agreed to it. I don't think anyone else would want to put themselves through that, but they are very accommodating to whatever you wish. They were also very informative about how my dental insurance worked and guided me to either fill my cavities this year or next. This saved me an extra $50 charge from the insurance company. Anyone looking for a new dentist in the Cambridge/Somerville area should definitely go to Alegria!!! read more

Honestly, one of that last things I ever want to do is go to the dentist. I panic and have a hard time trusting the capabilities of clinicians. So I went on a hunt, networking through people I knew until my friend Krista highly recommended Dr Silva. She said she was one of the most gentle and patient dentists she had ever seen. So I gave it a shot... and I really couldn't have been more impressed. The scheduling coordinator Jessica was quick to respond to me and set me up with an initial appointment in a very professional manner. When I arrived she greeted me kindly and thoroughly explained everything I needed to fill out. It was refreshing to be cared for in such a detail oriented manner. It really helped my anxiety. The dental assistant Max was absolutely amazing. He is also extremely attentive to detail, making adjustments to keep you comfortable, and made me much less panicked by explaining everything before it happened. Dr Silva was caring and patient and extremely thorough in her examination. I fully understood what the 'situation' of my mouth is and what work was priority. She checks-in to make sure you are comfortable and clearly has your best interests at heart. My appointment and interaction with Dr Silva were extremely positive, I highly recommend her as a dentist. I was nervous to visit the dentist as I hadn't been in a long time and knowing that I was facing a significant amount of work to be done. From entering the door, the staff was friendly and interactive explaining everything as we went along and making me feel comfortable. The hygienist first took about 20 x-rays (seriously) of my mouth from every angle possible and then took pictures of my teeth; the entire system is digital and the images pop up on a monitor in front of you. At first I thought this was a bit ridiculous, but I quickly found it useful as Dr Silva reviewed each tooth with me and described what the treatment plan should be. As I have a lot of work to be done and neither the money nor time to do it all at once, Dr Silva rationally developed a treatment plan that ranked the importance and order of what we will do, and made sure that I understood and was comfortable with the plan.
