I was given the number for Alex Appliances through my warranty with Frigidaire. I called to schedule the repairs and a groggy sounding man answered the phone and told told me he doesn't accept the warranty repair order numbers that Frigidaire gave me and that they would have to send him a work order. So I asked if I called and had Frigidaire send them if we could schedule an appointment (I need to do some laundry...soon) and he replied that basically he doesn't have a repair person in vista (carlsbad is 5 minutes away) so he wasn't going to schedule an appt. I hate giving out one star, but I have no choice in this matter. The "technician" that came out said our refrigerator had a broken seal. He never even looked at the compressor or anything else. I'm not a repairman, but with our refrigerator "beeping" and the fan intermittently going on and off, I knew that couldn't be right. I shelled out $35 for this bad diagnosis (the estimate to fix the gasket was a ridiculous $350), and then looked online for a repair service that might actually know what it's doing. I called Coastal Appliances and Bob came out. It didn't take Bob long to narrow down what might be the problem. He hoped it was just the fan (which wasn't running), but said it was likely the control module needed swapping out. He pointed out what I needed to monitor, and then asked me to get back to him with what I observed. As it turned out, it was a bad control module. Paying $35 for a terrible diagnosis was bad enough. I'm just glad I knew not to go through with work that would have yielded nothing (Bob even looked at the gasket and said the seal was "fine"). Unless they get more qualified technicians, I would avoid this business. read more

I called him 2 more times and he was very patient and helpful. When the trouble shooting didn't work he came by in the late evening. We have had an ongoing problem with the ice maker in our freezer. After having had a previous company come out, paid the service call, all the tech did was remove the ice maker and run it under hot water and called it fixed. Luckily, we found Alex Appliances, and Alex just finished our service call. He checked out the entire system, determined there were some defective parts and replaced the ice maker. I spent some time talking to him and as every other review stated - He knows what he is doing, he's honest, and fixed the problem. He is also a real gentleman to talk to and will let you know what the problem is and what it is going to take to fix i at a very fair price. Need an appliance service you can trust ? I actually found the company. After receiving a $2000 estimate from the SubZero manufacturer's service listing, I decided to get a second opinion. My 7 month old Frigidaire dishwasher would not drain. Since it was still under warranty, My AHS (American Home Shield) would not touch it, eventhough they came out just to see what the problem was, they charged me $75 just for the visit. What a rip off. Oh my gosh, Alex just totally saved my weekend. My clothes washer broke just as out-of-town guests arrived on Friday night. Between my guests, my roommate, and myself who was out of clean cycling clothing with a big ride coming up, I was so stressed out. A neighbor recommended Alex. When I called we discussed the issue over the phone and I could tell he was trying to see if he could coach me over the phone to fix it myself, which would have been free. Alas I could not remove the access panel. Not to worry! Alex came over just a few hours later and boy was I impressed. He is soft-spoken, highly knowledgeable and meticulous. I marveled at how clean and organized the contents of his tool box are. I sat with him as he showed me how to remove the access panel and check the filter for clogs. We were both relieved the pump did not need replaced as the issue was a huge chunk of crap in the filter. After getting the gunk out of the filter, Alex tested the washer and it worked perfect! Before replacing the access panel Alex asked if I would prefer instead to leave it off thus allowing me permanent access. Alex said I could then periodically check the filter myself every few months as good maintenance practice, and perhaps save myself a little $ in the future by teaching me to prevent/treat this problem myself if it recurs. I thought this was amazing and shows Alex is not interested in just taking peoples money. I read a few of the negative comments here about pricing and just couldn't believe it: You're not just paying for Alex's clock-time on the service call... you are paying for his cumulative expert knowledge and experience.
